Vertigo Throttle Body Clean Out - dies, poor idle

    Considering to buy a 2022 nitro, this doesn’t encourage me, makes me think of the simplicity of carbs, no elect, no frills bikes…

      @@miro_s I , depsite using filter rim grease around sealing areas and plenty of filter oil in filter, still got some dust buuld up on my KTM and needed tp clean the carb once a year too. I also had the same issues on my 2019 Scorpa 300 Factory, 2016 Scorpa 300, and my Beta... heck as much as I liked my Beta that filter was always dirty and needing clean, and yes again there was still dust in its carb too, despite weekly cleanings. Never liked seeing it on any motorcycle, but it happens. This is a simple job and can be done in 30 minutes or so. One thing I have found that helps on the Vertigo design is added a small amount of filter oil, or preferably filter grease, to the sealing angle on the airfilter cage where it engages with the intake manifold. I also use a TINY bit where the manifold slips over the TB. This helps reinforce the sealing in those areas. I got my Vertigo in 2020. Having test ridden most other brands, having owned a few sherco/scorpas and a Beta and now my Vertigo.... I wouldnt personally go back to a carb. My wife liked my Vertigo so much she got one of her own as well. Now that said if you know carbs really well and dont have any desire to learn something new( and most likely were other brands are heading too in the next few years) stick with a carbed bike as long as you can. Most of us all know how to adjust a carb and how to trouble shoot the old bikes easily enough. I really do like efi, i like my bike running consistently no matter the weather, I like the way EFI feels compared to a carb when it comes to power delivery. Getting on the Vertigo it wasnt something I noticed, but going back to a carb it was something I instantly noticed was missing, and was missed. Anyway to each their own, all the modern bikes are pretty freaking killer 🙂

      @@shawnmcginnis2508 thanks a lot for the kind reply. I’m definitely not against injection, on the contrary. I was just referring to how laborious it looks to remove the throttle body on the vertigo vs the carb on a simpler bike (eg my very old sherco st). Anyway I’m mulling over a 22 nitro 300 and a 21 gasgas txt 250 and can’t make up my mind 🤷‍♂️. From what you write I suppose you’d go for the nitro…

      @@miro_s that depends on location, ,attitude ( not ment in an offensive way), and what you value performance wise. If you're close to a vertigo dealer I'd pick Vertigo. If you arent, the newer GasGas are really nice bikes, heck even the older ones I've ridden are great. Short explination. 2021 (R3 and older Vertigo and personally I'd only reccomend a 2020-2021 R2,R3, or DL or 2024 and newer) due to tps resetablity. The 2024 "factory" lets you reset the tps on your own and should be that way on all their bikes going forward. 2017-2021 you can get the wifi unit and do the same. Inbetween would be dealer only and thats a no go for me as I live in northern Indiana and there's nobody around here. I can only say I love my R2 300 and my wife loves her R2 250. Like any brand there are some flaws, but for me, what they offer is worth the trade off for their particuar flaws. Ymmv... If you'd like to know more about what I'ce experience with mine I'd he happy to share in more detial..otherwise best of luck and I hope you really enjoy whatever your next bike is 🙂

    Agreed. In the old days 1960s this is how we did it. We ordinary folk had to modify old street bikes. Geared down a LOT more than one tooth to the point where it could climb a brick wall just about. Most importantly the low gearing gave enormous leverage without wheel spin. Why do we think 4x4s have low range?

  • @sakkekvist2495
    @sakkekvist2495 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    It feels like this is trying to avoid learning one of the most important skills in trial riding, the use of the clutch. You don't need the clutch when riding in a low gear, but mastering the use of the clutch significantly improves your riding and is also a safety factor. But it all ultimately comes down to what you want from trial riding. The easiest path is not always the best path to learn.

    @montesamapping 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    With Montesa if you have 290cc to 300cc engine my suggestion is to change chain wheel from std 41 teeths to 39, in this way 1st gear is more usable and 2nd/3rd have longer range on ramps. With my 260, even if hardly powered by my remapping, I think standard 41 chain wheel is the better solution. Generally having shorter gearing only means using one gear more for obstacles right for the previous gear... and finally means loosing use of first gear.

    I've found The Zap can be done without popping the clutch. Drive the front wheel approximately 2/3 up the obstacle, suspension compresses, hit the throttle hard while jumping up. The rear wheel still lifts and this eliminates the hardest part of the timing issue, the clutch. Can be totally done without popping the clutch and this can get you up some very large undercut ledges.

I've done UK national events on 200's and even a 125, I found the higher standard of sections the extra grunt helped Trials is at many levels more about technique power and speed are secondary

  • @PNW_Trials_Adventures

    Because my bike is primarily used for woods riding and secondarily for trials events, I went 300 and don't regret it, it has the power I need to pull steep hills in high gears, but since it has the low compression head and Dellorto carb, it's a little tamer than most of the 300s, so it never feels like it's getting away from me when riding trials sections. For most adults riding trials, a 250 will absolutely do everything they need it to.

    Great interview! Ray is very knowledgeable. All I've had are 300s mainly due to availability in the resale market. My wife had a 125 Beta evo and I definitely felt it was more work to manage developing the power. (A great skill to develop) Its so true theres a sweet spot for mortals like me. However, Im learning to manage the 300 (now on a TRS) and to me it isn't too difficult to ride in the low RPMs where I spend 90% of my time. Do I use the upper end power? Almost never, it has way more than power I'll ever need but my point is it's still really fun and to me manageable with some clutch and throttle control. Almost opposite of a 125 in a way. I even bought a slow throttle tube but haven't installed it. The TRS is just awesome and electric start saves me a bit if energy. Im super happy with it and to me it feels forgiving and controllable. What does Ray say about electric trials bikes like the EM and the nearly infinite ajustability of mapping all in one machine?

    I just started on trials a couple months ago, I wanted something forgiving that could help me learn the basic stuff and see if I really liked the sport. I was lucky enough to find a lightly used Sherco Classic YT125 4T, they already had put the 200cc cylinder and the gearing is super tall on it but it is still a 4 stroke so still mellow and really makes you work on the revs to draw any power out of it. Which is great! As Ray said, with a low cc bike I am really learning how to work the clutch and throttle and getting familiar on what revving the engine feels like without the fear of shooting bike away from me. So far I'm not doing any big obstacles, so we'll see how the bike holds up when I get there... but it's definitely gonna take me a while

    I ride Beta 250 Evo standard 2023. It is pobably most forgiving trials bike that exists. It was surprising to hear that 250 factory is hardest to ride. Few mates in our club have those. What I like about standart 250 is smooth power delivery. Very predictable clutch engagement. Very easy to start. Cons - plastic front mudguard - brakes quite easily and is expensive. Same goes for the rear tail. 50+ € for the front and 120+€ for the rear. Both break quite easily. Good looking design but bad and expensive for the rider material choice. I respect Ray a lot. However, I totally disagree with him on the 250 Factory Beta. I've owned the standard model and 2 of the Factory 250s. I ride Clubman/ Adv Amatuer and I LOVE the 250 Factory engine. I found it very smooth in it's power delivery and it has all the power you'd ever need unless you think you can compete with Pat Smage. That being said, the 250 Standard was very easy to adapt to as well. I ride TRS 250 ONE R now and love it.

    Excellent interview. Thanks for getting to the chance to pick Rays thoughts. May have missed his standard comment that it's not the bike but the rider that wins the day as evidenced by his success on an 80cc bike.

    Learn to ride on an old Honda Reflex in my 20s (barely at trials bike). Love your comment "The best trials bike is the one you own and go ride" is a great statement. I've had many bikes since but I was hooked after getting that Reflex.
