"There is no audience for you to perform to". Lies. There's the table. Roleplaying is a "group sport". Also, there is most definitely someone "telling you what comes next". They're called the DM. It's not YOU ALONE. So, You're there to have fun WITH a group of people. So, while I agree with you that those videos are putting the cart before the horse, you SHOULD be mindful that roleplaying is collaborative. Your advice is very "power-playery". Actually, Improv acting does overlap a lot with roleplaying, and the "yes, and..." maxim is the best advice. Don't question the reality that is being proposed to you. Roll with it, be open to it, have fun with it and make fun for everyone else.

I feel like you've just selectively blinded yourself to huge portions of the book to make the cases you do in this review. 2:20 - Consider the entire portion which culminates with the line here: "All of that is gone now." Almost everything listed before that is still present - it's just not present in the 90s punk form it was before. - Anti-authoritarianism: At present, the Anarch movement is more fleshed out than ever and is truly a force to be reckoned with. The story has progressed, and the younger generation is putting into praxis the anti-authoritarianism of the prior editions on a huge scale - London and Berlin have had their ivory towers toppled and are now anarch havens which might make fun settings. Most major cities have a growing anarch unrest which is perfect for this sort of play if you want to forment unrest and fight The Man. - The Camarilla's control: Still there, just in the background, now. No longer is the CEO a Ventrue, the man behind him - whispering in his ear - is. - The fight not to lose your humanity: Still there, and with (in my opinion) better rules. - The end of the world: It's Gehenna right now... probably. If your only complaint is the change in aesthetic, then it's a weak one, none of the rules are locked to an aesthetic and you can adjust as you like for your game. It's not "All gone," it's "All changed," and if you don't like it for that, fair, but this is way overblown. (I'm ignoring the entire out-of-touch spiel about generations being this or that, or having this value or that value as that's an entirely different can of worms, but I'm betting this is a response to that single page at the start of the book stating that prior editions had some outdated elements) 7:00 (Hey, look! The review has started - halfway through the video) - The point that the tone is constantly apologetic doesn't even make sense. There's one opening page where it addresses that there were problems with the previous editions that are dated, now. Maybe there's a throwaway line or two somewhere else which I missed, but it's far from as constant as you seem to imply. 8:18 - The clans are not presented as monolithic in any way. It's mentioned multiple times that there are Antitribu for every clan. If there are Camarilla Ventrue, there are Anarch and Sabbat Ventrue, too. Saying "All of the (clan) are in (faction)" is directly contradicted by the source itself. The fact that you then state that individual members being split among the factions is a factor - while not realising it never mentions what proportion other than implying that the Antitribu are "not the majority" is another strange reading. It never says that, I read the same book and came away with the impression that the bulk of the clan's power players have thrown their lot in with certain factions, but that's no different to prior editions where the Ventrue were by-en-large Camarilla, for example, and every clan had the faction it's leadership was behind. Hell, even the disciplines are not set in stone with the way the new feeding mechanics work, what do you mean the individualism is gone? Did you even read "You are what you eat?" (Later in the video it seems you did, but still somehow hold this point when it's more flexible than ever. 10:15 - I don't think it's the authors who have a lack of faith in their audience here. It's a TTRPG, why could you not adjust things to your way of wanting to do things? I know I have. I didn't like the Beckoning because I enjoy the otherworldly nature of the Elders - so guess what, it's gone. I liked some of the older disciplines (as you clearly do) so guess what? They've been adapted back, easily. I have never seen as creatively bankrupt a group of people as those who complain about the lore changes in V5 and praise some, or in a lot of cases, many of the mechanical changes. Just look at your old sourcebooks - nobody took them. I know mine still exist and are well thumbed. This simply offers a view at how the metaplot might have advanced in the two decades plus since the last we left the system. The theme is not the purview of the sourcebook to decide - it can give some examples, and this one does - but it's on the storyteller and players to collaborate on a theme. Nothing is stopping you from running an older edition-themed game with these rules, it never says you can't - in fact it doesn't even push a specific theme it wants you to go for. 10:51 - You are reading far too much into those passages. They give plenty of options for mechanics and then say that if they don't suit your group, leave them out... that's it. I don't get how you find this to be "regretful" or "apologetic," when it's just offering options and solutions. There's no tone of "Oh, we're sorry we're offering combat mechanics," but there is one of, "Hey, if you want combat, here are options, if you don't, here are some alternate rules to make it quick so you can get back to the parts of the story you do like." This just feels like a rant loosely connected to a sourcebook you barely engaged with, and - from the opening pages which you disagreed with - never planned to run in the first place. It feels like you phased into incoherence upon seeing the opening page mentioning the problematic elements of prior editions, came back around for the hunger chapters, and then totally skimmed the rest. There are absolutely things to criticize about V5 and this sourcebook in particular. I too felt the layout was fairly bad. It starts on sections which require later sections of the book to understand, as you touched on, and I think there should have been a longer introduction to the setting in the beginning, as you do, too. I also dislike that it was clearly written with the idea of having a lot of the in-world information fleshed out in subsequent book, and even - quite egregiously - some of the clans. I'm certain there are other elements that could have been way better, I came here to find reviews to help solidify how I felt about the book, however, all your valid criticisms are lost in the mud of the weird rants and just plain incorrect sections of the review. It's a flawed product, but not the flawed product you make it out to be.

Since the channel believes it has a strong enough point to change that initial negative disposition. I am both surprised and glad to notice the channel is right about that. It is, indeed, a great video. Congratulations. Oh, but you can escape the Camarilla mafia! Is actually not that hard. Sabbat is always looking for new blood to recruit, mind you. They have a sweet "witness program" waiting for you. If you play your cards right! Less Sopranos more Vikings, 300 of Sparta, etc. Escape the mafia by joining the army.

the phrasing of learning to "be happy" i think is the actual harmful part about that pop culture idea of masculinity, It like the entitled brat. It's why people reject the man who comes home from work to watch some TV, instead of going to help the rest of his family keep the home running, he complains when they ask him to help them when they are also clearly tired and there is work that still needs to be done. He seems to be very much confused about his own ideas and if you explained it to them they would see how nonsensical his statement was.

I accidentally did this in my Stars Without Number campaign. My last session, after 2.5 years, ended yesterday. Most of the last half of the games were focused on a kidnapping plot on a massive space station. The players then spent that time dealing with the plot. It felt a lot like a soap opera withcall of the interconnected relationships. There were a few other hooks they bit on over time but their main focus was on saving the kidnapped people and taking apart the people involved over time. The plot was complicated with many people involved so it was fun to watch them puruse all of the loose ends. The hardest game session to run is an epilogue at the end of a campaign. Bringing things to a satisfying conclusion in a sandbox is not easy.

I understand that that can be tough to open up to because it can be awkward at first or with the wrong group and a lot of it comes with experience.
