After seeing his interview, it doesn't surprise me that the US Army was so hell bent on pushing something like the SAW. Luckily I left the Army before they transitioned over to it. I was surprised to find out that the USMC was responsible for the changes for the A2. Such an interesting series of interviews and I'm glad that they took place. He was able to explain his side of the early failure of the AR 15 in Vietnam.

Quite an interesting guy. Real down to earth and practical and intelligent. His point on making the weapon idiot proof so it can't be put together wrong is important. Ironically one of the Commandoes who trained to kill Reinhardt Heydrich was using a British Sten Gun that was hidden disassembled in his coat. On the street waiting he reassembled the gun but was so nervous he put part of it backwards. When the car came around the curve he jumped out and tried to fire. Nothing happened. Luckily his buddy remembered to throw their grenade. And that shooter was highly trained and had practiced a lot.

Strange they did not have Mp40s instead with them since it was one of the best of them all and many of there .

On the F-104 Starfighter they had to lower the cyclic rate because at supersonic speeds the gas pressure was blowing the hatch off, the air pressure was pushing the gasses back into the compartment and finally another round fired would boom it off. It was a GE Electronic Gatling gun/cannon, like the A-10 Warthog but a single port under the cockpit at the side of the plane.

Having been intimately familiar with the 249, I am really amazed by the Stoner design mid way in this video. To me it seems simpler, easier to operate, and probably would've been far better.

Lockhead Skunk Works had the designers working beside the shop floor. Engineers could work directly with the builders. Likely, very different now with so many computers and highly automated tools. And things like 3D printing. They also tried to use existing parts from other aircraft. Aircraft design and manufacturing is going through a new revolutionary stage. Much of the testing done on computers using over 100 years of research data. And 3D printing allowing for very complex shapes that could not be made any other way. This is very useful in very complex rocket motors. Knight Armament has further developed Stoners light machine gun. It is likely the best LMG for shooting in the world. But, sadly, with no major Buyers. Knights also helped with brin guy big the long lost AR-10 back into production. There are now dozens of AR-10 type guns on the market. Including exact copies for people interested in jistoric arms. The US Army has thousands of Knights M-110s. The Ak-47 type weapons are outdated. The modularity of the AR-15 allows it to adapt to modern needs and future needs. The M-110 and many AR-15s may soon be replaced by the Sig M-7 Spear. The M-7 has many sikilarities externally. Soldiers need little training to adapt as they have very similar controls. But inside they are very different. The M-7 was built to fire a unique and more powerful 6.8mm ammunition. Also able to fire 7.62mm NATO. Most soldiers will keep M-4s. It is mainly for squad riflemen. It comes with an advanced sighting system to greatly increase long range accuracy. The new ammo with longer range also helps defeat body armor. Sig also has a new machine gun to fire the 6.8mm ammo. The remaining M-110 rifles in the army may still serve for some time. Like the AR-15 the new M-7 Spear is controvercial. And like most new weapons it will have teething problems. And critics will continue. The AR-15 got much undue criticism. But is now extremely popular. And has over 50 years of service and many more to come.

Interesting to note and just a coincidence, I'm sure:
This was filmed on what would have been Hitler's 99th birthday in "88".

It’s interesting that his LMG was probably better than the m249 but didn’t have the mag well built into the weapon so probably was not considered.......

yup...and MR Stoner says the Stoner62/63 was wanted by the Marines, but the Army did the testing and messed it up on purpose, he said they still had hard feelings from the AR15 being adopted years prior, which the army was not happy about. he said the Army sought out junk tracer ammo on purpose, some to high pressure, and some not enough pressure, when he found out he got an ammo crate of good tracer rounds, and that night the whole crate went missing and none of the army would say anything, because they didnt want him there or hid guns for some reason, but they should have just shut up and kissed MR. Stoners feet & ass!

I had the misfortune of carrying the M249 (aka "The Brick") in the late '80s and I can tell you that the LMG which Mr Stoner is showcasing in this video is far FAR superior to that Belgian piece of crap that I was issued. What a wasted opportunity.
