That example of shinesparking you used is actually a sequence break to get the super missiles early since you can do it as soon as you have the speed boost and high jump boots. It allows you to skip the giant wasp boss entirely.

When Samus gets fully powered up on the pirate ship, that always hits me right in the feels. Also I always called the Rinkos in the original cheerios, and as the new ones are huge so I can get behind atomic cheerios, I like that. Awesome video!

Metroid 2 was my introduction to the serie and will always have a special place in my heart, but my favorite was Fusion until Dread came out. I respect your willingness to say you like Other M. It's been a long time since I tried it, and I feel like I will get to it eventually. Maybe my thoughts have changed. Fusion has lots of color to it. I would say even more than Zero Mission. I do like the heavy shaded look in Zero Mission more overall, though. That comic book aesthetic is cool.
I'm real late, but as a metroid vet - you had a hardware issue or an emulation issue; I never had an issue with diagonal missiles on either my original GBA copy or the version that came loaded on my 3DS
Yea, I found out, not too much later, that it was an issue on my end. Slap a big oops on that one. Turns out the emulator and my controller where not getting along very well. So that one was on me.
When you talk about the original development team for Metroid, you forgot to mention Gunpei Yokoi, who had been involved with the series as the creator until he died in a car accident.
Yokoi is the father of Metroid, no doubt. Unfortunately, due to the accident he was in,he was not a part of the development of Zero Mission outside of it being based on the original. I do believe there is a special credit for him, which is rightly placed, but is about it.
I am sure there are a ton of things someone can do, if you take the time to find them out. Personally I haven't taken the deep plunge into the shortcuts and sequence breaks that you might be able to do. I'm sure speedrunners and the like have absolutely broken this game in half. I should look into that.
Yea, I think it was my controller. I tried playing other games with it and it was going all kinds of crazy. The shoulders just weren't working right. Guess I'll have to find a new one.
I think you forgot Samus return is technically the next game in the timeline for mainline 2D games, and then you have to decide if AM2R will get a mention or video...
In terms of releases, yes, Samus Returns was released before Dread. But that's a remake. It was a good one for sure, but it wasn't a whole new title in the series. Dread was the next brand new game that fits within the timeline. I am planning to get Samus Returns a video as well as AM2R, along with some other fan made projects in their own video at some point. SR, when I can capture good 3DS footage and the Metroid Fan game, round up after I play a good handful.
@@LeonKiske you say that on a video you did for zero mission, which is also a remake, much like SR, sure SR was a lesser remake than ZM, but if you gonna be consistent... Not that I'm complaining, any video is welcomed and dread was very well made...
I get what you're saying. Not trying to be argumentative or nothing, and maybe I misinterpreted what you were saying. So for that, my bad I just don't have a great means to make a video surrounding SR. No good way to get footage right now is all. I do plan on getting back to SR when I am able. For now though, the best way to push forward is with Dread. SR is good and an important part of the Metroid saga in terms of releases. It more or less was the spark needed to get it back on people's minds.
Ik this is an older vid now... Buuuut my copies of Fusion and Zero Mission work for angle missiles BUT I also have them on emulator, where you get one or the other, not both.... Unknown rn if this is an issue with poor emulation or if this was some incredibly poorly thought out anti-piracy measure (poorly thought out because: the games are beatable without diag missiles... They aren't really even hard for it (afaik it only stops the fusion cheese to get the sequence break easter egg without having to do the sequence break)
Firstly, thanks for stopping in and taking some time to check out the video. Secondly, you are right about the diag misses. As it turns out the emulator I was running had some issues with the controller I was using, or the controller itself was not working correctly with the shoulder buttons. So that was on me. I thought it was a limitation of the game, but it wasn't. I ended up correcting my misunderstanding in another video, though I can't recall which one that was. I only found out later because I fired up the game using the switch and felt really dumb about not double checking it before hand. Anyways, thanks for taking some time to check it out and add in some possible other scenarios. Turns out it was just a busted controller.
Nice touch with the Chozo font. However, you used the wrong grammar. (Example, normal letters would be like "Hadar sen olmen", while Chozo grammar is nore like "HaDaR sEn OlMeN", making the font fit in to itself.
Huh, I had no clue. I just typed the sentence out. Didn't realize there was a proper way to do that. Also, the font I used, I don't think it does upper and lower case. I'll have to keep that in mind moving forward if I find a font that plays nice.
@@LeonKiske i see. I thought it was upper and lower because the 1st triangle on esch word was different than the others. I think "the orpheon" made a video about it ("learn how to speak and write chozo frm metroid dread). I really enjoyed the video, by the way.
Zero mission is an amazing game, and honestly while I prefer Fusion it is amazing how well they hold up. I do want to note however that in the US yes Zero MIssion is the first game to have difficulties but actually Fusion did it first with it's Japanese release.
Yea, both those games are fantastic and they hold up really well today. I would play either if the urge strikes. As far as the difficulty choice goes. Yea, you are right. The Japanese versions had that option for a lot longer. For some reason the US market often got the hard version of games as the base difficulty. Not sure why exactly, but it's just another one of those odd facts. So, it was kind of an odd thing to have pop up for the first time as a kid, ya know?
@@LeonKiske Wait, Fusion difficulty in the US was just hard mode? I don't think that's the case because hard mode in both Fusion/ZM give you HALF of what a pickup should give unless that's the difficult for Fusion without taking half of what the pickups give. Either way, yeah, for me as a kid I always played Zero Mission on Easy. It wasn't till I was an adult already I decided to try Normal and was like "Ooh, I can do this!" Though I can't lie Hard on ZM was bull. I couldn't get past mother brain and she's already a nightmare lol Also I think I should mention I'm pretty sure JP VS US we usually got the easier games. IIRC Fire Emblem was made easier.
@RetroNerdyGamer I'd have to look up the specifics for Fusion about the hard mode thing specifically. To be honest, I'm running off of what I remember hearing in a few videos and some articles. I probably should have double-checked that. But yea, ZM on hard mode is no joke. Hard is the correct way to describe that experience. It was something I did once and decided that was enough. On the topic of JP v US, difficulty swaps. It wasn't every game, but more than you would expect, it was altered to be harder for the US. Oftentimes, it was a 3rd part developer. Places like Capcom, Konami, and the like. Nintendo almost never did that, but Metroid might be the exception. Nowadays, it isn't really a thing. I think it was a think because of the rental market from places like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. They didn't want kids to rent a game, crush it in a weekend and then not buy it.
Looking into it, Fusion is at the normal difficulty for the US and European release. Japan is the only one that has the hard mode and an easy mode for some reason.
I feel ya, I will get to it, I just don't have a great way to get video footage of Samus Returns. Once I do, though, I will definitely come back to it. It's important for a lot of reasons.
That is going to be its own thing, along with, if I can find some good ones, other fan made variations of the older games. I got plans for them, Trust.
@@LeonKiske Oh that's something to look forward to! Other than AM2R, I only know about Prime 2D I think. 2D Metroid fan projects were popping up everywhere in the late 00's and early 2010's. But only AM2R actually got finished. It's name was actually a joke about how it was yet another metroid 2 remake, among many others of the time 😆
To the developers' credit, they did a great job from start to finish. When I do get to that, it's going to take up a good chunk of the run time, I'm sure.
1:07 Why go back to this? Because even though I know zero mission is the better game, I still have nostalgia for the first game, seeing as I grew up with it
Indeed, I did say that would be a reason to play the original still. Think I said something along the lines of "if you have a pure love of that game." Which I totally understand and respect. We're it not for the original we wouldn't have the others in the series.
I appreciate it. I was planing on getting to Other M when I get to the 3d games. Figured I would toss it in with Prime series. I know they aren't very similar in terms of tone, but that was my thought process.
@@LeonKiske na u said it right. I spelled it wrong or I think that’s who he is in prime idk but what I was saying is if it’s the remake, (I mean Ridley wasn’t mecha in Metroid) shouldn’t he be regular as well?
Yea, Zero Mission is an odd one it has both a regular Ridley and a Mecha version. You are right though. Ridley is Meta in Prime, and I think that's the only time? There might be a few others where Ridley gets the Meta treatment. I might be wrong on that one.
@@LeonKiske yea I just completed prime remastered two days ago n it said meta. Lol that’s a mystery if prime is the only one or not. But hey great vid, love ya channel.
I love Zero Mission. HOWEVER, it does NOT match the feelings of isolation and helplessness the original game gives you. It's also pretty easy. I still like both, and I'll play the one I'm in the mood for.
It has its own charm for sure. Lots of it probably has to do with the use of backgrounds instead of just a plain black screen. Because of all the detail and color the feelings of isolation and helplessness are lessened. Add to that the cutscenes, and you got a recipe for more engagement from the player in a way that takes you out of the game in a way. Plus, it's a remake, so if you played the original you kind of know what's at stake. Still a fun time though. Speaking of, you've been I'm and out of my videos all day. Thanks for giving my channel some of your time. Hope you enjoyed it so far.
It is. The flexibility that Zero Mission offers in that regard is one of my favorite aspects of thr bomb jump. Much easier to control and use it a large degree.
Honestly if I had one genuine frustration with metroid it would be how little gameplay is left after finally being powered up 100% … Barely giving you the opportunity to use your full potential.
That is a fair point. Not all games do this, but a good few do, where If you collect everything you get some sort of Super boss. That would be fun in a Metroid game for sure. Weirdly though Metroid is all about going fast, or at least it became that over time.
I appreciate it. I'm glad it struck a chord with ya. Might be hard to tell, but I also enjoy Metroid. It's got a whole feeling all its own, ya know? Thanks for the kind words and spending some time here.
Huh. Despite all the other Metroid games filling in gaps and stuff (aren't the Prime Trilogy, Hunters, & Federation Force all supposed to occur between Metroid 1/Zero Mission and Metroid 2/Samus Returns, akin to how the Street Fighter ZERO/Alpha trilogy all occur between Street Fighter 1&2?) That means that explicitly among the mainline stuff, there's an unholy 19 year gap between 2002's Fusion (Metroid 4) and 2021's Metroid Dread (Metroid 5). They should've made it a full two decades and released Dread last year. 😏😏😏 Continuity...such a wonky, fickle beast.😮😮😮
That is correct. Just under 20 years between numbered sequels 4 and 5. It's. Crazy to think about. The only other series that Nintendo owns that's still in a near 2 decade long drought it F-Zero
That example of shinesparking you used is actually a sequence break to get the super missiles early since you can do it as soon as you have the speed boost and high jump boots. It allows you to skip the giant wasp boss entirely.
Ahhh I had not thought about it that way. You are 100% right, though. I'll have to try that out the next time I get the itch to play.
True but that's such a fun battle.

Yokoi is the father of Metroid, no doubt. Unfortunately, due to the accident he was in,he was not a part of the development of Zero Mission outside of it being based on the original. I do believe there is a special credit for him, which is rightly placed, but is about it.
Bruh with how I dig these videos, Caterpillar should be naming their excavators after ME.
You got some grade A puns. But I appreciate the positivity!
You don't even need the long beam the amount of shortcutsin this game are nuts
I am sure there are a ton of things someone can do, if you take the time to find them out. Personally I haven't taken the deep plunge into the shortcuts and sequence breaks that you might be able to do. I'm sure speedrunners and the like have absolutely broken this game in half. I should look into that.
Let’s go!
Hell yea!
I've never had an issue with diagonal aiming in Fusion or ZM, might be your emulator settings. Or maybe your controller.
So for that, my bad
I just don't have a great means to make a video surrounding SR.
It's all good. I'll have to take some time to check out that video. See what its about.
I appreciate the compliment. Glad you enjoyed the video.
I couldn't get past mother brain and she's already a nightmare lol
Also I think I should mention I'm pretty sure JP VS US we usually got the easier games.
@@LeonKiske Yeah, I guess it was to make it a better release for them since they had to wait?
Yeah, whatever controller you used for Fusion had to have been wonky. I played Fusion on my 2DS XL and never had trouble.
Alright, so it was just me. Good to know. Gonna have to pick up a new controller then.
AM2R next?
Not quite. I'm doing Dread next. I'll circle back to AM2R along with other notable fan projects and rom hacks.
That's the plan for now anyways
I'm looking forward to the Dread video, but I'm a little disappointed you're skipping Samus Returns. The gameplay and story lead directly to Dread
I feel ya, I will get to it, I just don't have a great way to get video footage of Samus Returns. Once I do, though, I will definitely come back to it. It's important for a lot of reasons.
@@LeonKiske What about AM2R 👀
Loving your stuff but why aren't you doing Other M
I appreciate it. I was planing on getting to Other M when I get to the 3d games. Figured I would toss it in with Prime series. I know they aren't very similar in terms of tone, but that was my thought process.
@@LeonKiske gotcha
@@LeonKiske Other M was developed by an outside studio so it does make sense to do it with the prime trilogy
You know, I wasn't even thinking about in that way, but that also makes sense. Thanks for that.
Meta Ridley? In the beginning? Wasn’t he meta after the first mission?
I might not have enunciated it enough, I was trying to say Mecha-Ridley.
I appreciate it. Look forward to seeing more of your thoughts in the future.
I would like to see you do an ocarina of time review one day
Ahhh, a classic if ever there was one. I was thinking about getting to Zelda at some point. I'll add that to the list. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@LeonKiske Thank you for replying 👍
No need to thank. I've been combing over the comments looking for someone to recommend something, and you just happen to be the first!
Metroid was such a groundbreaking game that introduced so many staples to the gaming community such….. oh……. Oh god I gotta take shit.
You can angle bomb jump in Super as well bit it's haaaaard.
It is. The flexibility that Zero Mission offers in that regard is one of my favorite aspects of thr bomb jump. Much easier to control and use it a large degree.
You were correct. Zero-ith mission is how you say it with proper grammar
Well at least I wasn't wrong on some level. Thanks for the confirm.
@@LeonKiske the way I always remember is the 0th law of robotics from MegaMan and other media like irobot
That's not a bad way to remember that. Nice.
Honestly if I had one genuine frustration with metroid it would be how little gameplay is left after finally being powered up
100% … Barely giving you the opportunity to use your full potential.
That is a fair point. Not all games do this, but a good few do, where If you collect everything you get some sort of Super boss.
That would be fun in a Metroid game for sure. Weirdly though Metroid is all about going fast, or at least it became that over time.
@@LeonKiske Just to be clear … i Effing love metroid. Your series is a great dive into the franchise
I appreciate it. I'm glad it struck a chord with ya.
Might be hard to tell, but I also enjoy Metroid. It's got a whole feeling all its own, ya know? Thanks for the kind words and spending some time here.
Metroid is cool
Indeed
26:07 Surprisingly flabby
Weirdly enough you are the second person to say this, almost word for word with, roughly, that same timestamp.
@@LeonKiske It's flabby, though
I mean, if you say so. Everyone got their thing I guess.
Continuity...such a wonky, fickle beast.😮😮😮
That is correct. Just under 20 years between numbered sequels 4 and 5. It's. Crazy to think about. The only other series that Nintendo owns that's still in a near 2 decade long drought it F-Zero
Do prime next
I'll be getting to Prime.in due time. Gotta run through it again and actually get footage for it.
Zero Mission rivals the Resident Evil remake as the definitive remake. It totally replaces the original and obsoletes it.
Indeed, it does. You'd have to be real interested in the origins of the franchise to go back and play the original of either franchise.
This another another comment
Killing me smalls.
This is another comment 😂
