  • We did it! The 50th Episode of Learn a Bird has dropped...and it's a CLASSIC BIRD for North Americans....the Red-Tailed Hawk (cue screeching cry and circling bird in blue sky)
    ..
While most of us were misled by TV producers to believe that the typical call of the Red-Tailed Hawk belonged to an eagle, you now know better, folks.
    ..
The birds in today's episode are making the OTHER Red-Tailed Hawk sound - a repetitive, sometimes called "annoying" call made juveniles who've fledged the nest, but still aren't too capable when it comes to filling their bellies - yes, these are begging calls.
    ..
So...watch, listen and learn about North America's most widespread and visible bird of prey - the Red Tailed Hawk!

We have a red-tailed hawk family in our area, and have for well over a decade. LOVE hearing and seeing them! The other day I heard so much calling back and forth, wondered what was going on, could one be in trouble? But from this video I learned that it’s normal communication between 2 juveniles. LOVE “Learn a Bird!”

I always think of Red-Tailed Hawks as the 'Clint Eastwood' Hawk, because recordings of their call were always the go-to "Hawk Sound" that was dubbed into movies (usually Westerns) whenever the director needed one. For me, that's most apparent in Sergio Leone's 'Dollars Trilogy' of movies starring Clint Eastwood, but the Red Tail call is the sound that most layman non-Bird people associate with a Hawk. Of course, for us birders, we know that there's no way a Red-Tailed Hawk would be in Italy, where the 'Dollars' movies were filmed, but I guess there's just something that screams "foreboding deathly desert in a Western!!" about the Red-Tailed call, so that's why it became the go-to Hawk sound 🤣🤣🤣

I love hawks too but since I have hens - I’m glad to see the crows chase them away!
