    I'm 58. I've been listening to vinyl for 40 odd years. I've got some rare vinyl, picked up when it was cheap to buy and not realising it was rare. I've only ever bought what I wanted to listen to and never bought purely to sell on. I am at a point where I'd like some albums that were released in 2024, but as prices of new vinyl has risen, I've not done so. With children, a long term ill wife, a job that takes up a lot of my time, I don't get to listen to my collection as much as I'd like, and when I do, it has to be through headphones. I'm seriously thinking about selling off a fair chunk of my collection to buy a classic car to drive with my son. I have multiple copies of some albums, on both vinyl and CD. DSOTM and Tubular Bells spring to mind. I can only play one at a time! It does become a problem. I'm going to a record fair on Saturday, so I'll see whats there. I look for bootlegs more so thesedays as most studio recordings I have. And I never clean them, just store them well and they sound just as good as when I bought them!

    Nicely done! I have a collection (approx. 2,300 LPs and 3,500 CDs), but I do not consider myself a "collector" per se. Date of press, country of origin, color variations, etc. mean nothing to me, as the music is the most important element. Though I will make sure the LP/CD and cover are in good condition, and I do not want cut-outs. I recently did a purge of 500-600 CDs in anticipation of an impending move, but I gave all of them away to friends as record stores give you virtually nothing for them. I'd rather throw them out than accept $0.50 - $1.00 from a buyer who will mark them up considerably once they are in their possession. Not sure I've ever gone 30 days without buying something, but I commend you on your success in going 29 days. You didn't say, but I was wondering if you felt you missed out on anything, or if this is going to alter your music purchases moving forward? Cheers!

    • @giantorangerecords
      @giantorangerecords 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@AisForAliceBisForBob you make some good points here. Yes, the music is the most important aspect. I also give away a lot of albums, though I also trade for store credit as needed for more expensive items. I should definitely do a big purge at some point. I don’t feel like I missed out by not buying anything for 30 days since I have so many albums I’ve only played once. It takes me a while to go through all the music I do have. I also haven’t bought any albums this December. My next step will be curating a collection of just the essentials and trimming the fat, or stuff that I just don’t listen to anymore.

They were some young cats who chose to further their education rather than pursue a career in music. Sonics are top shelf garage Great pick there! That Uniques LP looks cool! Man I’d love to find that Gordian Knot LP! Big Star! Buzzcocks are so great! The Damned have so many wild albums that go beyond their punk origins. Def gonna check out the Losin Streaks! Th' Losin' Streaks are on Slovenly and gosh do those guys know a lot of about music! Super fun show and so glad I got to see a band from that lives so far away. I've been meaning to check out the Fapardokly and I'll say the main reason I even got the blind buy on the '80s Fankhauser is because I'm such a massive fan of the HMS Bounty LP, which is a pretty expensive one nowadays. But man, this trip will give me music to sift through for years to come. It's going to take a while to unpack all those LPs. I've listened to a few a coupla times, but mostly just gave each one a quick spin. The Tiffany Shade and CA Quintet are really awesome. Once you entire identity becomes your "COLLECTION"...it's time to reassess one's life priorities. I think you are asking all the right questions. What hole do these items fill in our lives? What are we really chasing when we chase "GRAILS"? Learn what really brings joy into your life, and chase that instead of shiny objects that don't bring any sort of actual happiness.

    • @giantorangerecords
      @giantorangerecords 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's part of my identity, but certainly not all of it. I'd say my biggest priorities are family and music, and vinyl happens to be my preferred and best sounding way to listen to music. But I also need to feed my family and spend quality time with my son. Sometimes we sit and listen to records together and that's great. I'm also a musician, and maybe this takes away from practicing guitar, vocals or piano, but maybe it helps in some ways. I guess it's an identity crisis of sorts. But yes, objects don't bring you joy, doing meaningful activities does.

    I have been there before. You have to get to a point where you need to change. It is the most stressful feeling I have dealt with personally. I think you will have more fun if you expand the kinds of music you listen to. I actually started having a great time once I started adding CDs into my rotation with my vinyl. I dont feel bad about spending too much because well, CDs, especially used are rather cheap. If there is an album I want to hear I will get a CD, and if I absolutely love it, then I will get it on vinyl. I was so wrapped up in which records are first press and all of that, but the real reason I like music in general is because its fun to listen to! After sitting there and thinking about why I collect music in the first place. What I realized is that all I actually want is the highest quality playback I can humanly hear. This has made it easier for me, because now I wont buy cheap used records.

    I have no other hobbies, so buying records is my main thing. I have almost 2000 lps, over 3300 45s and 400 12"singles. Plus around 500 CDs. I love music. Buying newer albums has slowed because of the price being close to $50 each, i still find some artists releasing under $30..but very few. Also im not a fan of most of todays popluar artists. I have a select few. I look for albums finally getting pressed on vinyl from the 90s early 2000s. For the most part i have everything else from the late 70s and all the 80s. Once in a great while something will pop up at a record store or fair that i forgot about and if its decently priced , i buy it. Last month we had a record fair in my city and found 10 albums (2 of which were replacements of my old worn out copies) and i only spent $18 for all. Too many people are gouging consumers and there are those who have unlimited spending, which i dont. No used album is worth $50 no matter who pressed it, which pressing it is 1st, 2nd ,20th. Less than 7 years ago i ordered uk only pressings of many 90s albums, or other countries and paid under 5 euros and shipping was cheap. Now those albums are priced over 30 to 150 euros. And international shipping is outrageous these days. I dont think any record store trying to stay afloat would tell you to stop buying. We are into the holidays and my money just needs to go towards other things. Besides that NOTHING good is being pressed at this time.

    Lots of truth in the video for those of us who've been collecting for years. I somehow managed to hang onto 70% of my formative vinyl collection and in good condition (seriously, I have records I've had since 1984 that play better than records I get off Discogs graded VG+). I got back into collecting just before the current boom so it's distressing to see so many records that should be sold for $10, $15 going for $30, $40 or more. Lots of records over graded. Just recently I had an online friendship with a dude who had over 4000 records and we were great friends and had similar tastes and opinions. We shared records, and did swaps in the mail. He died this summer and in a lot of ways that took the wind out of my sails. I see prices coming down ever so slightly, stuff on my wishlist coming up more often, but I just can't justify it. So I'm trying to hold the line. Listen to more of what I have.

    Dude, you have some killer records, West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band are a firm favourite. I halved my record collection and its now more of a revolving door. I try to mint up but also, when i find a new killer record, it makes some of the records i own in the same genre just that bit lamer so i tend to have mini clear outs at least once a year.
