Valkyrie Elysium- Is It Really THAT Bad?
I think it's interesting and noteworthy that Alan Wake was described before bright falls as a party hound hedonist with massive anger issues and a dark streak. After Bright Falls you have those characteristics split into Zane and Scratch, where Alan himself almost never comes off as any of those things. Yet consistently in each game, everyone who knew him before - they describe him as such.
8:48 "People hate the puzzles, Ilmo." "People love the puzzles, Jaako!"
I loved Night Springs, myself, though I think Coffee World / North Star was the weakest. Number One Fan showed off how good the combat COULD have been in AW2 if they weren't afraid to give you more ammo and more enemies like the older games, and Time Breaker actually had a TON of huge ramifications for the greater universe - the reason you probably didn't think so is not playing Quantum Break.
th-cam.com/video/zm7gYI7wLnM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=tIQL2AWVDpps6pUR You should of probably done your research too
Alan Wake 2 is Epic Games exclusive on PC, that's the only reason I just won't buy it.
Wasn’t there some documents talking about introducing Dylan’s drawings into the mix and like them trying to recreate Wakes writing lead to everything. I wasn’t under the impression that he actually wrote this scenario that’s playing out in the lake house.
The Night Springs dlc is actually inter-spliced with the main game if you're playing it for the first time. For example: in the first "Alan" mission, you encounter a TV and play the 1st waitress episode before then continuing on with Alan's stage. I wonder if Lake House is also "in-game" like that?
In game, The Lake House becomes available right at the end of Return 6. When Estevez and Casey are waiting for Saga to tell them the summoning plan, you have the option to ask Estevez for details about her trip into town and what happened there. The narration is her talking directly to Saga (idk if that's made clear when you play it standalone). Then you go right into the point of no return (ha ha) save.
Night Springs was really just made for fun, and it's hilarious. The Lake House, on the other hand, really was a horror experience and they nailed it.
I think Time Breaker was deceptively lore heavy. There's a lot in there that goes beyond the joke, and it's overlooked.
Love your videos, but you should stop mentioning dumbass gamergate type shit and giving it creedence in my opinion. Doesn’t deserve the time of day
First, thanks for the kind words. And as far as the neo-gamergate stuff goes. I understand your perspective, but this channel does have a political bent to it. It’s Digital Hauntology after all. I’m a self admitted leftist, and art is a black mirror to the society that creates it. I don’t bring this kind of analysis to everything I cover, but if there is a particular discourse surrounding a title- I’m always down to dive in and explore it. And I’d be happy to never have to talk about gamergate ever again, but history has a way of repeating itself. Thank you for your thoughts. Glad to have you here. Hope that stuff doesn’t overshadow the stuff that you like about the channel.
Very Pontypool-esque Edit: Just watched the entire video. Pontypooo it is
Oh no, not Pontypoo
I'm shocked that the channel hasn't reached 50k subscribers. One of the best video essay channels on this site
I appreciate it my friend. Trying my best out here- always trying to get better.

I promise I will make it happen in the near future. Right now I’m on a Mac, so I’ll have to figure out the best way to go about capture. But I’ll hook you up as soon as I can.
Digital hauntology sounds like my life. Subscribed!!
It’s definitely mine. 🥲 Welcome to the channel. Thank you for watching!
Thank you! I always suspect that Alan Wake has become the ultimate big bad in this universe. I thought it was really f*cked-up that he wrote in Saga to his manuscript. Great analysis!
Yeah, I thought they were basically beating us over the heads with it during Night Springs- but the amount of people I run into that don’t seem to agree is pretty crazy. We will see in the future. And yeah, Saga, The Marmonts, and Lane all got super raw deals. Thank you for watching. I’m glad you liked the video.
I think he's both the ultimate good and ultimate bad. He is both God and the Devil. Just look at how Scratch is described - and Alan is his inverse.
I believe it was said that Alan Wake doesn't simply create realities. A claim that he is the root cause of all of the misfortune is incorrect. He is more of a conscientious medium between reality, fiction and the future. It's something like different futures and realities bleeding into his vision, which let's him write. So he is kind of like a clairvoyant more than anything.
Yeah I think we just have different reads on what is going on. We will see how it plays out in the future. Thank you for watching.
@@digitalhauntology It's how it's explained in the main game. He sees "visions" of things that he could possibly have no idea about. He originally misinterpreted these visions as artistic inspiration, which is how he wrote the Casey novels. He didn't know he was writing about an actual guy
I think his power limitations people keep referring to as fact are an in-universe, in-character error. "All these rules you set for yourself.."
Robocop is not purely an 80s action movie, its more of an horror action movie, especially the first 2 movies.. So much brutatlity and disturbing scenes like the ones when they present the Robots that lose their mind or kill ppl around when they malfunction.. Its like Terminator 1, a mix of Action and some horror elements.. Gosh i wish movies nowadays had this haunting / disturbing element in some movies..
What I want to know is... What's up with that one guy at the bus stop in the intro of the game that keeps looking back at Jesse after she enters the Oldest House, should she stand still for a bit?
Maybe he knows what’s up with the place, haha Thanks for watching!
@digitalhauntology Very well could be. Glad I found your vid/channel - Control is one of my favorite all-time video games - right up there with BioShock and Bloodborne.
@@TheHi-NoteFunClub-BeatsByMike I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Control is one of my all times as well. I have a project on this channel where I rank every game I’ve covered. Spoiler- Control is currently in the number one spot. So I’m right there with you

I'm glad you have warmed to horror games a little! Great video, feels bittersweet to close this chapter.
Always trying to have an open mind- but there have always been things about the genre that I’m not the biggest fan of. I recently played the Silent Hill 2 remake and SH: Short message- and I’ll definitely make a video about them in due time. But both experiences we super rad even if I was questioning certain choices. Honestly, I’m kinda of happy to take a little break from my boy Alan. I’ve been thinking about that fool almost everyday for the last year. But I’ll be there with bells on the next time Remedy drops anything. Thanks for watching, buddy.
Love your coverage of the remedy games
Thank you my friend. You’re the best. Hope you enjoy the video!
Popping in to say I'm gonna buy Alan Wake 2 this week so I will finally be able to catch up on your videos that I haven't seen. Be well man 🤙🤘
I hope you enjoy catching up. This one is special.
@digitalhauntology I will man very excited
God I loved these games, especially the second (just found it to be a much more fun videogame, and I really like the comic book art style). Really cool to see someone go into this much detail on them in 2024! I would do unspeakable things to bring this franchise back from the dead.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a third! Thanks for watching!
@@digitalhauntology Hell yeah man, great content! Underrated channel - keeping my fingers crossed for you :)
Thanks, my friend. Glad you enjoyed the video.
14:55 That’s the issue, she’s not “cool”. So there’s nothing to makeup for the “rude” part.
@@AkaiKnight Yeah that’s going to be real subjective. I found the character charming in a flawed sort of way. If you don’t like the character- probably not going to be able to sway you on that one.
I do like Robocop 2, despite how wonky it is, but one thing about the sequels that bugs me is the backslide from the ending of the original. Murphy embraces his humanity after everything and he just kinda goes back to more robot again in 2. I really wanted to see more of him evolving his human side more
Yeah it’s a strange movie overall- and the return to the status quo makes it jarring from the beginning. But it is fun in a comic booky kind of way. Thanks for watching.
Robocop: Rogue City has me hooked. I bought it last week, I was worried but it's a really good purchase. The only thing I don't like is how easy it is to turn on night vision mode when your in those intense gun battles, I wish they didn't make Robo's directional joystick the same as the night vision button. Other than that, It's an amazing game.
It’s a terrific game. I never ran into the problem that you’re talking about, but that does sound frustrating. Can you change the button mapping?
Great writing. Thank you for this work
I really appreciate it! I try to put a lot of work into these- so that means a lot. Thank you for watching!
I didnt play the original games back in the day. I actually really like Elysium. I love the combat. I did buy Valkyrie Profile Lenneth recently and am having a good time with it. But I’m glad I bought Elysium. I get why fans of the original games feel let down. I really fucked up my early years of gaming by missing a lot of great RPG’s.
I’m basically in the same boat as you. Elysium was chill, and while I do get that it isn’t quite the same as the mainline series… I don’t get all the hate. Glad to have played it. Now it just sits on the shelf gathering dust haha. Thank you for watching!
got this game during gmg's black friday sale and i love it.
It’s pretty damn good. And a good deal makes it even better! Thanks for watching

Lets gooooooo
You’re the best.
i think it's generational.
Thanks a lot for the shoutout, I appreciate your kind words. The title for the Alan Wake video is a necesarry evil, nuance isn't allowed on the internet unfortunately, so if you want to express nuance, you have to present it in a hyperbolic way that gets people's attention first, then present your points after the fact. I think it's important to be critical of the things that you like, even if you are a fan of a franchise. The Darkness 1 really needs a PC release, I played The Darkness 2 but never got to play the first. I still haven't gotten out of my edgelord phase even though I'm 31 XD, I can't help it I'm a sucker for it. I enjoyed my time with The Darkness 2, it gave me a taste of that Painkiller aesthetic with different but still fun gameplay. Obviosuly the first video that got me into the channel was your Valkyrie Profile video since as a long term fan I was curious what someone who got into the franchise through Elysium would think and the results did not surprise me and were kinda interesting, we both feel the same way about it.
Nah, it was overdue- you’ve been a fixture in this community for a long time now. I hate the need for clickbait, but you are right, people need to read the headline and care enough to check out the video. But it does feel sort of manipulative. Kind of hate it. I’m really hoping for a re-release of both Darkness games. They both deserve to be preserved. And even though I say they are edgy or edge lord adjacent- I don’t mean that as a wholly negative description. I was crazy edgy for years, but I’m 36 now and I just try to present myself in a different way now. But I’ll still get a kick out of a wild joke or two. I like your style a lot- you say crazy shit, but you also back it up by exploring nuance. So I’ve never considered you to be all out edgelord. Maybe just a little edgy haha. And yeah, I definitely remember when you popped up in the comments- it’s been a while now haha. Keep doing your thing, my friend

We need more AA games like this. You can feel the passion the developers has for Robocop. Just like with Terminator.
Agreed! Super solid game and they get all the little details right. Will definitely go back to play terminator at some point. Thank you for watching!
Just finished beating the game, and now going for the Platinum trophy. It was a very mediocre experience game. Story was good, but very underdeveloped. The world itself was beautiful, but very empty. Like Vahalla, they could have put so much more stuff in their like a freaking ITEM SHOP!!! You have all these gems at the end of the game after you've buffed up Valkyrie and weapons, and then they serve zero purpose. Those could have been used to create items, new weapons, etc. And they could have had a more traditional leveling system. The combat was good, but too clunky. I wish there was a better way to cancel a combo, because you'll be hacking and slashing and can't dodge. And then after the prologue, it just becomes super repetitive with, do mission, talk to Odin, do a mission, talk to Odin, rinse and repeat. Not the worse game, but had way too much untapped potential. And the kicker, NO NEW GAME PLUS?! Like, come on, it 2024. Complete missed opportunity. 6.5/10 for me.
Great game, loved every minute of it. Definitely provides a ton of fan service, for every Robocop fan.

@digitalhauntology all jokes aside, I love Rogue City 🥳
me too, my friend, me too.
The thing to keep in mind about the nature of Wanted: Dead is, it's not really a Soleil game but rather a Soleil *made* game. While they were the main developer of all the content & mechanics (emphasis on were), they were not the first and definitely weren't the driving force behind the project's conception & direction. 110 Industries are, specifically then company's CEO and the game's creative director Sergei Kolobashkin (apparently, he also voices Doc character who vaguely looks like a fitter Sergei avatar). By all accounts, he was the person actively steering the development all the way to the finish line and making key decisions along the way, Soleil tasked with executing his visions using the funds and input he provided. 110 Industries is one of those Russian "digital media/entertainment" companies the local investors came to a habit of establishing over the past decade or so (after the first truly uncomfortable sanctions for Russia's invasion of Ukraine had started piling up, not so very coincidentally). Post USSR, they've always viewed the IT biz in general as one of the safer bets from Russia's thuggish ""law"" enforcement system due to the relative ease of keeping the registration and necessary assets abroad while benefitting from the cheaper local workforce. 2014 accelerated that trend tremendously, and that's how numerous ventures came to tapping Russian grey/dirty money, 110 Industries (with the staff of like a dozen people) waging literal tens of millions of dollars taken largely from local oil & gas oligarchs by February 2022. Kolobashkin was the main creative force of the company responsible both for conceptualizing the projects (brewing three or four of those for years, Wanted: Dead being the only one to break into full development) and attracting investments due to his supposed all encompassing game industry experience. The latter has been under scrutiny since 2020 investors presentation leak to Russian media, where 110 Industries claimed to have been involved in a number of very well known projects, from Hitman 2 to Hellblade to Artifact - with several cases being labelled as categorically false by people/companies responsible for their development. Kolobashkin denied the files' authenticity, however by that time he'd already referred to Artifact and Raiders of the Broken Planet/Spacelords as initially 'his developments' in 2019. That interview, or rather a ten part "gaming industry insides" video thing is pretty bonkers tbh. Basically it's a paywalled pile of several Kolobashkin's free form rambles over the hookah, produced & hosted by a long time Russian media personality/video games critic turned video producer Anton Logvinov, a somewhat volatile and icky figure even among some of his own audience. His rep aside, he may have been an undisclosed employee/contractor/partner at 110 Industries at the time, referring publicly to the company as his 'colleagues' - a description he's never elaborated on neither while recording Kolobashkin "insides" nor after. Btw, a few examples of the wisdom spewed by Sergei in this makeshift talk show, aside from falsely taking credit for other people's work: ✅casually dropping “zhyds” slur towards IO Interactive ‘not because they are Jewish’ but because they didn’t give him the branded t-shirt and a Hitman 2 promo copy; ✅passionately expressing his desire to play as a ‘black Nazi’; ✅spending the “labor unions episode” mostly complaining about LGBTQ+ and women giving feedback ‘harmful’ to developers; ✅routinely and without much prompt falling onto garish tropes (i.e. ‘gay dog groomers’ unwilling to move to seek a job) and derogatories (lots of “tyolki” [tr. cows] towards women). Sooo, yeah 👀
That certainly makes a lot of sense. Totally something I missed when I was reading up on the game. Thank you for pointing it out and I’ll definitely read up on Kolobashkin now. What you’ve shared here certainly makes sense - and now this game’s bizarre tone makes a hell of a lot more sense. Oof. Thank you for watching
