Good morning Gena. So glad you like how things are going. SOOO much more to do but we are certainly getting somewhere. Thanks for being a part of all of this. -steve & joe
Hey guys, GM painted the stripes right on top of the base color. They never primed on top of paint as far as I have seen. There is a 1969 Oldsmobile 442 W-43 ( non production aluminum engine ) with the same color combo as your W-31. Yellow with red stripes. There is a video of the car on TH-cam. Nice job on the paint guys. Keep it up. I very much look forward to seeing the driveline getting done. Take care, Anthony
Hey there !! Great to hear from you. Yes, that was our opinion as well. That 70 you're mention is bright yellow. Looks like sebring yellow ala Rallye 350 esque. Cool car - we have seen it speak soon. -steve
Mr. Jones looks great! I love the patina. My father is a retired Oldsmobile mechanic and I have his 69 “Glade Green 57’ Cutlass S” It has the original paint and I would love to do something similar to what you and Joe did here. You’re videos are very inspiring, Rock on!!! ~Steve G.
Well good morning and welcome aboard! We really appreciate you spending some of your Sunday morning to watch our channel. With all of our encouragement, we say go for it!! Experiment on the worst section and the best section. There's most likely going to be several methods that you'll end up employing. The truth is, it's fun, it's inexpensive and it's rewarding work. You can always paint in later on if you decide to, but you have only one shot to try and save or preserve what you have . Feel free to email us pictures of your progress, certainly keep us posted. and lease help spread the word . Thanks again -steve / joe
Hey Robert! Thanks for checking this video out! This car sure has come a long way. We started with 800 grit in some places that had some heavy haze or the repaint still hanging on. Followed that up with 1200 and then just stuck with meguairs m105 compound and then the polishing compound to get some gloss back. We had a couple different finishing glazes we used to make it pop a little more and give it some protection too. Really you can choose any wax or glaze for that final application and it’ll work just fine. If your car shines already I wouldn’t recommend the wet sanding if it’s not needed. More work than necessary in some cases. This paint just hasn’t been touched for over 30 years. -Joe
Hey fellas, big J. I wish I was around for this video, but Im at the beach, as you know, but the readers don’t. I would bet almost everything, that mr. Jones had red stripes painted over the basecoat. GM used lacquer all the way until the 80s. With lacquer Each coat melts into the previous one so there’s no need to prime in between coats. As it cures it dissolves into the previous coat less. I would assume the saffron yellow base was painted, allowed to dry enough to be taped and then sprayed red. Thats why the paint fades and doesnt flake off. Hahaha Im typing while watching and it appears were all on the same page!!!
PS.... Wyatt took my shirt an wants a hat (2) hes been showing everyone the videos... hes is one proud grandson... will send u pics personally. ❤Gena n Wyatt
You’re doing great!!! My Cutlass needs the same treatment!!! (I have a cut and polish done in 2018 which was the best money I spent on the whole car, in one day it when from dull to shiny)
Hey there! We appreciate you tuning in. yes yes,the 'ole cut and buff. Truth be told, The very original version of "The Auto Refinery" was a higher end detail shop. This was a lot of fun. Thanks for watching -steve
I’ve never seen BB gun marks as part of patina on a car.i have seen bullet holes with duct tape over them though🤣! Love those those oldsmobiles that’s what brought me to your channel, especially the 69s. Two 69s and two 72s,76,and a 85. Hope to have another one someday!
Yeah haha we were told directly that one the kids took to using the car for target practice. Crazy right?? So glad you found us! Sounds like you have a cool line up too. Please help spread the word. We need more viewers on board, Thank you so much for watching along. -steve
What a transformation! Awesome job, guys! Can't believe all the haters in the comments. Bottom line is that it's Joe's car and he can do with it whatever he desires. I, for one, am all about keeping them as original as possible. My '71 Cutlass is an all-original paint car and I plan to keep it that way. It has zero rust, but has door dings, scratches and other blemishes which I consider her personality and 53 year story. You can never get any of that back after you paint them...
Thank you! It really gave the car a whole new look. My whole vision is really coming together. When the car is out and on the road each area will be a talking point. Plenty to talk about and really show people what was done to save this thing from returning to the earth! Some may not see it and that’s fine, I understand shiny paint on some cars but most of the time it just hides poor body work. For what we want to do with this I don’t want to have to worry about chipping new paint or getting a door ding. Sounds like you got a very solid cool lookin Cutlass! The story is what it’s all about and you’re right, once you put a fresh coat of paint on it there’s no lifting it up to show what was underneath after all these years. -Joe
From the factory I thought they laid the stripes over the base color. Knowing that you could order strange color combinations from the factory, was the red the original stripe color then someone in the cars past painted them black?
Yes that was my opinion for years as well. It was only after seeing that particular w-31 with original paint and alternating spray gun patterns, that I began to second guess that a tad. For sure, when the car was repainted, those stripes were painted black. Some of the family of the original owner, THE Mr Jones, remember the car having black stripes. Thanks for taking time to watch and to participate in this conversation. -steve
Honestly with this car, I’d rather learn how to remove dents or make them better on my own than pay someone else. I attempted to knock one out of the passenger door with a dead blow and rubber mallet…probably need more suitable tools for precise dent removal ha! -Joe
Steve, Mr.Jones looks amazing. I wish I had the skill to save our original paint W-30. It needs a detailer that knows what they are doing. I tried and quit before I ruined it lol. Steve, I sent you you a pm on Classic Oldsmobile. Was wondering if you had check it?
Good evening. Great to learn when folks like what they see here. We NEED to know more about your W-30!!!! How can we help?? I haven't looked at forums in quite a while - we are spread fairly thin these days. Please feel free to email us with any private questions or comments. We will be sure to get back to you. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment/ -steve
It was with a fair amount of trepidation as I pondered your and Joes wanting to leave this W-31 au natural, actually kinda like it. I'd like to see someone knock out a lot of the dings if not all of them, should be quick and easy with no door cards etc installed. The red and yellow reminds me of that poisonous snake rhyme, red and yella kill a fella.....how appropriate ! Dr.Olds be a smilin....
Well well!!! so great to hear from you! do we have a potential convert amongst us ?? hahahah Believe me when I say, this car is peppered with dings and dents. What we're doing here is attempting do save a car that was otherwise left for dead. Thanks very much for taking the time to watch and to share that compliment. It's what helps keep us going. Hope to hear from you soon, -steve
They painted the stripes over the body color. Concerning the red hood: Back in the day when I was a teenager when these cars were still new-ish (early-mid 70's), I never saw a 69 442 with hood stripes. Not a single one. They all had pinstripes. The first time I saw a legit 69 442 with hood stripes was a 69 W-30 I looked at in the early 80's with a friend who was buying it. I think the only 69 cars that got hood stripes were the W-30, W-31 and W-32. Saffron with red stripes would be super bad ass and so 1969.
Good morning. !!! Thanks for watching and for commenting right away! 1- tend to agree, No primer under stripes - Red stripes in this case. 2- Yes ...The 442's received stripe RPO Y73 as a standard feature. This was simply the pin stripes that surrounded the edges of the raised "hump" area . 3- The solid hood stripe RPO W42. was reserved for the "W" cars. including the F-85 W-31 as those cars got the double hump hood included in the "W" option. So fun to geek out on this stuff. Have a great day -steve
mr. jones prob had red stripes..and was then changed to black stripes....maybe they were stickers...like the big firebird bird on the hoods of those cars?
Hi there - funny I just replied to someone asking the same question. No - no reference to stripe style or color on that tag as it was installed by Fisher body. It would have included body color and top color however, but not stripe color. Thanks for your question.' -steve
Hello there and Thanks for watching . The answer to your question, I'm sorry to say , is No. The cowl tags were actually installed at the Fisher body plant and showed only the information that pertained to the construction of the body assembly only. This would have included the interior but not the front clip. The front clip including the application of any stripes happened at the final assembly plant, not fisher body plant, therefore no record or code regarding the stripe style or color was ever on the fisher body tag. Thanks so much for your question!! -steve

Precisely!! Well put John !!! All things considered, I gather another way to save time would be to attend one of the many auctions and just write a check. But where's the hands on skill set in that?? We are happy to have you all on board and are glad to know that we host a comfortable setting for all to voice their opinion.
