The Affair at the Victory Ball by Agatha Christie
At a glittering Victory Ball, where revelers don the masks of the Commedia dell'arte, gaiety turns to horror as Lord Cronshaw is found stabbed through the heart.
As the music fades and the champagne goes flat, another body is discovered - the beautiful Coco Courtenay, victim of a fatal overdose.
Enter Hercule Poirot, summoned to unravel a mystery where nothing is as it seems.
With each tick of the clock, the Belgian detective peels away layers of deception, exposing the dark truths hidden behind jovial facades.
In a world where Harlequin and Pierrot play deadly games, can Poirot unmask the killer before the final curtain falls?

I really enjoy your portrayal of the Belgian detective. You seem to be enjoying yourself, and that gilds this lily.
Thank you for the story and your insights, which always make even well known tales more interesting! And hugs to the dogs ❤
I love the commentaries and discussions (as well as the stories, obviously). Denouement is from the verb 'denouer' to untie, or unknot so I suppose it is the unravelling of the plot in English - coincidentally I was discussing the word yesterday with a colleague. It's a great word and it's interesting how different authors manage it. Agatha is my favourite of the golden age - I love the subtle humour and irony - little things like in The Hollow where Lucy Angkatell is pondering the appropriate items to serve for a lunch after the discovery of the murder! but the butler has already provided sandwiches and Lucy is relieved and remarks that a substantial sandwich is quite as good as lunch and there is nothing "heartless" about them! The Ngaio Marsh books are really good - you mentioned you weren't familiar with them? Thank you.
We were discussing true crime podcasts in my communications class. Do you think true crime podcasts could be a reincarnation of classic detective fiction? Real life amateurs solving and discussing real life crime?
that is an amazing insight. I was reading one of the detective stories and it was saying that even in Victorian times the detectives would get suggestions by letter from amateur sleuths so it seems that they’ve already always existed.
Thank you so much for uploading the entire book as a single video! I just found your channel, and I love your work! You have a new subscriber. Keep up the great work, and I can’t wait to see what you upload next! Also, congratulations on being so close to 20k subscribers!
Interesting Solution. From the first when starring at the Sun was mentioned, I kept wondering why No-One commented on the fact that doing so would damaged the eyes’ retina - causing the eye to be dazzled and blinded. My thought was that in the state, if the elevator-door opened onto emptiness, a person could accidentally fall to their death; strange that that possibility wasn’t even spoken-of. (Reminds Me of the Sherlock Holmes stories, in that respect - other viable possibilities being ignored.) Thank-You, I enjoy these stores very-much!!!
I love Tony Walker's narration.(And this is one of my favorite Poirot adventures). You should check out Tony's "Classic Ghost Stories Podcast".
I know you aren't comfortable reading a hard-boiled Chandler in your voice, but I would love to hear one, anyway, because you are an excellent voice actor. I was listening to one put out by either an AI or a bad reader who had no idea how to emphasize anything. I kept wishing it was you reading. Perhaps a Chandler story for your memberships? In parts would be fine. Just a suggestion.
Chandler was English of course but his characters are all American
I adore Agatha Christie; she's never boring, always enjoyable. Her stories are like picking your way through a box of chocolates.
Ty Tony! Hope yall are all well! 🙏🏼✝️❤️
Yes thanks

So sad, but gorgeous Writing.
Thanks
Welcome
Dropping 'g's' was an affectation of the Whimsey class at the time. Also the use of 'ain't.' It was a form of verbal slumming by the upper class of the Whimsey branch.
Yes; about ‘turning it around on its head’ as You put it, I’m always interested in what Authors choose to call their stories. So, even though I live in Canada, I’ve heard enough British stories and productions to be familiar with the ‘Deaths/Murders come in Threes’ superstition - and naturally wondered about the fact that Three was to be considered a Lucky-number, in this story. …The question left to be answered being “Lucky to Who?”! (So glad it was Lucky for ‘the One who got-away’!!!) 😄😂😂
Lol; I love this kind of story, what a gem this one is!!!😂😂😂😁🥳 Thank-You so much!
Love Peter Falks’ Columbo, I hadn’t realized the series was based on books - though that makes sense. Thank-You for this, and all the fascinating info and thoughts!
Very good! (Yep, it IS the same story; see below!) I love how - in the books - Flambeaux DOES Reform, and that (apparently) he and Father Brown become Good-Friends; they even solve cases Together!
How I pity the pretty American widows with their vaguely Brooklyn accents.😀
10-mins into this story; I’ve never read it before, but I think that one of the Father Brown tv show episodes (latest version) was based upon it. …In the show, the 2-Men were Circus Folk and there were a few other differences - but basically the same tale; little wonder, I suppose, as it’s written by G.K. Chesterton. 😉
Excellent work with compelling narration, thankyou.
When you yelled at the dogs, it was so startling that I laughed out loud. I mean, you’re the guy with the voice who puts people to sleep, not the guy who wakes people up! It was so funny.
It reminded of the (Looney Toon?) cartoons where someone would yell, "Wake up!" 😂
Thank you Tony. ❤. Hope that you're well and happy. Excellent work as usual. Love your chats as always. 🕵️
Actually looking forward to bedtime now! Thank you so much.🙏🙏🙏
Thank you, Tony. What a treat
Love your voice 😉
Awesome! Thank you.
😊
Now, my weekend is complete! Thank you, Mr. Walker 💐
Good❤
Oh dear , that voice is terrible !
More ftom this author please
Thanks much. You’re easy in the ears. Excellent! Edit: I very much enjoy your commentary. It nice having another opinion besides ones own.
Lovely intro
I absolutely love radio shows!!! I discovered them a few years ago and so wowed by the acting ability. Sometimes, the old commercials are included which are amusing.
You made me 😅 at the end of "see ya...." You have a very good voice for narratuon.
47:00 His best ever, miniature portrait comes from "The High Window." The italianate undertaker in the shady area of town, has stepped outside his business to smoke a cigarette from, "...a black, enamel and platinum cigarette case." This tells you all you need to know about him. He is confident, wealthy, discreet and slightly sinister. It turns out that he is the local mob captain.
This was adapted for television in the late '90s. It was directed by, and featured, Tom Hanks.
I've never heard of Dover before, but I'm glad I have
Thanks!
Thank you TH-cam for recommending this channel! I have been sick in bed with Covid-like symptoms and was looking for something to pass the time. I loved everything about this. The narration was superb and the chitchat at the end was very informative. I couldn't hit the subscribe button fast enough.
Always loved Paul Temple and Steve series keep them coming 👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️
This popped up on my feed and it is a wonderful surprise! As a big Rumpole and Mortimer fan, I enjoyed much hearing a new-to-me Rumpole story. As if that were not enough, the channel author (Tony?) then provides wonderful commentary about the author and character. Commentary included a marvelous analysis of select characteristics of Rumpole from a POV of current culture and trends. That’s rare indeed as Rumpole is largely forgotten. Thank you for sharing this!
Leo McKern played Rumpole in British productions and helped make me love John Mortimer. His stories and characters always left me with a smile. Especially stories with the judge called The Bull. Rumpole delighted in ruffling the judge's feathers.
Flippin' heck, that was fun!
Probably the only one of Marlowe's cases in which he made a profit.
I always feel excited when stumbling-on a (good) series of Detective/Mystery-stories formerly unknown to me; Thanks so much for Your enjoyable Reading and Comments!
Glad you enjoy it!
Love Your commentary AND readings; Thank-You for sharing all You do!
Thanks for listening!
Maybe it is that the story starts with a murder and the author being who he is famous for , the reader expects a solved murder and thats why the disappointment?
Thanks Tony! I’ve been looking forward to your reading of this masterpiece. It’ll carry me through a few days. No doubt I’ll love it, just as I’ve loved so many of your other readings. Cheers!
hope you enjoy it as much as I did
