A first-rate 21 Red salute, Stivi! Love those mixes! Amazingly, even with this killer lineup, there are still maybe another dozen Daniel Smith reds. That's how deep their palette is. 😁🤩
Hahaha, thank you! We're not done rounding up the field. This is just the first battalion. The advance party! 😉😂 Thank you for being here, as always! 🫶
Oh yes, the darkest values appear to suggest so. The mid-tone and lighter washes though tend to come off as PO48 + PO49 or even Quinacridone Deep Gold. Thank you for pointing that out and for being here!
Just discovered watercolors and now, your channel. While I’ve never understood watching someone else do something, I thoroughly enjoy watching yours. Thank you for sharing this information and inspiration.
Thank you! I can relate. Scarlets always get us! That PY97 + PR233 mix reminds me of the almost endless mustard field that I saw years ago while on a road trip near Brownsville, Oregon. PR233 makes the earthy aspect known without being overbearing. It allows us to get that textural element without adjusting the overall color profile. Many people unfamiliar with PR233 complain about its weak tinting nature when in fact, it is its true power. "Subtle sophistication" would be the best way to put it.
I am drawn to Daniel Smith reds like the fire sign I am, especially, Pyrrol Red, Quin Rose, Quin Lilac, Indian Red, and Deep Scarlet. Your video made me fall in love with Perylene Red, PR178! I realize ive never tried their Red Jasper. Rhodonite Genuine is so pretty!
@@stiviwonders 🥰 I also really appreciate the comments and notes you add for each colour. They're really useful when choosing between colours. Swatch videos are also extremely relaxing to watch 👌😍
You're welcome! PR171 is one of my favorite pigments. Rich with emotion and mood. It's delightful to work with and absolutely versatile. The non-granulating nature of it makes it a reliable pigment for landscape paintings. Thank you for being here!
I agree! PR209 is not just beautiful but it is also a robust mixing color. Speaking of beauty, Daniel Smith's PR179 is excellent for Autumn-themed floral gardens or for night scenes.
I understand and sad to hear about the troubles you've been having when it comes to keeping sharp edges. The name of the tape is Nichiban #251 (I believe it's been renamed to 210 but the packaging still reflects 251). It comes in various sizes and for my swatches, I particularly enjoy the 9mm size. I would love to use something smaller but I haven't found them yet. One thing to note is that this tape works wonderfully if you're using high-quality 100% cotton watercolor paper such as Arches, Saunders Waterford, Hahnemühle, Sennelier, Winsor and Newton Professional or anything in that range that is 300GSM (and heavier). I use these on both 300GSM and 640GSM 100% cotton watercolor paper. The tape behaves differently, mostly unfavorably, when used on cellulose paper. I have gone through so many tapes, experimented and explored, and this tape from Nichiban wins this game. With right paper and good amount of pressure, the tape adheres nicely and tightly but offers a clean, non-abrasive release. It is absolutely refreshing to find a tape that works perfectly. This is a genuine experience and I am not sponsored or paid to say this. I hope this is helpful!
I am trying to find a true red in Daniel Smith’s watercolors. I have deep scarlet which is close. I am not ready to buy a bunch of reds, I buy in terms of what I want to paint. I lived on the gulf in Florida for many years, so I am buying more greens and blues but I still want the other colors too. I want to paint the beach, now that I am living in Colorado again.
Whenever I need a red from their line-up, the easiest way for me is to choose from their Perylenes, Pyrrols, Benzimidazolones, and Quinacridones. I normally end up with PR254, PR175, and one of the Quinacridones.
Please don’t be sad. I love that one too! There will be a Part 2 at some point and as the saying goes, “save the best for last.” This was getting lengthier than I had planned so I had to mindfully choose what could fit thematically and what’s useful for first-time users. What other reds do you love working with? Thank you for being here. ❤️
@@stiviwonders from Daniel smith I only have that one and alizarin crimson but I’m very interested in cadmium scarlet hue and cadmium medium hue as well as mayan red (if that’s what it’s called) from what I’ve seen those three look similar to pyrrol scarlet and I’m interested in them since pyrrol scarlet has been out of stock for like a year on Amazon 💔
Thank you for the additional info! You didn't mention where you're based at but if you're in the US, the Description box has the link to Blick (online). If you're outside the US, the link Jackson's Art is there too. These places normally have PR255 in stock. I have Mayan Red, however, I rarely reach for it.
@@stiviwonders I’m outside if the US and I actually ordered from blick a few days ago 😂 I approved my order so hopefully I’ll receive it 👍 I heard mayan colors are generally hard to rewet. Is that why you don’t use it?
Ohhh, I am happy for you! I hope it gets there soon. Mayan watercolors are actually delightful to work with. These days, the opportunity to use Mayan Red has not presented itself. Resolubility is not an issue. You will just need to give them a bit more time to re-activate. Every pigment is different and Mayan watercolors are some of those that require a few more minutes, if not seconds. I hope this is helpful!

Wow!! Liked it so much!! Very good type of videos for us to see and compare the colors 😍😍
Oh my goodness! The Mayan Blue Genuine/Pyrrol Crimson mix is beautiful!!!
Thank you! It's one of my favorite mixes too!
The Perylene red PR178 and the Rich Green Gold PY129 seem to give a quinacridone gold hue when mixed.

Great video! I love the Deep Scarlet...heck, all the scarlets! I always enjoy your mix section at the end. Hansa Med + Potter's Pink was very cool!

Marvelous! All those reds are strikingly beautiful! Rhodonite Genuine appears to be the Quinacridone of the PrimaTeks. Haha!
Thanks!
Oh wow, thank you for your generosity! I am so touched by this gesture! Thank you!
these are all such pretty shades! I think I only have like 3 reds 😂
Yes, all gorgeous. Realistically, however, I mainly use PR206, PR171, and PR175 these days. 😂

Quinacridone coral is a lovely color indeed. And Daniel Smith's perylene maroon has a more violet-biased hue than pr179 from other manufacturers.
By mixing the two colors above you can get a nice alizarin crimson alternative.

Hadn’t clicked for me that Naphthamide Maroon and Deep Scarlet were both benzimidazalone pigments- thanks!
Although it stands to reason; I knew DS’s Bordeaux PV32 (and their Carmine ?) are benzis
Wonderful! Yes, Bordeaux and Carmine are Benzimidazolones too! I rarely reach for them though.
Thanks for video ❤️

Could you do a greens, turquoises, teals in Daniel Smith?
I have already done the Greens. Maybe the Turquoise and Teals can be done down the road.
Can you share with us what tape you're using? Recently I have been having trouble keeping sharp edges 😢

@@lucianalavin9029 That's great news! I've tried so many and this one seems to work the best.
What if I want a bright red color that doesn't look orange? of Daniel Smith Which color should I buy: permanent red permanent red deep?
Permanent Red is fine. My personal choice would be Pyrrol Red PR254. It is a fire engine red.
