First time out on a junk rigged Michalak Mikesboat
I’ve always been interested in Jim Michalak’s Mikesboat. When I stumbled upon an ad for this junk rigged Mikesboat with Everglades Challenge experience, I had to jump. First time out here. With five passengers! I didn’t take a lot of footage, but I managed to edit it into this little video. Enjoy!

Rowing a duck punt over oyster reefs in Copahee Sound

Towards the end of a beautiful sail on Copahee Sound, the wind let up and I towed the last mile or so back to the landing. Duck punts are famous for their shallow water sailing abilities. I haven’t seen many videos that focus on their rowing ability. I set up my Insta360 X3 camera about four feet over the stern. Here you can see the boat rows pretty well. It doesn’t track as well as some, but i...

Choppy sail on the Wando River in a Michalak Piccup Pram

A couple hours bouncing around on the Wando River by Daniel Island near Charleston, SC. The wind was forecast 5-10 and fading, but it was at least 10-15 for the entire sail. I took a nice sail on my Michalak Piccup Pram after work on the Ashley River in Charleston, South Carolina. The forecast was for 10-15 knots of breeze gusting to 20. You can't really row it, but I'm thinking you could put an electric engine on it, either on a mount off the stern or build a motor well somewhere. You could have two batterries, one up front and one in the stern. Then you could even have solar panels on it to charge the batteries.

    Hey, Sean. This video randomly popped up on my screen, and I immediately watched it because Bobcat is one of my favorite Bolger designs. (In my opinion, it's also one of his best.) I'm pleased and proud that I knew Phil back in the day and actually sailed with him off South Thomaston, Maine, in a catamaran that he designed and Dynamite Payson built. Phil was certainly an eccentric, but his design work bordered on genius. I glanced at some of the other videos on your channel, and this left me wondering where you get all these wonderful small boats. Do you, yourself, build some of them? If so, I think documenting the process (WITHOUT speeding up the footage, please!) would be a great addition to your channel. Just a thought, Chris

      Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate for another sail this past weekend. We actually had six aboard here. It’s going to be interesting to see if it feels any different sailing solo. One nice thing about the junk is how quick and easy it is to reef. Surprisingly easy and uncomplicated to rig, too! • @seanmccambridge
      @seanmccambridge 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I really, really depends on conditions. I think one adult, one toddler would be a lot like sailing solo. I've heard you can take two adults, but I've never seen it and wouldn't myself. Sounds like you need to build two boats, lol. And honestly building two wouldn't be much more effort than one if you have the space.

    • @ArtworkAnon

      dang. I will tell you what I'm really interested in doing. I want a landing craft for my Bolger Idaho. I would really like something like a little sailing pram, that could accommodate 2 adults, that would fit on my Bolger Idaho's roof. All of the small light ones say that two adults under sail is tight. It would just be awesome to pull up on a mooring ball for the night and go cruise around together by sail... @@seanmccambridge

      It's really a one man boat; also one thing you learn about being a boatbuilder and sailor is that it's hard to get people to come along. They don't want to be "trapped" on a boat and also in this world of low-brow instant gratification it's too slow, not fast or exciting enough like a stinky, loud, CO2 emitting powerboat.

      @@user-th3ll8rl7i It's definitely a one or two man boat. I've been out with a full-sized adult and we didn't feel cramped at all. It is even easier to sail with the low "live" ballast.

    • @piergaay
      @piergaay 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@seanmccambridgeThe Piccup Pram isnt riven by an optimist sail, but in the Piccup Pram you can mess around with boats like a child does in an Optimist; you are right about that! Besides that, I am looking at that design for some for a while. It is time to buy those plans for it and build one . . . thanks for the video!

    • @seanmccambridge
      @seanmccambridge 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@piergaay I think you’ll find the boats take their character and capabilities from their hull shape rather than their sail. The duck punt can sail in 6” of water and go where other boats can’t because it has no centerboard or keel. It gets scary in any chop and especially boat wakes. The Piccup Pram on the other hand is much more capable and has sailed e.g. the Texas 200 in 35+ kts and open water while providing ample room b/c of its leeboard. Both are great little boats for their niche.

    What is a good small boat like this that you can also row?

    • @seanmccambridge
      @seanmccambridge ปีที่แล้ว

      There are many. It depends on the other variables you're looking for. What ratio of row:sail? How many people? What kind of waters (protected/open/ocean)? Are you camping or just daysailing? Etc. If you're on Facebook, I'd recommend the Duckworks group and the Wooden Boat Forum group. Lots of opinions there, many of them good ones. A few boats top of mind: I own a Jim Michalak designed Piccup Pram. It's small at 11'. But it's a big, stout 11'-er that can sail in some pretty dangerous conditions. It rows okay, but I only row when the wind dies or when I need to manuever somewhere I can't sail. Bonus: it slides into the back of my pickup truck! Great little boat for one or two people. But it's not intended to go that fast (maybe 4 kts most of the time). It is very chill and relaxing. Another boat is Michael Storer's Goat Island Skiff. This, however, is bigger at 16', faster and much more exciting to sail. Much greater risk of capsizing. But also much greater chance of getting up on a plane and going really fast. Also rows okay, faster rower than the pram but also more effort. If you're looking for a Bolger boat -- there are so many -- I don't really know which ones are good row/sail combos. Also check out John Welsfords boats and Ross Lillistone's. Not meaning to forget any great designers here, but for homebuilt plywood boats, these are top of mind for me. Good luck!
