Mad About Gardening
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 5 พ.ค. 2020
Welcome to our channel. We are literally mad about gardening and plants, particularly hardy perennials. We have a keen interest in naturalistic planting and plant propagation. We are against using chemicals and try to make our space as biodiverse as possible. Our passion comes from a genuine love of plants that we've had since childhood.
Join us in our UK Cheshire garden, where we'll be sharing our tips, successes and failures. With many years experience, both professionally and through our own gardens, we hope to share our love of plants with as many people as possible.
Over the years we have had many wonderful opportunities including creating some stunning planting schemes for our clients, planting show gardens at RHS Chatsworth and Tatton Flower Shows, volunteering at RHS Bridgewater Garden and meeting many knowledgeable plants people and garden designers.

2024 Garden Recap - A Year In Our Garden | Cottage Garden Plants Through The Year
In this video you can see the journey of our cottage garden through the year and the many plants and flowers we grow. Gardens are ever changing and no two years are exactly the same.
In 2024 we had our biggest problem with slugs and many plants that are usually unaffected, were obliterated as soon as they began to regrow in the spring. This created a lot of gaps in our borders which we had to fill with new plants as the season progressed.
We created a new border to the side of the summerhouse filled with many part shade loving plants. It was also the first year that we grew tomatoes in the raised vegetable bed along with different varieties of Calendula. This worked really well and is something we will be doing again this year. We also grew the most number of sweet peas in the garden so far, which produced cut flowers for the house for months on end.
As we reflect on the previous year, we look forward to the coming year with eagerness and anticipation. Whatever it brings, it will be magical!

When should I start sowing them? Now in Januari, but indoors?
You can begin sowing indoors from January or outside in the spring 👍
Thank you! I have all three but have been using them incorrectly. I appreciate your video!
You're welcome. It can be confusing to know which is best for which purpose so glad to have helped.
THANK YOU. What a GREAT video!! LOVED IT. 10/10. EXCELLENT! 1. Are the old corns any good?? Can one replant them? (I saw a video where someone said you can break the corns off and then replant every single corn. True/false?)) 2. When you replant the plants, do you 'cut them down to size at all', or do you just replant the whole full-length plant? 3. Can they be replanted any season? 4. Is there a life expectancy for the Crocosmia? THANK YOU again sir. GREATLY APPRECIATED. Greetings from 'OZ'. (Australia)
That's fun
Thank you, Very useful information as i have just bought 2 lucifer as they look so beautiful ❤
You're welcome, glad you found it useful. We love Lucifer too. We collected and sowed the seeds of Lucifer last autumn and now have lots of seedlings. Thanks again 💚😊
Absolutely beautiful. Thoroughly enjoyed this and given me such inspiration! Wonderful music too.
Thanks so much, we love to use classical music as it just seems to go perfectly with the beauty of plants.
I really can´t wait any longer 🌻🦋🐝🪲🐞🐦😎🌞
I know, winter to way too long! 😀
WHAT A YEAR! Thanks for putting all of this together for us, guys! My favorite... if I had to pick!.. would be that corner at 10:38. It looks so hyggeligt as we say in Denmark :)
Cheers guys, we should make space in that corner this year for a chair so we can really enjoy it! Take care 😊
What a beautiful video. Made my day. It is so dreary here right now that seeing your bright garden cheered me up. Love those sweet peas! 🍃
Thanks Sue, it's good to know seeing the flowers has cheered you up. We long for the warmer days to come. The snow has only just melted here! It will be soon time to be sowing this years sweet peas 😀
Beautiful array of flowers
Thanks so much 😀
Thank you for a lovely video. Hope you both had a fab xmas and new year and yes I'm excited to get gardening again too! This year I'm trying out some winter sowing for the first time 💚🌼
You're welcome! We had a lovely Christmas and New year thanks. Hope you did too. Glad you're trying some winter sowing, there's lots of plants that require this treatment and when you see the little seedlings appear in spring, it's a great feeling of achievement 😀 Take care 💚😊
What a lovely year, I would like to know about what kinds of trees you have in your garden, as I would like suggestions for my own small garden please.
Thanks so much. The only tree we have at the moment are the Prunus nigra and the Magnolia stellata. Columnar varieties that have a smaller spread are good choices for small gardens as are weeping varieties. Fruit trees are good too because you can select the rootstock size to fit any size garden. Hope this helps 😀
I propagated some geraniums from my parents garden and they rooted very well. Ive tried to do more but they just keep dying. You need at least one leaf node under the soil for it to root right?I dont know what im doing wrong
Yes, at least one node. If your first set for your parents worked, your technique sounds good. Sometimes there seems to be no explaination for failure but keep persevering. Using hormone rooting powder also increases the chances.
@@MadAboutGardening thank you
Beautiful! This is the stuff that keeps us going in the cold winter, lol. So looking forward to spring!
@HoosierDaddy_ Thanks, we're working on a longer video of the past year so keep posted. We're the same, seeing warmer weather and all the plants flowering helps us too during these freezing times !
Is the compost, potting compost or multi purpose compost?
@bartoni79 We use multi purpose compost which has some nutrients already in it to give the plants a good start.

Thanks for the tutorial! I really love stipas but heard that they can be invasive. What do you do to prevent them from getting everywhere?
Youre welcome. They do self seed a lot and unless you remove the flower stems when the seeds are dropping, the only thing is to weed out the seedlings you don't want. We give a lot away to family and people we know. Don't let it put you off as they are lovely grasses.
Nice sir 🌹
Sorry, too fast. I couldn't really see anything.
We'll be doing a longer recap video soon 👍
A good reminder of our gardening resolutions, thank you so much.
They grow if you stick the cutting directly in the soil
Thank you, I am growing Snapdragons for the first time and I am so happy to hear they are resistant to slugs!
You're welcome, yes you'll be perfectly safe with snapdragons 👍
My White Soul alpine strawberries( 10 month old plants) need dividing as they are getting pot bound. This video was just what I needed to get me growing the offsets of my white alpines. Thanks for the info!
So glad the video was useful for you. We've never grown the white alpine strawberries before, maybe something to try next year. Thanks for watching.
Charming. Thank you.
@@janadvorakova3646 Thanks for watching.
Can you do them in the wild?
You sure can 👍
Very enjoyable. I have some liatris seeds that I got from an estate sale. It has year 2010 . Im going to try this method. I live in 9B North Florida, right now its 65, during the day, and 39, at nite. Then next week it will be 80 during the day, welcome to Florida winters. I have nothing to lose since I bought 2 shoeboxes full of seeds for 1.00. 😅
Definitely, give them a go. You got a bargain with all that seed and hopefully you'll get germination 🤞. Thanks for watching and greetings from the rainy UK 😀
Really helpful, thank you
Thanks for watching, glad you found it useful 😀
Was vibing with the serene energy of the video as I cleaned my kitchen and did dishes when I misheard - could’ve sworn you said to cut your farts in the garden. 😂😂😂 Thanks for the laughs.
I was so lit and had to Google if moths serve a purpose and now I’m here lol 🤙🏽
They are so valuable to our garden and it's a shame they are not more widely known about. 👍
Still so much color... just 6 days ago! Hope the snow didn't take it all away by now :)
Unfortunately the cold has taken the last of the colour but what's left can be left for the insects and birds to enjoy now. Hope you guys are well. 😊💚
Great video Paul. There's a lovely lady called Annette on Cottoverdi channel and she has loads of gorgeous Dahlias. They really are beautiful. I was thinking how much work and effort she puts in at the start and the end of the season. I only have a few as I lost a lot of mine to the wet weather as I left them in situ. They'd always come through but last Winter and this Spring were really wet and everything rotted. A couple that I had in pots survived. Hope you and Andrew are both okay. Sorry that I'm late watching this video. Don't know where the time goes. xxx
Thanks Wendy. It's quite a job to do the few dahlias we have so it must be a very long process to put lots of dahlias 'to bed' over winter. They are worth it though! I'm also trying to overwinter some left in pots in the summer house and see if they come through. We had an especially wet winter and spring last year, and I think many people lost their dahlias too. Such a shame as you get attached to them, well I do! We're both okay thanks, just a cold we both have that seems to lingering. Hope you're well too. Take care xxxxx
I did mine last week😊
Fantastic! 👍😁
Great video, thanks so much for all the information, so helpful ❤. I'll definitely be storing my dahlias ❤
You're welcome, yes please store them. You'll save on having to buy new ones next year and they get bigger and better over time.
@MadAboutGardening amazing thank you.. that's good to know 💖
Nice video, greetings from Los Angeles
Thanks Timothy, greetings from the cold and frosty UK! ❄️❄️
A most helpful video.I relish my white alpine strawberries as they are constantly yielding nice, small berries except for a few months of hot summer weather. Birds and bugs ignore them and partial shade in the hot weather keeps the plants happy and healthy. Thanks again!
You're very welcome, we've never tried the white alpine strawberries so will have to give them a go. If they are as lovely as the red, they will be great.
Which one would be better for coleus plant when you have your plant indoors during the winter. Love you channel.
I would use a mix with added perlite for good aeration and drainage. Coleus like moist but free draining soil. Thanks for watching and your kind words.
Excellent presentation!! So glad I watched this before deciding on pots and combinations. This was such a gift of knowledge. Thank you. Eugene, Oregon USA
Thanks so much Eugene, glad the video helped you with your pot displays. Happy gardening!
Can I buy a seedling Crocosmia Lucifer now, in a 9 cm pot, and keep it in the house until spring? I live in zone 7b.
If you did get a seedling, I'd put it somewhere like a cold frame over winter or a sheltered spot outdoors. It may be too warm in the house for it. Hope this helps.
@MadAboutGardening thank you.
Thanks
Thanks so much! Much appreciated 🙏 ☺️
Sorry if I missed it in the video, but can you leave root cuttings outside over winter? Like doing it now in november and letting it sit in a container over winter and expect growth in spring? I live in Sweden, USDA zone 6b.
@hannablom5803 Yes, you can take root cuttings now and over the winter and leave them outside, just make sure they don't get too wet as they are prone to rotting.
@ thanks for answering, and for such good content of your videos!
@hannablom5803 You're welcome, thanks for your support 😊
Paul, would it be necessary to lift the Darwen tulips after floweing or can they be left in situ ? Also, I've been gifted some perennial clumps like peonies and phlox - can I still plant them now in November? And, what is the watering regime for seedlings placed in the plastic greenhouse now - how often would they need watering during winter. Just shows how much you pack into your videos 🤣🤣
Yes, the Darwin tulips can be left in situ as they should perform well for subsequent years. You can continue to plant your perennials and just ensure your seedlings don't dry out throughout the remaining autumn and winter. Keep a check on them weekly and more frequent if the temperature is mild. Lots to keep you busy during this month! Happy gardening 😊
@@MadAboutGardening Yes, thank you - you are keeping me busy! 🙂
