I was Advised to Use John Innes number 3, and to Avoid Peat Free soil. Everywhere now peat free , even the compost ?? How do you prepare your Soil ? you use pepples or grit sand ?
@garymarshall1246 I personally ues 25% of each of the following. Garden soil, any good compost, perlite and sharp sand. Mixed really well. 👍
What Protection will you Take for the Butyagrus eriospatha this Winter ? Will haverhill , Suffolk be ok ? i was going to wrap it in fleece and bark around palm in a Raised bed, of at least 6 inches above ground using catus mix as part of its free draining mix . Any Advice Jim ? Gary
@garymarshall1246 I will be using a fleece bag on mine. But only on minus temperatures nights and taking it off again on plus figure days. I wouldn't recommend leaving wrapped for long periods. You may have problems with mould or rot.
@@jimspalmsuk5098 so next year you will place in ground your Butyagrus
@jimspalmsuk5098 can you advise me on preparing raised bed soil.. As everywhere is peat free and hardy palms said avoid peat free at all costs
I just got a £299 mule palm.. Can it go into the ground now? Only worry about being outside in a pot. I was going to get a pygmy date palm but unstood not possible in Suffolk. Then was going to get a £119 butia jelly palm until I saw the Butyagrus eriospatha
@garymarshall1246 I personally would avoid planting it this time of year. I have put my potted butyagrus in my summerhouse for the winter. It will be fine in a sunny spot until you get minus temperatures, when you want to protect. Shed, garage, greenhouse or conservatory. Or if you have a sunny spot next to your house with an overhang. 👍
Hi do you protect your olive tree
@PlantMad Not at all, it is right next to the house and gets full day sun in the winter. Seems to be fine 👍
They've done pretty well for a bit of tough love
Great selection what is that agarve the yellow & blue? Shower door genius 👍🏼
@@geesgardeningclubuk5247 Agave americana varigated 👍
Lovely display.
Hi, I would like to know if the cahamaedora elegans survived or not. I’ve just bought 2 from Tesco clearance after seeing someone on the forum said theirs survived. Thx
Thay can take cool temperatures but won't survive a uk winter. 😕
@ it… died?
@fansaaga4033 The big one I had died, I have a small one which has survived 2 winters in a unheated greenhouse.
@@jimspalmsuk5098 what temp took it out?
@fansaaga4033 A couple of -4c will do it. .
Thanks for updating!.. Do you know on the trachycarpus, mine also has the second trunk, are these part or grown from the main trunk, or is it a totally separate tree, my second smaller one has thrown out one leaf since the summer
Trachycarpus are single trunk palms, so they will be 2 separate plants. 👍
Cheers @@jimspalmsuk5098
Thank you!
Are they like Phoenix canaries is in terms of hardiness?
@@fansaaga4033 Very similar hardiness, phoenix canarianis foliage tends to hold up better in a freeze. But washingtonia will bounce back quicker in terms of faster regrowth 👍
@ so If my 40cm canary survived 3 years no damage i may have a chance right?
@fansaaga4033 I would say so, they will need a year round sunny position .
Thanks, good info, how about an update on the b&m trachycarpus?, mine not grown one inch yet 😂
@@EastCoastTropicalGarden Update coming soon 👍
Hello Jim great Films as always,I’m in Norfolk in Gorleston just off Marine parade there is a Washingtonia robusta about 8 ft high looks really healthy, I’m going to have a look in winter to see if they protect ,being next to sea really helps . Might try one now .
@davegreenthumb I drive through Gorleston a fair bit and I think I know the one you mean 👍 I'm in lowestoft and there are a few washingtonia about 10 foot + .
Have a look also on Church Road, just before the Chinese, huge one there
W. robusta is really worth to be grown from seed. They are so fast and you can weed out the wimps. I always grow my seedlings in my local conditions that way the strongest can be selected and planted into the ground. They are usually a bit, sometimes quite a bit hardier than from the store. When you're zone pushing this little difference can make ALL the difference. If you want big palms buy field grown ones from Italy or Spain they are usually as hardy as in the books (to a certain extend).
@@uranusneptun5239 Spot on 👍
I like to call it "zone denial"
@@dibblethwaite That's a good one 👍
Hi Jim - back in 2015 i had a Queen Palm go through 11 hours below freezing with a peak low of -4.7 ( Obviously this is an exception to the rule )
@@albey1816Interesting, my small mountain queen took -6c 2 nights in a row with practically no damage. I was very surprised it did so well. We don't normally go that low in my area.
Hi Jim. Can't leave my contact details on this. How does one reach u by email or social media?
@jeromephilipon750 Hi, I am on Facebook (jims palms) 👍
Garden still looking lush. Great work, looking forward to seeing it develop next year with the new centre bed
@tdmciver1 Cheers mate, not looking to bad for the time of year 👍
This year as I'm starting to accumulate my palm collection, theyre all in pots. What should I be doing to the actual pots when the palm is under cover or in the grow tent? Do these need to be wrapped or protected to minimise freezing of the soil? Havig them off the floor would be a good idea?
@essexhognose1808 Most of my tender palms in pot's are in my shelter on slabs, which to a small extent absorb warmth day time and release during the night. If very cold for along period I will put a couple of layers of double wrap round and underneath the pot's. I wouldn't leave on all winter , as you need good drainage.
Hey Jim, thanks for the info and great to see you addressing both sides of cultivation: winter frost & summer heat. A lot of people only looking at winter hardiness, and then they get a Sabal and they find out it pushes a leaf every 2 years in this climate! Myself included in this group... How would you rate L chinensis against Washingtonia robusta or Phoenix canariensis in terms of frost tolerance and ability to grow in cooler summers? I would be cool to see a comparison video on these marginally hardy palms if you're interested
@@finnkel I will do a video on the subject soon 👍

Hi jim. Do you leave Wash. Robusta palms out for winter or do you protect them etc..
@TropicalJungleIreland I have 2 in the ground 1 in the front garden and 1 in the back garden. The one in the front I do nothing to protect, and it seems fine every year. It is in full sun. The 1in the back garden I do put a rain/frost shelter over. It only gets a couple of hours of sun in the winter. They have both been in the ground for 5 years now, and still alive and growing well 👍
garden is looking great!
@@richf_tropical_garden_projects Most things are holding up well for this time of year 👍 I'm loving your new pond project looking fantastic 😃
Your garden still looks fantastic Jim🤩 . Your centre bed will look lush and green with plenty of Cana think it will look brilliant. I do like growing things from seed myself and always taking cuttings from varied things. Canna is one of my fav from seed grow loads each year. Got my hands on some mixed Abutilon seeds for next year, see what flowers I can get then keep my fav and pass the rest on. I do like growing banana from seed as well seen what they become is a great feeling each year as they size up. Oddly enough I still not got a hardy begonia in the garden lol i will put that right next year 👍🏻
@Plant_Mad_Paul Bananas I've found to be the hardest to germinate seed. Only managed it once but is very satisfying 👍
Прiвет шикарное садь ❤ так держать!!!!!
Great Vid Jim...wish my greenhouse was as big as yours lol ... still getting mine ready for the winter
@markchitty6505 Size isn't everything, I consider myself lucky to have what do, I don't take it for granted. I'm still learning as I go, and love it 👍
@@jimspalmsuk5098 ... same... learning all the time about gardening... keep those vids coming Jim 😁
Nice looking Cyathea, not cold hardy at all compared to other tree ferns?
@essexhognose1808 cooperii can survive a uk winter with protection, but will probably defoliate. For me just easier to keep potted and bring in each winter. 👍
I live in the tropics and have to smile.
Just discovered you. Enjoying the videos. I like what you've done with the shelter. I've looked on temu and can't find any clear tarp cheaper than £40. Can you share the link please. Thanks
@joannedarke7821 The problem with temu is the prices go up and down all the time. I bought the tarps 10 weeks ago, they took 8 weeks to arrive.
Done a top job Jim 👍🏻 looks great
A bit off topic regarding young palms, what size would you start to plant out from pot to ground? It would be nice to start the garden footprint next year rather than growing everything in pots
@essexhognose1808 Hi, it would depend on what type of palm and your location. If your talking trachycarpus or chamaerops, you can plant out at any size. Canary palm or washy, I'd keep in pot's and get some size on them first. Alternatively you could plant any out if your willing to protect them 👍
@@jimspalmsuk5098 yep, I've got a few different Trachycarpus locales that I would want to get down next year. It might mean a few cloches or covers for a while but I'm on the Thames just outside a London so not too chilly in the grand scheme of things The small Butia, Brahea and Jubaea might have to wait a while as they might take a bit more forever home planning. What about the Sabals? Best to try and get them established in the ground to encourage growth?
@essexhognose1808 I have a lot of sabals and they are slow in our climate. I have 4 planted in the ground. Most of mine are in pot's in the greenhouse. Trying to get a bit more size on them before planting them out. They are hardy but need heat in the summer to get them growing well. 👍
Garden looks amazing, Jim! Best I’ve ever seen it! You must be very happy with it!
@palmsexoticsuk2194 It done alright this year considering the poor growing season. A few changes to make next year, looking forward to it already 👍
I love that plant with the red leaves at 13:40 minutes. I Forget what it’s called. Yours looks good. 👍🏼
@@cherylmart6338 Is it the persicaria red dragon?
I like how your borders are so full and crammed with plants to great effect. Where is the queue for a garden visit and plant swap?
@jeromephilipon750 I'm always up for plant swaps, and if anyone wants to come for a visit, I'm up for that 👍
@@jimspalmsuk5098 A visit in late spring would be great 👍
Hi Jim, where are you? Im in Gower, South Wales....!
@@benburgess3964 I'm lowestoft in Suffolk 👍
Very impressed with the size of the Robusta leaves in the back ground
@essexhognose1808 The washingtonia has done well this year considering the rubbish summer. The leaves are pretty close to 4 foot.
Yeah that washy's definitely a belter 👌 only thing is it's probably less cold tolerant than the large cidp you have, got a 4 foot robusta out back, no clue as yet how I'm protecting it 🫣
@stephenkeeble6857 Keeping it dry will help, over head shelter really helps. That's all I do with mine 👍
@jimspalmsuk5098 cheers for the heads up Jim 👌👍🏝🏝
How are these doing now? How would you overwinter these? Do you cut all leafs off then wrap with flecce?
@rickyfox9797 They have done well this year, I did look at them in a video last week. Garden walk through. I leave the leaves on and wrap with fleece. It's gone through the last to winter's with no problems 👍
@jimspalmsuk5098 thanks for reply ... At what point (temps) would you start to think to wrap them? 😀 mine are in a big pot
@rickyfox9797 I won't do anything with mine until we due a frost. I will say I have lost these in pot's overwintering. They are easier to overwinter in the ground. But that might be just me 🤔
@jimspalmsuk5098 Thanks 😊 Do you have any colocasia plants do you leave them in all winter?
@rickyfox9797 I have lots of colocasia I leave in the ground. Will be doing videos on all sorts of over wintering tropicals over the next few weeks 👍
Do you leave your Ensette Maurellii outside over winter, or dig them up to move indoors?
@@tedscott1478 I will dig them up before the first frost. Pot up in dry compost, cut all leaves off except the centre leaf. They live in the conservatory over winter light but cool , min temperature 4c 👍
Hi Jim palms. May I ask where you got your cordylines and palms
@jimmyalvinewart6361 Most of the plants I buy are from local garden centre's. Some of the more unusual stuff I find online. Palms are normally from ebay, the plan centre or hardy palms. When I buy something of interest, I will always do a video on it 👍
I'm planning a circular border in my front garden. Currently I'm think a Ensete ventricosum'Montbeliardii in the middle with Colocasia mammoth "if can find any". Then finish off with some low level bedding plants. Obviously very seasonal and plants will either need removing for winter or protecting. I'm looking into edging and I'm not entirely sure what I want to do at the moment? But obviously cost and longevity also come into consideration.
@David_Banner Sounds like a good plan, there's loads of options out there for edging but the plants will take centre stage 👍
That cerifera was such a bargain. 🎉. Looks great where u put it. Two of them left of that size in my local homebase and watching them like a hawk. Currently £80 each
@jeromephilipon750 They will reduce them so, no doubt 👍
The new edging looks good, Jim!
@palmsexoticsuk2194 Wasn't sure at first but I think I like it 🤔
Looks great Jim. Deffo feeding the soil for next year, I’d love to do it that thick very quickly get fed up of washing me dog tho 😂
@Plant_Mad_Paul I've had to put up a temporary fence up to stop the dog getting to it. He love to eat it for some reason 🤮

What type of lawn mower do you use to cut your grass?
@cherylmartin6338 I have a worx battery powered lawn mower.
That's a lot of horse sh*t 😂 I'll hopefully be doing the same with some bare ground for next year
@@essexhognose1808 It certainly smells interesting in my garden at the moment 👍
@@jimspalmsuk5098 biggest problem I've got is that it's my front garden, thankfully it's not hot and summer with the windows open
@@essexhognose1808 you wouldn't want that.
I like the new edging, those log rolls do have their draw backs, may have to go check them out at b&m . Like the bed extension too, will look lovely planted up 😊
@estherterrier6400 I'm already excited for spring so I can get stuck in 😃
Looks great
6:59 does that aeonium overwinter outdoors? I bought one this spring😊
@fansaaga4033 They are tender, I've had some outside for several winters and survive. But definitely not hardy, but in a unheated greenhouse and keep dry. If you live in a really mild area you can try, but it's a gamble.
