Game Dev Failure
มุมมอง 17K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Don't give up. The purpose of failure is to reorient ourselves to the reality of the world and continue on. Believe that you have the capability of progressing toward your goals, and over time you will. Even if the road has a few bumps along the way. This is a recounting of my experience releasing an indie game on steam and mobile platforms called air star. I learned a lot from making this proj...
How Long Does It Actually Take?
มุมมอง 4.6K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
*at least one hour (usually) goes into making a game. Lots of game developers test their skills, whether in a game jam format or a self imposed challenge. In this video I set out to make a game in only 1 hour, and to add to the challenge I then have to finish the game and release it. (i need it to feel somewhat complete) It took me about 6-7 hours total from art to code to publishing. Join me a...

This is a decently thorough look through all of the game projects I've ever been a part of. From when I was 14 just poking around in Game Maker, to college and onward, releasing commercial projects with Unity and Godot, the entire journey is here. I hope that this video can be inspiring to those who may not know where to start and insightful for those also doing anything creatively demanding. T...

6:45 Thats cute
thanks haha
I’ve been trying to make a horror game for the past ehhh year or so, but I keep getting stuck on it lol. I gotta make a huuuuge map with a ton of rooms and then figure out puzzles and scenarios for each of them and there’s just kinda no way to speed up that process. Tbh, I think I probably should make a bunch of test rooms to just to experiment with mechanics, but at the same time I just want the map done so I can focus on the writing and artsy stuff already aaa XD. Really cool video tho! Your games give me a nice arcade-y vibe :)!!!
feel ya there on the ordering / process struggle. Its all gotta come together at once but also can't haha. I wish ya luck!
i love the graphics so much
its good to breathe from time to time
watch on 2 times speed for a more concise experience
I think the literal sun is behind you!
ahhh
Cool style
thank you!
W game
thank you!
nice
thanks senor fish 4600
Love the style!
i have a shit pc. gimme the game now
also slide me that feedback Q&A or the template you used 👀
i built the sheet template its pretty easy on google sheets you got that
the game immediately closes itself after launching here unfortunately :/
Now that I think about it, this kind of reminds me of lego rock raiders.
highest praise
Looks cool. The isometric view and the bombs reminds me of Bomberman. I really like the style of the ambient music. Very spelunky. Out of curiosity, what engine/framework did you use to make this?
thanks! its made in godot with c#
@@dogma.questlog Ah nice. The god dot. I messed around with it some recently, but for the life of me I couldn't make it through the tutorial I was working along with. It just didn't hold my attention. (It was a 14 hour tutorial too. Ugh.) Really good stuff for a year of dev. Interesting aesthetic, kinda reminds me of some of the older PS games I would play. Especially Azure Dreams.
thanks!, and yea that's fair thats a long tutorial haha. I'll have to check out Azure Dreams
Damn

hype
Thanks man, i desperately needed this, ive been down so hard about making my game, i havent even started nor do i know how or have the urge to make at all. itll be difficult to be back into the art or game dev... but this helped dude, Thanks
feel that! you got it
im also in uni for game design but i feel like im not learning anything i need to succeed and i feel like im super behind :( im 21 and graduate in 2026 so i have time, but i feel like its too late to start even tho ik it never is. do you have any advice on how to start and specifically how to meet ppl who also wanna do game design as a career? I'm also worried I won't be able to make money as one... super super nervous
you might feel behind for all of time, (I feel behind too) but that is no reason not to start / keep progressing. (and you aren't behind!) In terms of meeting people you can find discords, or forums online i'd recommend game jams as a good way to collab and meet people with similar interest, or there are plenty of game dev meetups in person if you can find those, or start a club at uni people might join in terms of career, games jobs are competitive to get, but that being said, the games entertainment industry has a huge huge huge market cap and games make a lot of money, and they need people to make the games. I'd recommend trying to get your foot in the door doing an internship (try to get a paid one) or QA (quality assurance) at a bigger studio and connect with people there. Best way I've found to get contacts is by cold emailing the hr people or art directors or lead designers after you apply, just to mention how interested you are in the job and if there is anything you can do further. thanks for sharing your thoughts, if you like what you do, stick with it!
yo , just saw you really see the comments I am making a free coop cartoonish fps game but wanted more people to try it how do I get people to know about my game I have a discord server with about 30 real members the first playtest was before yesterday , was a lot of fun , about 6 people joined in the same game how do I keep the server alive (knowing that the game takes time for updates) and get more people
good question, I am going through a similar process myself. I think something that can help if keeping people involved in development, whether that is putting out a note about what you are working on even if it isn't "the new update is ready". And even asking questions about what people think about certain ideas. You still have to decide yourself and trust your gut, but the discussion may be engaging and people may stay excited about the ideas. I don't have to much to say because this is something I'm working through as well! Good luck!
Awesome!!!
thank you!
## Thanks for the inspiration <3
yo thank you for watching!
I released my first ever coding project/game on steam (it’s called “NugQuest”) for free a little over a month ago. I was shocked that I was able to hit the “10 review” threshold and get a public rating. It honestly gave me the motivation/confidence to work on serious projects, and to start a game studio. So that’s what I’m working on right now 😁 Videos like yours keep me going. Thank you.
Get Apple is extraordinarily beautiful
thank you.
I was literally crushed when you said it took less than 2 weeks to complete my dream product similar to "Grotto" this esthetic, psx style rendering, and the simplicity.. Ive been trying to figure out how to tackle for about 4 months
a lot of it relies on prior knowledge and additionally things that already exist (zelda, etc.) I think it is a small slice of a game and a bigger project with more ambition would definitely take more time! don't beat yourself up for it. Part of design and creation is the journey and it is all useful in some way or another, don't worry about timing too much
Friends if pixel art is too hard, just learn 3d modeling and render it to pixel art! Sounds hard but actually I'm dumb asf and can do it, and i make games! If u never done any coding, look at scratch or construct 3 and figure out how to get a square to move, then you'll understand the basic concepts and can move on to engines or just programming in general, gl ❤❤
your vocal fry is very hard to listen to
thanks!
do you normally make the 3d models for your games? or do you get them from the asset store of unity or something like that. those are all really cool games!
thanks for watching and for the question, I try to make all the models for my projects!
I'll take mid any day! ;)
haha thanks for checking it out, loved your java rpg vid, and dewdrop is looking clean!
This video is great
thank you!
is 20 old to start
I don't think so, I think i really started taking it seriously when i was 19 and I still have a lot to learn at 25. I think you can learn a lot if you apply yourself and you can have lots of fun if you keep projects small and work your way towards larger things slowly. I think any time is a good time to start. Additionally, you probably have only lived a quarter of your life or something similar. you have hopefully at least 3 more times that to do whatever you want. Think of being a baby till now, and think of what you could accomplish with another 20 years!
@@dogma.questlog I am trying to build 3d combat / card activated games, like an animated 3d yugioh for example. What’s a few small projects you would recommend for building up to building a real game? I have some ideas but would love to hear your input
I think some smaller card type games would eb good, even recreating a normal deck of cards to understand card structure and data, that kinda deal. As for the 3d thing, just getting 3d models in engine and animating would be good! I don't know what if any experience you have but always start super simple and often recreating things that already exist is a good refereence. Like make your own solitaire or something like that, make a game with multiple card hands, etc. I you need online, work on small online projects just to move things around or exchange data to get the hang of it
Yeah, this is based
I started a couple of times trying to make games, and each time, I would hit a roadblock and ultimately stop. I have recently started trying again, but with a different mindset. I am not really aiming to start by making the game I want to make, but just making tiny games with a single attribute to the overall game. Also, I just started a course so that it is more structured and I am able to ask people in real time.
good plan, definitely helps to keep scope small and having some others along the way to keep you accountable and inspired is always a plus, good luck!
you have some good taste even from early on.
thank you!
I just want to play Get Apple so bad
I'm going to have to make a spiritual successor

Great video! Loved the music too, is there anywhere to find it?
thank you! As for the music, not at the moment but I may make a soundcloud and post it there, or post some of the OSTs on the dogma Quest trailer channel soon. If I do I'll put up a community post or I'll respond to this again. Thanks for watching
@@dogma.questlog Thanks! I am proud of you man!
Imagine if we didn't have internet or tv but only crystal balls and had to deal with the warped view
that'd be funny, It'd be cool if it was crystal ball but a 3d like hologram thing instead of a flat image
8:22 that frog is so cool!
yo thank you!
damn, you had me sweatin' in the first half lmao, & then i called my mom in celebration, only to lose in double overtime 😂😂😂
hahaha, thanks for checking it out lol, Super cool vids dude!
making games is very hard for me cause my art skills lack
that's fair, getting assets that are premade can help and in general for art I think the best way to practice is to draw a ton, you'll learn skills applicable to pixel art, 3d modelling, etc. all from drawing.
gnarly
thanks chunksss
Hey, have you considered adding different biomes to break up the brown earth. For me personally one or two more sets of variation would earn my wishlist.
yea! there will be different layers of the cave all with different enemies and biome types, but additionally, I'd like to add per area variation like you mentioned, I definitely agree it all looks a bit same-y at the moment, appreciate the feedback!
@@dogma.questlog Wishlisting now :)
thank you!
This just made me realize i failed my life
nah not true, you've done a bunch of other stuff that is worthwhile too. and if you really are dissatisfied there is always today to start something new. you got it
I've been around a long time and I love seeing this level of dedication and your ability to see things through to the end. Amazing work!
thank you, and thanks for watching!
I’d play that ghost game
Sorry to leave a second comment, but I would love some videos explaining the methods you use to achieve pixelated 3d art styles so effectively such as in c-gobON and grotto
Really nice video. I'm currently doing game dev in a lot of my free time, and one issue I have is having trouble following through on ideas due to picking one of excessive scale/scope. Sometimes I work on a project for weeks before realizing this. But I'm learning a lot, and many of the components I have built have applications across a lot of game types. Fun video and it's encouraging stuff. Any advice on defining scope such that you can actually finish a project?
I struggke with it too, I tjink it's definitely something you learn over time, but I would say making a design document can help. Try to outline the main mechanics and what you want from them before you start coding or making art. You can plan certain things in or cut stuff if it's too much all on paper.
Overall, you just got to do it. Its hard but if it was easy everyone would be making games.
agreed
