In one video you answered many of my questions. Both about equipment and about the approach to my hobby - photography. Thank you very much. Beautiful, informative, soulful, inspiring. Good luck to you!
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video and for leaving such a thoughtful comment, I really appreciate it! I'm glad you found the video enjoyable and that my style of video/photography and my philosophy around photography resonated with your own - it's always great to connect with like-minded photographers! Thank you for the support 🙏🏻
Thanks for your thoughts Chris, glad to hear you are happy with your new system and lens. That lens is one I'm considering if I make the switch from Fuji to a S1 (mainly because I prefer the way the screen tilts) It's also got the benefit of being pretty cheap in photography gear terms as well as covering a useful mid zoom range.
Thank you my friend! So far so good with the Lumix system - there are a couple of quirks on the photography side of things but the video features are exceptional. I did expect that though given that the s5ii is probably more video-centric! I think your decision to consider the S1 is a great one! If you make the switch i'd love to know how you get on with it! I'd be curious because Fuji was one system I considered before deciding to go with Panasonic - in the end Panasonic just seemed to offer better value for money.
Thanks for watching Jim! I know a lot of my audience probably don't shoot Lumix so my aim was to try and make this video a little broader in its relevance. So happy to hear that you're enjoying the videos! I'm truly grateful for your support my friend
Definitely agree on the field of view discussion - that 18-40mm L-mount lens looks good for your system (I think?!) too. I've come to the conclusion that our field of view changes depending on our environment. In an urban environment (and maybe woodland), where things are a lot closer to us, for me it's between 21-28mm, out in rural areas it's more like 28-43mm because things are further away for me. For a documentary style at least. Anyway, great video, photography and music, Chris. And high five to a fellow music degree graduate! University of Liverpool class of 2008 alumni here! Keep making beautiful music mate!
Thanks for watching Max! Hope you're doing well mate. I'll have to check that lens out for sure! I also think the point you make about FOV, and the impact the environment you're shooting in has on our perception super interesting! It's not something i'd considered but it's definitely something i'll be more conscious of moving forward! You're a fellow muso?! That's awesome man! What do you play? I've come to realise recently that so many photographers are also musicians! 😄
@@chrisharveyphotographyI used to play keyboards/piano, but to be honest the degree put me off the music industry and I haven’t properly played, even as a hobby, in years now (though my Yamaha Grand has followed me from house to house over the years, so I can’t quite let go!). It’s wonderful seeing you’re still making music mate 😊
Hi Chris. I am paying so much attention because there is a foot race on between your set up with the other lenses and another brand. I have used some wonderful kit lenses and refuse to be put of by the bias of others. I like the focal range and understand why it is a fixture on your camera, and as you have proved with these pictures, it is a good bit of kit.
Hi Colin! There's so much gear out there so it's good that you're adopting a measured approach. These are, of course, just my thoughts on this lens and how it works for me with my photography style but hopefully it'll be of use to anyone who values the same things I do in terms of photography.
Points well made, Chris. Might have been clearer, IMO, w/a few (numbered) text dividers to emphasize each point. I can recall when 35mm film cams came w/a 50mm “kit lens”, usually w/3.5 as max aperture. In fairness, you already knew quite a bit about perspective, optics, aperture, and preferred field of view when you purchased the cam w/lens. Thus, you were able to make a well-informed, experience-based decision. However, IMO folks just starting out who lack that “head start” need some time to figure things out in their own use cases. For them a kit lens might be a better introduction than a destination, if that makes sense. The kit lens limitations will manifest themselves and guide folks to lenses more well-suited to their personal needs and preferences. My go-to lens is an 18mm-50mm f2.8 on APS-C camera, based on accumulated experience. Some kit lenses have rather pronounced distortions - as revealed by toggling LR lens profile corrections on/off. Cheers!
Thanks for watching Paul! Great to hear you enjoy a zoom lens too, that 18-50 sounds perfect! 👌🏻 it’s nice to have most bases covered from time to time! The distortion point is a valid one, I think most lenses vignette to a certain degree but it’s easily corrected in LR these days! Makes our lives easier 😃
I enjoyed this episode. I often wonder if I should get a 'kit' lens of some sort, but they've never really inspired me in the same way a small fast prime does.
Thanks for watching mate! I think there’s definitely a use for them. As someone who enjoys shooting primes myself - especially when I want to challenge myself to see the world at a certain focal length (which is a great exercise) I still find myself using a zoom lens for days where I want a bit of freedom, more so on outings when I don’t really have a subject in mind. I think having all your favourite focal lengths at your disposal in a single convenient lens is great! 😊
Great pictures and music. I go on very similar walks to this, shooting dilapidated buildings and farm equipment for which I use a wide angle. There is also a lot of wildlife on my walks which needs a much longer focal length. Short of taking out two lenses or cameras, I just about manage with a 24-200mm shooting typically at 24-65 and 200 with nothing in between. I don’t think Nikon make a 20-60 but that and a 100-400 would be the perfect setup for me on these walks.
Thanks for the kind words Alan! 🙏🏻☺️. I haven’t shot wildlife yet. We have a scope in our living room window and it’s nice to observe the birds in the trees at the bottom of our garden but I’ve not committed to photographing them yet - probably because of the need to invest in an 100-400 lens (I’ve debated it so many times, believe me 😅). I think that setup sounds great for what you shoot, I think that’s the most important thing, just finding what works for your style of photography. I do hope more manufacturers adopt this focal range, I think it’s far more interesting and versatile than a 24-70 which has long been the standard for these sorts of zoom lenses.
I should have got this lens when I purchased S5II, it would have been cheaper purchasing it then. Live and learn I’ll get it as a walkaround and travel lens.
Thanks for watching! What lens did you end up going with when you picked up the camera? I think you could pick this lens up at any point in the future and still find value in it! Will be a bargain on the used market I’m sure 👌🏻
@@chrisharveyphotography I thought that my L mount Sigma 2.8/45 would be a sufficient focal length as a walkaround lens and it is, but Lumix 20-60 would no doubt add more flexibility.
Thanks for watching folks! A tad late but hope you enjoy this one! 📸

Very interesting video Chris, even though I do not use lumix, the points you raised are relevant. Thoroughly enjoying all of your videos.

You’re not alone. I love an old abandoned vehicle, especially on a farm 😁

Great job as usual on your video. Nice looking guitar! What is it? single p90?
Thanks so much! Well spotted buddy! It's a Karl Longbottom guitar with, as you rightly say, a single P90! Fabulous guitar 👌🏻

I've seen them pretty cheap on eBay etc under 200 quid in some cases. I think some buyers sell them straight away just because it's a kit lens.
Realyy like your videos from mexico
Thank you so much! Hope you’re enjoying the holidays! 🎄🎅
What lens was this video filmed on? I assumed it was filmed on the 20-60mm until I saw it on screen!
All shot on the 20-60 with the exception of the intro where I’m holding that lens - that clip was shot on the Lumix 50mm f1.8
@@chrisharveyphotography I have the same lenses, both are brilliant.
saw 179euro deal, gonna grab it!
Can't argue with that! That's a steal 👌🏻
There is no need for 2.8 in landscape, f4 is more than enough!
Totally agree! 👌🏻😊
