  • Okay so that was a LOT of plug puzzles (and a little of me being an idiot, but in my defense, its harder to see things when you don't know what you're looking for!), but at least the environment is really cool. If I gotta be doing the same puzzles and getting killed by controllers anywhere, it might as well be in this awesome alien factory.
Patreon/Donations: If you're interested in contributing to Hawk's ability to continue to make videos (or perhaps to make them more often) feel free to support me on Patreon at / soldierhawk or donate at www.paypal.me/.... No obligation ever, but it's there if you feel so inclined.
Also: I'm blogging about my gameplay experience over at my wordpress account: soldierhawk.wor.... There, you'll find more detailed thoughts about what's going on in the game after I've had time to mull them over, as well as other good stuff.

it took a little bit for ya to sort out the plugs, but ya didnt die horribly to self inflicted explosions (only minor injuries from the aforementioned explosions). all around, a smashing success. its more than most of us can pull off when figuring it out for the first time.

Lol, just when I think I'm used to you missing things while puzzle solving, you hit me with the double whammy of simply refusing to turn around on the same spot for an extended period and then just not noticing a plug at your feet. Normally I joke about raging at my screen and over emphasize my backseat gaming, but that last one had me throwing my hands up a bit. but still maintaining the slightest edge of wry acceptance. =P
In all seriousness, another bit of Xen Suggestion Thread trivia. I also suggested the melding of organic and technology, where machinery and flesh were weirdly melded together. Granted, I believe that was the aesthetic of the original Xen factory, at least broadly and they may well have already been going down that path regardless of my suggestion. But I will admit a slight disappointment here, because rather than stapled flesh and bolted on machinery, I was thinking something more like the hangar bay of the Cylon Basestar in the 2003 Battlestar Galactica series, where there was mechanical framework, but with fleshy membranes stretched across it, as seen in the first part of the 1st Season finale," Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part 1" This is fine, it's just not what I thought of when I had the idea. And possibly beyond the graphical engine's abilities.
Yes, bow to the power of the Gluon gun. Seriously, that Hive-Hand is a liability a lot. Sure it's limitless ammo, but it's got a low damage output and as you saw, it's not very discriminatory in what it homes in on. them Vortigaunts were all> "Oh god, no, not the bees. Not the BEES!"

If there's one area I feel that the Crowbar Collective didn't quite do a Valve-polished job at, it's guiding the player through figuring out what's needed to solve the environmental puzzles in Xen, at least towards guiding them to all of the pieces that need to fit together. Granted, the original Xen wasn't a pinnacle of great design either, and it's definitely a challenge to do so when there's so many eye-catching things in the environment as well.

0:54 About view rolling: that's actually a bit of nostalgia they implemented. You see, the _Quake_ engine did the same sort of thing, and since _Half-Life_ originally used a modified _Quake_ engine, it carried over the effect. But Valve removed it sometime before the Steam port. I guess someone in Crowbar Collective really missed it.
