Another Year, Another Town
I like to try to create a character and story in my songs sometimes - try to write a song from a different perspective and life journey than my own.
Without the backstory, it is obviously a song about a drifter con-man, and can be listened to and appreciated for that by anybody.
If you want the backstory, well ... this one is based on the same character (Ontawauk, the half-French/half-Algonquin vampire) from "Song for Bansiedh" that I created for the onlilne AOL chat room vampire games I played in the 90's I later went on to write a novel about him (never published).
Ontawauk is a slave to a paranoid and insane ancient vampire, Inanqua, who sends him all over the continent to weaken or destroy other vampires that she fears may someday threaten her. So, he has to go around, city to city, pretending to be friendly and try to work his way into these other vampire's lives and power structures in order to destroy them, and then slip away without anyone knowing it was him.
So, basically, a drifter con-man, like I said, but with fangs. See?

On One Warm August Day

I wrote this in my 20's, looking back on a day from my late high school years. I'd been on a week long church choir trip to Montreat, and on that trip was the girl I'd been in love with for a very long time (she didn't know this or at least was good at pretending not to know). We had become good friends reecently and particualrly on the trip, and on the ride home she was having severe menstrual...
Song For Banseidh
มุมมอง 614 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
This is probably the 4th attempt at recording this song. I don't know what my problem is. Sigh. This one's sound is not quite right, either - the new mic-to-phone jack is great, but sensitive! So, major nerd confession. Back in the 90's, I was heavily involved in an online role-playing game based on the White Wolf system's World of Darkness on American Online (AOL). This was all text-based, and...
Lord Have Mercy on Me v2
มุมมอง 214 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
This version uses a lot of effects on guitar, voice and using the new mic that plugs into my phone. The sound level is not quite right. Still figuring this thing out. This is a song about faith and sin and facing external and internal darkness, and of course, calling upon the Savior to save us from all of it. Lord Have Mercy on Me G D Am7 No Moon in the sky No stars shining bright Just darkness...

This was one of the first songs I recorded back in March....but I forgot to upload it or maybe it was because it is a little too quiet. I don't know. This is a song about faith and sin and facing external and internal darkness, and of course, calling upon the Savior to save us from all of it. Lord Have Mercy on Me G D Am7 No Moon in the sky No stars shining bright Just darkness meets my eye The...
All or Nothing
มุมมอง 414 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Written in my early 20's for an unrequited love who I felt like I had to distance myself from despite our long, deep friendship because it hurt too much. It was an extremely difficult thing to do and painful for both of us, and I will never know if it was the right thing to do because it ultimately hurt our friendship. Decisions made from despair or dark places are often not great. All or Nothi...
Turned Around
มุมมอง 1321 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I wrote this probably 15 years ago. This song, while taking some bits and pieces from my young life, is fictional and was mostly me just imagining a scene from a movie and writing a song about it. I was also experimenting with an unusual rhyme and music pattern scheme (for me, anyway) - aabccbddb (and so lyrics/chord patterns in sets of three instead of my usual two or four). I had fun adding e...
Baby, I'm No Cow (Rejected Toxic Dysfunctional Male Blues)
มุมมอง 321 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
My dumb sense of humor at work again. This is, clearly, not based on reality, on me, etc. Just me taking toxic, insecure, dysfuntional maledom to an extreme for a joke.
And So I Came Here v3
มุมมอง 1321 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Another version of the song (about a spiritual experience I had in the mountains above Denver - see earlier version), experimenting with the new mic jack to the phone and harmonizer. And So I Came Here by James Burkey G D(no top string) F (no top string) C (no top string) Upon a great stone, overlooking valleys Twisting in their slow, ancient dance To a song only heard by those who dally Here q...
Darling Oh My Dear v2
มุมมอง 4728 วันที่ผ่านมา
Remade this one, mostly just testing out the new microphone-to-phone jack that my dear wife bought and gave me. It's one of my favorite songs I ever wrote and I really enjoy monkeying around with it - the guitar, the auto-harmonies, the effects, etc. DARLING, OH MY DEAR by James Burkey G D Am C Darling, oh my dear I guess I wish you were here Oh my love, I wish that I Could rise above The pain,...
And I Miss You Still

A song I wrote in my late teens/early 20's about a girl I was on-and-off in love with and always had a deep friendship with, and the separation of us going to different colleges that was very hard for me. It's a little simple, but sweet.
Ashes in the Wind

my imagination, one day, came up with a sort of movie scene set at the funeral of the patriarch of a powerful family with a lot of dark secrets, and the son has killed the father and risen up to lead the family, and this was a song based on that scene.

As previously noted, I like to write silly blues songs. This one is not based on anything real - just my imagination.
Across the Miles (Sunday Night at New Day)
มุมมอง 628 วันที่ผ่านมา
A folky/old country style song about a complicated, long distance, almost-relationship I had in my late 20's. We both loved folky and old-timey music, so i wrote it in that style. Across the Miles (Sunday Night at New Day) by James Burkey It's midnight here and my mind is far off and aways To a place I've never been to and a journey of two days Hovering over you tenderly while you lay Sleeping ...

Gonna Have Myself a Great Day (the Colonoscopy Song)
Stories in song! keen characterization universal types - nice work..
Bowser's! 'All or nothing' is alive lived well in its transparency - vulnerability = bruising. 'Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds.' Thank you.
This would be right up Aunt Diane's delight! Mine too! Thanks...
A winner! James Burkey - you are a lyricist supreme - packing life into a few words. The effect of the harmonizer is great. Thanks

LOL!!! When I was a young man in Chicago and the hordes came, some birds had such a glut on the cicadas they wobbled...lyrics are perfecto
James Burkey! I smiled through the entire piece. Uplifting and thoughtful with its zing you to think lyrics. You accomplished what you desired to show...and it made this old guy who shadows me say, 'when you gonna have some fun today, nikola? Thanks mucho.
Open Heart, thanks. Does every young manhave this experience? I think so - well done! Thanks for touching memories hidden in my heart.
