In this video, you raise the question of how long to cut the rope seals around the main bearing. This is, I believe the answer: the rope seal is slightly compressible. You should press as much of it as possible into the groove. Then, when you tighten down on the rope, it will compress and be snug on the ends, then push more tightly inward onto the shaft. If you want to test this, cut the seals shorter, and you certainly will have an oil leak, and not just as the cut ends, but too little inward pressure on the shaft will allow it to leak all the way around. I'm a huge fan of your work, Mr. Dominguez. I have learned a few things around TH-cam, but you are the best most thorough of all the TH-cam teachers. I'm overhauling my first 8BA Flathead V8 in a 1949 Ford F2 Pickup. I have watched your films over and over. Training in surgery let me watch masters of the OR repeatedly. You are in the class of teachers. Thank you.
Hi @Curtis1880. Thank you so much for your kind comments. I really appreciate it. I agree with you on the rope seal installation.
Excellent video. Really appreciate your attention to detail.
Thanks Rusty
Miss your videos, and that terrific coupe!
Thanks Robert, the Coupe has 3500 miles on it now and has been running great.
Hola Aaron. Felicitaciones desde Argentina. ¿Sabrías cuantas libras tiene ese motor. Sin agua y sin lubricante?
Hola Fabi, Lo siento, no lo hago.
What is the pressure test tool called? What do you clean your engine parts with? They were really dirty do you soak them in something?
Hi Dlucas, it's called a Flathead pressure test kit. I clean the rust off with a fine wire wheel on my battery powered drill. I use a small parts cleaning tank to clean the internal items.
Nice job, thank you from Bangkok,,,,,,
Thank you @kasems1536
Aaron, I believe your last video is about 1 year old. Is everything ok with you?
Hi Sawymer, thanks for asking. We moved to a farm a year ago and I have been working full time again. My free time to build has been very limited. I’m doing well though, thanks.
Buenos días me puede decir en que orden y que torque se apretando las culatas
Hola @elkinperez8351 empiezo a apretar en el medio y me abro camino hacia afuera en cada lado. Aprieto a 70 libras-pie.
sounds like you better yank that intake and re-adjust those noisy ass lifters
Hi Dennis, you must be talking about a different video, the motor doesn't run in this video.
Surprised no lube was used
Thank you.
Thanks so much for posting this. If the vacuum port on the manifold is already used for the wiper, do you see any issue sharing the port for both purposes?
Thanks Mal, I have never tried it. I think the PCV would work the same when the wiper motor is off. I don't know if the wiper motor would have enough vacuum to work correctly, the vacuum may take the easiest route, which I think would be the PCV. Pretty cheap to try it out though.
I regret not tackling a rebuild on the tired 239 Flatty in my 51 Ford Custom. I was'nt confident because it had so many peculiarities compared to modern V-8's.
Great vid! I'm installing a new head gasket on my (new to me) '50 Merc after I found a broken valve in #5 combustion chamber. No apparent damage to cylinder or piston, thank God. I think the previous guy installed a high lift cam, which I'm not too crazy about.
Hi mdogg, thanks, I hope it helps you with the gasket install.
Is that ford red
Hi Matthew, yes it is. Duplicolor 1605
Did you change the busing in the block? Ive heard its good to do, Im contemplating doing it....
Hi Andrew, I didn't. Take a look at the pump shaft and the bushing, if there isn't a lot of play between the two you're probably ok.
Great content. Is there any more content coming to the channel?
Hi gob, I hope so. I have been so busy the last 9 months that I havent had the time to do anything for my channel. I miss having the extra time. Hopefully things will slow down at some point so I can get back to the fun of making videos.
if you work on industrial, or farm equipment. you know how to rebuild a water pump.
With explaining and doing a good job in going through this build ------ You are ---- HELPING ---- those that are setting their cars up and possibly wondering ------ How do I get around this? ----- Good videos and Explanations --------- Rodney P.S ----- I know the years have passed since this build ---- Thank You for the responses back ----- Glad you did the Fish Plates --- and the hood would have to have been the one that I call has a Beak ---- hooks down in the front ------ I need one for my "38 Deluxe ------ Will continue to follow along and learn
Thank you
What did you do with the "39 Ford Hood? ------- Thanks for the video ------- Rodney
Hi rscruiser, I sold it with the body.
Your welds for the Z step up ---- look pretty good ------ for safety ----- you should "Fish Plate" either on the outside or on the inside of the frame ---- over the area you welded ------- I think you'll feel much better knowing the welded area will hold ------ Just started following along on your project ------ I don't have a Coupe it's a Roadster ---- that needs work too ------ You're moving right along on it ----------- Rodney
Hi rscruiser, I'm sure by now you know that I did fish plate the area.
Thanks. Flatbread are cool got two of them. Good work you do.
Thank you William
Thanks for showing it running. You did a great job rebuilding the engine!
Thank you.
I cannot praise you enough, Mr. Dominguez! Your entire Flathead series have blessed me in my new journey: I recently began resoration on a 1949 Ford F2 Pickup, and I believe that messing with Flatheads has gotten me hooked.
Sorry for the late reply, but thank you @Curtis 1880 I'm glad the videos are helpful.
Thank you for making a very well produced video. The tips you offered will help me when I need to rebuild my water pump.
Thank you
Never did a pressure test done that way myself. I set mine up, hoist it up and into a tank of water and run it up to 100 psi. You will damn sure know your bores are if you don't see bubbles from the cylinder walls.
Hi Mike, this is the most common way to pressure check a Flathead Ford.
Really cool
is there a video of first start, would love to see
Hi mech, sorry, but no video of the first start. It does run though. We bought a farm and moved, I have been so busy I haven't taken the time to put a video out. I need to pull it out and do a quick Iphone video, so people know it runs good.
fantastic thanks,would love that@@aarondominguez4533
What all did you have the machine shop do?
Hi Sammy, just magnaflux the block.
@@aarondominguez4533 Awesome, thank you. I assume the valve seats and all other wear items check out good?
Aaron, you mentioned a book for your clearances. What’s the best book in your opinion?
Hi @836mar, probably Ford Flathead Engines from Mike at H&H Flatheads.
@aarondominguez4533 Thanks a bunch/ Looking forward to your next project!
Coool hotrod. You were wrong to not let yer honey film your face. I would have loved to see your big wide grin and the man in control of his machine. Hope you still have it🫡
Hi Mick, thanks, and yes I still have it and drive it all the time😁
Nice job on the safety wire. Seen a lot of hack-jobs in that area.
Thanks gwolf, I have lots of practice on aircraft😀
That vacuum port you are using is needed for the power brake booster, putting the PCV valve inline will need to be sized small so you retain vacuum. Doug Knutson
Hi Doug. Do you mean if I'm using a power brake booster?, or are you meaning the vaccum advance wont work for the distributer?
Great video for all to learn from.😊
Thanks Don
good video hermano
Thanks Carlos
No oil filter? Just curious.
Hi Andrew, no oil filter. I just change the oil every 1500 miles. In my car, that's about once a year.
Was there a "start-up" video following this episode?
Hi sawymer, I have video of the motor running but have not had the time to edit and post it. Our business has been crazy busy and we moved to a new farm. Hopefully I can post it sometime soon. Aaron
Nice work clean thank you for sharing. Question you don’t use any spray on your gasket. Thank you
Hi Rene, no, I dont use spray on these types of gaskets. Haven't had any problems.
What's the white grease you add to the bolts?
Hi Javier, it's Permatex thread sealant 59235
Thanks for the Great Videos Beautiful Motor
Thanks Stu.
Maybe Truck from Canada
Maybe.
Nicely done. Thanks for sharing!
So where do you get your vacuum for your power brakes then
Hi Gordan, I don't use power brakes.😀
Hello Aaron, great video. We are rebulding a flat head here in Chile. Far away, very dificult to find spare parts. I have a question if you dont mine, the plugs that goes in the crank, is difficult to find them here, it is possible to change for thread bolt? Thanks again, great video.
Ola Alvaro, yes you can thread the holes and use threaded plugs.
What you most probably have here is an engine from a Monarch-the Canadian market version of a Mercury. Built with mix and match parts from both Ford and Mercury otherwise identical models, same year, same market, would have different engine configurations depending on what was supplied by the parent factory at any one time. I had one of the early sedans and working on it was a nightmare.
IT must have been fun back when you could rebuild a flat head and know that it's probably going to be a good running engine 💪
I'll bet it's a thrill to find something like that 🤔🔧🤔🔧👍,, rebuilding automatic transmissions 44 years and if I find a perfect C-4 OR C-6 TO RE DO I'M HAPPY 🔧🔧🔧
It's always a gamble buying an old flathead motor, when you find you have a good one it is a nice feeling.
Don't know much about flat head Fords but,,, I'll bet this is a honey of the hive
Yes, I was very happy when I opened it up and it looked good.
Power valve issue in the rear view mirror...time to marry that motor too a chassis.
whats the reason for it
Hi Lawrence, the stock setup is just a tube routing block gasses/smoke and oil out to the bottom of the engine bay. With the PCV setup the gasses/smoke and oil go back into the intake and get burned up, plus the vacuum from the intake help slow/stop oil leaks.
