My husband became an academic AFTER having had a successful private sector career - he worked for both British and Australian universities- this play is not unrealistic -he retired this year - I attended a number of soirées where the attendees were predominantly male academics accompanied by suitable wives - as a liberated, successful in my own right individual I did not quite fit in …more than once I clashed horns with a misogynistic leather elbow patched pompous git who had not quite joined the 20th century let alone the 21st! 😂😂😂
Loved the story (and your reading of it). I have trouble understanding when people get upset about there having been different times, mores, and values. The lack of basic understanding, often (I have found) accompanies a lack of empathy for other human beings even while they spout ingroup slogans, or virtue signal. Those that 'doth protest too much' should not be trusted, lol. I love these dark comedies, and your use of voices is wonderful. Thank you, from Manitoba, Canada
Hello, Tony. I loved listening to you narrate this story! The different accents and intonations really add to the enjoyment...I felt that I was at the theater! The light-hearted tone was just perfect. Not that death ever IS light-hearted, but I know you understand. I'm delighted with all you do, but this sort of "oh, so intellectual banter" and Noel Cowardish story seems to suit my mood these days. Can't seem to process anything too heavy. Thanks for being there. Sending you sincere hopes and wishes that you, Sheila, the pups and your entire family are enjoying a safe, healthy and gloriously happy holiday season.😊
thank you . we are shivering under the storm at the moment. The dogs are by the fire and climbing to go out, but they won’t be once they see the weather.
I LOVE when you read humorous stories---and all the character voices you do, LOL!!! I'm going to have to hear this one again. I love authors who poke fun at all the isms and stodginess.
I loved this story and did cackle out loud twice despite being a labor-progressive new age spiritual weirdo myself. Satire is always funny to a person who can laugh at themselves.
Thank you Tony!! Beaufifully read, snd i really enjoyed your post- read thoughts!! I think that Robert Barnard was having fun, at the Old Boys Network's expense, their terrible snobbery, bigotry and finally the protagonists fear of losing his income!! ( I had to giggle too, at "After she had lost her religion/faith"!! Sorry, offended culture,,but Lol!!)
If you wish to experience real bigotry try the ordinary working class folks you see around you every day .? This clicheed drivel about snobbery / racism being a middle-class thing ( ie. university dons etc ) is a lazy distortion of the Truth. Apart from which : its painfully unfunny.! A feeble attempt at an Evelyn Waugh pastiche.
@@2msvalkyrie529 Personally I have actually experienced what is called "Inverted Snobbery" myself, due to my "Posh-Accent"!! Happy you dug up this Barnard. I really enjoyed reading him back in the day and haven’t seen him since. I just searched his name on TH-cam but this short story was all that turned up. I do hope you find some more. I don’t think this story is sexist or racist; he is satirizing the racists and sexists. At the time, in the US, there were quotas on everybody but white men.
Tony, I swear if you don' t use the phrase "Lovecraft on acid" at some point in the future in your writing I'm going to be so disappointed! Thanks again for helping me to find great detective stories (and authors)!
Didn't know of your channel, and i am a very big crime fiction/ golden age mystery/ hard boiled detective/amateur sleuth fan so I am super excited to be a new subscriber.
Enjoyed this one, Tony! Reminds me a bit of Saki. I wish Barnard wrote it as a full length novel, with Whiteley's 'mischief' occasioning the arrival of the young woman as a fellow. As long as he kept it light, the story of these geezers coping with a murder and a vibrant, new colleague could be very entertaining. 🖤
Hey Tony - looks like TH-cam doing its job. Didn’t know you were over here as well. Looking forward to more stories. I think the term you might use for polari is argot (which is a thieves slang). Learnt the word from will self surprisingly !
🙏🏼 Good job! You add a new dimension to these works. Your channel is a v recent find, a real pleasure. I'd run out of sources. Palari is well documented. Many of the words are in daily usage. I hope you have a go at writing one day my friend. ❤
Me! Yes please! Why is a prostitute (“oldest known profession”) in a plastic mack unappreciated? This one seems more of an “opportunity to offended”, but then I am not offended by topless, black womben wearing a leopard print bikini bottom on a beach in France. Loved it. Ta’ & Cheers! 🪭
For many ( especially after outcome of recent US elections) .. the situation is very much a " Hobson's Choice" ~ how to choose between ... female or Black ? When combined ... ?? ! So enjoyable to hear an humurous approach to a modern dilemma.
This one is too mean-spirited for me. Even Dashiel Hammet and Raymond Chandler didn't have such a jaundiced view of people. Great narration, as always.
Loved it. I work at one of the two places that are mentioned in this story, either the main setting or the place where the lady was in the footlights. I won’t say which in order not to incriminate/identify myself. I’m not saying things are perfect now. But I will say they are not like this anymore and I’ve never had any problems. But then I would say that, because , as evidenced by my being able to post, I wasn’t the one who drank the port……
Lovecroft on acid 😂 Yeah, reading at university would put my head in a spin. A lot of words and not too sure how much they really mean all put together
I lfind the story hilarious but I can't find it anywhere - is this really the right title or author? Also no, I don't think 'duckies' is a slur, as the member of the rainbow mafia, but I think most people wouldn't know what it means these days nor have I ever heard it. Coded language fell out of vogue with the internet.

This was so funny. And Tony, your performance was top notch as usual.
Loved the story (and your reading of it).

Thanks for the introduction to a new author
Thanks for all you are doing dude, I look forward to your uploads and I hope that your channel goes from strength to strength.
I LOVE when you read humorous stories---and all the character voices you do, LOL!!! I'm going to have to hear this one again. I love authors who poke fun at all the isms and stodginess.
Yes, that's it. That's my opinion. Thank you for stating it here!
Loved this story, well written and very well read
I loved this story and did cackle out loud twice despite being a labor-progressive new age spiritual weirdo myself. Satire is always funny to a person who can laugh at themselves.
The very dry "how unfortunate" reaction to a man kicking the bucket in front of him is what gave me a chuckle.
Quite so, quite so😉
Perfect Tony! Thank you so much ❤❤❤
Light mystery, nice voice, warm covers, soft bed-i'm set! Thx❤
Robert Barnard is one of the GREAT mystery authors!
This is so good! I'm halfway through, but I'm going to save it for my bedtime story and listen from the beginning. ❤🇦🇺
Wonderful, thank you, Tony, love your narration.
Very witty and love your narration :)
Thank you Tony!!

More Robert Barnard short stories, please!
It was a good weekend. Now, it's a GREAT one! Thank you, Mr Walker!
Fantabulosa!
Thank you Tony.
Lovecraft on acid!🤯😂
Utterly charming. A nice change from hard boiled.🥚
Not offended, looking forward to the mentioned story, & appreciate all your work & research. Once upon a time…again…again…again! Thanks! 🎉
It's trying to offend everyone so much that it's obvious it's basically saying "oh grow up" to anyone who'd be likely to do so.
This could handle a few revisits. Very cleverly written.
Thank you, Tony, that was most enjoyable! 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
Mr Tony, I really enjoyed this story. I especially got a chuckle out of your after comments... ""Lovecraft on acid" was great!!
Nice one Tony

Exceptional!
Bravo
More of this type of thing, please?
see next week …
Very enjoyable, Tony, thanks!
Yes, yes,,,right now,,,yes, I would!! (Lol!)
Now, I'm going to be quiet and listen!!
Thank you Tony!!
Thanks Tony
Love a good, humorous story. ❤ Thanks.

I’m glad to have you here
I wouldn't have any trouble with a streetwalker in a plastic mac (in a story), but then, I'm a Yank. Now, I want to hear that one!
Me! 🪭

How fun! 🙃
I might if it's a well aged, late bottled, port of vintage, but I've got GOUT! So it would probably kill me right back.
Gout is a Victorian disease😂
This one is too mean-spirited for me. Even Dashiel Hammet and Raymond Chandler didn't have such a jaundiced view of people. Great narration, as always.
Bloody marvelous!
That thriller writer Mr. Wilke Collins... 🤭😂😂

This was great & indeed many levels of society are being made fun of here!! Pity those who don't/can't understand the humor!
"It's not illegal???"
I am hoping I don't fall asleep. When someone reads to me or I am listening to TV in bed, I fall asleep. No sleep aids needed.
Lovecroft on acid 😂
Yeah, reading at university would put my head in a spin. A lot of words and not too sure how much they really mean all put together
Its funny, Tony and its satire.
Youll be fine.
Dziękuję
:)
First time listener... disappointed at no resolution of the murder
😢
Delicious.
That was quite good. Socialism and liberalism.

I do not read for reality. We've got enough of that. Not funny
This wasn’t real though ?
