  • Wrote this at the end of the 17-year and 13-year Cicada event in Illinois, so like, yesterday.
    Cicada Song
    by James Burkey
    F C
They lived so many years underneath the ground
    G C
Now they only have a few weeks to look around
    F C
And to make sweet, sweet music on their timpanis
    G C
In order to find their baby mama up in the trees
    G
    Cicada, Cicada
    C
All the hatahs gonna hate ya
    G
    Cicada, Cicada,
    C
You sound kinda like a baililaka
A million within earshot, sounds like an alarm
Noisier than an airport but they’re not meaning any harm
They don’t mean to be a pest, but its hard to see their charm
When they land on your face or neck or hair or ear or back or arm
    Cicada, Cicada,
What was God up to when he made ya?
    Cicada, Cicada,
    Nothing can blockade ya
Three long weeks of 105 decibels
For some of us it’s amazing, for others a living hell
I know a few who’d rather have a three week colonoscopy
Than live through three weeks of this buzzy cacophony
    Cicada, Cicada
There’s a few who adulate ya
    Cicada, Cicada,
It’s a mistake to underestimate ya
