For those of you who are using Apple products and have an old iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with a headphone jack or dock connector, I can warmly recommend the following: Jailbreak the old device and install an AirPlay receiver. Does the same job as the device demonstrated here, but does not need a Chinese third-party application to set up. Marginally less dodgy and the old iPhones do have quite decent DACs. AirPlay streams are in most cases lossless compressed format (using the suggested solution, always) and your old phone will show up as an output device on other Apple devices.
Excellent video and very well presented (once was an IT Trainer) but now with very small and compact £10 Audio Amplifiers found on eBay which allow loudspeaker, Bluetooth, line-in, AUS and USB connections you can do exactly the same without the faff of making a DIY one. I have an old MS Surf Pro (used mini-laptops are very cheap on Ebay now) which allows the same access to smartphone streaming music, but you have a much larger and easier to administrate the screen as I do with TH-cam, Radio Boom and Spotify.
Great suggestion! Old Laptops make great music servers too, Although I use a raspberry Pi these days because it takes less power
Just buy a wiim or a second hand chromecast audio and use an external DAC ...
I have a 70s nikko trm 750 with din plugs. I got a din to 4 rca adapter to connect the s10+ but i get very low output. Any tips ? Thanks!
Since I started this channel 2 years ago I was wondering if anyone would ever ask me about DIN plugs. 2.3million views later, you are the first!! My first stereo used these plugs back in the seventies and I've tried to avoid them ever since. As you are observing the tape record output is much lower level and needs amplifying you'll need something with at least 25dB gain and low noise. Phono preamps are not suitable due to the equalization, but this one looks like it is straight gain and should work, though I haven't tested it. amzn.to/41FE9nS
good morning, great solution. I wanted to know are there wifi headphones instead of bluetooth?Maybe you mean listening to music through speakers connected with cables, otherwise if you then connect Bluetooth headphones you have not solved anything, or am I wrong?
Is it much better than a Chromecast audio?
Unfortunately the input to my TV is an RF cable. Not hdmi. It's a new Samsung and it has no audio outputs whatsoever
You right 👍
Thank You Roger, just restored the modern TV sound via my classic 80's Kenwood stereo system with huge speakers. I've spread the word of how to do this via the HDMI ARC Extractor.
Hey Roger, I am looking for ways to hook up my active studio monitors to my Samsung tv & sound bar entertainment system. Now my Tv and sound bar both use ears or BT or Wifi. I thought The best solution would be to connect everything via Wi-Fi after watching your video. However, it seems that this device only works with an app - So my question is, would it work with the TV and put like watching Netflix? So, in short, I have a really great monitors that are analog, and want to integrate them into my existing sound bar entertainment system. The tv is the main audio source
Since you Are using the TV as a source It's best to use the TV HDMI ARC or optical out to hook up speakers. Your soundbar will not improve the sound of the monitors and will likely muddy things up. Best to connect the monitors using the adapter that I show here. th-cam.com/video/x-wtqgIFEYg/w-d-xo.html
that antistatic bag does nothing in there, it does not "dissipate" anything... it prevents static charges you may have on the body to reach the board while it's INSIDE of it, and that's it... a dissipation needs something to bring the charges to the ground, it's not "wireless" :D
Your point is well taken. I just got into the habit of only laying unenclosed boards on an antistatic surface when I worked on sensitive circuits. Of course this only works if you are wearing a grounding strap but old habits die hard. All this being said, putting the bag in the case will for sure do no harm, and I am not very concerned about ESD damage to a robust module like this anyway.
@rogergadgetguy that could prevent proper heat dissipation, too, though...
You need the Up2Stream HD DAC model for TIDAL or any HI-Res music service, wich is 150 dollars not 50.
I use Tidal lossless on the Up2 Stream mini, and it does sound much better than bluetooth. Getting the benefit of full 24bit 96kHz resolution is another tier altogether. There are many devices including the Wiim Streamers that will play Hi Res files without downsampling but you won't hear any benefit. without an external DAC which is extra cost again.
I use iEast oliostream and Denon Heos devices, but this project very interesting! Wifi dlna streamers 1000x greater than BT devices.
I just leave an old cell phone with a headphone jack plugged in the same way...( spotify works the same way with two phones, but is glitchy sometimes.) Saved me $50 tho
Something that could be useful to somebody out there: The Apple TV 4K hands down has the strongest Bluetooth signal I’ve used for watching tv. I watch a lot of TH-cam and I can easily walk from my bedroom with the tv on to the kitchen 30-40 feet away. Just something worth giving a try especially if you’re looking at one anyways. This was true on the 1st gen 4k and the current model. I have both
Also, keeping the device outputting the Bluetooth (in my case Apple TV) far from the ground. Mines about 5 feet from the ground.
@@Emancipatriot Thanks for posting. Good advice!
This is pretty cool! I wonder if they make one with a toslink output to the stereo? That would be incredible
They offer an expnsion board for $15 with SPDIF output just plug it in with the supplied ribbon cable I've tried it and it works great. www.arylic.com/products/expansion-boards?variant=32778796040277. They also have an expansion board with an upgraded Sabre DAC.
Hoarder? Meh!!! Collector of awesome equipment. That Marantz receiver is fantastic. That is considering going up against today's equipment. They have a sound that just seems warmer.
Yes it does sound lovely, almost as good as the restored Fisher X200 tube amp from 1962 that I have, the sound of that is magical.
I just hooked up an old iPad to my receiver using the earphone jack. The cheapest option. The cable only costs like $4.
Many ways to skin a cat, my mother used to say. Cables are good and cheap, but not what the kids are doing these days.
I need an extractor so that I can choose to watch a video or just listen to audio from my chromecast.
That is a great use case for an extractor. You can stream music through the Chromecast with the TV turned off. You can even connect the Chromecast to a Stereo with no TV, once you have the chromecast set up on your network.
Simply a wiim mini in a tuned up packaging 😂
For those who want it square not round.
Hi, great DYI project, but it still will be limited on sound quality. The cheap DAC is a cheap DAC.
Yes it is, and it still sounds much better than a Bluetooth receiver!
took you 10 minutes to say this?
Slow talker.
I bought the adapter featured in your video. Got it hooked up in a matter of minutes. Wow what a difference in the sound and all I’m using is shelf speakers. Thank you!
If you have an Apple device, a Roku is $30 and does Airplay (which is wifi not Bluetooth) and you can also stream video with it. I am sure it’s not the only streaming device with AirPlay built in.
Correction: $18 at Target right now 😂
@@AnonVideos That's a good deal! The Roku has a lot to recommend it for iPhone households. I have iPhone and Android in my home which is surprisingly common. You can add Airplay to Fire TV stick or Chromecast with the Air Receiver App ($3), and have a solution that plays well with iPhone or Android. The other thing about the Roku or any other video streamer is you'd have to add an HDMI audio extractor if you want to use it without a TV.
Please never roger your streamer
It's a pity most streaming providers automatically compresses the audio for streaming, so it is already missing a lot of information before anything else. This is still a good method or a uhf transmitter and receiver.
So far its only Tidal, Apple music, Deezer, Quobuz, and Amazon that offer lossless streaming. I switched to Tidal. If enough people switched, the others would have to follow.
Would you say this is similar to the google audio ?
Similar but not the same. The Google Chromecast audio was great for Android but had limitations with an IPhone. This one supports apple airplay. For Android use the 4stream app. many Android apps also work the same as the Google Chromecast, using the standard DLNA protocol.
can i connect it to my av receiver's hdmi out and connect the extractor to an aux speaker, im trying to listen to CDs (the receiver has a built in dvd/bluray drive)
The HDMI audio extractor would work for that but NOT the HDMI ARC adapter.
@@rogergadgetguy okay thank u!
Thanks what a practical video, the sort of project I would do, I’m always fiddling with boards off eBay, Great what you can buy for a few quid, preamps, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, adjustable psu etc.
Thanks for the feedback! I was wondering about more DIY videos because they are fun to make, but this one didn't get that many views till a couple of days ago. I love to get feedback on the type of videos you find interesting and entertaining. Thanks again
@@rogergadgetguy Its the algorithm, it just popped up, so I viewed it, if its not suggested then we never see them.
Way too much hands matey
Thanks for the feedback Matt.
Good job! Thank you Larry for taking time to make a beautiful tutorial!
Nice comment
I have new TV that had HDM arc. My sound system has digital/ audio. Is their a transfer system to plug digital/ audio in side and HDM arc out toTV on other side.
The adapter in the Video will take HDMI ARC in, and output digital audio either coaxial or optical to match your audio system.
I have been doing this for years. My latest LG has an earphone socket feeding into a Technics SU-V300 amp and then out of 44 year old Wharfedale laser 100's , sounds superb. I can also blue tooth flac and wav files from my phone. Sound quality just blows away sound bars.
The super skinny speakers in sound bars are about as good as the ones they used to put in TV's before even those tiny things would no longer fit. Soundbars use a lot of Digital Signal Magic to get the best from them, but they can't compare to good stereo speakers.
Hi there. I just watched this and it’s extremely informative.+1 sub. Please can you answer my query below for complete clarification. I have a Bose 900 soundbar with eARC. I also have the Bose subwoofer and speakers.i have a Sony tv that supports eARC. I also have an XBOX series X and a sky box (TiVo). I also have streaming services e.g Disney, Apple, Netflix etc which support Dolby Atmos.I want to get Dolby Atmos for all devices and services. Can I connect my Xbox and TiVo to the hdmi ports in my tv and then an hdmi cable from the soundbar eARC to my tv eARC to get Dolby Atmos? If you can help me out I would really appreciate it!
Hi the connection method that you are describing is the recommended method, and will give you the best audio that each of your sources are capable of delivering.
Thanks!
Thank you for the acknowlegement. Really appreciated.
Arc audio exctracts just nothing, this is fake DAC, no sound output, everything is connected properly.
I just bought hdmi audio extractor with one hdmi port, seems not working with any of my devices, just bought crap, tv is new with hdmiarc port I have many cables - no problem, more is good, I hate this stupid hdmi standard, this is for computer not for tv, tv is not smart enought.
Ungh.. I bought the wrong one. Thanks for the explanation. My inlaws will be happy now.
Hi Roger, your DIY approach is admirable but the market has voted & the Wiim Mini is king. It was available for $80 on Black Friday. P.S. there is no Bluetooth compression per se, the compression comes from the MP3 source the Bluetooth link carries. My experience listening to internet radio shows high quality MP3 broadcasts are available, you have to let your ears be the best judge. Cheers!
Thanks for the feedback I do like the Wiim mini too. The nice thing is you can mix the Wiim and the Diy streamer in the same home for a multi room system. It's like DIY Sonos. As for Bluetooth the amount of compression depends on the Codec the basic SBC Codec compresses more than AAC LDAC or APT x and APT x HD compresses less than these. You can hear the difference between codecs on a good system and none are as good as lossless Flac over Wifi. If you have an MP3 source it will be digitally transcoded for Bluetooth so you don't double compress, but depending on the Codec it may or may not be as good as the original.
My Bluetooth streamer supports A2DP & lower level codecs but by far the greatest variation in sound quality is the internet radio station source MP3. Of course, bit rate is most important & I have to assume the streamer always uses the appropriate codec! My best radio stations have CD like quality, many others not so much, with all sorts of horrible artifacts!!
@@trevorbartram5473 You are right about the lower bit rates, Nasty! Once you get to 192Kb/s things smooth out and the differences are more nuanced. This video covers sound quality differences between different Bluetooth codecs th-cam.com/video/gEy0fOa1zWI/w-d-xo.html
So it also needs a wifi router.
Yes that is right, the phone and streamer need to be on the same WiFi network.
Thank you for the info.
Stereo speaker leave out the midrange so you can't hear them talking, you need tv center speaker that are full range bar speaker that are tv mid range
Hi Thomas, I have helped people who have reported the symptom you are descibing. it happens when using an AV Receiver for stereo. It can sound great with a stereo music source and then on movies the dialog sounds thin and distant, What I've seen is that with the receiver and TV out of the box settings it switches automatically to surround sound even though there are only two speakers attached. The dialog gets much better if you attach a center channel speaker. The other way to get it to sound right, without an extra speaker, is to set the TV digital output to PCM. The TV will then downmix the 5 channels to stereo. If they are fed a proper stereo signal the 2 speakers will create a phantom center channel and the dialog will be clear and intelligible
Perfect tip, just what I needed! Thank you again
I bit the bullet and ran wires - Network switcher and Wifi receiver. Sold my Sonos to some unsuspecting Gen Z'r
It might be a trend, like Cable TV cord cutting. I read Sonos was considering launching a subscription model to boost their sagging profits. I wonder how that will go?
Ha! Roger the shrubber...
Too funny 😂 you emphasise the compression losses if using BT ! But completely fail to acknowledge the compression that Spotify utilises for their streaming service ! 😂 qobuz ! Cd or HD quality !
Yeah.. anyone who has a firestick or a Google thing .. can just use screen share via WiFi and achieve the exact same thing ! No extra cost 😂😂 this guy is genuine .. but Meh' bit dumb tbh
You are right! you can use a Chromecast or fire TV to do this without a TV, and I did a video which included using a Chromecast that way, th-cam.com/video/p4TrWi5DooU/w-d-xo.html but it didn't get as many viewers.
Omd 😂 do you think you've got 5yr old children watching this tutorial !?!?!? 😂... I cannot believe the unnecessary detail you've focused on ! 😂 dear oh dear oh dear ! 😂
Glad you enjoyed, and remember. when McDonalds prints "Caution the contents may be hot" on their coffee cups they are not doing it for 5year olds.
11:10 Hi Roger great video. I have just bought a projector with Bluetooth and aux which are the only ways of getting the sound out other than it's own speakers good but limited. On Bluetooth to my Samsung qr70 soundbar it is not synced. I tried pcm auto and Dolby output settings from the projector. I believe I need an analogue to digital converter so aux out to r/w rca in then optical out to the optical in on the soundbar can you recommend a good analogue to digital converter so I can use surround sound, cheers Joe
You are correct Joe, an A to D converter like this one is what you need. amzn.to/3DpCn00 .
Thanks so much! I didn't realise that my speakers had Bluetooth until you mentioned it. The cables didn't work for me, but Bluetooth does the job. Cheers!
