    I mean to my mind the easiest way to balance the south is to add a bridge between NAF and SPA such that Italy can actually pressure france outside of the eternal mar pie deadlock or the suicidial lyo/ wes manoeuvres (that tend to get Italy murdered by the ascended eastern power (unless it’s them!)

  • @gsh5900

    Really, the problem with france being as OP as it is now, lies partly in the geography, which moving the Spanish SC to Naf might fix, but also partly in the meta: Why does England almost never open to the Channel? I think some rethinking of the Anglo-French relationship ought to be considered.

    For minor map changes to slightly nerf France, might I suggest splitting MAO with a separate Bay of Biscay tile (between ENG, Bre, Gas, and Spa NC), such that France no longer directly borders MAO?

    • @DiploStrats
      @DiploStrats 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Which tiles would the *new* MAO border? I'm worried about this idea b/c I fear it will make it even less appealing to attack France.

    • @yaitz3313

      @@DiploStratsMy thought was that the new MAO would border all the sea tiles, Spain NC, Portugal, and North Africa. Imagine a line drawn from somewhere along the ENG/MAO border down to Spain NC. That would put France at the same distance from MAO that Britain is. You're worried that would make the new Bay of Biscay into something like what Heligoland is to Germany?

      I've always wanted a map where Spain was somehow split so that it didn't have a north coast and a south coast only because of the weird "unintuitive to real life" ramifications of say, a unit in Gascony being able to help a move from WMS-Spa (sc). Same goes for StP and Bul.

      @DiploStrats I know it *can*, I'm just saying it's unintuitive from a "real world" point of view. You know of anything that could lob artillery that far that existed 1901? (This is not a complaint, I've just always wondered what a dip map with no split coast territories would play like.)

      I think the fact that some countries are unbalanced honestly gives the game more charm and makes it more fun. It means you need to approach every relationship differently. It should really be on players to play a more anti-France meta. I think one of the travesties in modern day diplomacy is the fact that France isn’t treated more like Turkey.

    • @yaitz3313
      @yaitz3313 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@PhilTheThrill87Hasn't that been discussed on DiploStrats before? They said the problem with that is that France is way harder to attack early on than Turkey is, and so it's less rewarding and takes more sacrificing potential growth by other players.

    • @PhilTheThrill87
      @PhilTheThrill87 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@yaitz3313 I’d honestly say a well coordinated EG can attack France just as well as an AI/AIR can attack Turkey. Especially if Italy is on board. France and Turkey are both defensive corner powers, it’s obviously not going to be easy to crack them early on, but that’s kinda the reason it needs to be done a lot of the time

      I probably didn't explain my point well here: You want to trust people as much as you possibly can, without getting stabbed. That is the way to get the most value out of every relationship. If you are *never* getting stabbed, it means you're probably not playing in a way that gives other people the opportunity to stab you, and you're probably struggling to make alliances in general. The idea is that you're never going to be perfect at trusting every individual player in every situation, so if you *never* get stabbed you're probably way too far on the untrusting side of the spectrum.

    Hello hello! Turkey here, finally back to gaze upon the barren wasteland my country has become after taking a bit of time to collect my thoughts. This was my first tournament experience, and it was a blast. No idea how i managed to qualify to the final and i doubt that i should've, but hey, i got there, so i may have done something right! Don't think i have much to talk about in the final game itself, so let me give y'all a few key lessons i am gonna be taking away with myself from this. 1) Talk. Talk, talk, talk, talk, talk. Talk with everyone you can and can't get your hands on (more on that later). If you are not talking with someone, chances are they are gonna be talking about you. Most of the finals i was sitting alone (more on that later), most of the semis i was talking, the difference was a bit staggering. You have nothing to talk about? Does not matter. They could be having ideas to showcase to you. Heck, i'll highlight it. a) If you see someone alone, go chat them up! Goodwill goes a long way, be it trying to console a dying Turkey on the other side of the map or helping to solve tech issues for Bradley while nothing else is happening. Be a human! It's much harder to stab a human than a nebulous noone you haven't talked to during the game. The best defence is a line of units. The second best defence is all the emotional damage you can force them to take by stabbing you. 2) Politeness has a limit. I was too polite. At least, that's the biggest reason i can come up with for getting dismantled so rapidly that is focused inward. The easiest way to point it out is a mathematical truth bomb. Seven is not an even number. Seven does not divide by two evenly. THERE WILL BE SOMEONE LEFT ALONE. DO NOT BE THE ONE LEFT ALONE. ESPECIALLY NOT WHEN ALL YOUR NEIGHBOURS ARE CHATTING EACH OTHER UP IN A CIRCLE. Butt in! It is ok to butt in. It is expected, really. Most of the conversations i tried to strike up with anyone were interrupted by someone else jumping in with "yo can i chat with X really quick?" And what did i say, the polite dumbass that i am? "Yeah sure *yosh leaves voice channel*" DO NOT STOP THE CHAT UNTIL YOU SAID WHAT YOU WANTED TO SAY! to a limit. We are still polite, after all. here's a magic phrase : "Sure, just give me a minute" Use it. USE IT. A LOT. Don't hog the other person for the entire phase, especially in the phase of the game where everything is in the air. But if they are hard to get your hands on, do not let them go until you've said everything you needed to tell them. NEVER. STAY. ALONE. --- Thanks for the tournament! Here's looking towards getting brutally discombobulated in the third Gauntlet, whenever it may happen.

    i dont know if theyll talk about it later, but coring is like charging a shadow ball in smash bros, it forces the enemy to engage you, here, now, or give you more power.

    Speaking of those dune power I played in that game they were a lot of fun. Had kind of a crazy level of lack of balance and if a meta formed I'm sure it wouldn't be as balanced. But as we were all learning and didn't have it figured out it was a delightfully crazy experience. He got most right. here's what they were and the final postions based on final SC count. 1. After moves can volunteer to retreat any number of units. 2. Once a season support anywhere. 3. Once per year free convoy to anywhere. (Not just sea as etsio suggests) 4. View everyone's orders before making yours. 5. Once a year choose an order for a unit. 6. On build phase can build on enemy unit dislodging it. I was #1 there. I basically took over all 6's centers. Other powers were basically happy for me to do that because I think we all fears the snowball of him building on their supply centers. We all couldn't decide if it was just too weak from that or maybe in another game they snowball better and go nuts. My power was I think slept on a bit initially by myself included, I could move very fast and essentially get a 2nd move that goes after I see your move. Also essentially a minor version of #4 power where if a 50/50 situation happens I could just not move then retreat to where you didn't defend. #2 is very strong. He is a desirable ally and very capable of defending himself or attacking. Probably should change to just a support hold or support attack. both was a little strong every turn. We were basically even the whole game and allied I just was able to grab an extra SC to end with a higher count than him. #3 did alright iirc. His power didn't come up huge. He did use it to enter home SCs of #2 at one point. But as he had support and I had lots of movement we were able to get back and force disband it quickly. His power was oppressive in that you had to have a plan to defend from it so your rear even in a corner didn't feel super safe. But don't think it had as great an impact as others. #4 was on opposite side of map most of game. But they seemed to use it decently well. It wasn't as crazy as you might expect though from my view. #5 was a very strong power and they were decently influential they were just in the center of the board and thus kind of got hit on all sides similar to how austria gets. Interesting idea to give a really strong power to a worse board position. It had a rough final few turns I believe it spent most of the game doing well though. #6 probably had the weakest power, just because they have to already get a win to ever use it. Which no player ever wants to let them do. I don't think they used it once and were the only power to die. Maybe if we played more rounds there would be less initial worry about them.

    I can recommend their discord for first diplomacy games. I joined multiple of their backstabber and it's really fun and easy to join.

    what i took from this as a new player: the two most impactful moves you made here were giving sc's to other players, especially supporting france to munich which had the effect of you annexing the remaining german territory in the wake of their suicide mission

    Ah, yes insinuate: that these questions are per se an aggressive provocation, and our implicit refusal to engage with them is, in contrast, an equivalent act of good grace and decorum. I can totally buy that, since I have no experience with any scenarios where that exact reaction is a laughably transparent alternative to simply lying directly or admitting damaging facts.

    Sweden being a neutral territory until 1904 makes me wonder; what's the latest you've ever seen a territory remain neutral?

    One thing I will note is that, thanks to the staggering of timelines, it's almost impossible to interact with the present of another timeline. This means that there is just an exponentially increasing number of games of Diplomacy that, largely, cannot interact with each other. Perhaps you should implement the present line from 5d chess, and disallow any moves in the future?

      Yeah, the lack of a present time seems to be the most major omission when transferring the concept from chess to diplomacy. It'd probably take a lot of effort to recode, but I think it'd be worth it to make the multiple timelines intertwine more easily.
