In 2021, I gave away everything, moved into my Prius, and moved to Silicon Valley. I am on a mission to better understand the world, and to help improve it through technological innovation. Living in my car gives me the financial freedom to focus on that mission. Living in Silicon Valley puts me at the center of human innovation. These videos document my journey.

VIDEO SUMMARY
This video is part of a series that I am doing on essential items for car camping and car living. These are items that I have found over the last two and a half years, since moving into my Prius, which are very useful and helpful. This video covers the uses of pepper spray, important information to consider when shopping for pepper spray, and a review of the SABRE product. I have purchased the SABRE Crossfire Pepper Gel four times since moving into my car. I carry one can in my backpack, I keep on in the area where I sleep, and I keep another can in the glovebox. I gave the fourth can away as a gift.

Our son got into a bad situation on a remote West Texas river. His satellite phone saved his life. Can't imagine anyone going remote without one!
The local cops prey on people sleeping in their car it's a sad fact the people who are most likely to prey on travels and now they can take all your money with civil forfeiture so never carry much cash
Those liberal, blue cities are so shameful. Supposed to be the places of tolerance, I am going to keep my tail in my affordable red state. I just hope all the New Yorkers don't turn my state blue.
Most truck stops I've stayed at I never had a problem. At one in Omaha, some foreign guy hated that I was driving a bada55 pickup truck and he kept spitting on the side of it. I wanted to key his stupid lil van but I had a destination several hundred miles away to get to. I washed it all off and kept my focus where it needed to be. It took everything not to engage and get very uncivilized. I don't like the foreigners in this country. I prefer the rural stops because it's real Americans! LOL!
Homeless or HomeFREE ! A person living in their vehicle is either homeless, homeFREE or recreational. Homeless a person who cannot afford rent or mortgage and you’re living in your vehicle until affordable housing is available. HomeFREE A person who choice to live in their vehicle and not looking for affordable housing , pay rent or mortgage. Recreational a person who vehicle camp & live in house/ apartment
We're can I buy that unit for my truck I also sleep on the way to quartzite AZ I like you're video thx Jo from mo.
I ALWAYS sleep at Love's. They encourage it. I stay all night, NEVER had a problem.
Growing up in the Deep South we pretty much have to run the compressor with the heat or it will fog internally so I’m just in the habit of it now. Also change out the internal air filter often.

I think MAIL is a big question. How do we obtain an adress for taxes, driver licenses, packages, etc
Darn! The pump that I have sounds like the one that you have. This one seems much better.
Strange.
That was very helpful. Fantastic ideas for working cheaply.
What if you have to make a quick get away and all the windows are secured with blackout panels?
If you have dual zone climate control set one side to 65 degrees on ac and the other side to 75 on heat. It'll balance the temperature around 70 and the cold side will pull moisture from the air like a dehumidifier.
Freaking hate this sh*t. Really troublesome, specially if you have a family and children, I became a tad paranoid of the health implications and how thorough one is (or isn’t) in getting ridden of it
When I worked in the city (NYC) there was a Chinese woman in every subway station selling umbrellas for cheap. OK, this was in Manhattan but Brooklyn might have had them as well. They were available and good for a few rainstorms and cheap enough that you didn’t care if you lost or broke them.
question?? ......what does one do, say a new person who's thinking of going on the road for a few months, when it's hot outside at night. just wondering for a friend......lol
I once slept in the airport parking, cause I had a flight, but I bought a cheap car plastic car cover, covered the car , you can roll the windows down slight, got comfy and overslept but did make the flight. I have to be as close as possible to the airport for my next flight and that means the parking lot, and finding a place to buy a cheap plastic cover again.
Good idea. Just wondering where I keep all the repair stuff in my Prius.
Urban area truck stops and Walmarts, etc., are lobbied by the local RV parks to not permit overnight parking. Rural areas not so much.
I have been all over the lower 48 states in my Prius's. Loves is one place I have often seen the signs. I usually will just keep moving if I see a sign. If there is no other place and I am tired, I will just lay the front seat back and just try to get a few hours of sleep. The only place I got a knock on the window was a rest area in North Carolina. I heard the knock and about that time the engine started up. I opened the flap in my window blocker and an older man was walking a few spaces down to another car in the parking area. He stayed at that car for a bit then walked back inside the rest area building. That is one of the places that had signs for no overnight parking. I was tired and needed rest. Still curios why the guy knocked but I figure he was the night staff of the rest stop. With the exception of Pennsylvania and their strict 2 hr parking limit, I find rest areas to be my favorite places to spend the night.
Brill stuff thank you
I've seem some wireless ones that are quite a bit more expensive. I've been looking into them since I seem to get worse gas mileage if my tires are not aired up correctly. I'll check this one out. Thanks.
All good points. Most specific info re spray. Thanks.
I remember driving from Florida to western Wisconsin one winter, and by the time I hit Eau Claire, I was so tired, I couldn't see straight. I pulled into some fast food lot, parked in an out-of-the-way spot, and napped for a couple of hours. No one bothered me, despite my windows not being tinted or blocked. Each time you have to stop (for whatever reason), an assessment needs to be made. I've heard ER lots are great, especially if you park farther away from the entrance. I've also parked overnight in a highway rest stop. Only stayed a few hours, but that was enough. Due to the current astronomical rents in this country, I may soon be living in my car, also a Prius, so I appreciate these vids.
Good info.
Thank's for the information
Great stuff defo a must have in the car thanks
Do not park in the back with the trucks flying J has RV parking out front if your in a small camper or auto and can fit in a small parking place same with most other truck stops just do not be in the way of the trucks . It’s not advised to park in any large city due to crime better out away from a city . I was a OTR trucker for 50 years and running bobtail that’s how I would stop for the night but often they would wake me up asking us to move no matter I just bought $800 worth of fuel .
I'm going to get one. Thanks!
I been to that Van Sicklen cemetery. It’s well known for being haunted.
Defo important item have a jumper not this brand but loads on amazon thanks for great tip
Which brand do you recommend?
How does it stay charged in order to charge your car battery?
This is probably too nit picky for the grand overview, but if you're **really** squeezed for $$, it might be worth mentioning that your expenses seem geared more toward weekly or bi-weekly expenses (except for insurance and phone?). That means every 3 months (once a quarter), you're going to come up a week short....
With a Prius it doesn't use the 12V battery to start in the same way. You only need enough amperage to power up the relay that powers the high voltage hybrid battery (and CPUs and whatever else start up systems there are), and then high voltage battery powers the electic motor-generators to start the ICE engine. A $10 jump starter from Ali Express would probably work. I believe Honda hybrids (maybe others, not sure) use an ICE-style starting system that needs a ton of cranking amps to turn over the ICE to get it started. Some say that's better because if a Toyota HV battery gets depleted there is no way to charge it without highly specialized equipment, really only a concern if you plan on leaving it sit for multiple months.
Brill broken down video thank you for putting it together great job
Well organized/presented. I have my Prius V already set up but I like to see how right I was - and that I probably can’t get it better. Didn’t know about the key fob issue though. Thanks for that tidbit.
Can't find many of these places in Southern NY. HA.
Thank you for this video. I see someone mentioned rest areas. Other than “do not park in the Semi area” is there a difference between truck stops as a whole vs. rest areas? Couple decades ago I owned an Aztek and drove MN to GA sleeping at rest areas in my car (pillow & bedding in back), mostly during the day because traveling at night there was less traffic. I’ve been wanting to take a similar trip in my latest vehicle to Las Vegas, are there Rest Areas out west or is it all truck stops? Plan on looking at your other videos and subscribed, particularly the parking garage vids, as I wondered if sleeping in Vegas’ casinos parking ramps was possible (not camping out, just for a few hours). Noticed one sign in this video mentioned handicapped. I’ll have handicap plates in a couple months, is there leeway for the handicapped?
Outstanding video! Thanks for the many useful tips!
Also is there a new compact system with 360 degree 24 hrs surverillance cam system as a whole, not like diy..
Love the vid, greatest i have ever watched. Can you pls cover the topic of how to select good condition Prius ? Tx .
That would be very helpful.
I did this for many months last year in my '14 Prius V while waiting for an apartment I wanted to come open. . I'm 6' 3" and fit fine on a 4' 3-fold memory foam mattress. Visited 19 states, I think it was. Mostly around the Great Lakes because I hadn't been there before. Very minimalist; no fridge or fancy set up. Stayed mostly at Cracker Barrels, ate salads and such from Walmart, too. Walked a whole lot. Did camp a couple of places; the Meriwether Lewis Campground on the Natchez Trace, and the Toledo Bend Dam in TX. Both were free for multiple days. Happy trail , ya'll!.
This is an excellent summary, from a guy who really knows what he is doing. I'm pretty experienced at car camping, but the one thing I did forget to do, is have a second person to test whether the door-handle entry works, in the exact situations (regarding locks and car ignition) that I sleep in it. It will be crazy if I find out that I slept 2 nights per week for years, in a casino parking lot if someone could just open my door by, well, opening my door. While Faraday bags are all the rage now, some are not as good as just using an Altoids or cookie tin, according to reviews where after being used for a while, the flexing of the bag compromises the thin shielding layer that sometimes isn't very different from PopTarts package material.
now I want a pop tart
I always park at rest stops in my car when im on the road but I go where the cars are not where the big rigs are and i never had an issue.
