I believe the innovation with the ditching of the money came directly from Ian O'Toole and I think he mentioned once in a podcast that he considered the refreshed UI in the Grail Games version he developed as an example of game development he was particularly proud of.
Thanks for the comparison! Somebody in the bgg forums pointed out that in the new edition it’s harder to see where you can get which goods because this information is not available directly on the map anymore without the tokens. What do you think?
I'd agree, but just a little. It means looking at two parts of the new board, the map and the investment grid, to get a full picture. In practice in the old one you'd look at multiple places, too: the map and the holdings in front of each player. I feel the old way might be a little more intuitive, but the new way makes setup faster. One way's not wholly better than the other, in my opinion.
Awesome comparison! Love this game! Totally agree with you on the money part. 👏😺
Ian O'Toole's style is really well applied to train games. I'm glad I was able to get this edition for cheap before it became impossible to get.
Same. Managed to score the expansion, too!
