I remember being really impressed with the final battle as a kid. I went into it with low expectations, thinking it would really be a « kid’s movie », but the finale really delivered some spectacle
One of the biggest problems I've always felt this movie suffered from was its leads. In 2013, neither Nicholas Hoult nor Eleanor Tomlinson were known much here in America. Both have, in the years since, developed some fan base here (myself included, I love them both), but the two of them were not going to bring in half-a-billion dollars in ticket sales.
I remember my older cousin took me and my little cousins to watch this film, and it was a blast. This movie was always on my mind, and its cool to see others remembering it as well.
Dark fairytale movies from the early 2010's were so fun to watch. Little me would be so surprised seeing a different take on Snow White and especially this
Despite the CGI and corny elements, I actually recommend this often. I like that the story asks the question "what do you believe?" And that each character acts on that belief. It's a theme we don't see a lot of, and I like how the story explores the question from multiple angles.
This movie came out exactly four weeks after Another Nicolas Houst movie, the equally fun WARM BODIES, which made about the same amount of money in the US (about $70 million) but cost ONE EIGHTH of Jack’s budget (at $23 million)
Wow Can’t believe i found a review for this that’s 3 hours old lol, i just randomly remembered this movie after a decade of forgetting it existed and searched for a review 😂 but awesomely done man, keep it up!
I loved this film so much! Saw it in cinemas, me and my cousins were the only two in the room. I wasn't expecting it to be anything special, but I ended up really enjoying it. Saw it years later and it held up. Kinda wanna watch it again now. It's massively underrated for sure!
I watched this film in the cinema on its release, and I still enjoy rewatching it every two years or so. For me, the story and visual tone hits a good level as somewhere in the middle between family friendly and bone-crunching blood-spurting gore. Nicholas Hoult and Eleanor Tomlinson gave really good performances that makes their connection in their second encounter believable, and I think this connection makes Jack's own motivation to help in Isabelle's rescue plausible. I agree with your points including your mention of how good Ian McShane's performance is. When he gives the order to chop down the stalk, you can see from Ian's acting that it's emotionally crippling the king to do so, in his love for his daughter against saving his kingdom. Excellent video essay.
I watched this movie in theaters when I was in middle school. I absolutely loved it and rewatched it several times within the next year or two. I must admit, I forgot it existed until I saw your video but it's definitely one of the highlight movies of my childhood.

the same I remember seeing the first teaser trailer and knowing that it was originally called "Jack and the Giant Killer" before being changed to "Jack the Giant Slayer." I recall watching it in theaters and having a great time with the film. A couple of years later, I still really love it. While it's not perfect, I think it could be a great movie for introducing fantasy to new generations. Overall, I acknowledge that the film has its flaws. For instance, I thought the ending-where the crown is transformed into something that ends up in a museum-was interesting, but I didn't particularly like how it was executed. Despite that, it's a fun film, and I can't help but wonder what a darker version might be like.
I didn't know this movie even existed! I thought the video was about 1962's "Jack the Giant Killer," a simple, non-overblown (and fun!) fantasy in the style of Ray Harryhausen's films
What I remember about this movir was being really scared for Nicolas Hoult upon hearing of his casting, at that time the rumors about Bryan Singer were already going strong in gay circles.

While I don't remember much of this movie itself (even right after seeing it), I can say I do remember the good experience of watching it in theaters. I remember it was such a vibe watching this in the theater with my dad and brother during the dark spot in my life known as 2013. I was 11 (so basically in the target age range mentioned in the video) and was a fan of the original tale growing up, so I thoroughly enjoyed the movie when I saw it.
