Sardinia here. That was correct except for one major thing. I meant to sound, because it is public press, genuine so Spain does it. I was being "so genuine" that you even believed it when in reality I got your wink wink nudge nudge message and understood what to do so I was negotiating "honestly" with Spain to get them to agree. The problem was Bordeaux, who was Italian saying I was stabbing them and they would pull away from Spain, which is the entire reason Spain was offering this deal. Thus I got mad at Meme because I thought if he was telling me to accept this deal wink wink nudge nudge, he ran it by Bordeaux. He did not and got me into a lot of trouble trying to dupe Spain while at the same time convince Bordeaux I am not stabbing in public press.

I will say, the alliances might not be being determined by modern day nations, but instead the way the map is made, encourages nations to form on historical lines. (Because it reflects geographical features that historically united those regions.) Though it’s likely that both reasons play a factor.

    • @jean-henribernard723
      @jean-henribernard723 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      Yes, I agree.
The good example to that is the Franco-Spanish border. Because this map is based on a real world map, there are no centers at the border. Interestingly this acts like the Pyrénées mountains, and prevented any successful invasion from one side to the other.
On the other side, the Balkans are unified even though it is not based on a real empire. Similar, this is due to how much the centers are crowded here.

Hey, Gibraltar/Granada here. I have a few comments on this section of the game that might be interesting to people here:
    1) First, for the 1:06:16 moves. Tunis and Sardinia tried to coordinate against me during the last 10 minutes of the phase by basically agreeing on the support to the Alboran Sea. I knew that if they knew that I saw what they were doing, they were going to change their moves, so I did basically the only strategy that would counter that in this situation, which is I shut up and pretended to be offline. It turns out they did do the thing they discussed, and that worked surprisingly well in these circumstances.
    2) It's such a shame we weren't able to make that Corsican convoy to Barcelona go through. It would've been so awesome if we had gotten Corsica out there. Sadly Madrid probably had to support Porto to A Coruna, because if they don't and Paris goes for it, then our entire position collapses.
    3) On 1:55:35 , Tunis was actually working with the Italians basically until they collapsed because at the beginning of the game, I had tried to go after Tunis with Baleares' support because we didn't really have anywhere else to go. However, this turn, Sardinia and Tunis got into conflict in press because Tunis thought that she was part of the Italian alliance and Sardinia thought she was just allied with the Italians. I don't really remember what how the conflict went exactly, but in short, Sardinia decided that his dying act would be trying to kill Tunis by supporting Berbers in. Berbers, meanwhile, had been generally neutral and just wanted a second center.
As for me, I was in a complicated situation. I knew that if I support Berbers in, it would go through, because Cairo preferred Tunis, but it would still be 3v2. I didn't have anything against either player and both were promising that they would totally 100% be my friend. The main thing pushing me towards Berbers was that I would strongly prefer and army in Tunis over a fleet. However, I ultimately decided to let Tunis live because if Berbers got to 2, everyone was talking about a waive.
And then I regretted my decision immediately because a strong Berbers could probably have done more to contain big Marrakech if we could make that work than a weak Berbers + Tunis. Because of this reason, and some of what would happen later, I think not supporting Berbers there is probably my biggest regret from this game.
    4) Just to reflect on the Morocco stab at 3:06:24 , none of the Spanish were online to counter the stab, but even if we were, it was a tough situation regardless. If we preempt that Marra might do that, then the only real way to counter it is Madrid staying in Madrid. But if Madrid does that, maybe seeing Morocco's plans 5 minutes before the deadline or something, and Morocco stabs anyway, then I think Paris retreats into Navarre instead of disbanding, and then puts pressure on Madrid. And unlike with the Italian alliance, Morocco + France would probably be successful in eating us. What we really needed to do was spot the opportunity earlier in the phase, and have Madrid publicly announce that they are staying in Madrid, and then hopefully that dissuades Marra from stabbing and France still disbands because just France can't make *any* progress.
Overall, I am really liking your commentary! This game was so big, that I didn't really keep track of like half of the map, so it's interesting to see you go over a lot of developments I didn't really know about at all.

    Final Aquitaine/Bordeaux here:
Basically what happened with the fish religion is that we all went into a press break following the Oslo and Spitsbergen subs and Krakow got kinda bored with the lack of chaos due to said break and the stabilization of alliances and asked if anyone wanted to form a religion to add more conflict. Since I just subbed in and was monitoring discord a lot I said sure why not. I asked if they had ideas about what it would be about and they just said fish with no explanation. This is likely cause their name on discord is fish related and my discord profile picture was a shiny Kyogre. Flare then pinged Freiburg aka undercooked fish bringing them into the religion. I then suggested the barrelyeye as a suitable pope and wilno said they would join on the condition that the leaf sheep were made the religion’s cardinals. We all then changed our in game names to be fish related and the religion was born. Luxembourg, Strasbourg, and notably Naples joined as members in the subsequent phases also changing their names.

Actually, Prussia was part of Poland for a time as the Duchy of Prussia. Its why Gdansk and Prussia are on that map drawn with that weird hook: That was the boundary of the duchy. It would be inherited by the Brandenburg Branch of the Hohenzollerns in 1618, but was still legally part of the Kingdom of Poland. It became a de jure independent state only in 1701, when Prussia was recognized as a Kingdom by decree of the Holy Roman Emperor as payment for Brandenburg-Prussian aid in a war with Poland won in the previous year. The catch being that it was Prussia that was made a kingdom, not Brandenburg and therefor the King of Prussia was only King IN Prussia, not in Brandenburg as well.

Berbers here again, just finished the video and wanted to clarify that I was actively negotiating on the side of Tunis until the move where I tried to get support from Gibraltar and Sardinia was dying offering support. From that board it made sense to me to get to two because I could possibly get a third from either Marrakech or Cairo, but it would have really secured my borders.
Also I think I have one more good move left in me for this game, but I especially look forward to seeing the final map of the game to show off my conquests!

Lux: It's not true that I was evasive about what I was going to do. I was very conspicuous about stabbing Kiel. What we were supposed to be doing is working Azores+Kiel+Lux and get some dots from Britain. Kiel was supposed to be supported into London, and I hinted way too heavily to Azores: "Please, do not support Kiel, because I don't want him to survive." Kiel checked out from the game at this point, though, and what tipped him off was that I wasn't pinging him (because I didn't want him to read my extremely conspicuous hints.
I saw how much heat were the Horde and Rabat getting for having three dots, so after I stabbed Kiel for the fourth dot, I made this apologetic post, begging everybody around me not to coalition me, because my Lux dot was on loan, and I wanted to be rid of it ASAP... But then nobody cared, actually. When I realized that, I suggested to Stras that, if he really wants to help Freiburg against those vile traitors Rome and Trieste (aka the Land Italians), he really should be moving to Switzerland, I mean you can take Lux, but you know, that would be tactically really kind of bad...
And then I started thinking to what I was going to be doing next. No way I would be stabbing France or Stras. That's a sure way to be coalitioned. There were the remnants of the Wheel in Bremen and Rostock. Like the Wheel never was officially disbanded, it's just that people weren't appealing to it as an alliance anymore. Bremen and Rostock weren't really calling me for help, but my original plan was still to go and help them against the Vikings. But then Wessex joined the Vikings. This meant that I would have to guard my long coastline with basically all of my units (assuming the Vikings would continue to go smoothly more or less) and would be unable to do much of anything. So... seeing how light the Vikings were on accepting new members, I decided to join them, to have something to do and to not be stuck on the coastal guard duty.
It was a discussion during the game, and it shows through in the commentary, but people approached this game with very different mindsets. It felt to me strongly that many people believed in the alliance victory and were really willing to pass on what was better for them personally to help the alliance as a whole. I believed in that to some extent (even though I did take care of myself) and I believed that many other people believed in that. I didn't seriously consider stabbing Stras, because well then I would be winning purely because I befriended a dodo and then ate him. That felt too cheap.
My plan was literally to hang around dots and wait for a good opportunity. Park my fleets near British shores, send my army to the chaotic east. And then Bordeaux started bothering me: "What's your plan?" I answered honestly, that my plan was helping my allies and see how it goes. Why do I need a 4-year plan for getting new dots? I still had way too many, way too early.
"Lux left the Vikings by building a fleet". That's bull. I'm not building one Viking army to single-handedly attack 4-armies France. That's stupid. Also, I was explicit at every turn when I was joining the Vikings that I won't be stabbing France or Stras. The British job wasn't done yet. There were plenty of naval provinces to occupy in the west. The famed Viking fleets were many, but were taking their time to arrive. I did leave the Vikings, by saying at gunpoint that I was leaving the Vikings, and doing not a single thing detrimental to them, yeah, I totally left.

    Oxfiles part 3:
    We love a good subscribe!
1)Bulblism-Yay I'm a cardinal now! I had really good relations with Mara and was annoyed with less talkative Bumble popes (I.E. people who wouldnt drop what they were doing to come save me from negotiating madness #GBA) and so took the initatives to run the elections and get Mara in charge. As a reward I became a cardinal and worked with Mara to get Meme back into the religion
2)An interesting thing about the British players is that I (and I think the others as well) would just search eachothers messages and read them all which made planned stabs hard except in the last moment, leading to our particular brand of chaos
3)I was working with Ireland and London and would have been happy to work with the vikings, I felt I hadnt done any bad stabbing/chaos for a few years at this point. London stabbed me by building an army. However, that is a build phase stab and like Ezio said, those are very hard to pull off. I was so lucky here and Ireland decided to keep working with me and get their close friend Edinburgh in on it too. I had now forgiven Edinburgh for destroying the GBA I and we had made a GBA II. I also agree with Ezio that if Wessex wanted to stab me they shouldn't have let me into Plymouth (something I was kind of expecting). Or they should have kept working with me, something I really wanted.
4)Because I was now at 2 centers I finally began looking at the rest of the board, negotiating with France (especially new Bordeux) and Luxembourg. I wanted to convoy to the continent and although Wessex's stab delayed that, I did build good relationships here, except for with Luxembourg who was rude. In later phases this became a big fight between myself and Luxembourg, and honestly I may have been over reacting. But the basic truth is we had such different play styles and objectives that even though IRL we probably would get along we seriously butted heads in this game.
5)Anyone notice I have a very similar colour to Luxembourg? Its fine... we're so far from eachother! But at the end of these turns I want to kill Wessex for building me up only to knock me down and Luxembourg for giving me the ick 🤔

I like your videos guys, but is it really necessary to talk for an hour before showing any moves. Surely context and speculation about other parts of the board can happen while moves are on screen

This is a question we're kinda still wrestling with. In a normal commentary we're primarily talking about what we're seeing on the board, so it makes sense to have moves showing at all times - but in this game the vast majority of what we're talking about is negotiation prior to the moves. The moves hadn't happened yet when that was ongoing, and quite often the moves won't match what we're talking about, because people change their mind during a phase.
So it doesn't feel like it makes sense to have the moves up during that time, at least to me. We could feasibly have the previous turn's moves up, but I think that just makes it a bit tougher to tell what we're talking about when we're discussing negotiations because the units won't be in the right places on the map.
This is very much a different format to the usual and anything like that is going to need some experimenting, though.

@@DiploStratsI like what y’all are doing with this one. Giving us a ton of stuff we could never know from the map.

@@DiploStrats Please keep pre-game and blank map explanations. As a viewer, the best part of massive multiplayer diplomacy (MMDiplo: new category??) is the player negotiations because it makes the lead up to betrayals exciting and the reveal more entertaining. Focusing on what is on the visible board fits tournaments and games with fewer players since those typically don't have as many intricate alliances, rivalries or religions.
Zooming in while circling and pointing at the map with the cursor is plenty already.
One option could be drawing or animating suggested moves, but that would be too much time and effort for a non-monetised 3+ -hour video (in my opinion). Especially when it's done about a hobby, which is should be fun for the content creator and viewers.

@@DiploStrats I appreciate you response, and understand your decision, i just end up skipping a lot especially when you seem to be speculating in parts of the board you aren't involved with.
