VIDEO SUMMARY
This video is part of a series that I am doing on essential items for car camping and car living. These are items that I have found over the last two and a half years, since moving into my Prius, which are very useful and helpful. This video covers the uses of pepper spray, important information to consider when shopping for pepper spray, and a review of the SABRE product. I have purchased the SABRE Crossfire Pepper Gel four times since moving into my car. I carry one can in my backpack, I keep on in the area where I sleep, and I keep another can in the glovebox. I gave the fourth can away as a gift.

    If you have dual zone climate control set one side to 65 degrees on ac and the other side to 75 on heat. It'll balance the temperature around 70 and the cold side will pull moisture from the air like a dehumidifier.

    I once slept in the airport parking, cause I had a flight, but I bought a cheap car plastic car cover, covered the car , you can roll the windows down slight, got comfy and overslept but did make the flight. I have to be as close as possible to the airport for my next flight and that means the parking lot, and finding a place to buy a cheap plastic cover again.

    I have been all over the lower 48 states in my Prius's. Loves is one place I have often seen the signs. I usually will just keep moving if I see a sign. If there is no other place and I am tired, I will just lay the front seat back and just try to get a few hours of sleep. The only place I got a knock on the window was a rest area in North Carolina. I heard the knock and about that time the engine started up. I opened the flap in my window blocker and an older man was walking a few spaces down to another car in the parking area. He stayed at that car for a bit then walked back inside the rest area building. That is one of the places that had signs for no overnight parking. I was tired and needed rest. Still curios why the guy knocked but I figure he was the night staff of the rest stop. With the exception of Pennsylvania and their strict 2 hr parking limit, I find rest areas to be my favorite places to spend the night.

    I remember driving from Florida to western Wisconsin one winter, and by the time I hit Eau Claire, I was so tired, I couldn't see straight. I pulled into some fast food lot, parked in an out-of-the-way spot, and napped for a couple of hours. No one bothered me, despite my windows not being tinted or blocked. Each time you have to stop (for whatever reason), an assessment needs to be made. I've heard ER lots are great, especially if you park farther away from the entrance. I've also parked overnight in a highway rest stop. Only stayed a few hours, but that was enough. Due to the current astronomical rents in this country, I may soon be living in my car, also a Prius, so I appreciate these vids.

    Do not park in the back with the trucks flying J has RV parking out front if your in a small camper or auto and can fit in a small parking place same with most other truck stops just do not be in the way of the trucks . It’s not advised to park in any large city due to crime better out away from a city . I was a OTR trucker for 50 years and running bobtail that’s how I would stop for the night but often they would wake me up asking us to move no matter I just bought $800 worth of fuel .

    This is probably too nit picky for the grand overview, but if you're **really** squeezed for $$, it might be worth mentioning that your expenses seem geared more toward weekly or bi-weekly expenses (except for insurance and phone?). That means every 3 months (once a quarter), you're going to come up a week short....

    With a Prius it doesn't use the 12V battery to start in the same way. You only need enough amperage to power up the relay that powers the high voltage hybrid battery (and CPUs and whatever else start up systems there are), and then high voltage battery powers the electic motor-generators to start the ICE engine. A $10 jump starter from Ali Express would probably work. I believe Honda hybrids (maybe others, not sure) use an ICE-style starting system that needs a ton of cranking amps to turn over the ICE to get it started. Some say that's better because if a Toyota HV battery gets depleted there is no way to charge it without highly specialized equipment, really only a concern if you plan on leaving it sit for multiple months.

    Thank you for this video. I see someone mentioned rest areas. Other than “do not park in the Semi area” is there a difference between truck stops as a whole vs. rest areas? Couple decades ago I owned an Aztek and drove MN to GA sleeping at rest areas in my car (pillow & bedding in back), mostly during the day because traveling at night there was less traffic. I’ve been wanting to take a similar trip in my latest vehicle to Las Vegas, are there Rest Areas out west or is it all truck stops? Plan on looking at your other videos and subscribed, particularly the parking garage vids, as I wondered if sleeping in Vegas’ casinos parking ramps was possible (not camping out, just for a few hours). Noticed one sign in this video mentioned handicapped. I’ll have handicap plates in a couple months, is there leeway for the handicapped?

    I did this for many months last year in my '14 Prius V while waiting for an apartment I wanted to come open. . I'm 6' 3" and fit fine on a 4' 3-fold memory foam mattress. Visited 19 states, I think it was. Mostly around the Great Lakes because I hadn't been there before. Very minimalist; no fridge or fancy set up. Stayed mostly at Cracker Barrels, ate salads and such from Walmart, too. Walked a whole lot. Did camp a couple of places; the Meriwether Lewis Campground on the Natchez Trace, and the Toledo Bend Dam in TX. Both were free for multiple days. Happy trail , ya'll!.

    This is an excellent summary, from a guy who really knows what he is doing. I'm pretty experienced at car camping, but the one thing I did forget to do, is have a second person to test whether the door-handle entry works, in the exact situations (regarding locks and car ignition) that I sleep in it. It will be crazy if I find out that I slept 2 nights per week for years, in a casino parking lot if someone could just open my door by, well, opening my door. While Faraday bags are all the rage now, some are not as good as just using an Altoids or cookie tin, according to reviews where after being used for a while, the flexing of the bag compromises the thin shielding layer that sometimes isn't very different from PopTarts package material.

    If you flip the tire upside down so there's a concave dip under the seat that might give you a small bit of additional storage under the dropped down seat back. IF you overshoot that cutting issue around 9:21 you could probably stuff a pool noodle in that well area to fill in the gap to support that panel.

    I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, but my age really caught up with me the last 6 months. You actually have to be at least a little in shape (flexible) to live in a small space. Getting from a laying position into a seated position in a Prius requires it. It’s a little embarrassing but true. If you have a back problem or need to physically stretch out (like yoga), then you’re gonna need a motel room… Anywho…

  • @EfficientRVer
    @EfficientRVer 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This one is great advice, because it isn't obvious that the parking regulations on a street next to a cemetery would be looser, but apparently they actually are. My grandfather's last job, for about 30-40 years, was being the grounds superintendent of a cemetery until the late 1960s. Though a private cemetery, it is has a highway on one side, and local streets on the other sides. I will have to check its parking regulations on those streets the next time I am there, to see if your theory is true in that old, formerly rural, now-wealthy suburb in NJ. His work there spanned the era from hand-dug graves and reel mowers, to the backhoe era and many kinds of mowers. When his only daughter (there were 3 sons, including my father) died in 1965 at age 40, he decided to dig her grave by hand, and not let his crew help. My parents and 3 of my 4 grandparents, including him, are buried there also. It's impossible to visit without thinking of him digging my aunt's grave at age 64, alone. Likewise, when he and I (as a young teen) did a lot of digging to level my parents' yard for an above-ground pool, and make room for sand under its liner, I got to see that my father and uncles were not exaggerating when they said nobody was as good with a shovel. He didn't seem to be working too hard, but a lot of earth got moved from and to where he wanted, before you knew it. He'd take little breaks to rest and drink. "Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink, or until you're worn out to rest. Working until you're exhausted, gets less work done, from then on. If you get more work done than anyone else, it doesn't matter that it looks like they're working harder than you. Work smart, whatever you do for a living." It was great life advice. It's obvious that you "park smart" even if that leads to some places that sound odd until you think about it. Having nothing going on, on one side of you, plus having looser regulations actually allowing you to be there, sounds like a win to me.

    The number one rule of parking anywhere in any vehicle is to not interfere with others where you park. This should be common sense but it is very possible to be in a parking spot and still be in the way. I also agree to PLEASE DO NOT PARK CARS IN TRUCK SPOTS! I get annoyed enough with bobtail trucks parking in full size parking spots.
