Mad About Gardening
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 5 พ.ค. 2020
Welcome to our channel. We are literally mad about gardening and plants, particularly hardy perennials. We have a keen interest in naturalistic planting and plant propagation. We are against using chemicals and try to make our space as biodiverse as possible. Our passion comes from a genuine love of plants that we've had since childhood.
Join us in our UK Cheshire garden, where we'll be sharing our tips, successes and failures. With many years experience, both professionally and through our own gardens, we hope to share our love of plants with as many people as possible.
Over the years we have had many wonderful opportunities including creating some stunning planting schemes for our clients, planting show gardens at RHS Chatsworth and Tatton Flower Shows, volunteering at RHS Bridgewater Garden and meeting many knowledgeable plants people and garden designers.

November Gardening Jobs & Tasks | What to do in the Garden in Late Autumn | Hardwood Cuttings
Late autumn is still a busy time in the garden with many tasks to complete before the weather gets much colder. In this video we show you some of the jobs we're doing during the month of November including taking hardwood cuttings, planting garlic, saving leaves for leafmould, planting tulips, dividing and planting perennials, seed sowing and getting paperwhite daffodils planted.

Thanks so much! Much appreciated 🙏 ☺️
Sorry if I missed it in the video, but can you leave root cuttings outside over winter? Like doing it now in november and letting it sit in a container over winter and expect growth in spring? I live in Sweden, USDA zone 6b.
@hannablom5803 Yes, you can take root cuttings now and over the winter and leave them outside, just make sure they don't get too wet as they are prone to rotting.
@ thanks for answering, and for such good content of your videos!
@hannablom5803 You're welcome, thanks for your support 😊
Paul, would it be necessary to lift the Darwen tulips after floweing or can they be left in situ ? Also, I've been gifted some perennial clumps like peonies and phlox - can I still plant them now in November? And, what is the watering regime for seedlings placed in the plastic greenhouse now - how often would they need watering during winter. Just shows how much you pack into your videos 🤣🤣
Yes, the Darwin tulips can be left in situ as they should perform well for subsequent years. You can continue to plant your perennials and just ensure your seedlings don't dry out throughout the remaining autumn and winter. Keep a check on them weekly and more frequent if the temperature is mild. Lots to keep you busy during this month! Happy gardening 😊
@@MadAboutGardening Yes, thank you - you are keeping me busy! 🙂
What type of geranium did you divide?
I'm not completely sure but I think it's an oxonianum type.
Thanks for all your precious advice😍
You're welcome, thanks for watching as always 😊🙏
Great advice Paul. I gathered leaves last week and managed to fill four big compost bags. My brother is always glad to give me some as I don't really get any in my own garden. It's been such lovely weather today so I planted some Tulips in pots. You look like you've had some nice weather too. It makes all the difference doesn't it?
Thanks Wendy, I'm sure your brother is only too pleased to give you his leaves and its good you make good use of them. At this time of year, every sunny day is a blessing. It's still warm during the days at the moment too which is also good as it saves on the heating too! Take care xxx
Where do you buy the white pebbles?
We got them from The Range 👍
@ thanks I’m excited to try it when I can get hold of the supplies!
@loopy18lau Hope you mamage to get some, you won't be disappointed with the flowers and the scent!
Will try the leaf storage in the bin liners! thanks great tips now going to do some forsythia cuttings and sweet pea seed sowing ..
That's great! Glad you have enjoyed the video and are going to try some of the tasks for this month. Thanks so much for watching 😊
@@MadAboutGardening thanks Paul - I have noticed in the garden that my summer plants are coming up again - Ranculus in pots and ones I planted in the earth - also my summer Anemone in a pot. Should I just leave them or cut them down to ground level? Worried the first frosts will get them. Any advice great received
@ladysouthwold I would just leave them, they are probably confused by the mild weather but will sort themselves out once we get into winter.
@MadAboutGardening Cheers Paul 😃
@ladysouthwold You're welcome 😊
In the spring of next year, after your forsythia plant in the ground has flowered, could you show us how to prune forsythia properly, please? If you time in one of your videos, please show us how to prune weigela as well. Thanks.
We'll add these to the list of jobs for the videos next year. Many thanks 👍
Also if you have heavy clay soil, get comfrey booking 14. You can use the leaves as fertiliser, as in this video, but also the roots go so deep that it will bring the nutrients up to the top of the soil to support your plants, plus bees love it.
Great advice, thanks 😊
From then to now you’ve both done an amazing job ❤
Thanks so much, it was a very special garden to create and brought us a lot of joy 😊
Is Ben not an outdoor kitty? I’ve always had cats but my new fur baby I adopted and is not allowed outside and doesn’t seem interested. I miss kitties following me round the garden but don’t want to stress her out.
Ben was an indoor cat but he passed away two years ago. We have Andrew's nans cat now, an elderly ginger cat called Honey, also a house cat. If yours is happy not going out, just let her do want she wants, she's much safer indoors anyway 🐈👍
These two guys are brilliant and so inspirational ❤ If you ever visit Leeds guys, please pop in and give me advice. Unfortunately I’m so behind in my achievements, due to having an autoimmune disease and I live alone, but my garden is my therapy. 🙏
Thanks so much! Don't worry about what's not been done and celebrate what you have achieved. You can't beat spending time outside for a bit of therapy both body and soul 🙏
Year two, Spring. What is the blue climber named? I’m guessing a clematis?
You're right, it's Clematis alpina, a lovely plant with drooping flowers.
Love the colour you painted your summer house ❤ maybe one day I’ll be lucky enough to get one 😊
Thanks, we spent a lot of time in this garden and summerhouse during the covid lockdowns so was very grateful of it 😊
How should you care for the cuttings over winter? In a cold frame?
As Verbena is one of those perennials that isn't bone hardy, best to overwinter them in a cold frame to be sure they survive. Plant them out next spring. Thanks for watching.
Hi, I watched your video which was very helpful, thanks. First time for me planting Alliums, so wanted to ask, from your video it looks like you just put the pots under somewhere which is sheltered from rain? So a couple of possibly silly questions. Won't they dry out over winter, so do you water them occasionally? And, assume they don't need any sun while overwintering, as I'm unsure where to put mine, but will definitely need to cover with wire as we have a lot of squirrels. Thanks.
Thanks, glad you found the video helpful. They don't want to be bone dry, even under our potting bench, the pots were still able to soak up rainwater from the floor so they were never completely dry. The roots will be developing before the shoots appear so just keep an eye on them and water sparingly through the winter. When you see the shoots appearing, move to a more open location so they can get the light. Covering to prevent to squirrels digging in the pots is essential! Hope this helps.
Hi, me again. So I planted all my alliums about 12 days ago (5 different types), but some have already started to break the surface, I think it's the ampeloprasum, is this right? And if not, is there anything I can do about it? Any help on this would be great, Thanks alot.
@susanhill3309 That's perfectly normal, some varieties will start to grow quite quickly, especially A. sphaerocephalon, but will slow down as we get into colder weather. Just leave them to it.
Phew 🫡, thanks so much for that, I was a little surprised, to say the least 😂
@susanhill3309 You're welcome 😊
Thanks very much for this. It's very helpful. Mine is an older plant and quite woody and leggy. There are green shoots low down on the woody stems. When they're woody, is the approach the same as you've shown in the video? Thanks very much.
You're welcome. Yes, so long as you cut above where you can see new shoots, the plant will regrow from there. Hope this helps.
You mention that you sow the seeds in compost? Do you mean seed raising mix?
We're using multipurpose compost. A seed raising mix will also do the job perfectly.
Are you pruning in April? And if necessary may I prune it in December?
Yes, we prune when we see the new growth emerging in the spring. It's best to prune in spring unless you live in a warmer part of the country as Pruning in winter can make the plant susceptible to frost damage.
Wonderful sharing here all the best enjoy the weekend thumbs up 👉🏻👉🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤗
Many thanks, you too 😀👍
Thank you so much for the information, much appreciated

She looks like she is really enjoying it
She has started asking to go out now, she loves it 😊🐈
SO much color still! Wow, guys! Absolutely beautiful :)
Thanks guys, we're enjoying every day while it lasts (when it's not raining!!) 😁
My Iris bulbs are already popping up. They are outside in gritty compost and a layer of grit on top. How can I save them before they start pushing up more and then the frosts come! Help any advice would be most helpful
If you're referring to iris reticulata, don't worry, they are very hardy and the frost won't do them any harm. They will regulate their growing and slow down when it gets colder. The main thing with these it to make sure they don't get too wet as they will rot if they get waterlogged.
@@MadAboutGardening aww thanks again for your answer... X
You're welcome 😊
Hello, thank you for the inspiration. Would you recommend covering tulip pots over winter to protect from getting water logged? I can't add Autumn interest to all as I've got about 12 pots to fill and spent my budget on bulbs!
You're very welcome. You might want to cover them or put them under somewhere like a potting bench if you are not adding grit to your compost mix to prevent them from getting overly wet. You will have a great display with 12 pots of tulips!
@MadAboutGardening Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and for the suggestions. I just need my beautiful dahlias to die off, then I can start with the bulbs. Have a lovely weekend!
@jobybean4754 You're welcome, happy bulb planting 😊
Very nice, 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you 😊 👍
Hi. Is there a way to message a question to you without intruding on a video? For some reason I can't find a way to enter a search of past videos 😢.
www.youtube.com/@MadAboutGardening
Hi, the only way on here is through the videos but that's okay. There isn't a search facility to find past videos from the channel but we have tried to create playlists with specific video categories to make it easier. If there's something you're looking for, let us know and if we have a past video we can send you the link.
@@MadAboutGardening thank you! I'm looking for guidance on what to do for wintering my dahlias that have been grown in pots. They're still flowering beautifully at the moment 😍 so there's no rush. I'd like to be able to keep them outdoors if there's a way to do so. I'm on the South coast where we get very little snow and temps probably warmer than where you are. I don't have a greenhouse or summer house and very little garage space. Thanks in advance!
@patriceedwards5584 Growing them in pots can be more difficult than in the ground when it comes to overwintering them because they are more likely to get frozen than deep underground. However if you can give them some shelter from the worst of the weather and keep them dryish they should come through okay. When they get their first frost and have turned black, cut them back to around 3-4 inches and place somewhere sheltered like close to the house. I'd put a thick layer of compost or straw over the top of the pots and then lay the pots on their side to avoid them getting wet. The two main things to kill them are getting frozen and getting wet through the winter. Luckily your location should provide higher temperatures than more northerly places. If they are very precious and you would be upset if you lost them, my advice is to clear a little space in the garage and that way they are much more likely to survive left in there until the spring. Hope this helps.
@@MadAboutGardening Very helpful. Thank you loads for taking the time to help. It's greatly appreciated.
That's looking lovely already. Can't believe where this year has gone and here we are again planting Spring bulbs. Doesn't your Rudbeckia look nice in the background where you are filming? I always think it's such a cheery plant and any colour at this time of the year is welcome. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who wants to buy all the plants in the garden centre. It's so tempting isn't it?
Thanks Wendy. It doesn't seem like a year ago since we were planting bulbs but it soon comes around! The rudbeckia is so uplifting, even on a dull day, it really lifts our spirits. It's so tempting when we see so many plants to buy, I can't even go to the supermarket without checking out the plants for sale! Unfortunately if you don't get them when they first arrive, many are left to dry out and then look half dead. It's such a waste. Hope you have a good weekend, take care xxx
I've done 2 tubs, 1 with alliums and other with Narcissus but not thought about top coverage at this moment. Tulips will be planted next month. I'm sure this will be looking and smelling wonderful when the time comes, Thank you 🌼😀👍
We haven't planted any alliums this year, just sticking to tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. We like to add plants on the top so that we have something to look at before the bulbs come up. It also deters the squirrels (for the most part) from digging the bulbs up too! We can't wait for all that scent in the spring. Take care Richy 😀 👍
@@MadAboutGardening There are only 2 Alliums in the pot, white, up to 1metre tall I think. Not sure where I put the packet right now but I did label them 🤔 I'll choose some plants to fill when I decide where I want the pot to stay, take care 😀👍
@martianleaderrichy1520 White Alliums are nice, although we haven't grown any white before, we love to see them when we're visiting gardens. Take care 😀 👍

Cute! Hope Honey likes the flowers.
Thanks, she did and she even got to smell her rose called 'Sweet Honey' 🐈😊
Thanks for the tour of your beautiful garden. You've still got loads of colour haven't you? I really like the Cosmos Double Click Cranberries. I've got to grow that next year. I follow a lady on Apple Pea Fernsea channel and she has it in her garden and said the bees have loved it this year. I was like you, thinking the Cosmos would never get going but it's doing so well in my garden now. Everything else is winding down unlike your plants which are looking amazing. Surprised to see that you still have Zinnias. Mine were knocked out by the colder temperatures we've been having so I ripped them out a couple of weeks ago. Although we've had some lovely weather lately my back grass is absolutely water logged, just like it was in the Spring so I don't think it'll get another cut this year. The front garden is a lot better so that had a cut last week. Hope you're both okay. xxx
You're welcome Wendy. We've been enjoying the garden as much as we can around work and the wet weather. The Cosmos 'Double Click Cranberries' took a while to get going and it probably would have been better in the garden as it's quite tall, but the flowers are lovely and last a long time in a vase. The Zininas are no longer however after a few nights of low temperatures since making this video! The heads went all mushy so we couldn't even get any seed. Hopefully we have some saved in the packet as this one was really nice. Our grass is the same, the first patch is always wetter than the one beyond the rockery. When it rains heavy it turns into a shallow pool! Hope you're having a good week so far. Take care xxx
She is our little angel x 🐈 🧡
So lovely 😊😊
Thanks, she really enjoyed it and so did we showing her the garden. 🐈😊
@@MadAboutGardening bless her♥️
Your garden is so beautiful. I love all the brilliant colors that look so good with early autumn. Thanks for sharing your beautiful garden with us.
Thanks so much James, it's still very colourful at the moment and we're making the most of it while it lasts. We had a few nice warm days last week so it was nice to be outside.
Still plenty of colour flowing through your garden right now, looks wonderful but frost snaps approaching soon, I've already had a couple of frosts up here. Grasses, I still can't convince my father (78yr) that there is more to grasses than just a lawn 😒 I had a strawberry a few days ago like that, looked ripe until I touched it and tossed it away too! Your passion and enthusiasm for the garden shines through, thank you both of you! Enjoy your weekend and I hope the weather is kind, Richy 😀👍
Thanks Richy, we're enjoying it at every opportunity when the weather is okay. It took a while for me to catch on to the beauty of grasses but I love them now. As you know, stipa tennuissima is my favourite 👍 We've had some cold nights but no frost so far 🤞Thanks for your support Richy, enjoy your weekend 😀
@@MadAboutGardening Thanks. I have multiple Miscanthus sinensis now, 1 x Flamingo, 2 x Ferner Osten and 3 x Kleine Silberspinne. 1 x Stipa tennuissima(many seedling!) 3 x Carex 'Frosted curls', 1 x Uncinia Rubra 'Everflame', 1 x Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron' and 1 x Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Black Dragon'/'Niger' which I split into 4 as it had 3 small plantlets in the tub 😁 Frost, not had any yet but had some on my car window, tonight is supposed to be 2C but feels like -2C so I've covered my 4 x 4ft tall Salvias up with an XXL 2.4m x 2m frost protecting zipped jacket tonight after work. Only for 2 nights as it'll be warmer again. I took photo's but not uploaded yet. They're too good to lose this early as loads of blooms. I have no problem supporting the channel as it's my go-to for gardening, suits my yard fine so thank you to you both and enjoy the rest of the weekend, Richy 🌼😀👍 P.S I've just noticed you have over 5K subs now, congratulations! 🍺😀🙌
@martianleaderrichy1520 That's quite a lot of grasses! We love Miscanthus too. You will already know we have the carex Frosted Curls but we also have Imperata Red Baron in the border with Ben's tree. We always overlook it for some reason in the tours but we should mention it as its a great grass. We're not a fan of the Ophiopogon grasses, the ones we've seen always look a bit scappy, but can see the appeal. We had a busy weekend with chores so didn't get out much in the garden. It's quite mild this week here but rain has come today. We are delighted to get to the 5K milestone, thanks 😊. Hope you're having a good week. Let us know when you've uploaded more photos. Take care 😀👍
@@MadAboutGardening I did notice you skipped past the Red Baron but I chose not to mention it like I did with the Echinops ritro V the other month 😜 Mine is in the planter above bins but still in it's pot and I'll probably move it to somewhere with longer sunshine hours. It seems to be doing ok but I want more Liatris in there, add white to the current Purple and Kobold 😀The Ophiopogon, I bought it because it was 1/2 price, small in height and it had berries on and apparently has tiny white flowers prior so, for £5 I now have 4 👍 Day 2 of 3 off here and similar, chores taking my time from the plants, car MOT etc. I need to remove that cover from my salvias too, hope the 3 nights of frost didn't get them. I'll create a new section 'Over wintering' or 'Frost protection', summit like that and upload them. Wish I was retired as I have so many things to do but little time, especially the website! Maybe I should make another dedicated to gardening 🤔 Just gave myself another headache 🤣 Take care and stay safe, going to watch the new vlog now, thank you 😀👍
@martianleaderrichy1520 We'll have to make sure we don't overlook it in November's tour. It was planted ages ago and split into 3 plants prior to going in. They should get taller and make more of an impact but we thought it would look nice near the dark leaved Sedum. Good price for the Ophiopogon and even better when you get 4 out of the 1 👍. We used to look after a garden where there was a patch of this grass and it always looked scruffy which is why we don't like it much. I've seen it in container displays though and it makes a striking contrast to other plants. We have a week like that coming up with chores such as the mot etc. More time to do garden stuff would be great but even when we did it for a living, we still didn't have much time to work on our own garden. At the time though we enjoyed spending other people's cash buying plants and creating borders. It's funny how life changes direction but we're glad we have this channel and all the wonderful, like-minded people we can chat to like yourself 😁. Hope you got what you needed to on your time off today. Take care 😀 👍
Really gorgeous, I can't believe you've still got all that colour in your garden. Love it!
Thanks! We like to grow plants that flower into the autumn as it really lifts our moods as the weather starts to get dismal. Asters are rudbeckia are the stars of autumn!
I planted a rudbeckia last month and the slugs have eaten it 😮
That's a shame, it was touch and go with ours, and we still had to buy some more to make up for what we lost. The variety we grow is usually OK as the leaves are furry but this year has been awful! Better luck next year.
Love Rudbeckia! Yours looks great! I just got Rudbeckia Early Bird Gold to boost my October colour next year. I bought it at Winston Churchill's house (Chartwell) funnily enough. I already have R. Herbstsonne and R. Anthony Waterer!
That's amazing, I bet the visit to Churchill's house was memorable. We have grown R. Herbstonne before but don't know of the others. You can't beat the long lasting sunshine yellow flowers to lift the garden 👍
I love the vibrant colors too. thanks for the tour guys!
You're welcome, you can't beat the vibrant colours can you! Thanks for watching 👍
Another brilliant tour, so many vibrant colours 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks so much, it's bringing us lots of joy 😊 👍
Plss where can i buy seeds worldwide shipping?! 🙏😭
Try Plant World Seeds online, it looks like these have them for worldwide shipping 👍😀
Thank you for your video. I am. About to seed sweet peas. Once I put them in a greenhouse ( my neighbours) for the rest of the winter, how often do I nerd to water them please? Thanks
You're welcome. Just keep a check on them and make sure they don't dry out. It's difficult to say how often to water as it will depend on the weather. We can sometimes get mild sunny days through the winter and the greenhouse can get quite warm. Hope this helps.
Okay, thank you so we still water them on a regular basis as and when rather than put them in a greenhouse and forget about them to do their own thing! Since they already grow very quickly I think that's what I was trying to find out.
@6Pachamama Yeah, don't forget about them all together, just water enough to keep them ticking over 👍
@@MadAboutGardening Thank you.
My crocosmia lucifer plant is gorgeous and is a beautiful addition to the area around our lamp post in the front yard. I'm no expert when it comes to this plant, but even I can see it needs thinning. Your video and instructions are helpful and easily understood. I'd like to know which season is best to do this? If it's fall should they be replanted immediately after separation or dried and replanted in the Spring? Thanks for your great video. I'm excited to get started.
Now in the autumn is a good time to divide crocosmia. Replant straight away after splitting. You'll get new growth emerging in the spring followed by flowers in summer. Thanks so much for your kind comments and happy gardening!
Why grit? 🤔
It's just acts as a covering for the seeds. I like to cover seeds with either grit or vermiculite. Both prevent the top of the seed tray from having that hard top layer that occurs with compost.
@@MadAboutGardening many thanks 🤩
This channel is so cozy! ❤️
Thank you 😊
I wish to make my front garden facing west full to blooms in Sept next year, could you advise what can I sow now. Its tight space added anemonie. In Yorkshire UK
That's quite a nice position as you'll be getting the afternoon sun. Flower seeds to be sowing now include Cornflowers, calendula, sweet peas (if you have something to climb them up) and poppies. Take a look at our video th-cam.com/video/4aNed6jULbo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=q-oQa-8iKbAImeLl which show 4 seeds we recommend for October sowing. These will be flowering in September and before. There will also be lots of perennials that can be sown in the winter months that will germinate in the spring too. Hope this helps.
Great advice. I like the way you care for all the creepy crawlies. I've definitely seen a decrease in the number of butterflies and bees this year. Don't know if you saw Gardeners' World last night but they had an interesting bit about plants changing colour when they've been pollinated. Beautiful day again today so I hope you've both been able to get out and about. I've just come in from planting Allium bulbs. I order all these bulbs but forget I have to plant them! Have a wonderful weekend and take care. xxx
We don't like to hurt anything, even the 'pests' are part of the wider cycle. We have seen lots of bees and wasps, but not many butterflies as you say. Even the Buddleja hasn't attracted that many that we've noticed when we've been outside. Yes, I did see that about the changing colour when pollinated, it's fascinating! We've have been spoilt this week with the lovely warm days and yesterday was lovely too so we made the most of it and got some filming done. Rain here though this morning so what we had planned today will have to wait! It soon comes around to bulb planting season doesn't it? We still have ours to plant but our best pots still have plants flowering in them so we're giving it a little longer. Have a great day Wendy, take care xxxx
I was tempted to cut back in Late Autumn, but now Im thinking of leaving it until March. I love all the new growth appearing in Spring. Cant wait to see everything starting up again! Im surprised just how much colour there still is in the garden mid October.
It's such a shame if you cut back now because of all the interest you can enjoy over the winter and all of the habitats you'll be providing for insects. We love the spring too when we have it all to look forward to. There are some great plants that flower right through into October and we also have the changes in foliage to enjoy. Such a great month!
