Field Sparrow - Learn a Bird - Episode #56
In the early morning sun of early summer, Dan shares about the Field Sparrow - aka the "bouncy ball bird"- whose song evokes the image of a ball bouncing on the ground.
..
The Field Sparrow is an open-habitat breeder that makes multiple nests per year in most places - starting in the spring with it's nest actually or practically on the ground. As the greenery comes in, they're able to make a nest in bushes that stay concealed to the preying eyes of nest robbers.
..
Quiz....can you name any birds in the background that might be familiar to you? Guess away...who cares if you don't get it right!
..
I hope you enjoy watching and learning :)

Join Dan Gardoqui on an early morning in June in the Scarborough Marsh near Portland Maine as he scopes the salt pannes for birds busily feeding and preening. ., Dan attaches his phone to his spotting scope to make a "digiscoped" video of wading birds, including: glossy ibis, snowy egret and double-crested cormorants. Note: the video is a little "jumpy" in places...the panning could be a lot sm...

Questionable Shorebird Parenting & "Fall" Bird Migration - Learn a Bird Episode #49

Don't judge, but shorebird parents ditch their young and head south in the summer. It's okay - because shorebird chicks are what we call "precocial" - meaning they're born pretty much ready to move about, feed, etc. While songbirds are "altricial" - meaning they can't fend for themselves for a while after hatching. .. A good bird indeed. I've made friends with the ones near me and now they keep a sentry on the powerline outside my house to watch for food. Three loud caws while circling the area has become the signal for "hey! They left food here!" Then there will be 50+ in my driveway a minute later. I'm leaving them water too hoping they might start bathing in it but so far it's just the social water cooler.

Thanks for mentioning the two calls. I was out in hot garden here in Mississippi, around lunch and heard the second less clicky call. I had a nesting pair around when I was 12 and was very excited to have them. Pretty flimsy nest, about 25 feet up in a long leaf pine, tail sticking out about an inch beyond the nest. I was bummed out tho because as soon as the first egg hatched I got hauled away on a family trip, never got to see them develop. But maybe theres a nest here now, it is exactly the same time of year as back then. Thanks for the video.

Sure! Live classes run from 7-8:30pm four consecutive Monday evenings in July (1, 8, 15, 22)...but you can also watch recordings on your own anytime you like. The live sessions involve me sharing some content about birds, how birds vocalize, what they're saying and how we can understand them. Each week, I offer up some optional assignments and challenges that are a combination of outdoor observations and some research, too. For live classes, I encourage discussions and updates from people in the class if they'd like to share. In general, the class is designed for adults and interested teens, but if you want to have your 8 year old join in, that's okay with me, too.
