You are our great literary genius, Tony. I have never heard of Mrs. Henry Wood before and can see, despite the stereotypes and morals, she is a fine writer. Thank you for introducing us.
Brilliant story - especially for the time she lived in. She understood that people could be mentally unfit, not just “mad”, that there were reasons behind such behavior. The sequence for poor Matilda was laid out sensibly and realistically. The characters all have full personalities. She is a very good writer, the story being woven back and forth in time. So why is she not well-known? Obviously, there were more women authors in the 19th century than we are told about. I’d love to hear/read more of her work. And you are a marvelous reader! Thanks so much :) ☀️💙🌷🌱
Dear Tony, what a good heart you have! Despite your sometime crotchet and jaded feelings, wrought by bitter experience. It seems clear that your coin lands heads up every time. You are a marvel. What a mind. A magpie of talents and curiosity. Thanks for sharing your time and these stories. 🕵🤗
A wonderful read and post read ramble. I admit I am fond of these longer, slower paced stories from a slower paced age. America has been to crazed and frenzied for me lately, this was so calming. I love how she gave clues but not so heavily you could guess, so Johnny voices your thoughts a bit.
The maids playing games, bullying, taking personal possessions, mocking, etc is something that goes on at work, in institutions, universities. Bullying by colleagues and managers is considered acceptable behaviour in universities.
@@YossiloveuEven better I found from experience is to not let them get your goat, let your goat be ungetatable! If you let them bother you by blaming them then you give all your power away! Love this, Tony! Perfect solution of what to do at 3+ AM, unable to sleep. Gripping, informative, thought-provoking and at times funny, first sentence to last, Dog Nico snoring appreciatively from under the duvet. Thank you!
Amen! For some reason lately I've been waking around 3 AM and too wide awake to go back to sleep. Just today (last ight) i listened to this with the cat Mo under the duvet while I deleted emails.
Mr. Tony, excellent character separation and narration. Love your varied voices for the Welsh, kiddies and English adults. Well done!! Enjoyed the story and narration very much. Thanks for the hard work!! Don't worry, we that listen to all your own stories and the narration of other great writers, you're a literary genius and still alive!!
Great job Tony. I'm a just the stories listener atm. Yours is the only podcast I listen to, I know you prefer your listeners to listen to all but I would say please don't be offended. I just prefer the way you read, the world would be a boring place if we were all the same and since I very first heard you read Honeysuckle Cottage? or words to that effect, I've been hooked and hang on your every word and absorb them with delight... Thanks for being brave enough to start the podcast... DON'T DIE ON US JUST YET Tony😊
Ty for taking your time to upload these stories, but further thanks for your long and detailed unpacking of the tale with all the side notes and local knowledge. I have always been curious as to why Norwood was originally called this as it resides in south London. Born in camberwell, now in Bexleyheath. Thank you Sir.
Interesting discussion afterwards. Couldn't Matilda simply have flown into a rage, committing the murder and subsequent attack upon the cook? How does that rage constitute madness? I'm interested in your professional assessment here.
The biggest reason people with acute mental illness live in the mainstream in the US is that long term residential mental health care got Largely shut down, partly from altruistic reasons and partly for financial reasons. Long term care is rarely covered by insurance. So the streets it is.
Two remarks. The first is that going up to town dates back to the days of coaching. Even today on the railways there is an up and down lines. The weakness of the story was that the maidservant was the obvious suspect. The doctor's statement that the death had ocurred earlier does not come up at the inquest and then dropped from the narrative. Did Mrs Wood realise she had raised an awkward plot point and had to drop it to continue the story. Mrs Wood does not rival Agatha Christie when it comes to plotting.
So from reading other crime stories set in the UK fiction and true, it seems like back then hanging for murder was almost a given. Did the UK have an insanity plea like the US? And if it was intermittent like Matilda's was would it have held up if she had gone to trial?
A working class woman with a sexual dimension would be much safer if locked away. I mean safer for society, not for Matilda. There may have been too much character in these two maids. Just a thought.
Personally, I enjoyed the quality of in-depth writing. I wouldn’t mind hearing more of her work. Speaking from an archetypal standpoint, I would go so far as to say this writing style is more of a feminist way of storytelling: the meandering, the inclusion of more than just “central idea driven” facts. It isn’t for everyone, but you learn so much more than just a literary detective “bedding”- fact attract, uncover, in for the kill shot, & to tell the story after- which is certainly more masculine. In the Matilda “side-stepping”, never really mentioning for the point of view or “freedoms” of the well being who wasn’t sick & didn’t ask to be murdered; If we agree to have government then Libertinism doesn’t work for the well being of all. Just saying, EVEN THOUGH, i speak having been designated “without capacity” several times in my life. I don’t believe being in a civilized society means we don’t give up SOME freedoms for what should be the betterment of the community- for instance not poisoning masses of persons, animals, flora & fauna as a just means to make THINGS or that shooting up children is justified because you have “complex ptsd”, just to example what I mean. Most of my harm was self directed, however, I believe, having successfully making it through those traumatic experiences, I can say I am GRATEFUL to have been “sectioned off” from society to not be a harm to myself or others, get assistance in pushing/pulling through, to land on my feet and I BELIEVE THAT IS WHAT A MULTI-LAYERED COMMUNITY HEALTH CARING SYSTEM is there for: to help the “weakest” most “fragile”, most “volatile”, most “erratically dangerous” from harming themselves or others. I think the servant that was murdered would probably agree, one death is one too many. 💔❤️🔥❤️🩹❣️ I like the “idea” of Libertarianism but I prefer a safe communal environment for the well being of all to be above an individual’s right to justly do whatever they want for whatever reason all the time. I think protecting the innocent, naive, & weaker beings in an environment is WHY we have elected to have GOVERNING BODIES. We can EXPECT them to be account-able & democratic with regards their citizenship- or what is the point? I guess I feel there is a lot of unnecessary suffering justified behind the lack of connection to/for humanities common good. Apologies if I wandered too far off topic, but it IS a story about a community affected by a MURDERer.😢
I think you mean "feminine" way of storytelling. Feminine and feminist are not the same thing. Some would say they're virtually and practically opposite.
