I think the want for a gritty/mature tone came from a lot of enthusiasm for the Power/Rangers fan film directed by joseph khan back in 2015. It portrayed older versions of the rangers who were grizzled amd scarred from the intergalactic wars they fought, which caused them to separate from each other and ill-prepared to fight an ancient villain.
Fun fact: that theme song needle drop wasn't originally there. It was added in based on test screening audience feedback. That's why it's just an older version of the track--it was much too late in the process to make a new version. Plus, Haim Saban doesn't really care for Ron Wasserman's work and has denigrated it to his face on multiple occasions. That's why Ron didn't score the original movie either
I did not know this, but I'm honestly not totally shocked since Saban was a music producer. I can see him being so extremely critical of another's music.
I liked the score for MMPR: The Movie. It had a sense of urgency and sadness not heard in the show. This movie's score is forgettable except for the use of The Movie's version of "Go Go Power Rangers" which wakes up the viewer because it sounds like Power Rangers!
People complain about how Hollywood preferred spectacle over character driven stories then they get one and complain. This was a great movie with a great cast and the fact we didn’t get a sequel with Tommy is criminal.
You have to read the room though. Power Rangers is not the franchise that people come to looking for a deep character driven story. It’s campy fun action targeted at 10 year olds.
@@masterace9543 True but neither does this movie. Like said in the video if wants to be serious but also wants to goof around and joke like MMPR. It wants to have its cake and eat it too and that creates a major tone issue

Japan is approaching 50 years of Super Sentai while the US has 30 years of nostalgia towards Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and none of the subsequent series in the franchise. Wasting millions of dollars on a Movie adaptation of a show only seen as "cheesy" or "camp" isnt going to net you hundreds of millions of dollars on its own. Super Sentai has a movie every year too so this bloated cash grab is a hilariously unstable way to make movies.
Japan has got everything right. Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Ultraman, and every other Tokusatsu have cemented their legacy in their culture and will be going strong for years to come. Hell I even still enjoy the retro Space Sheriff series. They put in their heart while making those, unlike these cheap Hollywood imitations.
One of those movies that has a really awesome cast that does a really good job. It gave me Chronicle vibes, those teenagers who find an underground rock or whatever and then get powers, it definitely was trying to be dramatic like Chronicle. That movie The Signal had the same type of dynamic happening. But then it also reminded me of an Avengers movie, but just in a small town instead of giant cities. I enjoyed it though.
Yeah Everyone wants to be Marvel NOW Even when it took them like 7 years to start taking risks and grow, and 7 more to become the big thing we all know
You can portray this franchise in a serious manner. I mean Transformers did it and even tho those weren’t all good, Bay’s aesthetic did reinvent the series for a new generation.
Really enjoying your videos. Suggestion for future ones, instead of saying "this year" say what year it is (2024). As the years go by it'll get confusing as if everything is "this year" it'll be outdated.
What is more interesting about this movie, the main cast actually have some rocket launch to their careers after they starred. The biggest star is Naomi Scott of course, but don't forget about the others. Ludi Lin has Mortal Kombat and Aquaman on his belt, Dacre Montgomery joined Stranger Things, Becky Gomez returned to her singing career, even RJ Cyler build some decent stuff in TV.
As a big Power Rangres fan, I’m just surprised they haven’t done an animated project for Power Rangers yet. I think it would definitely help the world feel more alive.
Unfortunately from what I heard Power Rangers as a whole isn't doing so well, it just seems like Hasbro immediately gave up on the Power Rangers despite being the ones that bought it. The comics adaptation is doing pretty well and there's gonna be a fun arcady beat-em up coming out but aside from those there hasn't been that much news about a new movie or show.
@@Gat720Duait wasn't just Transformers that suffered, it was also Pacific Rim as well. The Last Knight and Uprising didn't help themselves by also being awful movies but they also didn't draw in the audiences either.
I personally liked this movie and wish there had been a sequel. I know it wasn't the greatest movie of all time but I thought that it deserved a sequel.
It's funny how you mentioned they wanted to have a mega franchise like the MCU and the costumes where Iron-Man knock-offs, because that's exactly what they should've done, mimic the first Iron-Man movie! Think about it. The campy dialog but serious themes, the fun of the silly concept combined with the gritty action and aesthetic. It's almost a no-brainer. It's a damn shame they mimic everything BUT the core parts of what made the first MCU films. DC and Warner Bros are guilty of that too.
This is a perfect example of how MCU changed how Hollywood thinks: everyone is looking for a single IP to create massive profits instead of being creative.
I don't think it failed. I really enjoyed this movie. My only gripe (which is small to me) is the putties. I would have loved to see more choreographed martial arts stunts and fights. The screen, but the amount of time that they spent getting to really know these characters, what's actually perfect. I really cared about these kids. This needs a sequel.
I really enjoyed this movie- it had problems and was a very slow burn, but by the third act it just felt right- the Rangers and Zords in action went harder than it should have. Even in the slow moments, they spent it developing the characters and making them feel "real" instead of just high school stereotypes with one or two key attributes. So I appreciate it for trying.
One thing that I didn't like about this film was the time skipping; that didn't make any sense. I also didn't like how it was Mighty Morphin in modern day and how the megazord looked sooo different.
Seriously, where is the bright colors? Power rangers should always be super Bright and Colorful even when you do the darker Storylines like with Lord Drakkon
Funny enough there IS a gritty and serious Power Rangers short film on youtube that was made years ago that was actually better than this movie. It can be done, it just wasn't well executed
I remember that at the time there was a partnership with Twitch where they live-streamed literally all episodes from all seasons of the franchise in order to get people to watch the movie. People still didn't watch the movie.
I really enjoyed the cast and the explanation for their heightened abilities, which helped make their battle more plausible despite their lack of visible physicality for combat. The backstory with Zordon and Rita as the previous Red and Green Rangers was a cool touch, and the reasoning behind Angel Grove always needing protection added depth. Plus, the Breakfast Club vibes were endearing and fit the tone well. They had all the elements to make it work, but they lacked the vision to bring it together. Honestly, I could even overlook those suits if the story had delivered on its potential.
As a life long power rangers fan(age 32) I enjoyed this movie a lot. However, I wasn't expecting much so when we got scenes like the bonfire one, I was pleasantly surprised. I did think it was unfortunate that we didn't get a full team morph until the last act, but if you watch the show as much as I did, you'd know that a lot of the episodes have them fight the first fight not in the suits, then the second half of the episode is suits and zords.
Considering this movie was made while Marvel was at the top of its game, it befuddles the mind as to why the main cast wasn’t a star-studded group of A-listers. Movies during this period of time only succeeded off of star power.
In ten years, someone will do the exact same thing but with a more **shallow** approach, and it will somehow succeed, and everyone will backtrack to this movie going "but why didn't this work", and it's all because of timing.
I liked the movie overall - felt it was a bit underrated , but no doubt it had cheesy moments, very poor CGI and the ending was wayyyy too predictable. What I liked: The personal stories of each ranger as trouble makers (Although a few could have been fleshed out a bit more). The actors themselves also did a good job. Fight scenes were entertaining. Learning of their powers etc. What I disliked: BAD CGI... Horrible... Krispy K Product placement...? REALLY? Just so bad... Not a lot of time in the ranger suits (Majority of the movie is them without their powers). The overall look of the suits and Zords.. typical Hollywood to make them look weird/way too "Alien" like. Crap ending.
They should have made Goldar look more like he does in the show. They should have had hand held morphers like in the show. This could have been better.
I think the 2017 movie is poetic in a way; Power Rangers (the 2017 movie and the TV series) is so over-reliant on its source material (the TV series and Super Sentai) to even exist, yet it's embarrassed to fully embrace it, and actively bastardizes and worsens what people liked about the original material.
There was so much I liked about the movie and was so upset that it was bogged down with some major flaws. As a fan, I was able to look past them, but it was clear that the majority of audience wouldn't stop noting it. (Looking at you Krispy Kreme...) There was so much room to improve upon but first impressions are hard to do again and it's just so aggravating that this movie didn't get the appreciation it's getting now.
As a pretty hard core 90’s power ranger fan, I honestly did not mind that they morphed only towards the end. The character work kept me engage most of the movie. It felt like a pretty good buildup to the climax. And I thought overall the 5 rangers were casted super well. The movie had some serious flaws but it wasn’t something that ruined an experience. I’m pretty bummed out overall that there won’t be additional movies.
Personally I felt it was a good start. The main problem was there was not much Power Rangers in a power rangers film, but somehow I was okay with it. I liked it and would have loved to see more. As it stands, I give it a see every couple of years and enjoy it. Rita was sort of weird in it and Zordon felt more nasty than a wise mentor type, but that is okay. This was thumbs up in my book.
I really enjoyed the film, I'm grateful it exists, but I can see why it didn't go where they expected it to. For me, it's a one in a million compound of variables that somehow managed to collide into this unique take
What if… The second movie would feature Tommy Oliver as an antagonist under Rita Repulsa’s control but he broke away from Rita and helped the Power Rangers save the day. The post credits scene… Rita Repulsa returns to her throne room, only to see someone sitting on her throne and as the throne swivels around… Lord Zedd is here!
That's because the character dynamics were very much in line with 2012's Chronicle. Also, gritty reboots/adaptations were at an all time high from 2010 to about 2017 (Teen Wolf, Riverdale, etcetera).
So they had the First Class writers for this at one point, and fumbled that? That’s so sad to hear, dude. I actually enjoyed this movie when it dropped. It’s not great, but it was a fun watch and I really believed it could’ve gotten better had it continued. This could’ve been so cool had everything went well.
@krazytube15 especially since power rangers was popular since the 80s. Could've done the guardians of the galaxy road and had played music while fighting. While thinking both power rangers and guardians of the galaxy are similar. Both have a comedy angle with serious action when necessary.
I quite liked the movie and how it tried to develop its characters a little more than what Mighty Morphin did. A thing Super Sentai, Kamen Rider and even later seasons of Power Rangers show us is that this cheesy stories can have serious stories with deep and interesting characters and even dark themes. I do hope that whatever the next big Power Rangers project is embraces how silly the concept is without compromising while still telling a good story.
The problem with this film is the same issue as the earlier films: not enough actual power rangers. There should’ve been at least a couple morphing and ranger actions scenes earlier in the movie to build up to the climax. Rita and Goldar should’ve been more accurate to the original show.
@ Eh, the acting is better. Effects are better than the first film, but that’s more due to technology advancing and budget. Overall I think I enjoyed the 90s films more, just because they still had the familiar actors for the characters. But they all essentially suffer from the same issue from above: Not enough actual Power Ranger scenes.
First, as a hero film, the heroes really show up late to morph into battle. Two, the style though they may have wanted something contemporary, moves almost two far away from the original Power Rangers. And three, by this point Pacific Rim, Godzilla, and Bayverse Transformers had all been out awhile thst another Kaiju film kind of just got lost in the mix. It just didn't have the right mix to stand out, at least that was my thought.
In my opinion the jinxed this movie when they announced that this would get 6 to 7 sequels, like I remembered when this article came out and I was like why the hell would they say they should have waited to see how this movie did before getting ahead of themselves 🤦
I live where this movie was filmed and during all the shoots it was nice to see all the actors seemed to be having a great time shooting the film and they were all frequently seen hanging out off of set together
I haven’t seen it in a while, but I think the movie is ok. Personally I think the writers should have taken a look at some Disney Era Power Rangers, they had a knack for telling some actually serious and nuanced stories while keeping it campy and colorful. I feel like the vibes of those shows with a blockbuster budget could have been something incredible.
In my opinion, time travel movie could have worked really well because of Time Force. Right after mighty Morphin Time Force, it was the coolest one in my opinion
yah i thought the power rangers was ok, the visuals were really cool but it just felt like a very safe story, i would have had no idea they were planning on making more movies if you didnt tell me, cuz it sure didnt feel that way
0:54 excuse me you are shooting down the writers of one of the most well received X-Men movies let alone superhero movies of all time! in the Frick studios smoking!
Your thoughts on the movie are the same as mine critique wise, except I'm also a HUGE PR fan so the movie was far below average to me. For some reason instead of adapting Mighty Morphin' properly, the writers made an action-adventure Breakfast Club. I was immediately turned off by it at the very start when the prank was happening. Consistently in every Power Rangers series the Rangers are chosen for being upstanding, moral people. In fact it's kind of a joke that the MM Rangers in particular were almost TOO perfect, always volunteering and raising money for charity. No reason why the movie cast couldn't have the same backgrounds and sweetness of the OGs.
To be fair, Dino Thunder had a Breakfast Club set up. But that was only in the first episode, and one of them only got detention because the principle was literally evil. Plus we still got a fight scene in it.
I am in the minority that liked the 2017 movie. It could have used more action but overall it was a solid gritty slightly more realistic take on Power Rangers. I wish we could have gotten those sequels with this cast.

Which is wild because Wasserman's music is iconic to the franchise and every millennial can tell you that we get hyped as soon as we hear it.
Serendipitous.
@@jayb8934And yet they give you EXACTLY that in every series
Can't please everyone
@@connorharnage6697 Yes, but it doesn't take itself too seriously 😅
@@masterace9543 True but neither does this movie. Like said in the video if wants to be serious but also wants to goof around and joke like MMPR. It wants to have its cake and eat it too and that creates a major tone issue
I loved how the alien language sounded when Zordon spoke it
Man, I remember the toys for this movie absolutely FILLING up the shelves my local Ross. Even at second hand store prices nobody wanted them.
Of course, it aint 1993 anymore. Who'd spend tons of money of toys from a an old franchize many barely remembers?
And i grew up and loved Mmpr..as a kid.
Big facts
Japan has got everything right. Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Ultraman, and every other Tokusatsu have cemented their legacy in their culture and will be going strong for years to come. Hell I even still enjoy the retro Space Sheriff series. They put in their heart while making those, unlike these cheap Hollywood imitations.
Japan also had precure
One of those movies that has a really awesome cast that does a really good job. It gave me Chronicle vibes, those teenagers who find an underground rock or whatever and then get powers, it definitely was trying to be dramatic like Chronicle. That movie The Signal had the same type of dynamic happening. But then it also reminded me of an Avengers movie, but just in a small town instead of giant cities. I enjoyed it though.
Agreed
I honestly thought this movie was really good lol I enjoyed it 🔥🔥
I think most studios think franchise before the title page of a script is even written.
Yeah
Everyone wants to be Marvel NOW
Even when it took them like 7 years to start taking risks and grow, and 7 more to become the big thing we all know
You can portray this franchise in a serious manner.
Good point, I'll do that for any future videos
What is more interesting about this movie, the main cast actually have some rocket launch to their careers after they starred. The biggest star is Naomi Scott of course, but don't forget about the others. Ludi Lin has Mortal Kombat and Aquaman on his belt, Dacre Montgomery joined Stranger Things, Becky Gomez returned to her singing career, even RJ Cyler build some decent stuff in TV.
Naomi Scott the leading actress in the theatrical film, "Smile 2" for the first time.
I really liked it. Plus the cameos were fun, and the Tommy Oliver tease at the end.
8/10 for me.
woah
It was just okay
It sucked
This was actually a fun watch, wish it got a sequel
Me too!
The "It's Morphing Time" by Brian Tyler still is a masterpiece and makes me think what could have been The Power Rangers Movie!
It didn't help this movie either that Hasbro's other giant mecha franchise was suffering as well. People were generally done with giant robots.
@@Jes9119 I don't know about people, but big studios sure are.
@@Gat720Duait wasn't just Transformers that suffered, it was also Pacific Rim as well. The Last Knight and Uprising didn't help themselves by also being awful movies but they also didn't draw in the audiences either.
Ig you guys need watch tf one. If you won't watch good movies then how would you expect good movies from them ?
@@vishnugopalawasthi5888 I have watched TF One, what are you talking about?
Yeah Studios only see the success, but they never ask themselves what is it made it work.
This is a perfect example of how MCU changed how Hollywood thinks: everyone is looking for a single IP to create massive profits instead of being creative.
I completely understand why there were no sequels/reboots but i enjoyed the movie
I really loved this movie. Even with the slow start
Still bummer this never got a sequel, so much potential
because it was trash and didn't do well
They forgot who their Demographic is...
Kids.
No Adult wants to be caught in a Theater watching Power Rangers.
Sane
@@alfredeneuman-l5r Says who?
I liked this movie. Disappointed it never got a sequel. I wonder who would’ve played Tommy.
I actually really enjoyed the power rangers reboot and the cast. I think it was well done given the source material.
Sometimes I think I'm the only person who really liked this take and wanted a sequel with a true Green Ranger in this 'zoic style...
Planning a 6 movie big budget franchise around power rangers is crazy 😂
One thing that I didn't like about this film was the time skipping; that didn't make any sense. I also didn't like how it was Mighty Morphin in modern day and how the megazord looked sooo different.
Power Rangers are colorful, kinetic, and cheesy. The mistake was a try to make them gritty and serious
@@Neiri-qg2wk I know what your referring too. That one still had a better depiction of the Power Rangers Suits though tbh compared to this one's
@@dominiqueodom3099 100, the suits were perfect in that short movie
They copied the DCEU more than they copied the MCU.
To anyone that’s in the film industry, take this from a filmmaker in training. Focus on what’s in front of you in that very moment, not the future.
I remember that at the time there was a partnership with Twitch where they live-streamed literally all episodes from all seasons of the franchise in order to get people to watch the movie.
People still didn't watch the movie.
@@skatedurr The dates don't line up, I remember being there during college, therefore it must've been at least 2017.
The merchandise sales for this film was also abysmal. No little kid was buying that crap because all the toys were garbage
I have all the zords from this movie, and they were some of my favorite toys, so that's where you're wrong, ig
The zords were on the shelves long after the movie came and went.
I don't think little kids are buying any of the toys , because Power Rangers is their parents' franchise.
I thought it was pretty decent, but yea, could have done more of the Power Rangers in a Power Rangers movie.
Considering this movie was made while Marvel was at the top of its game, it befuddles the mind as to why the main cast wasn’t a star-studded group of A-listers. Movies during this period of time only succeeded off of star power.
I'm gonna be real with you:
This was good. This was fantastic. This was ahead of it's time. It's STILL ahead of it's time.
In ten years, someone will do the exact same thing but with a more **shallow** approach, and it will somehow succeed, and everyone will backtrack to this movie going "but why didn't this work", and it's all because of timing.
This was a good time. I enjoyed the characters and the villains being so fleshed out. I hope they make more
Really hope you make one of these videos on "Real Steel." Definitely had the right to become a franchise.
I remember actually liking that film, I'll have to revisit it
I liked the movie overall - felt it was a bit underrated , but no doubt it had cheesy moments, very poor CGI and the ending was wayyyy too predictable.
The series was fun, low budget and camp and thats why we loved it as kids
It was a really good movie. I don’t understand why there wasn’t a sequel
Elizabeth Banks' Rita Repulsa looks like Hela from the Thor movie
She looks like Divatox from Power Rangers Zeo.
I forgot the movie even existed until I saw this video.
Same 😭
As a pretty hard core 90’s power ranger fan, I honestly did not mind that they morphed only towards the end. The character work kept me engage most of the movie. It felt like a pretty good buildup to the climax. And I thought overall the 5 rangers were casted super well. The movie had some serious flaws but it wasn’t something that ruined an experience. I’m pretty bummed out overall that there won’t be additional movies.
Character work consisting of talk about lesbians and rape vans?
Personally I felt it was a good start. The main problem was there was not much Power Rangers in a power rangers film, but somehow I was okay with it. I liked it and would have loved to see more. As it stands, I give it a see every couple of years and enjoy it. Rita was sort of weird in it and Zordon felt more nasty than a wise mentor type, but that is okay. This was thumbs up in my book.
Truly, one of the movies of our times...
And it was right before everything changed in Hollywood
This film release inspired me to create a fan series that has earned 2 billion views and the channel has passed 22 million subscribers.
What’s the channel name?
I really enjoyed the film, I'm grateful it exists, but I can see why it didn't go where they expected it to. For me, it's a one in a million compound of variables that somehow managed to collide into this unique take
Yeah as a big fan of the rangers/super sentai this just was an absolute gut punch I wanted this franchise to succeed bad
What if…
The second movie would feature Tommy Oliver as an antagonist under Rita Repulsa’s control but he broke away from Rita and helped the Power Rangers save the day.
The post credits scene…
Rita Repulsa returns to her throne room, only to see someone sitting on her throne and as the throne swivels around…
Lord Zedd is here!
I love the 3rd act in this movie, but my main problem with the film itself was that it felt like a 2012 film released in 2017.
That's because the character dynamics were very much in line with 2012's Chronicle. Also, gritty reboots/adaptations were at an all time high from 2010 to about 2017 (Teen Wolf, Riverdale, etcetera).
i was hoping for a part 2 i thought the movie was fine
So they had the First Class writers for this at one point, and fumbled that? That’s so sad to hear, dude.
I actually enjoyed this movie when it dropped. It’s not great, but it was a fun watch and I really believed it could’ve gotten better had it continued. This could’ve been so cool had everything went well.
Those same writers also had an unmade script for the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot, but director Josh Trank wanted nothing to do with them.
That movie was lit I still remember how mad I was there was no sequel
Imagine if the movie was directed by James Gunn. How popular would the franchise be as it would rival Guardians of the Galaxy if done right.
Never thought of this. Damn they really fucked over this franchise lol
@krazytube15 especially since power rangers was popular since the 80s. Could've done the guardians of the galaxy road and had played music while fighting. While thinking both power rangers and guardians of the galaxy are similar. Both have a comedy angle with serious action when necessary.
I wish it had a real chance and got a sequel. I really enjoyed this movie a ton.
In spite I agree with you, this movie is better than the two 90’s movies we got.
@@MisterPuck To each their own. But we can agree not enough ranger action. Hopefully next time, that’ll change
4:20 I usually like when they put a Horse before the Carriage, but not when theres 6 sequels involved.
The horse is supposed to go before the carriage 😂
I loved this movie, so I’m sad that it didn’t get a sequel with Tommy
3:49 Letterboxd ratings are out of 5, not 10
I live where this movie was filmed and during all the shoots it was nice to see all the actors seemed to be having a great time shooting the film and they were all frequently seen hanging out off of set together
If I’m being honest if they had it successful like the live action sonic movie they could have been on the sequels
Yeah I forget it. The only thing I remember is the producer guy said "Oh, growing your monster is TIGHT"
Mastermind behind morbius and madame web uh oh
Haha I literally groaned
Morbius did become a meme for a year so at least it was iconic 😂
Ironically enough, I think that MCU style humor and quips would actually fit better in a power rangers movie
Right after mighty Morphin Time Force, it was the coolest one in my opinion
yah i thought the power rangers was ok, the visuals were really cool but it just felt like a very safe story, i would have had no idea they were planning on making more movies if you didnt tell me, cuz it sure didnt feel that way
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I was actually baffled when I heard it didn't do well. The only reason I could think of is marketing. 😔
0:54 excuse me you are shooting down the writers of one of the most well received X-Men movies let alone superhero movies of all time! in the Frick studios smoking!
Hearing that home video sales could have saved the movie is kind of shocking, 2017 was THAT long ago? Home video is not a movie's safety net anymore.
For me it was basically Power Rangers in name only.
I am in the minority that liked the 2017 movie. It could have used more action but overall it was a solid gritty slightly more realistic take on Power Rangers. I wish we could have gotten those sequels with this cast.
I’m part of the minority as well. But if the movie was made more recently, I would have felt differently.
