Another great video, I can completely agree that go out without a plan and within a few shots you will see a pattern arise with what you are photographing or what is capturing your eye, it's almost subconsciously. Who doesn't love to see a caravan in the countryside...
Thanks for watching Steve, hope you're doing well! I always enjoy shooting in this way, going out with little expectation for the photography is often very rewarding and it often makes you open to shooting new and different things. Don't get me wrong, we all have photography outings where we're hoping to shoot something very specific but every so often its nice to have a more casual approach. There are so many caravans around here 😂
“- Walter Mitty: When are you going to take it? - Sean O'Connell: Sometimes I don't. If I like a moment, for me, personally, I don't like to have the distraction of the camera. I just want to stay in it.”
Love this! I completely appreciate that sentiment, there have definitely been times where I haven't taken a photo and just enjoyed the scene in front of me.
Great video very informative
Thanks for watching Steve! Really glad to hear you found it helpful! 🙏🏻
New leicas have bad colors IMO, Lumix has much better colors
Love the silver birch in the former slate quarries. Oh and the setting isn’t too shoddy 😂
You and me both! Silver birches are always so photogenic, coupled with this sort of landscape, it really is beautiful! Thanks for watching! 😊🙏🏻
Belated happy birthday Chris. Great photographs Chris and very helpful advice. Love the mix of industrial and natural landscape. Somewhere I have added to my list of places to visit.
Many thanks Jim, that's really kind of you! 🙏🏻 hope you're doing well. The variety that these landscapes offer is why i'm often seeking out these sorts of places. I'm not a purist when it comes to landscape photography so being able to, yes, photograph the landscape, as well as explore the more intimate details and observe the history of the location is a big draw for me! I feel like i've only scratched the surface of this location so i'm looking forward to heading back there!
Hi Chris. That beautiful name, Dorothea Quarry, love it. I think a combination of videos in the field and discussion offers a good balance to prevent the channel from getting samey. Enjoy the rest of your week.
It is isn't it! The quarry was named after the daughter of the founder, I believe. I totally agree, it's how I like to reflect on my photos, sometimes in the field it's hard to gather thoughts because i'm often focussing on the photo making and the video whereas taking a few days to gather my feelings regarding the photos and then talking about them at home sometimes feels more valuable.
Such a beautiful video, Chris, love these photos - that one at 1:15 you posted on Instagram in particular. Really considered and informative tips too, I love the way you think and consider the local area and local history as a composition factor. Following on from these tips, particularly tip 4, I think a video on sequencing would be really interesting. Keep up the great work mate 🙌
Thanks so much for taking the time to tune in mate! I really wasn't sure if that photo would work when I was taking it as it was tricky to compose from where I was standing - there were a lot of branches creeping into the frame from the hillside below me so had to do a bit of photoshopping but I'm glad the colours came through in the final image - that was the thing that drew me to that scene but it would have been nice to capture more of the reflection in the water! Thanks mate, that's really nice to hear! I think because of my preference in focal length (I like to photograph with a more natural field of view, similar to what you would see if you were stood next to me when taking the photo) I often feel the surrounding landscape is always present in my vision and therefore it just feels right to include it - it helps you step into the photo almost. I will definitely do a video about that, it's something I'm thinking about at the moment with a new project i'm working on (I'll be sharing more about that too).
Wow, amazing location and Happy Birthday man🎉
Thanks so much man! Really appreciate it! Absolutely agree, it's such an amazing place to explore! Feel like I only scratched the surface on this visit so i'm excited to go back!
Happy belated my man looks like you spent it in the best way possible! Could not agree more about how difficult those types of places are to photograph, you smashed it though 👌👌 also the fleece is epic!!
Thanks so much mate, really appreciate it! 😌🙏🏻 This is definitely how I like to spend my birthday's, thankful that Alex is always up for a bit of a bit of an adventure! Thanks mate, conditions play such a huge role in these sorts of places so I was really lucky to get some nice light! It wasn't a particularly optimistic forecast when we left the house 😅. I've been living in this fleece for the last week 😂. I'm 33 now and am therefore firmly in my 'fleece phase' of life!
@ hahahaha 32 this year for me and can confirm it’s the comfy fleece life all the way (trackies under the jeans for the cold sometimes) 😂😂
Happy Birthday Chris. Great tips and photos as always. Not directly photography related but when I’m on a similar hike, I like to discover some of the history behind the subject. Not for everyone but helps me build a story behind the scene.
Thanks so much Alan, really appreciate it! 🙏🏻 Yes, I totally agree! Although this quarry is publicly accessible (plenty of footpaths and trails) it's not littered with information boards etc but the few they provide really give you a great insight into the quarry's history. I'd also read up about it online a few months ago and there's some amazing before and after photos of the adjoining village which show how it's transformed in the last 100 years. It definitely gives you a deeper appreciation for your surroundings!
Good "Happy Birthday" outing, North Wales is gorgeous, some great photos there, Chris. (and belated Happy Birthday too!)
Definitely my ideal way to spend my birthday! Out and about with my camera! 😌👌🏻 Thanks so much, I feel very lucky that I get to experience these places, I'm super grateful to live in North Wales! Looking forward to exploring this area a little bit more this year!
A great place to get to - and be in snow, on your birthday - I went to Rydal in the lakes - Oh to be 33 again!!!
In 33 years this is the first time I've experienced snow on my birthday! January is usually so wet and miserable around where I live so this was an absolute treat! I tried to make the most of it! We drove through Rydal when we were in the Lakes back in September but unfortunately didn't get chance to stop - I remember thinking that it was somewhere I'd like to come back to an explore! Maybe for next year's birthday 👌🏻😌. Thanks for watching!
Some lovely shots again mate, makes me excited to get back in the mountains! Hope you had a great birthday!
Thanks man! We'll have to get out there soon! 📸👌🏻
Thanks for another great video, Chris. I like the balance between seeing you photograph in the field and then hearing your discussion of the images from a creative perspective. I find this to be very helpful. Recently I took some images of old buildings in a similar type of location. Now I will re-visit the scene with your suggestions in mind and being more aware of context and geography. I think it will be interesting to compare the experience as well as the final images. Belated happy birthday.
Thanks so much Mary, I really appreciate you saying that! It's always good to know that my videos are helpful - that's what I always hope to achieve! They're always some of my favourite places/subjects to explore just because of the remote areas where they're often found! It's great to know that you enjoy them too! I hope these tips help! That context of the surrounding area, coupled with the weather conditions plays such a huge role in these types of landscapes so if you can get some nice light it'll make all the difference! That's certainly what i've found over the years! Many thanks for the birthday wishes, i'm very grateful 🙏🏻. Thanks for watching!
(Belated) Happy Birthday, Chris! Many more to come. Was the intro guitar music your own? (Stylish sweater, too😊.) IMO, super venues like this one can pose sensory overload challenges. We want to, but can’t, take everything. Practical tips, with major factor being if images are intended to stand alone, or be presented as a body of work (or video). My preference is for close-in/detail images that can stand on their own. My sense is that a series will have a smaller audience of viewers who are more appreciative of the story behind a place than the artistry of individual pics (e.g., historical society). A video might well be the suitable vehicle for such viewers. Otherwise, I’d go for the stand-alone photos. Hope that makes sense. Cheers!
Thanks so much Paul, very grateful for the birthday wishes my friend! Unfortunately not my music on this one but i've been working on a few more tracks to include in future videos! 😊 Your absolutely right, they certainly can be overwhelming! There's always so much to photograph but finding the best way to convey what we see in front of us is often the challenge. I tend to shoot with the aim of creating a collection as I think it helps provide a good documentation of the location when viewed altogether - the tips in this video are definitely aimed at that sort of approach. I think a video would be equally compelling and also very immersive! That's something i'll consider on my next visit!
Sterling work sir. Very enjoyable stuff.
Thanks Derren, really appreciate the kind words mate! Always appreciate you taking the time to watch!
great video, loved all the shots and hope you had a great birthday
Thanks Adrian, really appreciate that! It means a lot! Thanks for watching! 🙏🏻😊
Lovley video man, them moutains are something else! Happy belated again, hope you had a great day!
Thanks mate! Really appreciate it! Man, the view of the mountains from that valley is something i'll never get tired of! Always feels a little 'off the beaten track' compared to the rest of the national park.
@ good stuff!! Yeah honestly must of been unreal in person 🤩
Thanks for watching folks! Hope this video provides some useful tips 📸👌🏻
Are you doing this full time?
@@wheelsoncrisis I do photography full time but not TH-cam. TH-cam is just for the enjoyment of it.
Hi Chris, interesting video and question. For me, my photography passion is Street photography, capturing candid moments on the streets but also a love for finding debris and rubbish left behind, especially cigarette ends. It's all part of the story, the story of the street, but also on a social history point of view.
Hi Chris. I like shooting in the winter. The urban areas I frequent with the harsh light and shadows, the splash of colour amongst the dark clothing, the difference in peoples mannerisms in the cold, all combine for a different way of shooting as a result, spot metering being an example. I, like yourself, not only edit in b&w but also switch the rear screen to b&w. I can see in the comments that people are liking what you are doing here which bodes well for the future. Enjoy the rest of your week
hi, just a question, what made you decide to you get the lumix s5ii instead of the lumixs5iix? besides the price difference.
Thanks for your question! My main motivation was just the fact that the additional features of the S5iix weren't essential for the type of work I do! I think it's fantastic value and the specs of the iix are amazing but it's just comes down to what you need and whether its overkill or not. If you can afford the additional expense then the iix would no doubt be a great choice but i'm super happy with the s5ii
Another fab video and with regards the images of the chapel, for me the middle one just edges it, but all 3 tell a story whether individually or together.
Wow such incredible location, which is on my to visit list and beautiful images. Just love your videos and you have a calmness about you that makes your films so engaging.
That really means a lot, thanks so much Steve! So glad you've been enjoying the videos! 😊
I am software engineer working with opensource software ... my mind and heart is just open ... no problem with sharing at all ..
Here in the Midwest it’s cold and gloomy daily. Makes it hard to be motivated to go out and shoot. Think your video popping up on my recommended tab is a sign to get out anyway. Nicely done
I can totally relate, that motivation to go out with a camera can be hard to find in winter, coupled with the thought of maybe not getting many decent photos because of the weather, its no wonder we struggle sometimes! Thanks for watching, I hope these tips help the next time you venture out! I’m sure you’ll get some great shots 👌🏻📸
Here in the southern highlands of SE Australia, Winter is my favourite time of the year to photograph. The light is softer, the sun is lower and there is more chance of fog and mist. The conditions are more conducive to good woodland and landscape photography. A hot dry summer as we have been experiencing the last month where the light is harsh and contrasty and the landscape is dry tends to be the most difficult time of the year to photograph, but even then I can find inspiration and get out. Unless conditions are absolutely awful (perhaps pelting rain), I think all of this thought that conditions are sub-optimal is generally a mindset. There is always something to photograph, no matter what conditions present if you are willing to open your mind.
Great video, thanks for sharing Chris.
Thanks for watching! Really happy to hear you found it helpful! 🙏🏻
Actually I struggle to get out in summer here in Australia, hot high 30’s and baking harsh sunlight makes me want to retreat indoors. Winter does give us better skies, reflections, great b&w opportunities, simplicity and one can rug up.
That sounds really rough, I struggle in summer too and we really get temperatures as high as the 30's. I've always favoured the inbetween seasons, here in the UK at least, they offer a good mixture of conditions but I am trying to explore and embrace the beauty of the individual seasons. There's always something to photograph if we can get out there - but I appreciate that sometimes it's the 'getting out there' that's the hardest part.
i live in the pacific northwest near the olympic mts. and yes winter provides it's challenges. dull dark days really limit my opportunities but when we do get some good light we are all very over joyed and it can make for some beautiful photography. thanks for the tips we'll see how they work out........peace
I'd love to photography the pacific north west, the Oregon coast has always been on my list. The mountain landscape up there also looks amazing but I have no doubt conditions are challenging in winter! As you say, sometimes it only takes that brief window where the weather breaks and it can completely change the landscape! Light makes so much difference in the winter! Thanks for watching buddy!
Great ideas, echo you r thoughts on the black and white. My biggest fear at the moment is slipping on the ice, damaging my camera / hurting myself so I can't then go out ! Joys of living in West Yorkshire .😆
Hope you're fairing ok up there with the snow and ice - I know the North has been hit hard this week. We've had a lot to deal with here in North Wales but seem to have gotten off a little lighter! Safety always has to be a priority when venturing out with the camera in Winter, i'm not one to take unnecessary risks for the sake of a photo! When the weather allows though, I'm sure you get some amazing opportunities living in Yorkshire, it's a beautiful part of the country 😊. Thanks for watching and stay safe!
Good video! I am 71 years young and each winter becomes more difficult for me. I am living now in the State of Wyoming and the winds are so strong. Very normal to have a near zero F wind chill on the open prairies. Driving to the foothills and the mountains when the roads are open is a challenge as well. When I lived in the state of Mississippi winters were more damp but it was so much easier to get out and about with the camera. Just getting dressed for the winter weather is always fun! I still try. I tend to do more black and white in the winter as the contrast is so nice.
Thanks for watching! I absolutely understand, we have similar struggles in North Wales when the weather is bad, just trying to get to these places can be a struggle, the roads aren't always maintained very well and are pretty impassable at times. I've always prioritised safety ahead of any given photo - i'm not the kind of photographer who'll take unnecessary risk just for a photo. It's all about doing what's comfortable for you and seeking out opportunities within that risk tolerance - that's how I approach it! You won't see me on top of mountain in the National Park in the middle of winter 😅. But there's always plenty of other things to focus on!
Always get this feeling in winter after moving around so much in autumn.. definitely some great tips there to help with winter photography though. Thanks Chris 👍
Thanks for watching Joel, I'm glad you found some value in this video! I know what you mean about that transition from Autumn to Winter - I've always historically felt like all the momentum from being out so much in the autumn gets lost. This year i've tried to maintain not to let the season impact my outings and i'm still trying to get out just as much but i'm just shifting my focus when out and about.
Hello, TH-cam is already offering automatic AI dubbing, please activate it for greater global connectivity. A hug from Latin America
Excellent advice. I'm just editing a few snaps from yesterdays lunchtime walk. Will try a bit of split toning now.
Thanks Derren! Looking forward to seeing your photos mate! Have fun with the split toning, the beauty of it is you can be as subtle or as dramatic as you want and it all depends on the mood you're going for with the photos. I don't use it all the time but certain scenes call out for it!
@@chrisharveyphotography thanks. I've put them on Instagram, not that anyone will see them. But still ;)
I feel the pain! Where I am it's pretty common for the temperature to stay below -10° C for a week at a time in winter and going outside is just miserable. But tougher photographers than me are rewarded with beautiful snowy vistas.
I feel your struggle, Scott! You're not alone! Winter varies so much depending on where you live but hopefully you'll be able to get some good shots before the Spring! 👌🏻 Thanks for watching buddy!
Excellent stuff! Motivation for sure, thank you sir!
Thanks Jamie, really appreciate you checking out the video! I'm glad you got something out of it mate! 🙏🏻
Great video Chris, I like the split toning idea, a brilliant suggestion for lifting colour in winter photography. Came away from watching your video feeling very positive about going out and taking some images.
That's so great to here! Thanks for watching and i'm glad you got something out of this video! The thing I love most about split toning is you can be as subtle or as dramatic as you want. Some scenes just call out for it!
Hey Chris, just subscribed. I have been watching and enjoying your videos of late. Nice photography work just love the reflection in the puddle and your calm and natural videos. Cold and snow here in Calgary! Cheers.
Thanks so much for the support Stephen, I'm really glad to hear you've been enjoying the videos - means a lot! Winter for you guys is no doubt very different to winters here in the UK. I'd love to get over to Alberta one day, it's somewhere i'd love to photograph! 👌🏻
@@chrisharveyphotography Thanks so much for your response Chris. Yes the Rockies make for an amazing subject. I have 5 videos now nothing compared to your 81 but my two on Wedge Pond will give you a fall and winter look. How do you stay so calm, chill and inspiring on your videos? All the best for 2025.
I'll have to find out more about split toning, and actually get further than the local park, walking the dogs, to some of the places with more interesting content... Great video again, Chris. Good to have things to think over.
Thanks for watching! I think split toning is a great tool, you can use it subtly or dramatically but more than anything, it's just good to experiment and see what you like the look of. I don't use split toning in every single photo I edit but if i'm trying to add a bit of mood or drama it can be really powerful. Maybe I should do a video about this sometime.
Very inspiring video!
Thanks so much for saying that, I really appreciate it!
Physical discomfort is my chief winter obstacle - always something to photograph, but can’t stay out very long. Will have to experiment with split toning. When you apply B&W do you preview the image in camera as B&W? Cheers!
I can certainly relate to this Paul! Split toning is a really powerful tool, it’s a lot about experimentation but I really enjoy the results! It depends, sometimes I do, but most of the time I just shoot in RAW and make the editing decision in post! Thanks for watching, have a great week!
You create nice videos, the story telling is great. Any tips how or where to learn storytelling?
Thank you for saying that, I really appreciate it! I still feel like I have a lot to learn when it comes to storytelling in my videos but I’m trying to do it more! Maybe I’ll make a video about it this year! ☺️
@chrisharveyphotography yeah, make video about it definitely, but not too late in the year😅, just joking. Is nice to watch your videos, I have been always thinking its about beautiful photos, but is not, is actually how you put it together. Really pleasure to watch 👍😍🤩
great video man, absolutely agree the wether recently has been pants. Especially with the recent flooding! Hope all was safe.
Thanks for watching mate! It’s tough here in the UK isn’t it! Weather has been shocking! All safe here though man, thanks for asking! Hope you guys are too! ☺️
It's about -8 c here in Boston, and yes, while I'm a cold boy from the north, it's a wee bit chilly, and where I like to photograph people more than any other subject, it's hard to find people as crazy as me out in the cold. :)
Oh man, that’s much colder than over here in Wales! We just struggle with rain and grey skies for most of the winter! I completely understand that heading out when it’s that cold is tough! I hope you’ve got some warm layers! 👌🏻☺️ thanks for watching Chris, happy new year buddy!
Loved this buddy! Got a very similar one on the way but grey lifeless days, which I guess is the same thing really 😂 also man I must be one of few who doesn’t touch split toning but this made me want to mess with it some more! Top work mate!
Ah ace! Looking forward to checking out yours mate! Thanks for watching this one! I’ve always struggled with winter but it’s definitely clicked this year. I think split toning has been a game changer for me - especially at this time of year! It can be really powerful but just takes a lot of experimentation ☺️👌🏻 your shots are great without it man, but it’s always fun to experiment! Hope you’re keeping well bud!
@@chrisharveyphotography Likewise mate I had a really good day out in the snow the other day but that's way easier than the drab grey days! Oh yes I'm the odd one out for sure haha, If I do grade it's normally via photoshop but mostly I'm a luminance and sat only guy 🤣will definitely have a play with it more in the coming week after this tho!
@@DISTANTMEDIA Me too regarding split toning. Figures that you would again be on the same topic wavelength 😊 as Chris. Argh.😊
Thanks for watching folks! Does anyone else struggle with photography during the winter? 📷❄️
Thanks, Chris. really enjoyed this given me some inspiration
Thanks for watching Barry! I’m glad you found it helpful! ❄️📷
