Does a Toroid suppress EFHW RFI noise?
This is a quick project that uses a Palomar Engineers RFI noise suppression toroid to clean up the signal from an EFHW antenna. It worked! In particular I monitored frequency 7.043 MHz before and after installing this 17 turn toroid and the noise was reduced from S9 10 down to S8.
Diversidad de recepción para radio amateurs
EFHW or DXCC, which is better? It depends..
This is a video of examples of EFHW and DX Commander classic using diversity reception. This highlights how each antenna works better depending on the transmitting station and band. The DXCC seems to be better for DX comms and the EFHW seems to be better for closer stations; however, this is not a hard and fast rule as the video shows.
ANAN G2 Diversity Reception Walkthrough
Diversity reception is the functionality by which a transceiver receives input from two distinct antennas and allows the operator to combine these signals by adjusting the gain and phase of a reference signal. It serves to reduce QRM in that one antenna may be receiving the signal stronger than the other one, or less noisily than the other. This video shows my experiment on Apache Labs ANAN G2'...

I tried Banana before and couldn't stand the latency. Do you have the same problems?
Hello. Yes, I'm seeing a slight latency on Phone w/the ANAN but it doesn't keep me from making Phone contacts. Now a days I mostly run CW listening on the headphone jack in the backplane and find there's no latency. 73.
Great video Stephen. Thanks for getting me in the log. 73, Jim
Thanks for the comment and thanks for hunting! Hunters like yourself make the POTA program work. HP to CUAGN 73.
1. When referring to cable you mean wire? 2. do you have a link to Mike where you got info from. Thanks (Very green newbie here)
Thanks for the questions and welcome to the hobby! It's a great hobby and I hope you'll have a good time with it. 1. I used the yellow 18 AWG wire as my radiating element and the RG-8X coaxial cable from the radio to the 49:1 transformer. 2. Not sure I understand the question but I did include the links to the transformer, 18 AWG wire, and battery holder in the description. Best of luck!
@ you referenced seeing a video about this before you used this setup, but there was no link to that video. Do you remember the video?
@@prepperboss If you're referring to the mention at 09:35 mark in the video, I'm giving credit to K8MRD's video on EFHW deployment using a fiberglass pole: th-cam.com/video/vMtKKD4VibE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=hJXIzqrTZqjIPWHR
@ yea I was thank you.
How well does the g90 dx compared to the 7300
Thanks for the question. I used the G90 to make an SSB POTA contact from Bastrop State park in Texas @20W all the way to Inuvik, CA which is near the Northwest passage. So it worked quite well. The IC 7300 running also @20W has made a POTA contact from Stephen F Austin State park in Texas to Hawaii on CW. So it also worked very well. I think they're both very good, but the IC 7300 gives you the leeway to increase the power from 20W up to 100W to make those difficult contacts. Best of luck!
Interesting tests there. Just of interest. What is the input impedance of the picoscope?
Thanks for the question. For the picoscope 2204a measurements the specs show input impedance of 1 MΩ ± 1% ∥ 15 pF ± 2 pF.
@@quantumradio TNX !!! 🙂
I appreciate this is an old video so I don't necessarily expect a response/ I have your exact same settings on windows 7 machine. I have tried many different usb cables/hubs/vb audio cable/voicmeeter/virtual port drivers/ferrite beads and rings etc. but keep running in to the same issue. Rx works fine ft8 coming in great. As soon as I hit Tx everything breaks and have to restart trusdx driver. Any tios or ideas please? Thanks for the great video.
Thank you for the comment/question. I have read that the truSDX on FT8 is very finicky as far as operating with the single USB cable and Guido's driver program for the PC. I have also found it to be only OK for FT8; for example, it sometimes looses sync with my PC and I have reset the truSDX. In your case, I'd say Windows 7 is quite an old OS since it was released ˜2009 and that may be part of the issue. You see, my setup used Windows 11. Now, as far as Rx getting the FT8 signal, that's a milestone. I mean it's quite good that you're getting that working since it implies that many of your settings are correct. When you Tx things go belly up to me speaks to the many variables in the setup, e.g. the single USB cable, Guido's driver program, the Windows OS, and perhaps most importantly the trUSDX itself. Don't get me wrong, I still think that the truSDX is a great little rig that sips current and works great. Heck I took it to England and did a POTA activation there where I got a Michigan station. However, Manuel and Guido clearly state that the truSDX is an experimenter's rig and should not be expected to work flawlessly like an ICOM or YAESU. I tend to agree. Love the radio but... it has compromises in its design to make it affordable. I still have the truSDX in my portable pack that I take as a backup in my car. I think highly of it and use if for CW but not really for FT8 anymore. Best of luck and 73!
@@quantumradio Thank you very much for your comprehensive response. You confirmed much of what I thought. I am looking to get a more serious rig soon but I also like experimenting which is why I decided to get my foundation licence for HAM here in England. Wull let you know if I get it working. All the best. 73s
On your G2, can you define for me how the two antennas are connected to the rear of the G2? For instance is the Commander on ANT1 and the other antenna on ANT2 or is it on RX-2? Thanks & 73 Art W1SWL
Thank you for the question. I just looked at the back panel of my ANAN G2 and the DX Commander vertical antenna is connected to the ANT1 bnc terminal. The EFHW is connected to the RX 2 bnc terminal. Best of luck & 73!
Ok thanks, that is how I have my primary and secondary antennas attached as well. Thanks for the info. Art
Do you use two radio’s on one antenna? I see a switch, I think?
Thank you for the comment. Yes, there was a Daiwa model CS 201 switch that I used to connect the one antenna to each of the two radios sequentially. 73.
Thanks! I was thinking about doing that, but actually afraid of molesting a radio 😃

@@quantumradio Thats good to hear! Are you using it with any amplifier etc?
@@MikeDent No, I don't have an amplifier or antenna tuner. I have a nanoVNA that helps me with my resonant antennas. 100W works pretty good especially on CW. 73.
Thank you very much for this video! 🙂 I am new to ham radio and I downloaded MMANA GAL only recently because was impressed by the results that others got from it and showed it in their videos, but I myself had no idea how to get there. Now, I followed along your instructions and fortunately I got the same results - I was a bit worried that the software wouldn't work the same as on the OS it was programmed for (I am using it on Linux/Wine). 🙂
Thank you for the comment and congrats on running MMANA GAL on Linux! I think that's what's so great about the hobby in that we experiment and challenge ourselves to learn new tech. MMANA GAL is a good tool to see if a particular antenna design is better or worse than another. I think it's straightforward and I personally like the wizard-like sequence of the tabs, starting on the left with Geometry>View>Calculate>Far Field Plots. Also, note that the Dielectric & Conductivity values are shown in tabular form at this URL. gal-ana.de/basicmm/en/#7 Best of luck & welcome to the hobby!
At the first diagram when we have 3 inputs A B and C, where is exactly C connected at, so we can make a loop of carry

Great video. I may need to rig up one of these and test. It sure would be nice to dig people out of the noise a little better; especially when I am using an EFHW for POTA. About how long of a cable did you need for 17 turns?
David, I think it was about a 2ft length of coax. A bit longer wouldn't hurt though. Best of luck! 73.
@@quantumradioThank you sir!
Fascinating! I have been wondering about this. Thanks!
Thank you for the comment. 73.
Man I'm glad you made this, I've been struggling with my Anan G2 setup
Thanks for the comment. It's a great radio and Thetis a great software package; however, the SW has many levels which makes it a bit complex. Glad the video helped! 73.

Hey Stu! thanks for the comments and hope to see you on the air! 73.
@ 03:06 Current-density J = charge-density x velocity = (n . q / vol) x v = (Q / vol) x dz/dt = (Q / dt) x (vol / dz) = current / area. @ 30:50 This seems to be a nice result, but it is not complete. There is no time-dependence and thus, there is no acceleration! The problem is solved by using an oscillating current: I = I(max) . exp(w.t). This exponential is missing in the video.
Thanks for the comment. (1) J = dI/dA = rho*v. (2) the analysis shown assumes only a snapshot in time which is why e*ikr is used without the eˆ-iwt part. I agree that it's not the complete expression since we're missing time dependence but it suffices to show the spatial character of the wave.

@@quantumradio Absolutely. From the book I wasn't so sure I got things right. But now I have. Thanks for the confirmation.
I am learning CW also. I am very intrigued by this radio. I think it is its size and how well it does for the size it is. Do you really like the radio and would you recommend it? Thank you for sharing this video. I love it.
Thank you for the comment. The (tr)uSDX is my one and only POTA rig now a days and works great on CW mode. I've taken it to state parks in my area and even activated (CW) a park in England with it. I'm sure there are better, & more expensive, portable radios out there but I'm quite satisfied with it. As far as a recommendation, I hesitate a bit and would prefer to only share my experiences with the radio since we each have favorites and different criteria. I like its low current draw (˜50mA on Rx and ˜500mA on Tx), portability, versatility (CW and SSB modes), and low price (US$149 on Amazon). I hope that helps & 73!
Very nice ... in all aspects ... like the other antenna-videos. Worth a playlist ;-)
Thank you for the suggestion. I've created the "Antenna Physics" playlist w/only the antenna videos in it. Plus the numerical integration in Python for the HalfWave Dipole antenna. Best of luck in your studies.
@@quantumradio Exactly what I hoped for. Thank you very much!
I have both radios also. I rarely use the 7300 now as I find the rx audio too harsh to listen to for any length of time. The G90 is on all the time now in my shack. Now, if XIEGU could make a base radio version of the G90 I think it would be popular.
Thank you for the comment. I've heard a similar comparative audio report from another Ham radio operator. I tend to like the way both radios sound, though that's my personal view. 73!
Isn't the counterpoise on the 50ohm primary side of the 49:1 unun transformer while the antenna is on the 2450ohm secondary side? How does MMANA compensate for this impedance transformation of the counterpoise? And how do you compensate for the primary parallel 110pf capacitor in your model? Have you built, tested, and measured the actual length's of the antenna against the simulation?
Thanks for the toughtful comment. The way I look at it, the coax sheath is my counterpoise in the simulation. MMANA GAL doesn't consider an impedance transformation for the counterpoise, it does an impedance transformation from the feedpoint to the antenna element. The counterpoise is the ground wire, coax sheath really, connecting the ground on the transformer to my floating ground of my transceiver. I could probably fiddle more with the counterpoise in this model but I found that this simulation gave the insight that I needed to build the EFHW antenna and start testing it. I didn't model the capacitor as a load in my simulation. However, to your point, I have seen reports that the high frequencies are helped by using the capacitor but my model doesn't include this effect. Yes, I have built, tested, and folded (not cut) my antenna element to resonate on 40m, 20m, 15m. The EFHW antenna I built last year at field day is pretty much what I modeled here and it's the one that I take on POTA outings now a days. It's very portable and you can drape it over a tree branch, or use a fiberglass pole to hold up the antenna element end. This makes for a quick setup. Hope that answers the doubts. 73!

Thank you for the comment. At 8:54 when NR2 is enabled it cleaned up the signal pretty good. I then unlicked NR2 at 8:58 and the noise came back. I enabled NR2 again at 9:07 and the noise went away, again. I then clicked on SNB at 9:14 and the signal became sharper in the higher frequencies and clearer. At 9:22 I enabled ANF and the signal was mostly unaffected since no Noise filters had been previously configured on this window.
