BMW R1150 GS Pannier rail repair and new saddlebag soft luggage | Rhinowalk waterproof saddle bag

- I replace the OEM Oilhead BMW R1150 GS Luggage rail, fit the OEM BMW panniers and fit some Rhinowalk waterproof motorcycle saddle bags that I bought as a long term test (Will review in a future video).
Backstory: I've bought it as a project motorcycle so that I could start adventure motorcycle riding and become an Adventure Bike Rider, bringing another element to this channel. I need to mention I bought it off the internet without seeing it for £2295 and this was the cheapest at the time and that's because It had no service history with it, so this is all a new experience and an exciting one at the same time.

Good choice, going for the soft luggage, and a decent price too. I tried hard luggage on my KTM 990 adv but soon reverted to soft luggage, it's far more compact when travelling light. I'm so glad you're continuing the series on your 1150 GS, I've recently picked up up my own project 1150 GS and your videos have come in very handy as I get my hands dirty with a bit of tinkering.

Yes, I’m definitely continuing with it, I’ve really enjoyed learning about the bike and all the filming side of things so it will continue, I’m just up against a few issues (nothing bad, just time consuming) at the moment so I’m not able to push the videos out as much as I’d like which is frustrating, but I’ll get there 😄.

@@MALVSMACHINE Hi Mal, Yes, the 990 adv is a fantastic bike. I made a crazy decision to sell it in lockdown, which i still regret. The 1150 I've bought is an 04 GS adv with 34k. It's in pretty good shape but there a few things to deal with, like 15 year old tyres, worn paralever bearings, worn suspension bushes and it needed a thorough service. The tank's coming off this weekend as I have some new engine bars to fit.

get on the UK ACT trail, just did the wales leg of it on the GS, jeez, it was good going, the bike amazes me more and more! i had a dry bag over the rear tool section, just for the one night, i need a new system too
Yeah they’re incredibly capable aren’t they. I took mine through the Strata Florida with a similar setup; a North Face Duffle bag over back end. Will be doing more through wales over the next few months so will look in to the UK ACT trail 👌🏻.

Looks good! BE CAREFUL of the little red lock tabs on the hard panniers … they can be easily snapped and then cannot lock the panniers …. much like the M6, don’t ask me how I know! 😂

Enjoying your series on the 1150 GS. Currently selling my bike to purchace a bike that can eat miles after miles but also a bit of green laning. Maybe even a trip to Iceland.
I am going back and forth between a 1150 GS and a Honda Varadero 1000. They both have strengths and weaknesses.
The GS would be more capable, better balanced and lighter but harder to get at a decent deal, seems to need more maintenance.
The Honda is less offroad capable, a big girl but easy to find and a real tank, the "ride and forget" type of bike.

Ah man, that’s quite the predicament ay! Two great bikes and both extremely capable so it’s a hard choice to say the least. Either way, whatever you choose will be enjoyable, especially if you’re thinking of going to Iceland!! Thats one place I’d like to get out to 👌🏻
@@MALVSMACHINE My first memory of the 1150 GS was Ewan McGregor's Long Way Round! Whoever at BMW had the genious idea of giving them bikes must have gotten a raise! 🤣
At The moment I am leaning towards the Honda, I've had two and they are just built like tanks mechanically. You hardly find videos of them breaking down. A german has 700000kms on his! The GS would handle better a beating off road though.
Maybe I should green lane a bit a the big girl and learn off road on a smaller bike...
@@zepedrofd I’m the same as you, first time I ever saw a GS was on the Long Way Round 😄, although, I do remember BMW being the second choice after KTM turned them down with the 950 Adventure 😳 so that guy must’ve got fired and the BMW guy got a raise 😂.
I can see the appeal, my cousin used to say ‘don’t ponder, buy a Honda’ when he had his VFR so you’re definitely making a good choice; 700000 km is absolutely incredible 👌🏻.
I came from Road riding to off-road and buying an enduro bike helped me loads so a smaller bike will definitely help you build the skills to help you take the big bike to places most people wouldn’t think it would ride through 😄. You’ll have to keep me updated on what you do 👌🏻

Hi Mal, how good is your exhaust clearance with the soft panniers?
I've got the soft Lomo waterproof panniers & I had to design & make a bracket each side to hold them further away. They've still slightly singed.
I'm thinking of replacing the original exhaust with a cooler running race can.

At the moment I noticed the clearance isn’t too good but I’ve not done anymore than what is in the video.
I bought the Rhinowalk exhaust guard to fit and adjust when I do fill the bags up, but can’t give you a proper answer just yet sorry mate.

Mine has a Remus exhaust on it but it’s probably as big as the original😄. I’ve only recently noticed the previous owner got rid of the cat so it has a Y pipe to the exhaust which makes it backfire from time to time, which sometimes is funny, but other times is annoying 😄
@@MALVSMACHINE the brackets I've made go diagonally from the rear foot pegs to the rear of the pannier brackets (the same brackets as yours). The only time I have an issue is when they're empty. Maybe the heat shield is all I need but I do like the sound of a good can.

Hi mal, I notice you have hand guards on the gs, I have the BMW r1100gs and can't seem to find any hand guards to fit, do you know what make the one's on your bike are?, thanks rob
Hi Rob, the hand guards on mine are the OEM Guards that were standard on the 1150. If you have a look on motorworks.co.uk you can search by model and see what options are available for your model; I think Barkbuster will have an option that may fit, but I don’t know much about the R1100GS ….. I do hope to have one in the garage one day though 😄.
