My kids got me into thrifting. Clothing, furniture, appliances ø. So much good stuff out there if you are a bit patient.

I've noticed my typebars get slower after I've cleaned it. At first I had 1-2 typebars that got stuck at the ribbon, now it's a lot.

Price is a HUGE deterrent. Giving people the benefit of the doubt, I'll call this type of seller "uninformed" as opposed to "greedy." It's not just typewriters either; a plethora of hobbies have been hit by resellers who look at SALE price vs SOLD price. Selling your AWFUL condition, non-working Hermes 3000 for $600 because you see other people listing theirs for similar. It's frustrating. I see it in records quite often. Shops selling scratched-up no-sleeve records for $20 because that's what someone else has them for on eBay. Look at past sales, Bob. Ugh

Hi there, I'm looking to buy a typewriter. There is one on my local FB market place that is titled: Smith Corona Classic Typwritter. Do you know anything about the classic series? It says classic on the front right of it and has 3 diamond looking shapes on the front left of it. Looking to buy my first typewriter so not sure if this is a good one or not with a nice typing experience. Any advice would help. Thanks.

Went to get a Student 300T, which I suspect is a Brother brand typewriter. It looked it, anyway, the seller had two and the other was a Triumph TippaS, for the same price. I went with that one. It's just more vintage looking while still fully functional.

Consul's have always been interesting to me. Their designs are always distinctive and they have never copied foreign models, they also have distinctive color combinations and two key designs, which makes them stand out against the background of German brands that usually rely on the same design for certain elements and it continues to be repeated in many models such as the distinctive shape of the Olympia keys. Consul use this key design for the larger models such as the 1511 and the largest 1504, which is a real monster in terms of the amount of metal put into it. I also don't know of license produced Consul models, while Olympia had a Yugoslavian license production of the Traveler model, as well as Erika have a Yugoslavian copy of the Model 10 under the Biser brand. The Russians license the Erika 100 under the name Lyubava, as does the electric giant Olympia SGE as Yatran. We in Bulgaria have had very strong relations with Privileg, Triumph-Adler also copy the Privileg 160, so everything is a merry-go-round of models and brands. Consul is different, Consul is Consul, always produced only in Czechoslovakia and always distinctive in some way.

I've typed thousands of pages on my Royal manual over 45 years, and the machine was likely twenty years old before I bought it. I use it daily. The platen is pretty much worn out and the bell doesn't work anymore (local service man passed away so there's no fixing it), but it keeps on keeping on. These are extraordinary machines, and little kids love them! Pushing a key and watching the arm rise and make a print on paper delights them.

Can you speak more at all about identifying mould on a typewriter? The photo looks almost like a bit of spray paint on the keys (is that where I’m supposed to be looking? The green fuzzy below looks like it might be the inside of the case?) The reason I ask is that I just picked up a mechanical typewriter which looks like it might’ve sat in a garage for a while; inside it looks like maybe at some point someone might have used white spray paint nearby, but now I’m vaguely concerned I’m just not seeing it as mould. When I turned it on I get a metallic/oily smell, and unfortunately the keys aren’t engaging anything other than the Tab. (It’s an inelegant Smith Corona Vantage model, but I’ve never seen a typewriter for sale below 150$ so I grabbed this one when I saw it to see if I’d even end up using it… So far, since I can’t get the keys to depress the mechanism though, it might be a dud. 😢 But regardless, if there’s any risk of mould I’d love to be able to deal with that!) It’s so incredibly kind of you to drive all the way to deliver your typewriter to its buyer! I imagine in the end you might not have made much income based on your time and effort and gas money - but you certainly will have made several people’s day!! Thanks for sharing all that you do on this channel! It’s a wealth of knowledge and I’m looking forward to learning more and more!

"Glowing" under black light would actually be said to be "fluorescing." Balloons are fun, but not widely applicable. The Jane Austin looks like a cheap Barnes and Noble public domain reprint. It might make an interesting subject for a bookbinding project. Just saying.

The reason for uranium glass glowing, is because UV light reacts with the electrons in the glass and that causes visible light to be emitted. The glass itself is slightly radioactive and sometimes people think that is the cause, but it's not.

Thrift stores are also great for photo printing paper!

I have been recently collecting uranium glass, and I could tell from the sheen on the sherbet cup that it was uranium glass - so glad you got it. It’s an amazing piece!

The green glows because its radioactive with Uranium we have a large collection of uranium glass. Should be safe but wouldn’t really eat/drink with them.

Green glass. Glows in the dark. 1930s. Will be caused by uranium. So slightly radioactive, best not eat out of it then. Uranium was seen as healthy and good for you, so you could get all manner of radioactive stuff back then. Fun to have. Just don’t use them for anything more than display.

CorningWare, Pyrex, and Corelle were/are all made by the same company - Corning Glass Works. Quite a few of the patterns from the 60s and 70s were used on both Pyrex and Corelle, Pyrex being kitchenware and Corelle being the companion tableware

I found a Super Sterling in a garbage dump and fixed the bent linkages underneath, and I got a working typewriter.

The problem is not one model or brand. The problem is ALL, and I repeat all, the portable and semi-portable machines. They are junk. If you want a typewriter that works, you got to get a full size desktop. Just pickup a portable then pickup a desktop. Surely you can feel the difference. Type on both. You can feel that difference as well. The portable was made to sell and to be rarely used. The desktop was made to be used 8 hours a day, everyday!!! Yeah, you can get to town in a compact car, but a Lincoln Continental sure does ride and drive better ;) If you type much, soon the portables will go to the closet and that full sized will sit on your desk :) That is a fact, yes Sir yes Mam!!
