BSA BANTAM B175 NEW WIRING LOOM FITTED AND SWITCH GEAR SERVICED
I have a question about a problem. I went and visited England bought from a antique shop a mamod piston arm was rusted got rid of the rust and then every time I heated it up it would run for about 10-15s or less and lose all steam.
One issue is steam escaping on the mating surfaces between cylinder and back plate ( the tension can be increased by adjusting the nut behind the spring ) , the mating faces can be cleaned up by rubbing them together with Brasso. If the piston is worn i've attached a link with advice on how to cure that problem, also these engines need to be spun into action as they are not self starting and they will just sit there a blow all the steam if they're a bit on the worn side. New pistons and spares are available just try Ebay..good luck. www.tapatalk.com/groups/modelsteam/grooved-pistons-t25653.html
I loved my K10, never had plug problems but was forever cleaning the exhaust port.
Suzuki were quite generous with the oiling 😁
Absolutely brilliant video Alan like the clutch tool you could market those. Funds for all the other projects you do 😊😊
Thanks Russell ....i have my moments 😁
Excellent video Alan very good as always 👍 😊
Cheers 👍
A man down the pub said this is the very Suzuki that Barry Steen won his first race on.....I think he's exaggerating🤣
Must have had the wind behind him...
I thought I was watching a @robotcantina8957 video when I heard that music lol. Nice work Mr Tweed 😎😎
It's to be hoped you're keeping those 'Gentleman's magazines' under lock and key and away from Jenkin's eyes. Where would we be without thread repair inserts. They provide a simple solution to stripped threads especially in alluminium. Small Honda from the 80's? Oil Leaks and Honda's don't seem to go together. Thanks for the video.
That's what i thought Colin, but it is an issue on this particular model because its an over complicated oil seal which can only be changed by splitting the engine, so they didn't get changed ( unless you were a courier rider trying to making a living so you'd rip out the old one, bash in a new one with copious amounts of silicon sealer and call it done! )
Nice work Mr Tweed ... she lives to race again!
The Stan Stephens tuning stickers add at least 3 hp
@ when you had the barrel off, did you see any signs of port based fettling?!
@@thebracketfactory nothing to fear, its a sheep in wolf's clothing😁
Memories memories my first bike was a maroon Susuki K10 which my late uncle bought as a basket case, after rebuilding it he used it to get to work for a few months and when he brought my aunt over to visit my mother and Grandmother i was nagging my parents about getting a motorbike he had a quiet chiinwag with dad and said to me how much money have you saved towards a bike i told him i had £25 ( I'd been saving for ages!) he said I'll see what i can do leave it with me then the weekend before my 16th birthday he came over again ( my older cousin rode the bike over!) and said how much do you reckon i said £15 ?? That's a coincidence thats exactly what i was thinking, he made sure i got insurance and my license and the deal was done , I was mobile (1971!!)😅
Sounds like a great 16th Birthday Bill and at a time when life was more carefree than today 🙂
I learn something every time I watch, and love the cheery banter.
Glad to hear it Gordon 👍
Next day delivery. Sheer luxury. I am lucky if things arrive next week! I never knew you could stack the inserts. Makes sense as you say.
And i found out from Dean that the collars on the insert tool can be adjusted to a set depth ( i wondered why they had grub screws in them ) ...every day's a school day Simon 🙂
The joys of buying a motorcycle from Gary Gorilla and encountering his dubious maintenance malpractices………..
Unfortunately he owned a lot of cars and motorcycles in his lifetime......
And machine tools, it turns out.
@StuartsShed indeed, i think the son of Thor was the previous machinist on my lathe as the jaws of the chuck were worn in every direction ( hence the reason to buy a new one, it was beyond a light jaw regrind )
That’s one heli of a job Mr Tweed 😂sorry but I couldn’t stop me self
Boom boom.....here all week and matinees on Sunday 😁
We've got to see it back up and running Mr Tweed. 🤞🤞🤞
I'll keep plugging away at it ..
Reverse intro amused me. Many years ago my Bultaco was reluctant to start. When it did fire up it was running a bit rough. Girls watching. Gave it a handful of throttle dropped the clutch ...dumped me backwards into hedge. How they laughed. V simple 2 stroke engine...would run backwards almost as well as forward. Heady days.
Apparently this is something i need to watch out for with the Bantam 😁
Nice repair Allan. And looking forward to seeing the Honda. Cheers, Peter.
Its on the list Peter👍
Super dooper. You can also set the little collar on the insert tool to the depth you wish to wind in to, it will magically stop when you get there. Wonderful stuff. Best wishes, Dean.
Thanks Deano, I wondered why the little collars had grub screws on :-) !!!!!! ( every day's a school day )
My Norman Nippy used to occasionally run backwards as well!😂
Yeh, c’mon, let’s see the rest of the work on the Suzuki before we see the oil-leak cure on the Honda!! Really enjoying the bike repair work, thank you. I’m off to the shed by the tracks now. Cheeribye! Les
I shall fire up the camera for reassembly Leslie.
Better still use Timesets or a stepped stud. 😁
all good options Michael
Good job brother
Thanks
Did you heat treat the copper Gasket on re assembly?
The NOS copper/asbestos sandwich gaskets won't require heat treatment but if I was using copper sheet gasket then I would heat treat it.
Nice job! For a horrid second, I thought that you were going to drive the tap in with the milling machine. I should have known better.
oh ye of little faith Martin ;-)
Really good video, always like to see you work you explain things in uncomplicated way, definitely like to see reassemble of the suzuki 😊
I shall hit the record button then Tom.
You meet the nicest people on Honda, very informative Mr Tweed.
Thanks Mr Sills
Thanks Mr. Tweed, You're a heck of a guy! I used heli-coils on the handlebar mounts of my Yamaha... but if I told you how I drilled the holes out it would probably send you to the hospital. All the best to you and yours
I did see that episode and I am still having counselling!!!!
Another cracking video, I always make sure I can sit down and watch them properly. Your a clever man
Oh stop you old flatterer ☺️
@ 😂
Metric pitch is number of millimeters between thread peaks, not the number of threads per millimeter. Eg 1.75 = 1.75mm peak to peak
Mi papa tenia esa moto en Argentina
A good mix there Allan, I admire your patience, it must have been rather trying but I'm sure you'll get it sorted. Cheers
Thanks in your faith Jason 😁
A valiant effort Mr Tweed! I guess the ‘race’ will have to wait a little longer…😢
Ah its too bloody cold out at the moment 🥶
Just followed your method for Bantam crank truing after replacing a main shaft and conrod - got it to within 0.002" at each bearing journal quite quickly, but trying to get a smidge better just threw it further out - so I've settled for 0.002". I guess that's about as good as you can expect for a crank that's at least 50 odd years old that was probably made on equipment that was about 30 years old then! Did you get the engine running, and how did the crank perform?
Hi John, that's great to hear and to be honest with you getting within the tolerances laid down in the manual is a win as they are truly awful ( well not very true at all ) they may have been reasonable when BSA first manufactured them with fresh tooling but by the 60's i think everything was worn out, you only have to look at any unrestored B175 and most will have cracked rear mudguards and mudguard lugs sheared off of the rear frame due to vibration from wobbly cranks. Mine is still in pieces at the moment, the crank has been trued up again as it fell off of the stand which of course knocked out of true ( a mouse fart would upset it ! ) but cases have been repaired and i will eventually get it back together to try . All the Best Mr Tweed
Tsjutsjelow OMG
I suggest using new Ngk plugs. I've found Nos plugs, which are usually 50-60 years old don't hold up at higher rpm's, unless you can test them up to 9000rpm's on a sparkplug tester. The spark may look good when kicking over, but under pressure fades. This was my problem on my 65, S32-2
Thanks for the tip, I always carry a spare plug when riding 2 strokes.
A delight to watch. Profound thanks for the effort you put in.
Thank you Gordon
Sorry for being me,you could have made the custom head gasket as big as the cylinder and cut ✂️ spikes as to increase the surface area 👍
You worked out the squish band 1.5mm , get the head milled down get more compression, port the cylinder too 💪🤩🧐 we need more power, captain sheel 🏴 no take it!
I´m off down the shop to buy a new power band..... ;-)
@ 😂 make sure it’s nice & narrow about 7200 to 7500rpm
Great to have you back on our screens again and a very interesting project. Keep em coming😀
Thanks, will do!
That boy needs to come up the bounty next Saturday night i will explain the difference between dumplings made with suiet and those made with silicone ps am now out on day release regards bob
He does need an education Bob...the question was only asked the other day " how's bob? " so its good to know you're out on release..
Had some nice breakfast s at south warnbough in my time
Great work again Mr Tweed, always a joy. Tiddler Tinkerage, Mmmarrrvelous. Ask Jenkins to check the silencer isn't all gummed up with oily old carbon while its dismembered. Always worth it, was the bane of a Fizzy and that would shut down after a few miles, only to reconvene after a little sleep. Not saying that's the issue with this one, far from it, but running without the baffleage may show some improvement in perkiness when you have it all back together. You may have covered this already, your eminence, for which I profoundly apologise. Top Hole!
I will get Jenkins to pull the silencer before the next outing ( I may have checked it a while ago but can't remember )...
lolz British Empire pith helmet and then the full Kaiser, gotta love it, was hoping for a Knights Templer! next time XD
One for the Christmas list...
Infuriating - but serious tenacity. You’re very close and it will be a top runner. Great work on home made tools and parts. 👍
Cheers Stuart👍
I was going to comment on your hat, but you might have accused me of taking the pith.
Perish the thought...
That was a lot of dismantling to get at a coil. I did wonder with all the TV engagements you'd forgotten about your TH-cam channel. Does Jenkins have his own channel, I'm sure it would be very 'interesting', Nice idea of a catch up video on what's going on at Tweed Towers.
Unfortunately Colin the TV work has gone quite and enthusiasm levels have been a bit low....but I´m getting back to it.
I'm shocked. Shocked I say! You didn't knurl the end of that flywheel puller tool. And we thought you were a gentleman! Did you anneal the aluminium head gasket? Is there any worry of corrosion between stainless washers on the head on the aluminium head? Stainless and Ali together always makes me feel twitchy. I know the too many projects thing. I really need to sort out my LE. I can't get it into any more pieces so it's time to start replacing them and put it back together!
ah yes Simon, Knurling, the easy way to ruin a nice turning job ( not one of my favourite turning exercises ). I did think about annealing the gasket but thought I´d probably melt it , but have managed to locate some original copper/evil sandwich head gaskets when the head goes back on...............and anyway you haven't got time to be shocked you've got a Velo to rebuild ;-)
To be fair I've never quite got the hang of knurling myself! For annealing if you don't have oxy-acetylene to do the soot burning off trick black Sharpie marker works too. Scribble some lines and heat it until the ink disappears. Can't do LE right now, am at a critical stage with the Riley body.
Tinkly sound sounds like preignition, probably made worse by ethanol fuel. Ethanol makes jetting leaner.
it is the modern evil..
👍
