I review micro four thirds cameras, lenses, and portable peripherals with a focus on video features for sports videography, live streaming sports, and sport photography. I share my experiences and tips of using various MFT cameras and effective practical equipment for sport videography and live streaming as a sole operator using m43 gear.
Sony Portable Data Transmitter PDT-FP1 review
Sony PDT-FP1 portable data transmitter features specs review and comparison to Sony Xperia 1 V XQ-DQ54 and Xperia Stream XQZ-GG01. Sony’s 5G IoT Portable Data Transmitter is sometimes incorrectly referred to as the Sony Personal Data Transmitter. Nevertheless the Sony PDT-FP1 has Apps which allow for monitoring and live streaming video footage from an external camera connected to the data transmitter via HDMI.
This device has a heat-sink and a fan which keeps it cool under demanding circumstances such as video encoding with simultaneous live streaming.
The device lacks certain features in comparison to the Sony Xperia 1 V such as optical and digital stabilisation, as well as the numerous cameras that are available on the Xperia 1 V but since device is used in conjunction with an external camera, these shortcomings are not important.
*Disadvantages of Sony PDT-FP1*
- Does not have multiple cameras on the back like the Xperia phones
- Does not have optical stabilisation
- Does not have digital/electronic stabilisation
- Does not have a high quality camera like the Xperia 1 V XQ-DQ54
- Does not have a flash/LED on the back
- Does not have a 3.5mm jack/port for headset use or for an external microphone
- Does not have "Videography Pro App"
- Does not have "Photography Pro App"
- Larger and heavier than the Sony Xperia 1 V
- Does not have a correctly placed 1/4"-20 mount for use on top of a camera cage
- Cannot be used with typical phone holders due to its size
- Does not have as many strategically located microphones as the Sony Xperia 1 V
- Does not have as many high quality speakers as the Xperia 1 V XQ-DQ54
*Advantages of Sony PDT-FP1*
- Active cooling fan with externally exposed heat-sink
- HDMI input port (functions as a video capture card or external camera)
- Two USB-C ports (one for power/charging and one for data transmission)
- Ethernet port for low latency cabled network connection
- Mounting option on the back (1/4"-20 thread with two locating holes)
- Eyelet for attaching a wristband/neckband
*Sony PDT-FP1 specifications*
- HDMI input port
- 2 USB-C ports
- Ethernet port
- Cooling Fan and heat-sink
- 1/4"-20 mounting option
- Eyelet for attaching strap

Olympus OM-1 Problems Issues workarounds
I do not recommend this product. I bought two and both have the same problem. This is a product in development and does not work correctly. I bought it and had to return it because via USB-C as a webcam, the image distorts when configured to 4K at 30 frames, and it does not matter what app you are using (I used Windows Camera and OBS). If you increase the light level, the image looks worse. Via NDI and HDMI, there are no problems.
Many thanks for sharing your experience. Regarding changing the light level; are you referring to light in the room or the brightness setting of the video image?
Hey there, I've seriously been considering buying this and I've seen a ton of videos including the 1-hour live stream by Sony, I don't understand the esim/simcard function. How do I get network signal out if I'm not using ethernet or Wi-Fi? You've mentioned that I have to use Sony's app rather than TH-cam, for example, to live stream, does paying a monthly fee for the Sony service activate the esim? When purchasing a SIM card, can I go through any carrier ? Thanks so much in advance!
An e-sim is just like a normal physical sim card which you buy from a mobile carrier and pay for it to the mobile carrier. It has nothing to do with Sony software or Sony services. You can choose to buy a physical sim or an e-sim from your mobile carrier, they are both identical in terms of functionality. The only difference with an e-sim is that you don't have a physical sim to insert into your phone (or this device), instead the mobile carrier with provide you with a code to enter into your device (sometimes through a QR code, or over the phone, or through their website, or via email) which you can use to "label" your phone so that the phone company can recognize it. In addition to the e-sim, you can also insert a physical sim from a different mobile network carrier into the device. This will allow the device to use which ever mobile network which provides the best connection speed or fail over from one to the other which has the best connection (but both cannot be used simultaneously). To live stream, you don't need Sony's app, you can use the TH-cam app or any other third party app. However the TH-cam app does not have the features and customization options that I want, so I didn't try using it, but any streaming app work. The Sony app has good features but it has a monthly service cost which you need to buy and pay for to Sony. This has nothing to do with the monthly service charge which you pay to the mobile network for connectivity. Currently I use one physical sim card but no e-sim. Also, I use the default Sony app (Sony Monitoring App) for live streaming to TH-cam by connecting my mirrorless camera to the device. I am not sure if I have answered your question so please feel free to ask clarifying questions so that I can elaborate on any of the above details that are not clear.
@RadCameraMan Thanks for the answer, you certainly clarified some things for me. One concern I have though, if you can speak to it, is that utilizing an esim or SIM card from Verizon etc. doesn't yield much better connectivity than a cell phone or a hotspot from the same service provider. What do you think? Is there anything particular to this product that I would suggest otherwise?
1. In comparison to a cell phone; the connectivity should be identical (to my knowledge). This device has almost identical hardware to the Sony Xperia 1 V cell phone which further validates this. 2. Regarding hot-spotting to another phone over Wi-Fi with the same service provider; there are some differences to consider (good and bad). There is one big advantage which is that it will use less power to transmit data over Wi-Fi than over 4G/5G. So the battery will last longer on the PDT-FP1. However there is also one big disadvantage in that transmitting data over Wi-Fi and then again over 4G/5G will delay the transmission of data, which can be detrimental when used with protocols such as RTMP (which is what is used on TH-cam) since this protocol is less forgiving on delay and re-transmission of data for live streaming video. So the live stream is more likely to experience glitching. 3. The best approach is to hotspot using an Ethernet cable which is what I do. So I connect the PDT-FP1 via an Ethernet cable to an Ethernet dongle which connects via USB-C to my phone. This approach not only consumes less power than Wi-Fi (and 4G/5G) on both the PDT-FP1 and my phone but it also eliminates the added delay associated with Wi-Fi connectivity. This is my preferred method of connection. This approach does have its own disadvantages in that it requires an Ethernet cable and an adapter to convert Ethernet to USB-C for connecting to a phone. So you have to carry more equipment. Also, since the USB-C port on the phone will be taken up by this, it is not possible charge the phone simultaneously unless you also carry a small USB hub with you. So in my opinion this approach is the best but it requires some more equipment and might be less practical.
This is a used lens that has been unpacked before :))))
No, it's new. I suspect they package it this way to avoid paying import tax on it.
I accidentally screwed my lens cap on too tight, and used your video to determine what direction i needed to unscrew it. I then was able to unscrew it successfully. A great relief. Thanks!
I am glad the problem was resolved. I never thought this video would be useful for this issue.

The closest thing that looks like a PSP sony produced in quite a while.
I guess phones are so powerful now that they can play most games but without the good ergonomics of a PSP
How much did it cost while it was on sale?
I don't know about sales prices. I don't think Sony produces these anymore so whatever is out there is old stock
interesting and detailed review, thank you my dear sir

cool review, ty for making this
no worries, I'm glad it was useful
I only wish I saw this video before purchasing (and then the hassle of returning) the camera. Your analysis of the ergonomics/buttons/dials is on point. You are right re: the downgrade in color science, and in my experience the EVF and LCD color completely do not match with each other nevermind even the live scene. One real big annoyance for me is that a button cannot be assigned to enable the front dial for managing WB while the back dial manages +/- exposure (or vice versa)l. This is one of the most used features on my Pen-F, yet this latest powerful camera only allows one function to be managed by both the front and back dial?? A tad simplistic for such a computational beast no?
I agree with your take. I have spent a crazy amount of money on Olympus gear. So I really want them to make a better camera but my hopes have started to fade. I mainly use my cameras for videography as opposed to photography and I have started using Panasonic Lumix micro four third cameras more and more. The Lumix cameras are still not as good as Olympus when it comes to stabilisation, battery life, ergonomics, and colour science (previous generation of Olympus cameras) but the Lumix cameras have continuously improved and have a lot of other superior features since Olympus has not improved significantly in the last few years. So I don't know what to expect going forward from Olympus but if they don't improve and even regress in some areas, I can't see myself buying their newer cameras over the Panasonic equivalent.
I did the exact same thing with the experia 1 VI and the same San Disk 1TB Extreme Pro microSDXC card and formated it but after a short time, it does not recognize the card any more. Not even after restart the phone. Only thing that helps is to delet on laptop everything on the card, then insert to the phone again and then after recignizion, to format it again but then the same problem appears. Maybe some kind og "delete that specific system app cache" topis needs to be done? With the 512GB Samsung micro SD card it works perfectly.
that's weird... it might be worth checking or formatting the memory card on the computer with different settings to find out if it will work with some settings and not others. In my experience with some old cameras, they didn't support high capacity memory cards but when I formatted them on a computer with a different file allocation size then it would work on the camera, hence I was thinking if a similar solution could work here.
I am not a micro4thirds shooter, but there are sooo many small lenses out there now. Anyone, wanting a small portable kit, would be spoilt for choices. Thank you RAD
One of the main reasons I use micro four thirds is because of the smaller size and weight. What camera do you typically use?
@RadCameraMan I use a Hasselblad 503cx (v-series) film camera, coupled with 4 matching Zeiss lenses. My walk-around carry is the Nikon Zf, with those Voigtlander SLii-S Nikon F-mount lenses. I use them with the FTZ adapter. I don't like cameras that are too small simply for me they are impractical, and they don't fit my hands; I find the small controls fiddly to handle.
Your setup sounds expensive. I agree with smaller cameras being fiddly and less ergonomic and they usually have less physical buttons as well... I use the OM-1 for handheld video shooting and I can confirm that it is really uncomfortable. I like the E-M1X size and ergonomics but it lacks the video features that I want... whatever I choose I have to make some compromises.
@@RadCameraMan Yes, my Hasselblad kit looks expensive, but I carefully curated these over years. I started just before the covid pestilence, and continued throughout. The camera was bought as a package (Acute 42170, 503cx film camera, with CF 80mm f/2.8 lens, and A12ii film back). I must admit, this first package did cost me a fair bit, but I knew what I was getting into. I then bought the CF 50mm f/4, and a second film back, I then bought 2 further lenses: CF 120mm f/4 Makro-Planar and the CF 180mm f/4 telephoto. All came from a reseller over in Japan. I kept going back to him, as the service was excellent and the gear as advertised. Yes, RAD, I have spent enough on the Hasselblad dream kit and the only thing I might get (in addition), would be the new 907X CFV 100C back, so I experiment with the film body and these older Zeiss lenses. The Nikon Zf with the Voigtlander SLii-S lenses is not that bad. The camera itself was just a little above 2000 EURO. I bought that with 1 of the Voigtlander SLii-S first. Then bought the other lenses, one every 2 months thereafter. So overall, not that terrible in terms of cost. Each of these lenses cost roughly 550 EURO, and only bought recently. I am happy with both systems, as I think the Hasselblad kit fits how I look at the world. The Zf has the aesthetics and those Voigtlander lenses match the camera. I am happy with these.
I've been using the 15mm Body Cap lens quite a bit over the last year for portability. I never bought the fisheye. I had enough fisheye on GoPro and other action cams. If something is close, like around 5 ft. then I have a problem, but beyond 10' I'm ok.
Do you use it for video or photography?
@@RadCameraMan It changes. Lately I've been using it for video. It's the lens that I use on my GF3 for walk around. Because it is manual focus, It cannot track movement. Its depth of field covers a bit, but if something is changing distance, then forget it. The only good thing about it is that it takes little space beyond the camera itself. It is not generally a better setup than a cellphone, but I'm not using a cellphone lately, soo. . . .
Do you have to have a battery inside the grip when not externally powered?
No... I think this video answers your question: th-cam.com/video/mbck9-qoiN8/w-d-xo.htmlm15s
Thanks, you rock!
You received a cable holder that prevents damage to the HDMI and USB ports.
Can you please elaborate?
It’s difficult to completely lock the panning knob, and overall nothing seems to tighten well on my unit
Yes, this is how it is. On good video-heads there are typically two levers, one to lock the panning motion and one to control the drag of the panning motion, but this small video head does not have two separate knobs for these distinct functionalities due to its small size. You may need a bigger heavier video-head to have all the necessary functionality.
I have one question please: I suppose it can record on the both cards in normal quality together? (For exampe: 4K 50fps 10 bits)
Yes, it can. In fact it can even record 4K 120p to both cards at the same time. However it cannot use the All-Intra codec or RAW recording since those require high bitrates (800Mbps or more). I was looking at the price of this camera now and it is very cheap in comparison to when it was launched as well as in comparison to the GH7: amzn.to/3YWDTOt
In czech republic we can buy GH6 cheaper than GH5 II, so it gives GH6 advantage.
That's interesting. In UK the GH5 II is still cheaper than the GH6 and both the GH6 and GH5 II are cheaper than the very old GH5S: amzn.to/3YWDTOt

Absolutely mate. Thank you for your time researching and producing this video. In my opinion the OM1Mark II is overpriced for the advantages it offers over OM1Mark I and until the price differential reduces it's a no brainer.
Agreed, also depending on the intended use of this camera, it will also be competing with the Panasonic Lumix GH6 and GH7.
It's $600 off right now. I just bought one to have with my original OM-1.
@@highwayman1224 so how much does the mark 2 cost now without a lens?
@@RadCameraMan $1899.99
@@highwayman1224 that's still quite expensive relative to similar cameras in this category such as GH6 and GH7 and older Olympus cameras such as E-M1X and E-M1 III.
How do I use this as a webcam? I installed magic lantern. I need screen info gone. And need screen to stay on longer than 30 minutes
Go to Live View mode, connect to the HDMI port and adjust settings accordingly to hide the screen overlays
How do u record
Assuming that you have installed Magic Lantern on this camera then you can record using the set/ok button on the camera
What is the best micro sd card for xperia 1v ? If price is no object
In my opinion it is the "SanDisk Extreme Pro" amzn.to/3UE5l2b I have had a good experience with these memory cards so far, so I buy this brand/model for all my SD cards and Micro SD cards. To elaborate on my experience with this brand and model; I use the V30 SanDisk Extreme Pro SD card to record video footage at 300Mbps (4K 120fps) even though this card is only supposed to work at 240Mbps continuously. So because these cards over-perform in relation to their spec, I didn't waste money to upgrade to their V60 model yet. So they have two distinct advantages in my opinion: 1. these cards can over-perform which gives me some peace of mind when recording high bitrate videos for an extended period of time. 2. since these cards can over-perform in terms of speed, I didn't need to upgrade to their latest V60 model, which meant I saved some money since I already had many V30 cards of this brand and model which I have been able to use for a faster speed than it was designed for. Be aware that there are two very similarly named models, but the "SanDisk Extreme Pro" is the one which I recommend: - SanDisk Extreme - SanDisk Extreme Pro amzn.to/3UE5l2b
That panorama mode always bugged me it wasn’t in my EM5 Mark 3 and OM5. That’s one feature I would put to use.
I agree 100%
Great overview, thanks 👍 I’m really surprised that this video hasn’t got more views, given that there’s not many UVC 4K/60 capture devices on the market and that there’s a number of issues with the Elgato 4K X, at least with Apple Silicon. Cheers, Dave.
Thanks, I suspect that most streamers are satisfied with 1080p at 60fps. This might be due to the internet upload bandwidth requirement, but I think soon everyone will switch to 4K60 for video games and sport streaming.
Orderd the BG-E2N does it work with the canon eos 20d ??
I don't have the Canon EOS 20D camera to verify this but yes, according to the manual BG-E2N grip is compatible with Canon EOS 20D.
Brilliant. Thanks for the last section as would have opted for a 60D had you not pointed this out. Great presentation
Thank you, I am glad it was useful.
1:08 "without speedify" so you tested this on one connection? which connection? wifi or ethernet? this test seems supsicious at best.
There is a chart in the video with the results for both single connection and two connections with and without Speedify. One connection is Ethernet and the second connection is using WiFi. I admit the test is not perfect since I was not controlling the bandwidth of the two internet connections however Speedify always performed worse under all circumstances.
