A warm and very lovely palette, Stivi! I'm really drawn to Indanthrene Blue as well as Burnt Sienna and Yellow Ochre! Also I was so surprised to see the beautiful result of mixing Cadmium Red Deep and Green Gold!!! Gorgeous! It is truly glorious and its permanence situation doesn't take from its glory. There are real modern applications for this type of pigment. Please allow me to share this description that I wrote for this video, in case it's been obscured by TH-cam's display settings: "Genuine Red Madder Lake by Della Magna Watercolors uses NR9 as pigment. Obtained from the roots of Rubia tinctorum, Genuine Madder is a historical pigment that is cherished for its transparency, unrivaled richness and depth, and fine granulation. During the Medieval to Renaissance period, Madder, Woad, and Weld were the three staples of the European color industry. Although there are questions surrounding the permanence aspect of NR9 or Genuine Madder, watercolorists could still benefit from this heritage beauty by using display approaches that minimize the artwork’s exposure to harsh light. Excellent use cases would be sketchbook artists, illustrators, and watercolorists who digitize their paintings for commercial production. Prepared by following a traditional recipe, we’re fortunate in 2024 to still have access to Genuine Red Madder Lake or NR9 pigment through artisanal studios such as Della Magna Watercolors."

From what I've gathered, Schmincke would normally issue a limited color every year, Random Grey in 2022 for example. In Japan, Schmincke launched Peonia Pink. Ocean Grey was their special release, in collaboration with Cesc Farré. At the moment, they also have YInMn Blue and YInTiCo Red as limited edition paints.

Thank you! If I may share, that's because A. Gallo's is Rose Madder and Della Magna's NR9 is Red Madder. I have both and are equally beautiful! They exhibit distinct tinting strengths and in a botanical-themed painting, they could work as flowers in a garden setting.

For some use cases, yes. I prefer Della Magna's or Sennelier's PR175, depending on the painting subject and mixing capabilities that I may require.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I appreciate this exchange. As for me, I never developed any liking for the usual Cerulean Blue that is PB35. My preferences lean towards richness and depth, especially with skies, I love them to be realistic. The broad tonal range of PB36 allows me to achieve that. If I want a crisp, light and airy sky blue, I'd use a wash of Fra Angelico Blue or a nice spread of Michael Harding's Cobalt Blue. But for expressive skies such as boreal-themed or West Coast-inspired, I would choose PB36.

It truly is! This PB36 is a versatile blue, now that I am learning to appreciate this specific Cerulean. I love its robust mixing potential! There are plenty of opportunities for color directions, depending on need or use case.

I share the sentiment! It feels therapeutic to paint with Fra Angelico Blue after an exhausting day at work. There is something about this natural blue pigment that the soul finds soothing. I got the cup and saucer set from an antiquarian shop a while back and it's the perfect cup for espresso while painting.
