Crankbrothers M20 Cycling Multi-tool Review
Today I am reviewing my Crankbrothers M20 Multi-tool . This cycling focused multi-tool has accompanied me on my rides of the GDMBR and TransAm in the last couple of years, and I have packed it to come with me again on my next ride, the Tour Aotearoa, which I am starting in January 2025. In my opinion it is the perfect multi-tool for me when on a biking tour, and I will explain why in this video.

Today I am reviewing my Leatherman Micra Multi-Tool. This little multi-tool has accompanied me on all of my long hiking and cycling trips over the last few years, and will be coming with me again on the Tour Aotearoa that I am starting in mid January. This is the perfect little tool for me when on a hiking or biking tour, and I will explain why in this video. Thank you for watching, if you enjo...
Fox Flexair MTB Shorts Review - My Shorts for the GDMBR, TransAm, and Tour Aotearoa
มุมมอง 1K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
Today I am reviewing my Fox Flexair MTB Shorts. I purchased these shorts half way through my ride of the GDMBR in 2023, and they are still going strong around 7000 miles of bike touring later. Columbia Silver Ridge Utility Lite Shirt Review | The Shirt I Wore on the GDMBR and TransAm
มุมมอง 97321 วันที่ผ่านมา
Today I am reviewing my Columbia Silver Ridge Utility Lite Shirts. I have two of these shirts, one I wore for my ride along the GDMBR in 2023, the other I wore for most of my cross-country Trans American ride in 2024. This shirt is advertised more as a hiking shirt, but I found it to be ideal for cycle touring for a variety of reasons, which I outline in this video. Despite all the positives th...
Thermarest NeoAir XLite NXT RW review
มุมมอง 1.1Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Today I am reviewing my Thermarest NeoAir XLite NXT Regular Wide, in what is left of the video after getting the name out I share my experiences of this pad, as well as some stats and facts about it. This sleeping pad was a gamechanger for me, having come to bikepacking from a base of ultralight backpacking gear I had always had a mummy/coffin shaped pad, purely because they are lighter than th...
Flextail Zero Pump Review | The Worlds Smallest Pump for Sleeping Pads
มุมมอง 738หลายเดือนก่อน
Today I am reviewing the Flextail Zero Pump, which comes with the claim that it is the smallest pump for sleeping pads available on the market, a claim which I have not put to the test in this video, but which I can easily believe. This the second Flextail pump I have reviewed on the channel, and in my view this is a definite upgrade on the previous one. Thank you for watching, if you enjoyed t...
Klean Kanteen: Wide-Mouth 40oz Review
มุมมอง 1.2Kหลายเดือนก่อน
In todays video I am reviewing my Klean Kanteen Wide-Mouth bottle. I have used these bottles for my ride of the GDMBR in 2023, and my cross country Trans America ride in 2024. They will also be accompanying me on my ride of the Tour Aotearoa in New Zealand next year, this probably tells you all you need to know about how great I think these bottles are! Thank you for watching, if you enjoyed th...
Soto WindMaster Stove Review
มุมมอง 728หลายเดือนก่อน
A review of my Soto WindMaster Stove. I used this stove on my TransAm ride across America earlier this year, and it worked flawlessly throughout. As with all the reviews on my channel, I try to only give my opinion on things that I have used enough for my opinion to be worthwhile. Thank you for watching, if you enjoyed this video please take a look at some of the others I have on this channel, ...
Sonder Broken Road Pinion Ti Review | The Bike I Used to Ride the GDMBR
มุมมอง 5K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today I am reviewing my Sonder Broken Road Pinion Ti, an expedition mountain bike which I used to ride the GDMBR in 2023, and which I will be riding the Tour Aotearoa in early 2025. The most notable feature of this bike is the Pinion gear box, which puts all the moving parts of the gear system out of harm’s way and gives an almost silent, well-balanced ride. Anyone who watched my videos riding ...

Kona Sutra Review | The Bike I Rode Across America
มุมมอง 9K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today I am reviewing the Kona Sutra (2023), a touring bike from Kona that I used on my TransAm ride earlier this year. Having ridden well over 5,000 miles on this bike I feel I am well placed to give my opinion on how it feels to ride, and how it performs over a long tour. Brooks C17 vs Ergon SMC: Which Is Best for Long Distance Cycle Touring?
มุมมอง 25K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
This review is a little different to the others on this channel. In this video I compare my experience of two of the most popular saddles for long distance cycle touring or bikepacking, the Brooks C17 and the Ergon SMC. From my experience on the GDMBR, and from chatting to people that have done a lot more bike touring than I have, a bad saddle (or a saddle that doesn't suit your needs) is proba...
Flextail Tiny Pump X Review
มุมมอง 1.8K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
In todays video I am reviewing my Flextail Tiny Pump X. As the name suggests this is a tiny little electric pump that is ideal for inflating sleep pads when camping. Inflating my sleeping pad roughly 150 times with a pump sack when completing the Appalachian Trail a few years back became somewhat tedious to say the least, so ahead of riding the GDMBR last year I wanted to find an alternative th...

Mat, has it seen a lot of weather? Does it stretch/leak in heavy rain?
I really enjoyed this review, thanks very much! You have a new subscriber!
I can't tell by looking but do you run tubeless too?
To me it's missing tire levers to be perfect.
Ive got the m17 and its great.
Certain you previously mentioned using Jack the bike rack. If able, I do look forward to your review of that product.
I have the M17, cracking bit of kit and will last a lifetime
A few years ago I got my wife and son a M20 for Christmas. Even if they never use it, I know they have it. That , a Dyna plug , a wolf tooth master link tool and a couple other things should get them back home .
Just paused to check my mnt bike. All 4mm with one larger riser bolt that's probably some SAE size and only Phillips is on the derailleur so I really only need two tools, but that chain break tool looks really good. Can you take off the tools you don't need?
bought one last week for the chain breaker and returned it the next day. chain breaker was next to unusable with the minimal flat piece of metal being your only grip for applying torque. a smaller multitool and compact park chain breaker are staying in my on-ride tool kit
Like that, it's handbag size😊
Hi Mat, I'm looking at buying this bike myself. Can I ask what size you went for? I've heard you say in another video that you're 5'10" which is the same as me, but I have a slightly short inseam for my height. I'm thinking I'm a 52cm in frame size as I've looked at the geometry chart for the bike and it looks similar to my other bike, so any clues you could give to sizing would be very welcome. Bike sizing is a very personal thing but I I'd be interested to hear what you went for none the less 👍 many thanks and keep up the videos, they're great 👍👍
Hi. I went with a 54. It seems to fit me well. I have a 32" inseam and I am '10". I did buy a shorter stem, but that was mainly to give me a more upright riding position, which is what I'm used to coming from Mou tain bikes.
@@matryderreviews thanks for the reply Mat. Much appreciated. Stay safe on the trail there in NZ 👍 BW Mark
Why not a kickstand....?.....I'd never have a bike with out one
I can't find one that fits. The ones I've tried on my mountain bike hit my heel.
People really want those Brooks to be comfortable because they are cool...but they are not for most of us......Terry Liberator Y....for me...bring extra underwear...just throw them away as they get wet...Im not carting wet underware around... 6 pack=$9 Walmart...
Tiny tip as a fellow Aeropress user (great vid by the way), but when you store your press, make sure to push the punger all the way through so it "Pops" out the other end. If the edges of the rubber are trapped inside the main chamber they will lose the ability to keep it super airtight over time. Little tip I implement into my set-up even tho then the plastic filter gasket doesn't screw on, but it will all still fit.
Great tip. 👍
Is the other sike of the bottle opener a p38 can opener?
I'm not sure. I'll check it.
I have a C17 carved and an Ergon ST men, the latter is much more comfortable. I am not wearing padded shorts, just merino underwear.
Thanks Mat. Another excellent review. You inspired me to look for a similar style. I chose the "33,000ft Men's Long Sleeve Shirt Sun Protection Shirt" as it comes in white. It has 2 normal shape breast pockets and is otherwise similar in other ways except it lacks a rear vent. I have not found this a particular problem so far. Enjoy the NZ ride
No locking blade in the U.K.? Interesting
Yes I believe so, I think the law is it cannot lock, and the blade must be under 3 inches. Thank you for commenting 👍
I dont know why you guys tolerate all those silly laws over there@@matryderreviews
I am very new but I tried padded shorts and they are like wearing a wet sponge, I now have a padded rockbros cover over my saddle and wear quick dry shorts with no underwear, the seams in underwear seem to be the problem. I like that the shorts dry quickly which mean your skin stays dry also.
This is basically my experience, as I said in the video the Ergon saddle I use is quite padded, and I definitely have had a better experience having the padding in the seat rather than the shorts. Thank you for commenting 👍
Watching this only after watching your tour videos. As I recall you were plagued with saddle sores for a good bit of the trip? For anything more than a trip to the shops, I'd always wear padded shorts from a decent maker. Easier to swap them around rather than saddles. Just my opinion reflecting my experience of several bum-trouble free month-long trips. All the best.
I think it depends a lot from person to person, I am currently riding in New Zealand with two riders that wear padded shorts and have no issues. On the GDMBR I started with padded shorts and after struggling with saddle sores I was recommended by a seasoned tourer to try without them and things definitely improved for me. To be honest I think really the key for long touring is to just ride a lot and get used to being in a saddle for hours a day. Thank you for commenting.
Do they fit in car holders?
They're a bit too big for mine. They make a narrower one which does.
@@matryderreviews I bought the insulated 32oz hasn’t arrived yet.
Great video. My favourite part is when you said you would be it again because you’re insane.😂 Sums up my shopping habits for expensive camping gear nicely!
Hi Mat, Great review and accomplishment. I'm looking at getting a Sutra and was wondering what size yours was and how tall you are. Kona sizing seems off a little. I will be ordering it online so I won't be able to test ride it first. TIA!
Hi. I'm 5'10" and have a 32" inseam. I went with the 54. It fits me well.
Class of 19 as well. 🤙🏽
Nice review Mat, will definitely consider these shorts, tried various different combinations over the years and I do hate the padded shorts when I’m just touring about. Loving these reviews, keep them up (obviously after your latest adventure) 👍🏻
Hello. Would you mind reviewing your new red headphones. I ride mainly busy ail trails in Ohio with my right earbud in so I can still hear on my left and while it works it's not ideal so I've been looking for alternatives and was wondering if the headphones you have that go in front of rather than in your ear might be better. You seem pretty honest and practical so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks and happy trails.
I'll make a point of doing a review as soon as I can. I have the Shox Openrun bone conduction headphones. So far, I think they're excellent for audio books. The music quality isn't great but good enough. It's also nice to be able to hear what's going on around me, especially on busy roads.
@matryderreviews I know your a busy man so, thanks. Can't wait to see your NZ trip. Cheers!
I had wondered about those. Thnx. Have fun in NZ🍀
Looking forward to following you on your next trip coming up. Looking forward to checking out what click on your fox shorts your on at the end.😊 Thanks Mark from Maryland
I have been riding with Fox gear for many many years and it’s great! My new favourite shorts now are the Elevenpine Men's Uprising XR Shorts. Great review! Cheers. 🍻
People are often surprised when I tell them that I don't ride in padded bike shorts, but I find that just a pair of spandex shorts, like a jammer for swimming is more comfortable.
I have the Fox Flexair pants and love them. Great fit and love the stretch, I’m a bit of a Clydesdale 😂
Check out the "Endura" brand shorts. I do believe they are made in the United Kingdom and last forever
How tall are you?
I am around 5'10.
"I absolutely loved your video! The contents is so engaging and informative. Keep up the great work! "By the way, if you're interested, I specialize in TH-cam SEO. I could help you optimize your videos for better visibility and reach more viewers and subscribers
Good review. My go to shirts now for outdoor activities. Thanks for the review and how you read that font is beyond me. 🤣🤣🤣🤣Take care, Al
i have the kona sutra ltd. i thought i would miss a 2 or 3x but a 10-52 tooth rear cassette covers my needs. the only thing not up to the task are the rims. update the wheels before a large trip and not have to buy a new rear wheel mid trip because your spokes got pulled out of the rim.
Thanks for the review. I wonder, if it's powerful enough to inflate the pad fully? Or do one have to inflate the little rest to get a proper filled pad?
Thank you for commenting. It does inflate fully, it will inflate to the point where you cannot get anymore air in the pad, I personally just like it a little way off full so there is some give when I lay on it.
@@matryderreviews Cheers, mate!
Another great video Mat. Thank you and I look forward to following you progress on your next adventure. I sure hope they have Sour Patch Kids there!
Wide makes a huge difference, for sure. I can't imagine sleeping comfortably on any of the narrow-sized ones.
I started out with the REI Helix, and I really like it. It's wide enough at the top and through the middle, though it does taper slightly sort of from the knees down. Great value for money, IMO, especially when on sale.
It really does, as I said in the video I used the narrow one for all of my hike of the Appalachian Trail, and most of my ride of the GDMBR, and I didn't look forward to going to sleep on it, I could never really get comfortable, and it has made such a difference for me switching to the wider pad.
Have you considered using a reflective cycling vest over your favorite shirt?
I have considered it, I know you can get just reflective sash sort of things which may be the way to go as I feel a vest may restrict airflow too much for me.
I have two of those shirts and I love them!
I have the Black Diamond sun hoodie too, and I love it. Great choice!
Hey Mat, love the shirt !... is it me or is the pinion drive belt now on the left hand side ? 😮 ...I'm sure i saw on your last video it was on right "normal" side. Sorry if I'm talking Bollocks but it's done my head in 🤔😁😅
I think the video may have been flipped for some reason, I can promise you it hasn't moved! Is and always has been on the right. Thank you for commenting 👍
I've been a devotee of these shirts for over 15 years. I first found them on a very hot and humid Florida holiday. As a person who sweats a lot, they are a godsend. The PFG (performance fishing gear) range are available in a range of very bright colours. I have at least 20 of them in long and short sleeve, in every colour from bright pink to jet black. In our family they are known as Magic Shirts, because they never need ironing, and don't show sweat stains in hot weather. The places to look are Columbia outlet stores in the US, where you can get them for under 20 bucks.
Hi Mat. For a few years now I've been using similar shirts for cycling and walking from Decathlon, decent vfm but these Columbia shirts look way more rugged and practical. It comes in "Tall" sizes too which will suit my arm length, both of them, as quite often shirt cuffs come up short when I'm stretched out. Another purchase imminent due to your review channel. Cheers 👍
Update: I've bought two, long sleeved and short sleeved, and they feel great. Cheers.
The ending was classic! Came here for the review…stayed to the end for the entertainment!
Regular t-shirt will start to smell on you within 2 days. This pece of cloth does that within 2 hours. As you get sweaty, you get the sense that this it doesn't breathe on you at all.
Having been hit by a car when I was little " lights&brights" are my norm. Cycling, motorcycling or hiking. I'm not trying to be stealth.
Exactly, I know this shirt isn't designed for cycling so I do understand why you may not want reflective strips and the like, but I do wish they had an option or two that was at least stand out colours.
I agree with you about the “fashion aspect”. A shirt with a collar is a little more dressy than a T-shirt. I was riding the GAP trail with a friend and we had the opportunity to go out to a nice dinner with some folks at a b&b we were staying at. He showered with the Columbia shirt on and by the time we left for dinner he was dry and very presentable.
Love the ending
