Who are You, Really? Under Majora's Mask?
A sequel to one of the best games ever made was released back in 2000. How are the stakes raised? What direction does this direct sequel go? Off topic a bit, do you remember Y2K? How do you think this fits in? How many masks do you wear? Your true face, I wonder.... Who are you really?
Oh, a bunch of music was taken from Game Chops and all of there contributors, please use the links below if you'd like to listen to the full albums. I would have used just game music alone, but well... It's Nintendo so, ya know? Also, they just launched their own music app and I don't want to mess with that at all.

05:18 - Y2K and you
11:02 - Story (Buckle Up its a long bit, worth it though)
52:46 - Mid Vid Check Point
53:22 - Majora's Masking (Non Spoiler part)
1:13:58 - The perfect Cycle
1:20:00 - Ending Thoughts (Skip to here to avoid Story Spoilers)

Taking a Nostalgic Trip with Ocarina of Time
มุมมอง 14Kหลายเดือนก่อน
A game that laid down the fundamentals of the Zelda series and really gaming as a whole. Come take a trip with me back in time to look at this game from my point of view and see if it still holds up. Spoiler, it does, but in ways that are more about its legacy rather than what it is as a package. Ocarina of Time is a monolith in the world of gaming and is the masterpiece it was always meant to ...

From top to bottom, for better or worse, here we have Metroid 2 remade for modern handhelds? Well, modern enough back in 2017 when it was released. @@LeonKiskeof course! Sorry I usually fail to leave it at short comments and act normal about smt I'm very passionate about, I am actually extremely excited to come across more people who take the time and effort to create something so thoughtful and share their feelings about these pieces of art that mean the world to me too, it feels very personal and it's especially refreshing to see someone also get into the character writing aspects and themes like this. So once again I appreciate what you do and I'm looking forward to watching the ocarina of time one since that's my favorite game ever. Have a good day!

That said, I am glad that you took the time to not only comment once, but then again to add a bit more. I also enjoy when people take some time to really dive in to things like this, I've seen more than my fair share of these videos and what not, but it's always interesting to see what someone else might have taken away from the story and characters. @LeonKiske right, I've watched countless video essays on zelda I felt like I'd scoured all of youtube only a few months ago but still sometimes I'll stumble upon a project like this, where I can tell a lot of love and understanding went into it and that makes me really happy and meets my need to share these feelings I have for the art :)

    I really liked this interpretation it certainly feels the most accurate I think. Tatl was always a bitch that's true, like from the very beginning, but with how Link took it in strive there at the end when she sent him on his way, and when she said thank you as well, u wonder if she knew link wasn't gonna stay anyways. To me it seem like something she'd do, send him away before he can leave so she has all the power in that interaction. Considering how long they've lived this 3 days together, I wonder if they both got to talking. Maybe she knew that his heart was still in Hyrule. I'm not sticking up for her, I just think it's possible.

    Majora’s mask is both conveying and hiding the greatest occult secret in gaming history; something so secret that the common thinking individual will never ever know it, yet it reveals itself in plain sight.

    • @Nowsincehere
      @Nowsincehere 5 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      The secret is revealed on/in the moon, the four children symbolising the four winds or corners of the world which uphold the elements. The consuming of “masks” equal to the consumption of the physical structure that dissolves after death; the face, being the outer most layer of identity, and therefore the thing the individual believes themselves to be. In order to obtain all “masks”, Link must see through the eyes of the individuals affected, and in solving the problem he finds solution, he masters compassion and mercy, and that these “others” whom he helps are in some way a part of him or his nature. The fierce deity is the one who, having seen through the eyes of all other souls, realises itself as something above and beyond just the illusory nature of the “falling or failing moon” which, again, symbolises the dissolving or death of the outer most shell. The Moon and its 3 day timeline reveal something that occurs after living; a dream within a dream, where the individual is shown these fragmented and separated parts of themselves as something broken and in need of healing, they take on a quest, and when healing takes place, though the outcome still doesn’t change, a transcendence takes place. The fact the Sun has no reality in the game in the sense of its story, is revealing the mystical nature of the Moon, how dreams, others(faces/masks), and the sense of time are lucid and able to be manipulated as that they are not concrete. This game blends conscious, subconscious and unconscious together seamlessly, it speaks to the sensitive heart by way of allegory and reveals its story through perfected metaphor.

    • @LeonKiske
      @LeonKiske 5 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Now, this is what I like to see. More interpretation and thought on the deeper subject matter at hand. This is something that I certainly missed, though I feel like I was stratching at the surface of this thought experiment. I don't think I would have thought about bringing subconscious, unconscious, and dreams into the fold, but i might have to take another look. You bring up some interesting points and, even better, expanded the scope that one could use to lookat the game and it's story. Well done. Well done, indeed.

      @@LeonKiske To be fair, the message was poorly constructed by my own standards, which could and should be expanded on within several areas, though, I’m sure that will be left for another day. Truly, the recognition of your work ought to be commended here, by which I feel somewhat belligerent in failing to do so upon first instance. That said, congratulations on producing a quality video, and in demonstrating your own understanding and unique perspective. I’ve always enjoyed listening to what others see when it comes to certain games and just things in life in general, and when people reveal themselves as contemplative; able to form original thought and opinion as opposed to echoing common narratives, this makes for highly conscious conversation, and these things should be recognised and acknowledged.

    • @LeonKiske
      @LeonKiske 4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Using words typed on a screen can be not only difficult to discern but also choosing the right words can be tough. Unless you expertly craft each sentence, there is much that can be left up to the reader, in terms of how to take in that message. trust that I didn't think your words were poorly constructed. Though, as you mentioned they might not be up to your specific standards. To each their own. That said I appreciate the kind words. I also enjoy hearing other peoples perspectives and take a ways from media, in whatever form it may take. I also believe that this type of thing should be encouraged and used as a way to further conversations. All too often people tend to get shut in to whatever kind of rhetoric they feel is right and never really bother to question it or themselves. It is a difficult thing to do, but it should be taken up in an effort to better oneself. Now is that what i did here? I am unsure, but at the end of the day I said my piece and with any kind of luck, it will resonate with someone. Maybe. At any rate, thank you again for your input and well thought out ideas. As well as the compliments, I'll take any that I can get.

    I always do postman hat before couples mask, but that said... Fun fact, apparently the devs actually thought ahead for if you complete the Anju and Kafei quest in full multiple times. On repeats of it, it plays out exactly the same down to you getting the mask, but with one added line to the "Item Get" text box: "You already have one, but why not? Love is in the air!" They similarly thought ahead for the Romani and Cremia quest line. If you already did the quest and then complete it again, repeat completions will have Cremia give Link a hug and a textbox will say something along the lines of how warm Link feels and that he "could get used to this". Couple of really cute things they did that they really didn't need to do, but it's adorable that they did, in a way.

    • @LeonKiske

      I ended up doing the postman hat before getting the proper Kafei/Anju ending, but it wasn't on purpose. I accidentally set off the thief as he was getting closer to his hideout. So uhh, oops. I was unaware of those added lines for repeat completions. That's a nice little bit of added flavor. Link definitely could use an extra hug or two if you ask me.

Got heavy in World for a bit, but that was kinda it. I definitely don't really know a whole lot about the series and it's world, so a full on retrospective would be a bit out of the question for me. 2:07 And that's why I don't like what SS changed about the lore, with all that infinite reincarnation stuff. It makes everything seem routine and kindov pointlessly fated. Link and Zelda seem like eternal ships now too, which takes a lot of story-telling options away... meanwhile in Ocarina of Time not only did Link have a (Miyamoto-admitted) harem, but he probably got with the ranch girl, it didn't always have to be Zelda. I think Majora's Mask reinforces this with Cremia and everything you do for the sisters.

    • @LeonKiske
      @LeonKiske 5 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yea Skyward Sword and the lore it brought with it does kind of take away from series a bit. I can see what they wanted it to be, but I don't know that they hit the mark like they wanted. I don't usually get into the Link and Zelda shipping thing, everyone is gonna think whatever they want, but I do agree that the fated destiny thing kinda forces that pairing. For better or worse.

    Awesome video and written/narrated in an EXTREMELY charming tone. I was about the same age as you when Majora's Mask came out, and I really remember how much it resonated with me back then. I liked Ocarina of Time quite a bit, but Majora's Mask was one of the first times that made me start thinking about the concept of agency. I remember talking with friends who had played it too at school when it first came out, and was surprised how their thoughts on the game didn't match my own. They found it confusing because of the 3 day time limit and Link should have just gone back to Hyrule as soon as he got the Ocarina back. At the time I just countered Link stayed cause he wanted to keep his promise (and get his horse back lol), but I started to think about what was going on in Link's head that whole time a lot more. How this quest was one that was pretty thankless, that him saving some people meant not being able to save others, and that he had considerably less guidance compared to his last adventure. At some point, I'd tried doing "save everyone" runs only to fail each time and that REALLY upset me for a while. I felt like I wasn't good enough, which made me feel like I was making Link feel like he wasn't good enough. I suppose the best way I could put it is that while Ocarina of Time made me feel like being a hero blessed by the divine to help destroy evil, Majora's Mask made me feel like I was the only one who could help Link because no one else would, and that thought stuck with me for way longer than what I got from Ocarina of Time.

    • @LeonKiske
      @LeonKiske 5 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      To be honest, I didn't, or rather wasn't able to at the time, wrap my head around a lot of what Majora's Mask was trying to say. I think most kids felt the same way. That said, there are people out there who got that feeling like you did, like I did. Something was off. Every other Zelda up to this point was pretty clear-cut. A simple straightforward adventure that didn't really ask to much of it players. I also had friends that didn't quite feel the same way I did, and that whole "go back to Hyrule" thing was definitely a talking point. I think it's just a lack of literacy, both literal and media, plus maybe being just a bit too young that caused that disconnect back then. But I dunno maybe that's just me. As far as trying to save everyone verses saving Link? I do think that is 100% the take away. This quest is infinitely more thankless than him saving Hyrule. Which I guess at this point he might be used to. I think that's why this game sticks out for a lot of people. Outside of the sad tone, the saddest part is Link just trying to do his best, even when no one is watching. Thanks for sticking around and sharing your thoughts. Oh and for the kind words, glad you enjoyed it.

      In my opinion, what makes this stand out over the others is just how personal and intimate it is. Majora's Mask makes you slow down and experience every area a handful of times over. It really wants you to explore and get to know it like the back of your hand.

  • @BlueMagicite

    Hmmm, while Y2K scares were pretty common in the United States, it'd be more accurate to bring in the 90s economic bubble popping in Japan that left a lot of people disillusioned after years living with the economic success that the nation experienced in the 70s and 80s. Lots of people had to readjust their lives to something less comfortable and the stories you heard regarding these changes were shockingly common. One of my favorite shows (and technically one of the major influences for MM's mood and tone), Evangelion, even frames this anxiety and relative bleakness as its main story scenario. It needs to be emphasized that Japan's economic turnaround following WWII to where it landed in the late 70s and 80s was seen as a miracle in the eyes of the older generation. On the other hand, it brought in anxieties of the inevitable economic bust that was constantly on the edge of everyone's mind following such miraculous economic success. Once the 90s hit and the economy went pretty bad, the rose-tinted glasses were shattered and everyone was left to the winds in regards to what they should do. In the United States, I would probably compare this to what a lot of people were feeling after the 2008 recession. So while Y2K scares were certainly a thing, the fear and uncertainty of what the next few years would be was a fear that many people, especially kids at the time, felt in Japan. Add in how the older generation was constantly saying its up to the younger folks to dig everyone out of that mess and now you have the weight of the world thrown in to the anxiety over the future.

    • @LeonKiske
      @LeonKiske 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      An interesting perspective. I don't exactly have any experience to draw on for the economic crisis of Japan during those times. I have heard of it. In fact, to my knowledge, Frieza from DragonBall was supposed to be some kind of representation of this exact thing. Plus as you mentioned Evangelion hits on these themes and ideas. So, you aren't wrong about these impacts. However, and this is key, I didn't experience any of that. I am sure had it been a thing that I lived through it would have informed my takes on the messages and themes found in this game. Where the inspiration for it came from and all of that. We are our experiences, or something like that anyway. I appreciate the insight.

      It is a problem for sure. DB and really any Shonen show have this problem. Sometimes you just need to go along for the ride.... for better or worse.

      The real problem with franchises like dragon ball is the question of how to “show don’t tell” that everyone is getting stronger. Like, at the beginning of the series nearly every main character can move faster than the normal human eye can see. So, when we get later in the series when everyone is supposedly 1,00,000,000,000,000,000 time faster, the only cue you get for that is the show going “Trust me bro”.

    Holy crap that transition from Y2K to Zelda. So well done! I do have to admit, this wasn't my favorite Zelda game. That being said, the music from this game, outstandingly well done. On the subject of masking, very very very very much a thing I do. All people to some degree I'm sure. But I would have never thought about this game in that light. This game is rather deep and super sad at times.

    • @LeonKiske

      In a perfect world I would have released the video on Mew Years Eve, but uhh life got in the way, as it often does. But yea, that countdown to "doom" was something that I remember back in 1999. Maybe played up a bit here, but the intent was the same. It matched too well with the moon crashing down to be a coincidence. Or at least I think so. Masking is a necessary tool in the adult world. Hell, even in a child's world. Using masks in this game as a way to help discover who you are is a great idea. I have to wonder if that was the intent when they were making the story. We will probably never really know. This game is one that I didn't really get as a kid, but now? Well, about an hour and a half long explanation about a theory I have would say it grew on me. Just a bit. Good to see ya again, thanks for the compliment on that transition. Glad it struck a cord.

    I like Other M. I actually think that for Metroid 6 they should pull ideas for gameplay from this one. Obviously, refining it to be better control wise but for the mainline series to grow, I don’t think it should stay 2D. It needs to go 3D and the only one that’s part of the mainline that kinda made this attempt was Other M. There are some good qualities to this game, they just need to get it right.

    • @LeonKiske
      @LeonKiske 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      A rare type for sure. Not a lot of people show Other M any kind of love so that's refreshing to see. As far as growth for the franchise? I dunno. Going 3D would add a lot, but I don't think it would be a necessity. Other games of this type are still doing well and 2D has its advantages. That said, if they manage to pull it off, I don't see any harm in making that leap. Been saying for a while that Samus is really one of the only Nintendo characters that could do a Devil May Cry type game and how that could fit the overall esthetic. But that may be a bridge too far for some fans, sooo who knows.

I sure didn't just add that apostrophe because I wasn't fully paying attention to what I was doing. No way. Uhh, at any rate, thanks for taking some time to watch and even leaving an English lesson. The Hero's shade is not a stalfoes, why do you think he is?

    • @LeonKiske
      @LeonKiske 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well, I mean, he's a skeleton in armor who very likely died in the lost forest fkr whatever reason. The Heros shade has vines and other foliage in and on his armor that would indicate his body was never found, probably because he died in the lost woods. Also, it's the fate of any one person who dies in said woods. Now, I will say, because of some Triforce shenanigans, he might have been able to protect himself from the full on curse of the woods. So there is that I suppose. But I mean, come on, it would be fitting for his character to do all the things he was able to do. Go back to the woods, where he probably felt was as close a home as anything could be, and live out whatever life he had left. Is it perfect? No, but it's fitting with the lore the game has given us. I mean, unless there is an actual cannon explanation, but as far as I know, there isn't.

    • @josiahtheobald689
      @josiahtheobald689 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @LeonKiske he's not a skeleton, only his face look's like bone, the rest of him look's like rotting flesh that fade's in an out with only his weapons an armor being physical. I have to say i disagree with your conclusion friend, he look's more akin to a wraith to me.

    • @LeonKiske
      @LeonKiske 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @josiahtheobald689 hey it's cool to disagree. Not like it's that important overall to the grander narrative at play. That said, it makes the most sense that he would find a way to extend his life beyond natural means because of how everything went down. Working with what exists in the game series stalfos exist, poes exist, but I haven't seen any wraith like entities. Or at least nothing like what the heros shade became. Feel free to disagree, but let's not pretend that this is a super known thing. Until something official gets said any theory is valid. Plus, I mean, I saw that Zeltik video, too. Fun and interesting, but not the end all, be all on the subject. That said, thanks for hanging around. No need to get so hot under the collar about this, yea?

  • @JasonBoyce

    I’m pretty sure if Link’s Awakening had come out on SNES, Miyamoto would have been way more involved, and would have prevented a lot of the really interesting stuff that the team did, like be able to combine items on the face buttons since one button always had to be for the sword, or required it be set in Hyrule and lose the dream-like premise, etc.

    • @LeonKiske
      @LeonKiske 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You're not wrong. For as talented as Miyamoto is, he seems to be kinda "stuck" in his ways. If he were involved, who knows what kind of end product we would have gotten. For what it's worth, I think this game is charming because it went in a wild direction compared to the others. Very unique in it's plot and location. In a lot of ways kinda like Majora and I think that serves the series well.
