I've been seeing that the Sumacs are becoming popular with UK gardeners. Where I'm originally from in Southern Ontario the Staghorn Sumacs are small trees/shrubs that grow on the sides of roads and form thickets that produce dome shaped structures. They are extremely cold hardy. Back in Ontario it's not something that anyone would plant in their yard, and you would never see them for sale so for me it's not something that I have ever considered as a tropical style plant. But I can see why you would think they fit in, it's all just a matter of perspective. FYI - You can make a lemonade type drink from the flowers in case you didn't know. Three other "tropical" looking trees from Ontario that you might consider looking for are the Paw Paw (Asmina triloba), The Kentucky Coffee tree and the Sassafras.

Well done Jim, you do get some bargains! I think your Rhus is the bargain of the day. I bought one about 2 1/2 years ago, 2 litre pot and it's no bigger than 3ft. It is still in a pot, that probably has some thing to with it. I was on mission end of last year to add some larger trees to create a micro climate to help with winter frost. Along with a large Photinia and Portuguese Laurel, I bought a 7ft sllk tree Albizia Julibrissin, that's another deciduous tree that looks tropical and is very hardy.

would love to see a hardy colocasia comparison of pink china vs gaoligongensis vs burgundy stem vs fontanesii vs any others found to be hardy. A lot of people only want to grow one or two types so it'd help with choosing

@@Harry-qy5gn Yeah, I do pop in there when I go that way. Taverham garden centre just round the corner.
I do prefer the Beccles one, better lay out.

@@jimspalmsuk5098 I normally do a Taverham and Urban Jungle Norwich round trip, i agree with you the Beccles store is far better layed out, and the display beds are great as they also give you an idea of what the plants will look like when grown on a bit more. I would have loved to have seen a pic of your car trying to get those trees in, did they have any other tropical type trees in the sale and how many sumac trees did they have left Jim i wouldnt mind given them a visit via Urban jungle ? .

@@juwelkeeper There was only one sumac , which I purchased. They did have loads of £10 eucalyptus.
It was a struggle fitting them in the car, I was surprised there wasn't more damage to the trees.
