i grew up in palo alto when houses cost 30k (1960's). i have a HUGE problem with real estate investing ever being allowed. they profit off of our backs. the rv's are also populated with those that just cannot afford rent. (i.e. service workers)
It is amazing how high home prices have gotten in Palo Alto. I wish that I could afford a place there, but I don't think I would rent or buy even if I could afford it. There is a point when things become unreasonably priced, and (for me) Palo Alto has reached that point.
Such a shame for anyone. If I had tons of money, that is the one thing I'd tackle...homelessness. I especially hate that are vets suffer from this. They deserve so much more.
plenty of people with money have tried. the powers that be make sure it doesn't happen. i voted blue all of my life. born and raised in california since the 50's. there are no competent/honest politicians out there.
That's a good idea. Unfortunately, I think that the biggest issue in Silicon Valley is the cost of land, which makes it hard to build any affordable housing. Given the extraordinary land prices, even Japanese style pod units would be very expensive to rent. It seems like the high cost of living is just a fact of life in Silicon Valley. It ultimately comes down to supply and demand economics, and Silicon Valley has limited supply with very high demand.
i've been trying to find low-income elderly housing for over a decade. after waiting on a palo alto list for seven years, my name came up. all they did was screw me around. it was the only property that actually was a real apartment (not a 350 square foot closet with no kitchen, balcony or anything else) and they wanted $1,250, which was somewhat reasonable. when i STARTED on the list, the units were about $750/$800. i was offered a 350 square foot unit (no kitchen, no nada) in my current city and they also wanted $1,250. I refused. what they call affordable at this point really is not.
Great insight thank you
Thanks!

I agree. I can't imagine being homeless and having no options in life.

That was a real eye opener! Has anyone thought about capsule hotels like they have in Japan for a low cost accommodation?

Why doesn't your company put in RV parking?
Small space?
