Let's Play Mass Effect - Part 7: Now We Do Things MY Way!
Ahhh the calm series of conversations before the storm! I hope y'all don't mind all the dialog; there's just no help for it with Bioware games. We love them though yeah?
Also, apologies for not being the most chipper. It's been a rough day in a very tough week in a rough month. Next break shouldn't be this long though, I hope. As always, thank you for your patience.

No obligation ever, but it's there if you feel so inclined.
Also: I'm blogging about my gameplay experience over at my wordpress account: soldierhawk.wordpress.com/. There, you'll find more detailed thoughts about what's going on in the game after I've had time to mull them over, as well as other good stuff.

    I can assure you being a mindless muppet, and picking all the above and to the right options makes for a better storyline, aside from when kicking the control stick to the left for more information to fill out the Codex. But it's your play through, your way. I think there's something wrong with the Conrad story though if you do that, and you don't get to punch a reporter, and that's about it.

    Strange that hull patching is used as an example of something they can't get on the Flotilla, it's so much less complex than, like, electronics or something. If you can mine fuel, then the refining for metals and stuff seems like it shouldn't be that much harder. It's an odd oversight for a game that's normally pretty good about its lore, and of course a terribly minor one that I hadn't noticed until now.

    • @rwdavidoff
      @rwdavidoff หลายเดือนก่อน

      More lore nitpicks! The rule about single children only is interesting, population-wise, since it would seem to imply a goal of shrinking the Quarian population on net, I think? Single child isn't replacement rate, if you wanted to mandate replacement rate limits you'd pick two, I think? Which, like, maybe they're overtaxing the ships they have, so they do have a long-term goal of getting down to some number, but that would seem odd as a goal and you'd think after 300 years they'd have already reached it or not unless the liveships are wearing out badly.

    I really do like the way the first game is scripted. I always tended to do Feros first, it kind of felt like the most "starting town" of the adventures, sometimes after recruiting Liara and sometimes not. Obviously, Noveria after Liara, at least after my first playthrough and...figuring out I did those two in very much the wrong order. :P

      "Remember, you were a human long before you were a Specter" is such a funny line. I'm imagining some kind of in universe fic plot where that could be reversed. Mass Effect is written in such a way that if you're a male Shepard, you want Ashley to survive, if a female Shepard, you want Kaidan to survive. If you're optimizing your gameplay decisions, you want Kaidan to survive. If you're after the guns and boobs, you want Benezia's boobs to look less like a hairy backside. If you have less sympathy for turians after you figure out that Nihlus, Paladin, and Garrus are the exception, and the norm actually murdered people for a law they couldn't possibly know anything about, and you feel that letting her die is letting the aliens (including biotics, which are from the aliens) win somehow, then Ashley. No wait, it's the boobs and backside.

I also remember having lots of fun with the sniper rifle, and more challenge when restricted to a pistol. I was also surprised at how useful Neural Shock was when I got a chance to use it. Cryo and Incendiary rounds made me squeamish, and Singularity making objects float and orbit each other was fun. A lot of the effects don't carry over from Mass Effect 1 into Mass Effect 2.

    The only problem with Manuel, aside from his manager being off her rocker--'The solution to everyone who knows what they're talking about', funny--is that he said the one line you should never say, except you'll probably need to actually learn from history to do it. Never, ever, ever, say that I'm the only sane one left, unless everyone is dead, and you're in the privacy of your own home. Sane people say that they're probably crazy, or they don't know whether they're sane or not. Oh, and wouldn't it be fun if seeing the future comes hand in hand with jackass time cops that do their best to discredit people? Edit: Yes, fun. Fun. The type of fun where you want everyone having fun to just die.

    'I gave him an extra dose of his meds shortly before the attack'. Why would you do this? Normally, I'm supposed to think 'Oh, yeah, that'll help', but in actual fact doubling the dosage CAUSES THE PROBLEM. You cannot overdose someone like that. I need oxygen to breathe, but I don't need several tonnes of it jammed up my backside. I need clean water to live, but I don't need distilled water (that'll actually kill anyone through dehydration, and the plants, too).

  • @3mpt7

    The Ashley in Mass Effect 1 and the Ashley in Mass Effect 3 are not the same personality; Mass Effect 3 kind of assumes that the only reason you keep her around is to romance her. Same goes for Kaidan, except he has a stronger personality that survives ME2. It's really awkward in the Citadel DLC with a male Shephard. I think the first time around I kept Ashley alive, and her reaction in Mass Effect 2 to joining Cerberus matches her personality, whereas it doesn't for Kaidan--Kaidan I'd expect to listen, investigate, and join the Normandy to better keep an eye on Shephard and report back to the Alliance that way.

    12:00 Despite having a thorough grounding in World War 2 in Primary, I had no idea about the Pacific theater until I was moved to Tasmania, and even then I thought that the bad blood was behind us until I was moved to the Northern Territory, where Darwin got flattened. This is eighty years later, not thirty. It's more that Pressly has PTSD rather than racism--those who live with those with PTSD in turn get PTSD. Before moving to the Northern Territory and being shown that this was real, not an internet-thing, I had less sympathy.

    Try Dragon Age 2. I enjoyed it, and couldn't get into Dragon Age: Origins much. The main character's name is Hawke. Mass Effect's combat was great for me, actually. There was less of the hide-behind-cover and more spray and pray, and let your shields and armour (or squad) take the damage. I think my shooter video game only combat experience went Halo to Gears of War (learn how to throw a grenade again) to Half-Life to Mass Effect, with Halo being my first (and so it took months to point the rifle in the right direction), and Gears of War being an oddity with the chainsaws and grenades (I died to the tutorial).

      Daaamn really? Poor Kaiden lol. That makes me want to save him more both because it's my Shep's canon and because fewer people have seen it.

    Ashley is...more interesting (than her common fandom reduction) in this game if you run through all her dialogue, but I also generally choose Kaidan. In future games, I don't actually know if she's interesting or not since she's barely in ME2, and as noted I've never played 3 myself.

    One definitely has the best game feel of the Mass Effects I've played myself. Two has much less interesting world in a lot of ways, with all the Cerberus stuff and the main plot, and much more corridor-shooter gunplay, but the character missions and the squad generally make up for it...mostly until the end. And then I never bothered playing ME3, because at the time I was broke and playing them like on a two-year delay when they got cheap, and by the time it was two years after ME3 I was exhausted by the concept of Cerberus suddenly everywhere and winning all the time, and all that. I watched the bits I was interested in on Spoiler Warning or other shows, and called it a series.

    Having the different armor types was nice...but they did look silly a lot of the time. Having to go through and make sure everyone had the best possible guns and armor and stuff in ME1 was a chore, but not having to make sure everyone had a nice warm sweater and snow pants before you went on missions in 2 did feel like it lacked something as far as why you should be looting and going to stores.

      In seriousness though I feel like the environmental mechanics were too toothless for the armor varieties to really matter. End of the day the biggest number won. At least 2/3 didn't clog your inventory about it. And in fairness the guns really did feel different.

    You know, it's crazy, I rarely leave comments because I'm just that type of viewer but I've been watching you for half my life now (pun not intended). It's cool the way you upload kind of rarely, because your videos are always a nice surprise, the way they pop up when I'm not expecting. It's always a strangley nostalgic escape watching your videos, because I've changed so much since I started watching your half life lets play at the age of 12, and I l've been through a lot. I have many fond memories of watching your lets plays throughout different stages of my life, like childhood and xmas, which has offered escapes throughtout othertimes like addiction and depression. I wonder if he's ever appealed to teachers about this. I know in the states the book is "banned" but at least in Canada over a decade ago, 1984 was a part of the High School cirriculum. Having a playable version of that book might help teachers engage their students in the work.

    • @rwdavidoff
      @rwdavidoff ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not universally banned in the states, as is typical of "banned books" (it's not like there's a national "ban-list" or anything, just a lot of school-by-school lists which are sometimes not even about "this can't be in the library" but "this can't be required for class"). It was in my middle school curriculum, and I think we _also_ read it in high school?

    I think your commentary is what inspired me to pick up the book in the first place, and it seems like my kind of game. A slow cerebral burn. I'm in. I mean, a literature aficionado with a penchant for Laidlaw and Orwell before the fact? I honestly, truly couldn't imagine anyone better to pick up and play Half-Life. Happy to do so. It's the least I could do.

    Ouch. That thing where Hawke realizes at the end of an episode she (and a bad tram run end point) soft-locked herself twenty minutes ago with two minutes left in the episode....that'll be fun to fi in Part 2. I had a suspicion, but...ouch, the level design shouldn't have allowed that I think.

    • @SoldierHawke
      @SoldierHawke ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhh I was wondering if that was a softlock based on what Ross said. Well, either I'll find a way out of it, or just replay that part. It's not so bad. It's this kind of thing that make mods (especially older ones) kind of charming. And I mean hey, at least it didn't eat my save like Black Mesa did a bunch of times lol.

    • @rwdavidoff

    • @MagnetismR

      Eh, I don't think it's so bad to allow the player to brute force their own path to their detriment, as long as the game actively discourages the path. It's not like an old school Sierra adventure game that screws you 3 hours down the line without knowing it. You know off the bat it's a bad idea. No clear place to land without massive damage, massive obstacle in way of tram... I think it's fine to allow players to make those sorts of mistakes, it's rewarding to finally come up with the solution on your own. I think it's quite clever the tram has to be backed up to the station, it's something Half-Life never touched on. And with the trademark lack of handholding, lots of levels with intended paths can be brute forced the wrong way. So redoing it, especially on a small as scale as this and knowing the path already is fair I think.
