Disaster Averted ?? - Bent Crank, Broken Parts | Oldsmobile 350 "In-Stock" Rebuild Part 5
#rebuild #budget #theautorefinery #instockrebuild
In wrapping up the lower end of this motor we encounter some road blocks but like all hot rodders, you just look over to the shelf and pick up the next good part in the lineup and keep on going! luckily we have a good selection of parts and it didn't stop us from buttoning up this lower end. Now onto the heads and top end of the motor!

Love watching the engine Build..
Awesome car!
Well good morning. So glad you like it!!! Please go ahead and check out some of our other cars. There may be more that you'll like. ...until next time. -steve
like others have commented.... this wont live long with the crank that tight. as an engine builder, this hurts to watch.
Good morning. We appreciate your input. Call this an experiment for the sake of science..... Thanks for sharing some of our pain. -steve
Man! That is a beautiful car.
Thank you! It is a head turner..the two tone really does it for me. Hopefully I can get it into some more videos in the future if people would like to see more of it. Might give me a reason to drive it more than I do! Thanks for watching, stick around you may see a video on it soon enough. -Joe
Steve…. Buddy…. That crank isn’t gonna last more than a minute when it’s running…. Either the caps are mismatched or it just needs to be line honed.
Yeah. we shall see. Not much to lose at this point. Like I said, I'm sure it does need to be line honed. The crank needs to be turned anyway. Wanna come over when we start it? -steve
@@theautorefinery Sure! When’s that going to be?
Not sure yet. what you're seeing is pretty much real time. More work to do,...
Steve, I’ve built more olds engines than one can count. No block will run long when one main cap is mismatched from another block. The reason the rotating assembly spins after switching rear main is now there is excessive bearing clearance. Once warm the engine will starve oil to next closest main and that bearing will seize and eventually spin destroying the crank. No doubt the line bore is bad not a bent crank. Don’t run the engine. Do it right or use a different block. And throw away the junk rope seal. Ford 312 Y-block neoprene seal works. Used it for years $14
Thanks so much for chiming in. While we appreciate your advice and respect your experience, please know that this is nothing more than an inexpensive experiment. A lesson to be learned for us all. Heck, if we were on TV and made a practice of hacking things together, well we'd be celebrities. Please refer to this first video in this little series for more clarity as to our ultimate objective. In the meantime, we thank you very much for taking the time to watch and for considering the fate of this particular engine. Stay Tuned, -steve
I own a 1975 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with the 350, I appreciate these videos. Thank you sir. 👑🎁💯
Hey there ! You're very welcome. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and for your comment. -steve
the last i knew was that you were building a low compression Olds 350 cid 2 barrel!?..not sure why you wouldnt be building the motor for Mr. Jones ??
The Mr. Jones engine will by no means conform to this $500 budget and only utilize the hard parts we have in stock. We intend to give that build much more respect. Thanks for tuning in. -steve
why are u building a motor thats not for Mr. Jones...why not work on Mr. Jones?
Nick. This is just a fun experiment. This is NOT an engine build that's intended to be anything more than that. -steve
Steve, I was wondering if you checked the thrust clearance as you didn't mention it in the video? I picked up a nos 800 cfm Holley Spread Bore for our W-30.
Hi there. yes we did check the thrust bearing clearance. we actually ended up doing some light sanding to increase that clearance a bit. Sometimes, I just work and don't record. other times, the video is so bad, Joe can't use it. Thanks for that question. -steve
i hate to say this but that engine looks like a smoke show coming
Do you really hate to say it? or is that what makes you tick? Either way, it's going to be a great party..... -steve
Mr. B. Here ! 🍩☕️👀😎👍 : I expected something like this, years ago at the Oldsmobile dealer I worked at , we have a old timer that was his thing, ( engines ) he made it look so easy, but he had worked on engines so long . Even guys who had been in the business where blow away, him used parts he had on hand on repairs. He and the owner had a history of trusts ! Thanks for the trip back in time . 🍩☕️👀😎👍🇺🇸
Mr. B!!!! It's fun. worst case scenario, it burns up right? Hope you're doing well. We have some cool ideas for the 2025 season. Talk soon, steve, joe, john
I always have my blocks line bored. I had a 455 that spun brgs until it was line bored. Also i mic the crank jrnls in 3 areas then i install the mains w brgs and torque them. Then mic them in the same patterns. This will give you the most accurate way to know the clearances..
When it comes to a build that matters, certainly. In this case we run it and hope for the best, Thanks for watching, -steve
helpfull tip,,,next time you open up a oil pump for a "rebuild"...prior to putting the cap back on add just a slight dab of grease to the gears... the suction it makes will do almost instant oil pickup for priming the motor
Yes, a great tip. I did pour some engine oil down it when i was done.
is that a real old school Mongoose BMX in the background
Yeah man! well i think they're called " mid-school" its a 1985 that I bought new! I'm that guy, still have my first lots of things. Check out our " garage tour " video. Thanks for watching. -steve
Looking good.
Hey there... starting to look like a car now . Thanks for watching. -steve
Great vid
Thanks very much for taking the time to watch. We appreciate that! We also appreciate the compliment! -steve
So, when did GM start using oval bushings? My 1972 Buick Skylark has round ones in both upper and lower A arms.
Good morning and Thank You for this question. This topic has been discussed many times and I have found one pretty clear explanation on a Chevelle site posted by a Mr. Lever. In his write up, he explains that there are essentially 3 types of lower A arms from 64-72. 1st design 64-66 both round bushings but larger in diameter 2nd design 66-72 both round bushings but smaller diameter 3rd design 66-72 round front / oval rear and also the GM replacement part issued for any service work. (I'll note that both '69 W-31's in the garage have oval rear lower bushings. ) I like this gentleman's clear and illustrated presentation on his website. - Lever Family Racing to check it out. Thanks for watching, I hope this helps. -steve
Its so close
Good morning. Step by step we are definitely getting somewhere. A far cry from where we started for sure. So close but yet so far. Now for the big $ stuff. hahaha Thanks as always for watching. -steve
Nice progress !! Really liked how you polished-up the backing plates. Never had that crossed my mind. What has been put on the front spindles to keep them from rusting?
Good morning. Yeah those wire wheels can work wonders on bare metal parts. To keep any bare metal parts from rusting, I've been mostly using PB Blaster MAX. Its a silicone based spray can just like the regular PB Blaster. If I'm out that, I'll use some of the old stand bye, Fluid Film. Thanks for taking the time to watch and also for your question. -steve
Looking great guys!
Hi Chad, really appreciate the compliment. It does feel good when we learn that folks like our work. Thanks for taking the time to watch and to comment. -steve
Feels so good to make it a roller!!!!
It really really does. Another big step.
I remember all these parts and pieces like it was yesterday !!!
These projects sure do burn a deep hole in your brain, don't they? -steve
Lookin' really good!! I don't know what it is about the chassis part of a restoration, but I love the crisp clean look. I was that way even as a kid looking through the magazines. Keep up the good I mean great work!
We really do appreciate this compliment! This is the life size model phase. Tons and tons of fun to do and look at! Thanks for watching and for playing along. -steve
So Steve, what is more rewarding? Working on the car or, hanging with your brother? My brother and I are pretty tight. Half the time we work on something, we get nothing done and wind up just hanging out.
well, now THAT is a great question. Let me say this, working on the cars is always a good time for me, hanging with Joe is always a good time for us, but man -o-man working on this car with him???? That's the stuff that true memories are made of. And we could not be more proud of what we've accomplished together, (both with the cars and the channel itself!) hence sharing with everyone and anyone that cares to check us out. It feels great to put that all in text and I Thank You for that opportunity. -steve
I get it.........................
Hey there. Thanks for checking in. Glad to hear that you're getting what we're up to here. We appreciate you taking the time to watch our series -steve
I like the whole theme Mr. Jones, An old man brought back to life. Carry on, looks great.
YES!!!! Now we're getting somewhere.!! I love that you're seeing our vision. We're doing our best!! Thanks for watching and helping keep the team morale high! -steve
Big J here, I’m not going to lie… at points I wanted to but him back into the ground!! Haha So glad Steve had the vision to think it was possible. It’s stunning in person. Can’t wait to show it off
i cant believe you went through all stuff with the frame but youre going to leave the body looking like shit
It’s about preserving, not necessarily restoring.
Ain’t it something? My vision is really coming to life! I won’t be like the next guy who repainted his car and has nothing to talk about! I’ll enjoy every moment of telling the story about this car when people can’t help but stop and ask, why? I appreciate you watching all this time and admiring our work, especially my brothers immense, intense skill set. -Joe
@@theautorefinery sad
wow !! just seeing this list of comments now . Too busy in the garage I guess. Thanks so much for watching and for playing along but.... if you think you hate it now, wait until you see it.... Mr. Dillnger, if you ask real nice, we may let you sit in Mr. Jones. just keep your feet on the mats and don't touch the glass! until next time.... -steve
Mr. Dillerger, Big J here. Not for nothing, I’m actually insulted at your comment. No disrespect to as I have no idea what you have built. But I feel like the amount of hours it took to preserve the original paint when welding ( because of the heat involved with welding. Which I’m sure you know) This build takes a certain discipline, and now when I stand and look at Mr. Jones shining new metal, mind you wavy. The hundreds of hours seem worth it. Oh #zerobondo
Mr. B. Here ! 🍩☕️👀😎👍 : Morning guys ! Do I feel your pain, front end work is a ( @#*% #& job ) . Go Bills 🦬🏈👀😎👍
Happy playoff weekend Mr.B. !!! I'll be rooting for the Bills for sure !!! Yeah, front end work can sometimes try ones patience hahahah but it's certainly nice to look at when it's coming together. until next time.... -steve
Yeah Mr. B, but I think we’re gaining on it! Sway bar with no motor is still a tough one!! Hahaha
Morning
Good morning to you too. -steve
This is such an oddity that Oldsmobile made 4 speed and auto cranks, for a few cents worth of machining they could have had one part number….
I know !!! How crazy right? The Pontiac 326.... drilled crank from factory, the Chevy 396..... drilled crank from factory. I'm happy enough with this solution. I will attempt to make this upgrade on every Olds Auto crank that passes through here. Thanks for checking this video out.... -steve
@ good plan!!! 4 Speed FTW
Do you have a part number for the new bearing? On my 1967 400. I switched over to a automatic transmission bushing from an old Buick and old bill from the 40s and 50s. Because the original roller bearing would just fall out of the crankshaft. It was about 3000s bigger than the roller bearing. Excellent work excellent video.
Thank You for taking the time to watch this video and for your question. I apologize for the delayed response. The bearing that I purchased is #MT3654T . Haven't used it yet, but it seems to be a nice fit. We may end up using a bushing instead - stay tuned for that update. -steve
The warranty on my Tremec trans requires a maximum of .005" runout. Are we good there?
Good morning and thanks for this question. First let me clarify that there will be no bearing or bushing installed into the hole we drilled. It's there to simply provide an air gap to allow for room for a non modified Muncie trans input shaft. The factory drilled hole at the back end of the crank , there to accommodate the snout of a torque converter, is what will receive the new bushing. All of that said, I guess I am operating under the assumption that this hole is as true and center as can be, having been drilled at the factory. But maybe I can set up a dial indicator and confirm this. Great question. Thanks for watching! -steve
very clever!!!
Glad you liked this! I thought of doing this a while ago. Now I had the need. Pretty pleased with how it came out. Thanks for watching and for the comment. -steve
Nice!! Good work! Smart idea!
Hey Thanks! It worked out pretty well!! Thanks for watching. We appreciate your time. -steve
Thats a good way to do it if you have a room full of cranks to drill. I did mine by hand and was simple. Good drill bits are a must. Enjoying the content.
Thanks again for taking the time to watch as always. Was a fun little project. From now on it'll be a simple step when building one of these. We appreciate that compliment! -steve
Mr. B. Here ! 🍩☕️👀😎👍 : Very cool on the calendar ☕️👀😎👍 . Class in session 🍎📝📏📓🎓🚀
Yeah man They're very cool!
Hey John... My buddy told me the crack between my hood & headlight cover he could repair it but it would show back up in a few years. The only way it could be Fixed correctly was to replace the Whole hood surround. Very Expensive even back in the Early '80s. Yikes lol I said to him with All the money I putting into the Repaint, Front Spoiler & Different rear cover "just repair it for now, I'll think about a Proper Fix later" He told me "Good Choice" lol Keep Pushin' On My Brother from another mother. ---- Hello Steve-O... I'm behind on a couple of Vids yet with Mr Jones. You're doin' Swell so far.
I have a 69 350 Olds. Going to build a 374 and put it in a C10. Love this truck!
OK! Please keep us posted on that project!!! Scotts C-10 is one nasty B! -steve
Will do, it's a pump gas build. Gentleman in Florida, Mark Remmel has done alot of R&D on Olds performance.
Nice core block. Keep truckin. Happy New Year 🍻
Yes for sure. This block is not in bad shape at all. Thanks for watching. -steve
John is definitely a craftsman. Beautiful work! I may need to tap into his advice with a little fiberglass work on my BMW fenders.
Anything anytime Randy!!!!
He's becoming very very proficient at the glass work. It's coming out great!!!! -steve
I have a couple comments. 1) epoxy bonds to fiberglass, fiberglass does not bond to epoxy. It will shear eventually. 2. When you roll this out you can press the aluminum loft stick into your laminate. It will give you a sanding guide when you pop it out. Should not any wax to release as the glass doesn’t stick to aluminum or nickel or stainless. 3. If you have any carbon steel you need to encapsulate or bond to, Daracane 8084 is a bonding agent. Paint on thin as a primer and then go to reg resins. The Daracane resin is a high quality resin. It’s a vinyl ester not a polyester. The 510 A or B meets a fire code. That’s what I use for my inside engine bays. Used to mix with antimony trioxide but I don’t think it’s required anymore Check with Ashlands. It looks to me you are well on your way and you have the right ideas. I will subscribe just to check your progress.
Thanks Ken! Yes I am aware of the no fiberglass over epoxy rule. The bonding strip was completely made out of fiberglass. Epoxy was one used as the bonding agent in between the fiberglass fender, and fiberglass bonding strip. Thanks for all the information, im really enjoying learning about the process!! Thank you for watching, and I promise to do the very best job I am able to do!
Nice work on the Corvette so far, very good content, not the look what I did while the camera was off 👍, Very in depth, content, you show what your doing and how you guy's do the work, not like the look what I did while the camera was off, The Auto Refinery is Top notch in my view, Thanks guy's!
Chris, thank you so much for the kind words!! Recording is a bit harder than I thought it would be. Still learning. Thanks for all the support, and stay tuned. I’m confident that this corvette is going to be saved
Wow. we really like getting compliments like this. We often discuss with each other, how the act of recording these videos is more difficult than the work itself. The vette is far and away in a very good place at the moment. Johns got a great handle on things !! Thanks for watching. -steve
