people seem to get a lot out of these little boats as they fly along quite comfortably on a broad reach or a run

They’re great little boats. Don’t expect to go 30° off the wind. But a properly tuned lug rig will go along nicely on most points of sail.

How you doing, my name is Rickey Hawkins and I need some help please. I built a piccup pram with a balanced lug sail and I'm 70 years old and never sailed before and I can't find any instruction videos on how to sail her. Your video here is the most recent one I've seen so I'm asking you for help please.

Just saw your comment. I can try to make a video about rigging my Piccup. It might not be exactly how Jim had it specified. But it's a combination of working with what the builder made and what I've learned about lug rigs, mostly from Michael Storer.

What's the background to the name Piccup Pram?

The designer, Jim Michalak, said, “I designed it to be the best sail/row boat I could put in the back of my short bed pick up truck. But I found it to be a good cartopper, too. It has capacity and abilities I had previously thought impossible in a 90 pound cartopper.” www.jimsboats.com/15nov21.htm

Love the interaction in the middle. “You didn’t make that did ya!?”
I get that all the time. I wish I could say “yes! “
Think you could do two toddlers and two adults in this? Sailing?

I really, really depends on conditions. I think one adult, one toddler would be a lot like sailing solo. I've heard you can take two adults, but I've never seen it and wouldn't myself. Sounds like you need to build two boats, lol. And honestly building two wouldn't be much more effort than one if you have the space.

dang. I will tell you what I'm really interested in doing. I want a landing craft for my Bolger Idaho. I would really like something like a little sailing pram, that could accommodate 2 adults, that would fit on my Bolger Idaho's roof. All of the small light ones say that two adults under sail is tight. It would just be awesome to pull up on a mooring ball for the night and go cruise around together by sail... @@seanmccambridge

It's really a one man boat; also one thing you learn about being a boatbuilder and sailor is that it's hard to get people to come along. They don't want to be "trapped" on a boat and also in this world of low-brow instant gratification it's too slow, not fast or exciting enough like a stinky, loud, CO2 emitting powerboat.

This boat is shockingly capable. I've had it out with about 500 lbs load and it sails and rows just fine.

@@user-th3ll8rl7i It's definitely a one or two man boat. I've been out with a full-sized adult and we didn't feel cramped at all. It is even easier to sail with the low "live" ballast.
