Never did a pressure test done that way myself. I set mine up, hoist it up and into a tank of water and run it up to 100 psi. You will damn sure know your bores are if you don't see bubbles from the cylinder walls.
Appreciate the comprehensive vids. I've been soaking them in lately. Got my first merc engine Jan 1st. I'm hoping I can clean the deck up myself flat so the heads will seal. Getting it decked runs me $200 and I'd avoid if I can. Looked it over yesterday and the only cracks I found was those narrow areas center head area between headboard and water passage...believe it's called the ford cracks ....that was it. Got to buy a pressure kit.
Hi Jordan, you can mount a 49-53 8BA style flathead like a modern engine with no problems. The earlier 59A style flathead has the integrated bell housing, and it is not recommended to hang it from the bell housing.

Hi Mike, this is the most common way to pressure check a Flathead Ford.

Hi Boxcar, I have never had a problem with sealing after cleaning both surfaces with a fine wire wheel on my drill.

If youd mound a flathead on an engine stand through the bell housing holes like engines sit on them nowadays that is a recipe for disaster or what?
