BMW R1150 Won't start! Starter motor replacement on my 1150 GS.
My BMW R1150 GS would not start off the button and the starter motor would struggle to turn the engine over. Sometimes it was fine but other times it would struggle to the point that it would trigger the relay to click and the clock to reset. It always run off a bump start so figured it wasn't anything dodgy.
To just make sure it wasn't the battery or generator, I put a charger on overnight and tried starting the next day.... I knew this wasn't the issue but just wanted to rule it out. As you saw, the starter motor was still struggling to turn over.
I tried to clean the starter motor out but it made no difference so ordered a new starter motor and fitted it :-).

Hi Mal, so the starter motor, and yes it is a component that require some attention. You can strip down it completely and refurbish. I have done this to mine. He can fail completely due an internal metal plate that keep separated the internal planetary gear (full of grase) and the coils of the rotor. If the plate detatch from it's place can cause a short circuit in the coils, and this can happen randomly, sometimes it works fine sometimes it seems like a weak battery. Second way to fail is the permantent magnet that could detach from the case and the consequence is a weak torque on the shaft. Third scenario brushes worn out. Than you can experience the case of a faulty solenoid, that external cylinder with the faston attached, in this case no starter at all, or a failure of the mechanism actuated by the solenoid, in this case the gear will not engage with the teeth of the engine flyweel and the starter turn freely. Than could fail the internal power switch (bottom side of the solenoid) actuated by the solenoid again, this is the power switch that connect the positive from the battery to the internal coils of the motor via brushes, in this case no starter. Ther is a chance that all is ok but the starter turn slowly, this is the case of lack of grease in the internal gear and presence of brushes/clutch dust that jam the shaft. But the worst case is a jammed power switch in on position (the power switch actuated by the solenoid) in this case you cannot stop it until you are fast enough to disconnect the positve cable on the starter motor, and if you are not fast, the starter can set the entire motorcycle on fire. This cable come direct from battery and you have to be carefull in case you replace the starter, for safety reason you have to disconnect the battery. On the engine case ther is a pin that engages with the starter motor case (to keep it in the right position) and are good practics to grease it or it can seize and broke down during the next starter removal. Hope you are not bored at this time, it's amazing how much things are just on the starter motor... Ciao ;)

Worthwhile upgrade. Did mine while rebuilding my GS owned by me for 24+ years. Put a Techlusion R259 tuning box on way back in about 2006 and been on the bike ever since to help with the surging issue many of these suffered with. Didn't refit the tuning box when re-building (I just forgot!!) and only realised I didn't put it back on when I came across it in a box of bits. Hadn't noticed any surging or rough idle and in fact she's running very sweet. So I guess the new injectors have made a difference.

Completely agree, definitely worthwhile and I’ve noticed the difference they make, it’s now smooth and a bit more spritely 😄. Ah, I hadn’t heard of the tuning box before, but great to know you feel the difference with the new injectors as well…. Especially after not refitting the tuning box!

You’re better off posting this query in forums for an answer rather than TH-cam comments. Check fuse 3, seems to be a common issue with the clock. Other than that, it could be a deeper issue within the components of the clock.

@@TheNielsAlmelo you have a nice bike there, I like the look of the TDM and have always been a fan of Yamaha motorcycles. I think what I like about the boxer engine the most is that I can stretch my legs out and rest them on the protection bars so you’ll probably enjoy that too 😄. You’ve made me curious as well 😄. I installed the R1200 injectors last year so I’m hoping that will make it a little more fuel efficient as it certainly makes it ride a bit smoother.

I'll have you know, Mal, my Mother's maiden name was Gubbins!!! 😱😱😱 Jokes aside, I thought this was an improvement on the last one, because you cut the disassembly/assembly shots shorter. It's not necessary for us to see you completely unscrew/screw something, etc, once you've establised what you're doing. One thing that you might want to consider: disable the autofocus on your camera, so that it's not seeking the focus spot when you're moving around.

Hi Derek. I use the Trail Riders Fellowship’s ‘trail wise 2 app’ to find the legal byways which is much easier than trying to find them on an OS Map. Sadly, there are not many of the byways about these days so I have to either pay to ride at an organised event, and on some rare occasions I have access to private land but, they are very rare occasions and only for a short amount of time. Hopefully these links can help. www.trailwise2.co.uk TET GPX files transeurotrail.org/united-kingdom/#4.76/52.953/-2.194

While I wouldn't tackle restoring the wheels myself (because I have no idea what I'm doing, have no specials tools or any knowledge on how to restore them and I'm a clumsy forgetful fool), you don't need to go to the main stealer in order to have those wheels properly restored. I have found an independent company near Düsseldorf that will disassemble the wheel, blast the hub and the rim and powder coat it. The spokes will be replaced by stainless ones that won't rust. It's not cheap, around €1200 for the two wheels, but if you want to keep this bike for the long term, it's well worth it. And I'm sure you don't have to look as far as Germany, I'm sure you can find someone where you live as well. I'm guessing by the rain and the accent that is the UK. 😄

Hi! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it. I certainly am from the UK, I live in Wales so plenty of rain here 😄. Since this video was released someone posted about a guy here in the UK that can true the wheels and also do full refurbishment too so the comment is pinned for info, but I’m really grateful for you sharing about the company in Düsseldorf as there are people from Germany who comment from time to time and and would benefit from the information.

Really pleased you have discovered the glory of the 1150GS 🎉. I purchased by GS in August 1999 for a trip to Spain then North Africa, road, tracks, desert, mountains it handled it all with no fuss and it STILL does! Of all the bikes I have owned I still have the GS! Just me the one owner and nearly 25 years of great adventures together. Low tech, no cruise control, no Apple carplay, just pure motorcycling at its rawest man and machine. I have modern, current bikes, but with the GS there is a utilitarian connection thats unique. Excellent video, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it. It’s been a great little journey with this bike, and I feel like I know it more than bikes I’ve had for longer. Like you say, the simplicity of them is what makes them more enjoyable as it can just be started and ridden with no fussing about. It’s been great having people like yourself, sharing experiences and their passion for them too, it’s a really great community to be a part of and I look forward to playing with it some more this year. I’m taking it to do the Scottish North Coast 500 next month so am really looking forward to enjoying the miles ahead.
