    The irony about the new edition throwing shade towards the elders of the Camarilla is that the Second inquisition pretty much vindicates every suspicion they have towards modern technology.

      it's really funny too seeing so many people who do streams and actual plays and stuff completely disregarding the ban on cell phones. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills bc I am definitely one of those millennials who scoffed at the old timeyness of elders during the 90s but in a post Snowden world we all implicitly know are cell phones passively literally listen to us for advertising

      Except if you inquire further it is heavily implied that it was *Elder* sloppiness in the use of SchreckNet and their attempted manipulation of the intelligence community to their own ends that lead to the SI.

    I do like the idea of the Second Inquisition. It demonstrates that humanity will curb stomp kindred if the Masquerade is revealed. The power of the Blood is nothing in the face of faith and multiple full-auto weapons.
    However, I don’t like the other modern plot advancement, the Gehenna War. It was written at a time of extreme conflict in the Middle East which has changed in the present day. If the lore changed so that the Gehenna War was happening wherever mortal conflicts occur, then we get the Gehenna War to stay relevant.

    • @blacklodgegames
      @blacklodgegames  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      The Ghenna War and the Beckoning are good ideas poorly executed.

    • @TheControlBlue
      @TheControlBlue 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      It's not bad for the setting to get confined to a time, and that period deserves a decade or two of people looking into it more.
      That and I'd rather we have another generation, that's less pozzed, to look at the current era, the people we have now are too clouded by the culture war.

    • @Daredhnu
      @Daredhnu 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the lore of the game can deviate from the real history, we don't need contemporary wars in the middle east for them to exist in the world of darkness

    • @cdubsb3831
      @cdubsb3831 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, been playing through Evil West recently and thinking about how a trained hunter can absolutely body the average vampire. The Masquarade exists for a reason.

    • @legionhut2443
      @legionhut2443 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      The biggest problem with so many of these new metaplot elements is WW (or whoever they have hired to write for them these nights) appears to have put little thought into how they work together, and often don't have the conviction to follow through with their ideas. Case in point; the Beckoning draws away all Elders leaving the thrones of the Tower empty, except they don't commit to that idea at all and almost all of their settings remain populated with all the same Elders and in some cases Methuselahs as if nothing has happened. Chicago being perhaps the best example. A possibly interesting idea totally undercut by the inability to stand by the decision.
      Without the Beckoning having any teeth to it, the Gehenna War becomes a narrative hand-wave to avoid introducing the Sabbat. And drawing every single Elder to one geographic locale under the assumption it's the Antediluvian's influence is... poorly thought out, considering we know not all the Founders are in the same location. Seems like a bad attempt to include a Current Year-ism.
      Lastly the "new" Sect War between Anarchs and Cams didn't even get off the ground. It's an utterly stillborn idea smothered by the other monolithic elephant in the room, the SI. And the SI feels like a boring re-tread of the Technocracy, a concept I never liked in the first place. Human factions with no humanity don't juxtapose against the inhuman monsters, and the Cam already offers enough bureaucratic evil to fill a supertanker.

    My take on elders always keeping pace with humanity was always camafloug for a tiger. It is not that ancient vampires actually care about the latest Italian fashion so much as they stick out like a sore thumb if they wear that zoot suit they were fond of when alive. This does not really reflect change so much as keeping the mascarade, as they have always done. The tone of the book always felt like a used car salesman trying to train another by selling them a lemon; the pages drip with irony.
    I did not read the version with the removed text; not sure how that would land.
    I never thought the world of darkness needed an update for technology; that is just a gimic to sell more books. In the 90's you could have close circuit cameras in open areas, just like now. The default assumption is you are going to get a victim alone to feed, not do so when you are in front of a bank or something. Cameras and wireless communication did not solve all murders, after all. Heck, not appearing on camera is a power you could take. The original game wrote itself into a corner that no player actually engaged in; no one cared about the meta plot of a coming apocalypse and the books that dealt with it were the worst selling books because vampire players were more concerned with fighting for king of the hill in Boston than some global battle of shadow organizations across the planet.

  • @whangbar
    @whangbar 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

    I always felt like WoD Vampires were a little too "smoking a cig behind the hs bleachers" faux-edgy. For me, it comes down to that Italian-suit tastemaker vibe as a shallow cover for what is essentially alienness. The Embrace alienates you, literally. And then you have a very narrow circle of individuals to whom you can relate . . .

    Another great video. What I hate about V5 is that in all the shit that it's pilled over it, there's some sweet little gems you can pull out.
    Like the Second Inquisition, the discovery of the Shreknet and how the Nosferatu are seen, the destruction of the whole organization of that Vampire Wizard clan (I can't remember their names, but fuck them), and how the Gangrels finally went independent and out of the Camarilla leash. And all that to be crushed again with things like the erasure of the Clan Disciplines and what they did to the Sabbath. At the end of the day, all of V5 is like a Pirate telling you that stealing is wrong: Incredibly stupid and asking yourself "then why the hell are you a Pirate on the first place?"
    Pd: I really can't wait for your other reviews on the next supplements and your take on the whole Sabbath stuff, either narratively or in terms of gameplay.

  • @Ravager4561

    I always found the inclusion of the Banu Haquim in the Camarilla to be a bit off and felt like progressive theme smuggled in.
    These Camarilla elders who are from a time when either their religious identity put them at odds with the islamic one, or who comes from an imperialist or strong national past or simply a strong european identity apparently have no qualms about the Banu's admission or place as equals within the sect, espeically in the midst of their newfound religiosity.
    "We beseech the Camarilla for sanctuary, and
    for the most part they grant it. We are grateful to
    them for their respect. In this they are much better
    than the increasingly Islamophobic kine of the West.
    We pray they will not turn back to the intolerance we
    have come to expect from European and American"
    To me it seems they wanted to included an islamic faith/clan into the Camarilla without playing out the natural consequences/drama. Which is a shame because it is quite an interesting point of contention/ source of conflict that could be used in the game.

    • @blacklodgegames
      @blacklodgegames  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    • @legionhut2443
      @legionhut2443 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Another way to look at the Assamites joining the Tower being at odds with the lore, the Tremere and Assamites have... history... that should all but prevent them occupying the same faction. And yet, the Banu are let in without any strings attached.

    • @blacklodgegames
      @blacklodgegames  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@legionhut2443 and the Tremere have been shattered so it is less of a problem. The insinuation that the Banu were behind the setite assassinations was also really good

    • @legionhut2443
      @legionhut2443 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@blacklodgegames The Pyramid's unity is broken, but I just see it as a case of the Tower not being big enough for these two rivals. Then again, they make the Lasombra a Camarilla Clan so what do I know. The Tower has a long history of leaving strung-out Clans out to die, too. The Setites possibly joining the Tower seems like a bizarre move given the motivations of the Setites, ie. wake their God and help him destroy the world. But if there's one Clan the Banu hate more than the Tremere, I suppose it'd be the Serpents.

    Yep, there are some genuinely interesting concepts that were introduced in V5 that shake up the setting in some intriguing ways. But most of the time, V5 fails to truly capitalize on these new concepts either by not exploring them enough or introducing them and then completely ignoring it to focus on other things that add nothing to the setting imo. V5 is mixed bag for me and I do agree with you that there are some good ideas introduced in this edition and even though I prefer V20, I have taken some of the V5 lore that I find interesting and added it into my V20 setting and even homebrewed a lot V5 mechanics, like the hunger system into V20 as well.
    Anyway really looking forward to more of your your reviews on this editions, cause these are easily the best reviews on V5 on youtube. Keep up the good work man.

    For such a long time, I've worried about V5, I got into it via V20 and the groups I surrounded myself with were always weary of it.
    I worried about the compromises
    The twists in the setting that didn't sit right with me.
    The Fandom becoming a bit creepy, if not hypocritically elitist with new players if they didn't say the right things or make the "correct" kinds of vampires that had modern sensibilities.
    But you cut the BS and tell me what existence is for vampires under the cam is in this new century.
    The losses, the power struggles, the status Quo from the last 500 years curling in and ditching the "normal starting sect" association.
    I don't know if you care much, but as you spoke, I saw your hands shake a bit as you got more intense, and I could feel that passion for the setting.
    It's gotten me wanting to pick it all back up, read my book of Nod and delve right in.
    Now I just need to find/make a table of normal folks to play it with!

    This series on V5 is great, and one of the reasons is that it keeps an eye on past editions. I'm gen-x and, as you said about the time a vampire is embraced, my baseline normality is the 90s. Seeing how defanged the modern iteration is is not as odd to me as how normal being so tame and apologetic is to kids these days.
    Maybe the fear of an unforgiving second inquisition works because it represents the fear of being doxxed after an accidental wrong think.
    I hope you guys one day spare some time for the NWoD iteration.

    As always, really enjoyed the video! While I'll keep playing 2nd edition I like some of the ideas for the 2010s and 20s in 5th edition on at least an abstract level. The Camarilla becoming harsher and making vampires who want to be part of it prove themselves is a cool one.
    I think the Beckoning would be more interesting if it was hit or miss, maybe a plurality of elders being summoned to warzones around the world instead of almost all of them (unless I've misunderstood it up to this point). I'm also going to have the term 'Beckoning' be mainly used by Millennials who got turned into vampires in the 2010s-20s but have older vampires have a different word or phrase for it.

    One of the main issues with V5 is that the base book practically NEEDS you to read all the additional material other than the core book, which doesn't do a good job painting the picture of the entire setting, factions, conflicts etc.
    In a way it feels like these supplements are either "backtracking" on what the core book was doing or that they intended to cut content to sell it later (like placing the different clans and alternative rules etc in separate books)

      Yes, the core book assumes prior knowledge of Vampire, it is quite irritating.

    My players prefer to stick with V20, but I am itching to run V5.

    That! That's the heart of this video! That's the crucial point.
    Millenials, in all their medias, present all the evils they see, and their own evil, as something romanticized, and that's merely because they have been sheltered from seeing what that evil really does all their lives.
    Sometimes, the freedom fighter with a kalach is just a killer, nothing else.

    Within WoD I was always far more interested in and attached to playing Mage the Ascension and Wraith the Oblivion. I did story tell a LOT of Vampire because my gaming group loved it, so I took on being a storyteller a lot of the time since I didn't care about playing it as much as everyone else. I used real world events all the time, back in the late 90's and early 00's. Sadly, what White Wolf failed to understand is the moment you apologize to an outrage mob, you are lost because NOTHING will ever be enough for said mob no matter what side of the outrage they are on.

    After reading the basic book with safety tools, doversity statements, i can't handle reading the other books, because will be always in the back of my mind that this people hate me.
    It feels sad because i spent my teenage years playing vampire and i really like the game.

      The good thing is that the old editions are still readily available
