It's a very clean and also very complete engine. The guy who had it before was taking care of it for sure.

Did you have any trouble getting the heat bolts off? Did you have to heat the bolt heads? Thanks for your reply in advance. Matt in Iowa. (proud new owner of a '50 Merc) @@aarondominguez4533

Hi @@mdogg1604 , no, that motor came apart pretty easily. It had been stored inside and out of the weather.

It's called a "head bolt heater." They were used in the northern tier states and Canada in the wintertime to aid in cold-weather starting. Ultimately replaced in the early sixties by the tank heater which circulated hot water through the entire cooling system, resulting in instant starting and instant cabin heat upon starting. Try to preserve that heater. It's an historic item. Nice motor, btw.

Had a 51 Ford 2 door in high school in 1961 . . . it had two in head heaters, when it was plugged in overnite in Winnipeg the gage was off the bottom when you started the thing. I had dual heaters inside which worked so good you could drive around in shirtsleeves at -30.

What you most probably have here is an engine from a Monarch-the Canadian market version of a Mercury. Built with mix and match parts from both Ford and Mercury otherwise identical models, same year, same market, would have different engine configurations depending on what was supplied by the parent factory at any one time. I had one of the early sedans and working on it was a nightmare.

It's always a gamble buying an old flathead motor, when you find you have a good one it is a nice feeling.

Are '49 up insert bearings or did any of them use babbit bearings? I'm just getting into flatheads from Chevy 235s so I'm not too familiar with them
