My OM-1 at firmware 1.5 has 'intelligent' bird detection and tracking - it also tracks humans, trees, rocks, actually it decides for me what I need to photograph. Oh and in video mode it can't decide what to track so it does not track at all and forces me to use my Lumix G9II... Sorry for the ranting, we are all mislead and deveived by OM System.
I don't use human detection and tracking for this same reason, but this is where the OM-1 Mark II has made improvements which is good but I just can't afford to buy another camera at the moment.
Can I get clarification on whether the OM-1 Mark II Firmware is at 1.0. I have not been able to find anything on the OM website that shows the current OM-1 Mark II status. Thanks ahead for your assistance.
"* Details are subject to change", I like that note. My main interest is updates that improve current functionality, but perhaps we'll get a bit more once the marketing people have said its been delayed enough. I'd have no problem in paying for additional functionality as an upgrade, something perhaps they should be thinking about for their whole range, but not paying for fixing deficiencies in the current firmware..
I like to have more video features such as vertical video recording which is available on the lower end om-5 and usability improvements such as touch screen functionality for menu browsing as well as any auto-focus and stabilisation improvements that they are willing to give us 🤞
Unless the Live ND and GND features need more than 90 frames to use for computation and combining/stacking, the increased buffer necessity is not a valid argument. I'm curious if the buffer and system memory are different, and they increased the system memory, for OS operation, as well. I think I read comments where others had said it might be allocating the same RAM for different purposes, kind of pre-divided. However, I'm sure most of the features don't require the added buffer. It seems likely it's only needed for the increased capture rate of 200+ photos consecutively. I think the OM1 M2 seems more like a last minute shift by the company to put out a new product and net some extra profit while rebranding. If rumors and in-company statements are to be believed, firmware version 2.0 for the OM1 was ready months ago before they changed their minds on the release. It's the company's prerogative to do this. I just wonder if they thought about public sentiment and perception.
I think all customers have a similar take on the situation. I would really like to see someone install the OM-1 mark 2 firmware on the original OM-1 to validate what works and what doesn't since all of the hardware is identical apart from a larger buffer.
OM-System anounced that GND filters features of OM-1 II will not trickle down to OM-1 via firmware. Perhaps this is to make OM-1 II competitive but most likely this also requires better buffer.
That’s not to get wrapped up in buying every new Olympus Cambel it comes out I still have the M1X. Em 1 mk 2. Unless they’re changing the sensor it’s really not worth it
I have the E-M1X and the original OM-1 however I am not convinced that the OM-1 is better than the E-M1X. They have made some strides forward but they also took some steps backwards. The reason I upgraded to the OM-1 was the 4K60 video but apart from that I would say the E-M1X is much better overall.
Well, if there were a prize for getting everyone confused as to what hell they are were aiming for , the guys at OM should get the top prize. I am not quite sure if a change of sensor would make these any more functional than the original EM1 MKII.
Nice review, and I agree with your commentary on the features that could be done in firmware. One of the big questions is buffer, main memory and code storage the same or separate areas. I expect code storage is separate, and I would be more understanding if they said they didn't have the room for the firmware update. If buffer and main memory are the same, then I call bullshit on all of OM Systems claims that they need more memory to implement, most of the functionality changes are not something that would require a lot of memory, for instance the ability use SH2 at slower frame rates. But things like 14 bit high res, in tripod mode you are taking 8 shots, 16 for handheld, the buffer on the mark I will hold close to a hundred RAW images, tell me you need the space for over 70 RAW images. What I'm pissed about is that I believe they are lying to us. Owners of OM-1 bodies are the most loyal and OM Systems best customers. Lying to us about this is just going to piss us off, and from what I've heard from many others is they have no plans to upgrade, and some are even changing systems. The move to f/4 lenses drops the cost and weight for lenses to about the same as f/2.8 glass on MFT. With the incredible ISO levels available on modern full frame cameras, the reason to stay with MFT may be evaporating.
agreed 100%... regarding the memory and storage, my assumption is that code storage is separate to memory and buffer since it will be of a different type of memory i.e. permanent storage that gets loaded into the working memory at startup (this would require a small amount of storage whether when stored to ROM or when in RAM). Regarding working memory and buffer my assumption is that it doesn't matter whether they are the same physical memory unit or separate ones because even if they are the same physical unit, within the firmware program they will have separate permanent allocations, because if that wasn't the case then as soon as the camera was performing any memory intensive task the write speed would drop substantially. So it seems to me that the buffer is a separate designated allocation irrespective of whether it is on the same physical memory unit or not. As you mentioned, I also think that the buffer area is only used for some features that require stacking multiple photos (e.g. High Res & Live ND), or things like pre-capture, and writing to the SD card. As these are features that will pause all write functionality to the SD card until the task is completed which is why there is a multi-second delay when performing these operations. This further proves that the buffer and working memory are separate units. This is my theory anyway 😂
@@RadCameraMan Honestly the memory theory is as good as any others out there. My only thought of having both being out of the same RAM is that would be more efficient from an electronics and programming point of view. The sensor needs to dump the images to memory very quickly, so its like going to be working at bus level, or something close to it. The CPU is also going to need to work on that same data and will also likely be working with direct memory access. It would be much more efficient from a programming point of view for the CPU to tell the sensor, put this image in this location and then just access it directly. This would be needed for auto focus, subject detection, exposure, and a host of other things. Nice discussion, thank you.

I think you are overly optimistic as to what can be done in firmware. The focus improvements in particular may require the increased ram…even though the two cameras share the same processor. As a bird and wildlife photographer, the improvement in focus…both the ability to detect the subject using All focus points, and the ability to lock on to the eye through obstructions is pretty dramatic. I had the chance to test the Mkii and compare it to the original (which I have only owned for a year) before I made my decision. The Mkii might not increase my keeper rate, which was already high with the original, but it will certainly increase my confidence and decrease my frustration. Worth it. :)
OM System announced that they will provide an update for the original OM-1 which will bring the AF improvements to the OM-1 and it sounds like these improvements include what you are looking for... their exact statement is: "Improvement of some AF performance capabilities, such as S-AF and C-AF in all-target mode to improve capture of main subjects. Also, the G9ii does not have a CFExpress type B card which means the higher bitrate options require an external ssd or recorder. So I still think the GH6 is better in terms of video capabilities for my use case. The reason I still use the Olympus cameras instead of the GH6 is because the stabilisation is substantially better and the battery life is also substantially better. So I pick a camera to use depending on the shoot but I think all cameras these days are really good. You can't go wrong with any of them (we are spoilt, as even my phone has a better camera than cinema cameras from not too long ago).
@RadCameraMan thanks a lot for your detailed reply. My main usage of EM12 and the new one (G9ii or OM12) will be taking still images and having the video capabilities of the G9ii is big bonus to me. Of all the video I have watched on YT I haven't heard anything indicating overheating issues on G9ii
