I just replayed the majora boss half an hour ago and now I suddenly get this in my feed??? I knew our phones listened but damn I didn't know it was this extreme
A decompiled N64 version with the 3DS models, a 4K texture pack, ray tracing and the new quality of life features from the 3DS version (see Nerrel's video) would be a wet dream for sure
It's funny after I found out about this I saw Nerrel's video and I was astounded by what other stuff he found out. Then I noticed he was a part of the whole thing, so it made sense. I look forward to seeing what else can come from this.
You're not wrong. SoH is cool and really let's you get in the nitty gritty of the game. This Recomp is more meant for a quick plug and play type deal. Just give it the rom and go.
and mod ability! I always wished all the other regional towns, especially the neglected Goron village, had the depth of npcs and scheduling that Clock Town has.
@@LeonKiske if you haven't check out the features of the Ship Of Harkinian oot pc port. by now it has a full built in randomizer and all kinds of stuff.
I just will never get used to seeing MM or OOT running at 60 FPS and higher. My eyes are so used to 24 FPS. Still incredible and nice that you can play it at any frame rate
I haven't thought about Majora's Mask in years. Yesterday, I went on a trip, and decide to bring my old 3DS. I remembered I had Majora's Mask 3D for it, and planned on playing it again. Never spoke about it out loud to anyone. Today, I get this recommended. I'm starting to get paranoid.
It is a bit eerie isn't it? I feel I've done much the same only for something to "pick up" my thoughts and then show me an ad or video or just something for what was a very internal thought. Sorry that happened to ya, but uhh hey thanks for stopping in all the same.
I did hear about that. It was, more or less, the back bone for how this recomp tool works. From what I saw SoH let's you get real deep in the woods with how you want to customize the game and it is impressive. This tool is, as far as I know anyway, meant to be a plug and play type deal. Just load up and go. Kinda like the difference between a console game and a PC game. One you have to install and get working for your custom rig, the other you just slap a cart/disc into (back around the 360 and ps3 days and older) and go. Ya know?
Don't think they got gyro aiming supported yet for MM sadly on Ship of Harkinian, but it's very well done on OoT. Installed a couple texture packs and model replacements to get the 3DS NPCs and such, and very high quality models of Young/Adult Link. Pretty much feels like a direct remaster like how they remastered Tomb Raider 1-3
I played so much of those old N64 wrestling games. No Mercy was a staple when hanging out with some friends on a weekend night. If this thing gains widespread attention and people band together I would like to think they can get just about every game in the library running eventually. Here's hoping.
My God, I've played this game so many times since release and this feels fresh and new. Who would've thought the framerate would make it look like a whole new game.
Yea, I was kinda blown away busy that as well. Toss in left stick camera control and you might as well be playing a new game. Worth a shot to play if you ask me.
I would say don't wait to jump in, but if you have a preference or just want to play it in as high a quality as you can, it might be worth the wait. That said, when you do get around to them, I hope you enjoy your time with them.
I was just reflecting on the Zelda franchise the other day, and thinking about how I'd love to introduce the classics to my cousin (the little sister I never had), and explain their themes and share the experience with her. This could not have dropped at a better time.
That's a great way to introduce them. Playing on original hardware is great and all, but you can't beat the convivence of having a ready to go game on a computer. When you do end up playing these games, I hope to both of you have a great time with them.
That can run a phones huh? I had no idea. That's super cool. These types of projects really show off what the fan base can do. Best part is, it'll only get better.
I play the recompiled MM with ReShade for that CRT effect, it improves the experience a lot. 60fps (because my monitor doesn't go past that), ultrawide, 2x resolution and CRT filter, gyro for aiming, camera controls, D-Pad input for Ocarina, this is the best way I have ever experienced Majora's Mask!
I didn't know about that crt filter. I'll have to try and find it. I have no doubt that this is one of the best ways to play this game in current times. Nothing will really beat the first time I booted it up on a crt proper back in the day, but this? It's like seeing it for the first time again. Glad you are enjoying it!
4:04 This statement is a bit hyperbolic. While the recompiled code runs natively on your computer’s CPU, the RT64 renderer the game uses is effectively emulating the game’s graphics on your GPU. It’s actually comparable to how PS1 backwards compatibility works on the PS2; the PS1’s CPU is included inside the PS2, but the PS2 uses emulation for the PS1’s graphics. That’s why the PS2 has the option to enable bilinear filtering for textures when the original PS1 couldn’t, much like how RT64 is able to do variable resolution + framerate interpolation + eventually path tracing whereas the N64 (obviously) couldn’t do that.
Ahh a subject matter expert I see. I don't really know the ins and outs of how the game interacts with the pc. I'm going off of what I understood from the read me file. Even if I had this level of understanding, sometimes it's better to keep it simple. No reason to bog down the video with all this. Only the real hard-core would care and most people don't want or need that deep an explanation. Still it is good that others like yourself are around to give the nitty gritty for those that might want it.
Lol. Maybe he should have just done a comp sci 101 course instead of this video. Very important to get every technical detail accurate in a YT video talking about Majora's Mask Recomp. Wouldn't want to be overly hyperbolic now would we?
@@Millahtime I apologize for coming off as pompous or rude. What I should have demonstrated here is that the strengths of Majora’s Mask Recomp doesn’t necessarily stem from its detachment from emulation, but rather because of its smart hybridization of natively recompiled code and enhanced graphical emulation. When MM Recomp first released, there was a spike in throwing shade towards fanmade N64 emulators; Recomp was so convenient and performant, whereas searching for the right N64 emulator for your needs is widely misunderstood. When I heard LeonKiske mention “*no emulation at all*”, I felt it was another push against N64 emulation for being inferior and confusing. I believed that by sharing how the Recomp uses emulation to enhance its graphical presentation, the growing tension could be slightly eased between the established software emulation and emerging compiled code communities.
@johnclark926 if it makes you feel any better. I didn't think you were coming off wrong or anything. Also, I had no idea that there was discourse in N64 Emulatuation? That seems dumb to me. Clearly, you have more of an understanding on these matters and that's cool. Me? I don't have a horse in this race. Play how you want on what you can. At the end of the day we all just want to chill out and play some cool games. No need to make it more complicated than that. No worries man. No harm, no foul in my book.
Ain't nothing wrong with that. You play how you want. The neat thing is people have options and that's all that really matters. Thanks for hanging and sharing your thoughts.
I started playing this at 150 frames and better graphics/wide screen and never went back. Took 5 minutes to set up and it’s amazing, there is no reason to play on original hardware at all
@@Jbswe I just don’t see why people obsess over frame rates with games like this. It’s looks smoother and the textures are a little better but I don’t see the point. But I bought this game when it was released so I’ll always love its rough edges.
@@skatepark02 I don’t “obsess” I have played so much of the original this took me minutes to set up and it runs so good, it’s fine you like playing on original hardware but why exactly do you not see a point in it, my n64 broke so have no way to play it so was gonna emulate original until I remembered this existed, the load screens being 5x quicker is probably my favourite part you’re literally saving time out of your life not watching a black screen anytime you enter anywhere in the game. That alone makes it worth it
main issue i have with higher framerates is that there are a few instances where your animations are just sped up, for example, rolling. you spend the same amount of frames rolling as you would at 22 fps as you would at 60 fps so you dont go as far. all forms of movement are hindered by this, the game expects the framerate to be 22 and altering that comes with consequences. you just flat out move slower and roll shorter in all forms also, i struggle to think of a single loading screen in the game minus the dawn of the day screens that take longer than .1 seconds.
They can be fun if you give some time to open up a bit. Used to play this quite a bit back in the day. I'm just glad there are newer ways for people to try them out, one way or another.
I'm not sure I'd recommend the recompiled version of MM. MM also has 2ship 2 harkidian which has many extra features the recomp needs extra work to add onto. Like 2ship has a built in randomizer, not just the tools to make one. The same with Ocarina with ship of harkidian, yes the recomp lets you do it too, but the decomp is already available for these games and in theory gives even more power to the user than a recomp.
I see where you are coming from and you are right. The SoH for both OoT and MM both allow you a metric butt-ton of options to get the game how you might want it. The thing that this recomp allows for is a simple plug and play option. Just load it up and go. For people who may not want to really deep dive into the systems this option is one for them. It's like the difference between console and pc games. Pc let's you really get in there and customize it as much as you want. Console is just load and go. Not as many options for them, ya know? You gotta look at this with a broader spectrum of players in mind and what they are willing to do to play this on their PC. I have to imagine the base is already pretty low if only because you can just emulate it, or play it on a switch, or dig out a GameCube, or the original. Just some food for thought friend. Sometimes it's not about what's better. Sometimes it's about what you are willing to put the effort into. Plus, this project is just cool as he'll yea?
@@LeonKiske I’ve played the harkidian and recomp. Load and go is a 👍 and just feels like it runs better overall than the harlidian version. I don’t really care about extras such as randomizers just an overall better throwback experience. This review is from playing on Steamdeck and I cannot wait until OOT releases by them!
@vinnichi I am also looking forward to the OoT release. Sometimes, you just want a good and easy way to enjoy a game without having to navigate a ton of menus. I feel ya on that one.
It isn't so much that the game wasn't written in "modern standards" it is just that when you decomp a game using a tool you get an Assembly output. You would get asm in any program you decomp from 1999 or 2024. What takes the work is turning that asm back into C that would have looked exactly like what the C code nintendo had written.
Ahh, a subject matter expert I see. Thank you for the information. I don't really know what C looked like back around the time of this games development, but i would have to assume that programming language has gotten more sophisticated in the 25ish years since. So while the bones might be similar, I would call it "modern." Moreover, while someone like yourself might know the inner workings, lots of people don't. So dumbing it down, without adding in a bunch of technical jargon makes it easier for people to follow along. That said, I am glad people like yourself exist and can add that extra layer of information. Should people be interested in it.
I've seen work on Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon in this style. That's one I really wanna play. Here's hoping this is just the beginning for a wave of recompilations!
I played that game a bunch with friends way back when. It was a pretty fun game, I'd be super stoked to see it get this kind of treatment. Super fun for sure.
In this version? Probably not. For something like that you might want to look into the Ship of Harken. That program allows for way more customization options.
@@DwAboutItManFr I wasn't aware you meant in code. Though, my original statement still holds true. The re-compiler doesn't really allow for that level of rom manipulation. There is always the chance for it, but it doesn't seem to be on the development timeline.
@DwAboutItManFr I mean, it does do that, or at least something very similar. And while it's easy to just say, "slap that in there." On their end, it'll probably take a hot minute to do. Which is why I said it's possible. It just isn't on the timetable they gave as of now.
This is very exciting! I would love to see recompilation technology come to other systems like the PS2, but I feel like we’re still a long way off from there
This is exactly what I was wondering. From looking at the N64 recomp mr wise guy did say that a NES version was a thing, though I didn't look into that, but if that's also possible then perhaps other systems are not too far behind. Gonna have to wait and see.
That's unfortunately very unlikely. N64 games are so simple the entire game is smaller than the program you run RGB on your computer. PS2 games are much more complex and that's also around the time physics in games started to be utilized adding even more complexity.
@Skylancer727 you aren't wrong. The PS2 and it's games are way larger in scope but as unlikely as it is, it's not impossible. It'll just take some people that really understand the system. Plus, I mean it doesn't hurt to want or hope for something, even if it more than likely won't happen. No need to rain on people's parades m, ya know? Not about something like this anyway.
@LeonKiske well I'm a realist by nature. I personally believe that hope is also a train destined for despair. To have no expectations is to never be disappointed. Just look at the people who say Tears of the Kingdom is a total flop after making thousands of theories and playing BotW for 200+ hours. These people put expectations so high the game could never have met them. Honestly to me I think that Tears is objectively the better game with the only flaw being the story for the regions. But to thoe who let their dreams control their expectations the game was a dumpster fire that spit on the image and perfection of BotW. Similar is true for Kingdom Hearts 3. A game built off 20 years of development and world building. There was no way it could meet expectations and it didn't. Only years down the line have views shifted on it.
@Skylancer727 look I get the idea. Somethings do require a more realistic view on things. Trust when I say I understand what it is you are talking about. However, hoping that maybe just maybe something like getting a recompiler program for another system isn't exactly something, in the grand scheme of things, that is all that serious. Those games you listed, TotK, BotW, KH3 and I'm sure the list can go on near infinitely if you really wanted, all fall under the perview of a person and their personal opinions on things. The scope by which you are looking at things is limited because of your "realist" viewpoint. Certain things require that scope, but not everything. So do yourself a favor and just chill out. It's not that serious. It's a hypothetical based on cool tech that a person/team is making. Just let people live and have fun man.
One thing I loved doing while playing the MM ship of harkinian version was adding shaders that imitated CRT looks via ReShade The game does look good without shaders! I just really really like the vibe of playing with the scanlines haha
I getcha. Playing these games on a crt is how they are meant to be played. Something about it is just right. We're those things and option I would have used them. SoH both for MM and OoT are way advanced for what they can offer. I just appreciate a quick grab and go type thing that this program offers. Lots of good options out here for everyone and that's never a bad thing.
Wish I had an answer for ya. I would also like to have Perfect Dark work similarly to this. With any luck, maybe a team is out there working behind the scenes to get something like this up and running. That's what I would like to think anyway.
So what's the difference between this program and the Ship of Harkinian one? I think the soh version of Majora's Mask is called 2 Ship 2 Harkinian, is either version blatantly better than the other?
It depends on what it is you are looking for. If you want to customize as much stuff as possible and get real deep into the nitty gritty of it. The SoH is the way to go. It gives a bunch of control to you and how you want to play. I imagine it's the same for Majora. This recomp is made to be a more in and out kind of deal. You feed the program the rom and it does the rest. You lose out on granular control and all the settings that SoH has, but you get an almost immediate entry point to pick up and play. Think of it like the difference between a PC game and all it's settings you may need to tinker with vs a console game, which is just made to run on that universal hardware. More over, it's less about these Zelda games specifically and more about how this can be used for other N64 games down the line. I'd love for a way to play something like Jet Force Gemini or WinBack or something in a similar fashion to this Zelda Recomp tool. Hope that helped a bit. Thanks for hanging.
While I can certainly understand the angst when someone puts their love into making the game better, only to see Nintendo put an end to it... ... the Zelda franchise belongs to Nintendo. They created it, and it rightfully belongs to them. Players have gotten so used to free hacks and roms, that they believe the newer versions actually belong to those who've updated it. Nintendo's software is not "freeware". It was never intended to be open-ended, nor open to the public to do whatever they wanted to it. Fact is... these updaters have committed copyright infringement. I'm no spokesperson for Nintendo. I'm merely stating fact. Zelda is the property of Nintendo. It belongs to them. Having said that... imagine that YOU own Nintendo. How would you feel if someone took YOUR product, reimagined it, and redistributed it to the public, for FREE? Put yourself in that position, and tell me how you'd feel about having YOUR product given away. I realize that Nintendo is HUGE, and probably doesn't need the money. But, their money is not for anyone else to count. And I certainly wouldn't blame them if they were to throw out a cease & desist, just because someone feels their hard work somehow negates their ownership. Despite the gozillions they've made from their patrons... they don't owe anyone anything. Yes. I've downloaded OOT, & MM, for free. (I actually own an original console, as well as the game carts, when they were new.) And I was thankful, just like all of the others that love those games. But, the fact still remains... those games belong to their rightful owner. Other than lifestyle... the owner isn't any different than the people who play them. If Zelda belonged to YOU... would you be thrilled about anyone giving your product away?
Oh man, you came in here with some things to say. Well, allow me to reply. I do agree that many people have taken things for granted. No doubt about that. There are so many things, fan projects, fan customizations and well just about everything else fan related, that have come and gone. Some because they just gave up, others because Nintendo brought the Hammer down, as is their right to do. As you said, it's their IP to do what they want with and I am in 100 percent agreement. However, unless I misread or misinterpreted what this program, and others like it do, as far as I am aware, no infringement of any kind has been done. The are not providing you the game, you have to supply that. Loading this program up without feeding it a ROM, either yours or one acquired by whatever means you managed, does nothing. The program will simply not work. This is the main hinge, or maybe loophole? That this project relies on. Where they to just have this load up and go, with nothing needed on your end, then yes, they would be in some hot water. This isn't similar to say AM2R, where the main creator just built their own Metroid game with plans to distribute. Though, as far as I am aware they were never going to charge for it, that was Nintendo blocking a project, rightly, in order to preserve their IP. This isn't quite the same. If only I was the creator of Zelda, man that would be awesome. You're right though, I don't know if I would want people to distribute my things without my direct consent. However, that's not what these people are doing, if only through technicality and because of that I might let it slip on by. it might be a solid PR move, ya know? Now what would be awesome, and trust when I say I doubt this would ever be the case, but It would be cool. If Nintendo decided to actually approach these people and offer them direct work to bring all these old games up to something resembling modern standards I would be all in. Nintendo could sell me these old N64 games for like 15 - 20 bucks a pop and I would buy them again. Everyone is gonna have a different take away and that's fine. My biggest thing however is it keeps the games relevant and more importantly available for future players to engage with. There will come a time when the last N64 breathes its last and the console dies out. hopefully it wont happen for a long while, but hey you never know. More importantly, while Zelda is certainly not at risk of being forgotten by its players, some of the other titles in the N64 line-up certainly will. I mean when was the last time you or anyone you know booted up Hybrid Heaven? (Wouldn't it be funny if that got announced for Switch online?) Yes, Nintendo can and likely will at some point, find a way to take this down, as is there right, but it only hurts us as players. Not everything will have the same chance to shine, and that work deserves to be seen. I mean it was made to be played right? For me it's not about money, its about the games. Whatever Nintendo does is up to them. I might not like it, but it is what it is. Honestly I could probably go on and on about all the things that have come from fan projects, there is quite an extensive list, but unless you really want to hear about it, I'll save you the novella. I also have owned my system since the early days of N64, along with a whole bunch of games. Thanks for your input and I hope you got something out of my reply. See ya around.
It is definitely worth checking out and experimenting with. Once they implement all the things they can, it'll more than likely be my default way to play these titles moving forward. Hopefully you have a fun time with it.
@trismatthews7693 I did, in fact see that this morning. I was planning on making a very short vid about it when I got home. Had me mad excited. Not only can people finally get their hands on it without emulation, but now I have a much easier way to get footage for my series on them. I only wish it came out about a month or so ago... lol
Agreed. Sounds quality is much higher with whatever pc port you use to play on. NSO is fine for the posterity of it, but it's overall much improved with the effort of the community at large.
Is this easy to get running on macOS Apple Silicon? That code is MIPS assembly, by the way. If I remember correctly, this adds 0x20 to the R4 register in the CPU.
I don't think it is compatible with anything Apple currently. For that type of info you'd be better served checking the github link in the video description. Better to get the info straight from the source, ya know? Also, cool to learn it's MIPS. I figured it was some kind of HEX or something, I am by no means a coder in any regard. Thanks for dropping that knowledge, Super cool.
That is a bit out of my wheel house, but i think you'll need some special tools and an interface for it on you PC. I'm certain you can find a video to point ya in the right direction on all of that. Its a great way to hold on to your older library of games for sure. Plus you'll have the benefit of knowing it is your copy. Mine (which i totally got legitimately) could be anyone's copy.
@@LeonKiske I've mostly played it as wii virtual console, and more recently started a save on gamecube collector's edition version, but I would like to eventually play it on n64 if I can get my hand's on a ocnsole at some point. I also figured rom dumping wouldn't be your expertise, just pointing out that I have more reason than ever to figure it out since rom sites are in a very interesting state at the moment.
@jyke321 you would be correct about the rom stuff. I know it's a bit crazy out there for that right now. As a friendly heads up, you didn't hear it from me, but there may or may not be a reddit thread that you can find that has just about everything you might want. On a related note, super cool that you have all those copies. I had them all at one point, but they got lost in the shuffle somewhere, so I've been rebuilding that collection up. Just grabbed the N64 version like a month or so ago. I wish you good luck on finding one of your own.
I have a question: with any PC decompilation version, can you use the original Japanese Text if you’re someone like me who’s learning Japanese and wants to play the game in its original language but also doesn’t want some of the Japanese Changes? Cuz oh man Majora’s Mask English and Japanese are night and day LOL
I bet the Japanese version leaves in some interesting details for sure. As far as what rom the recomp takes, I'm fairly certain it needs the English rom to work. Took some time to look it up real fast and yea, it needs the English rom. You can double check it if you'd like. I have a link to it in the description. Check for Zelda Recomp and it'll take you to the main info page. Maybe down the road, they will over up other language options, but it's locked to English only right now.
I appreciate Z64Recomp, but 2Ship2Harkinian supports more customisation, so it is my poison of choice for Zelda on PC And like Recomp, Harkinian also takes data from a ROM, meaning you have to provide your own and so Nintendo can't get them (they have plausible deniability)
That cool man. Glad you have your preferred way to play. The recomp has its place for people who don't really want as deep a level of control over the game. 2S2H is awesome, no doubt. But I don't really need that personally. I just want to fire it and go, no set up required. Accessibility is the name of the game ya know? And more ways for people to play their favorites is never a bad thing. Thanks for hanging out though, I appreciate it.
Now, I don't know which one would be better. The 3DS version of the game, or this recomp? I know the 3DS version looks stunning as well, but what if I combined the 3DS visuals in the Recomp? This is just out of curiosity.
At some point down the line, you should be able to do just that. They are still in the early phases of this project, but eventually they will add the ability to replace character models and whatnot. So in theory you will be able to swap in the models from thr 3DS version. Hope that helps ya out a bit.
This specific program, no. That said there is a recomp tool that you could use to get those games to work, but it requires some technical know-how and unfortunately that type of talent is outside my skill set. I imagine though, eventually should more people jump in on this more and more games will get a similar treatment. Here's to hoping yea?
Much the same! I wish playing them on modern screens wasn't as much of a pain as it is. The NSO stuff is great, but it losses something in it's process ya know?
Ain't that the truth. Truly 480 at 24 frames is the way! In all seriousness though if more N64 games can get this type of treatment I'd be a happy camper. The N64 had a bunch of great games, it's just that controller can be tough to work out in emulators, ya know? Original hardware is great, but not a ton of people have that these days.
@TylerChristensen69420 ahhh, I hadn't thought about the GameCube controller for those. That would be a good alternative for pc emulation. Thanks for that tip.
Your not wrong, but not fully right either. The reason the N64 and most other consoles up until, realistically the PS3/Xbox 360 when HDMI started to he standard, sounded like they were muffled is because of the AV cables that were used. It was even more muffled if you had the RF adapter. It was less muffled if you were able to get S-Video to work. Point being, the console did create this pure sound digitally, and then it was converted to analog to pass through the AV cables (or whatever you were using) to land on your CRT screen. So again, not wrong, just not right either. Unless you really deep dive on this topic it's not really well known. That said, play however you want man. It's all good. Just sharing some cool stuff I recently found out about.
Possibly. I have no doubt that will be the case. Assuming, of course, we can get AI to produce the correct code and have it be efficient. I haven't done a ton of looking into that specificly but from what I have heard tangentaly it's not really producing anything better than what a person who is just starting out could make. Who knows though, maybe soon, maybe not.
@@LeonKiske Well, to put it simply. What is computer code if not the LANGUAGE we use to communicate with computers. The very one thing LLMs specifiacally are quite good at, is language. Just look at how effective translators they are. When it comes to computer language, code, it's proven itself already be quite capable already, needing mostly human oversight and proofreading. The goal of LLMs is to alter the way we communicate with computers in a way that's more natural to us. So it won't be long now before that problem gets solved. And ofc, the side benefit of that, is that most things that require the creation or coversion of computer code become radically more simplified and accessible to pretty much everyone. I predict that in the near future, lets say by the end of the decade, not just N64 games, but pretty much for all games, being able to run them natively on PC will become extremly easy to accomplish.
It would be great if that end is where something like this recomp leads. I would love to be able to play and keep preserved all these older games. Everyone knows the companies don't care much at all about that, really. By the sound of it you are either really into AI and it's possibilities on this front or you work in or around this type of tech. I haven't heard of LLMs (or if I have I am unfamiliar with the abbreviation language learning machine?) Assuming that is what it is I have no doubt that AI can rip through most languages. It's a set of logic and rules after all and that's the stuff AI eats up, computers too. Maybe you're right and all it will take is some light oversight on our part.
@badideagenerator2315 ahh so I was close. Still good to know. I had heard that AI code is a pain, but I don't really dabble in that so I have no real reference point. I'm just going off what I have heard from some folk who have way more experience in this than I do. Thanks for the clarification, I appreciate it.
If it's windows based? Sure yea. No reason it wouldn't. Just make sure you set up on the windows download and not Linux and you should be good to go. I imagine it's no different from how it works on a regular desktop
@HuckLetsPlay I would hope so. Be weird if something happened. Look really not trying to start nothing with ya. To be fair, I more than likely came off a bit hot not my intent. Just, like 4 frames? Was it really worth typing that in just to get the one up? I'm genuinely curious. We're it me I would have just let it slide. Again, not trying to start nothing, to be clear. I just want to figure out the why is all.
@@LeonKiske I mean comments are good for the TH-cam algorithm right? Didn’t think I was a big deal to be honest. Great video by the way! Lots of hard work goes into these.
I respect the answer. Thanks for that. Look, from my perspective, it seemed like you were getting real nitpicky about the fine details. Unfortunately, it's hard to determine what is genuine and what is the "um, actually" from just the text alone. So, my bad man. I'll take the blame for all this. Just an honest miscommunication. At any rate, thanks for hopping in, for whatever that may be worth now. Thanks for being cool.
I'm personally never buying another Nintendo product ever again. I don't give a single shit how squeaky clean and family friendly they claim to be is a façade to the greedy corporation they truly are. I mean yes I understand that the developer is in the artists and the creators who created this game and many others deserve to be recognized and paid for their efforts and labor. But even Nintendo is probably not even paying their people adequately and most of the money is probably going to the higher-ups. And their legal teams to basically make sure like Adobe and any other corporation that basically likes to be stingy with their proprietary stuff. Just because they want to be the sole distributor of how you access their content. I thought about buying a Nintendo switch but honestly I'd rather just dust off my old Nintendo 64 and play my original games as is until the damn thing is fried before I even think about buying another Nintendo product. And any Nintendo product that I intend to buy I intend to buy second hand. Because I refused to give them any more of my money. If you actually cared about your customer and you actually cared about Nostalgia truly then you would actually try to find ways to make your games accessible Beyond just making it a service that people have to pay for just to be able to access your shit. Not to mention the fact that if a game is old enough that it's no longer in mainstream circulation then why not make it accessible to improve upon quality of life and other things. Or God forbid actually pay people to recreate the game and re-release it as a brand new game refreshed and recoded with graphics and quality of life updates Beyond just look we reported the same tired game onto the new platform now give us money.
Boy, you came in here with some thoughts, ehh? Look, I get it. Nintendo is a company, and for the most part, hell damn near in every circumstance, a company will more often than not put profit over most anything else. I do agree that people should be paid what they are worth and to that measure sometimes you have to buy from them. In a perfect world, that would happen. You are free to do what you feel is right. Buy things second-hand, save yourself some cash. I certainly do for sure, but those people you want to be paid fairly won't if you don't buy straight from them from time to time. It probably won't do much, but it has the benefit of making sure the company at least keeps them around. Games will make them money, and those suits won't want to make those games on their own. Uhh, that aside, I feel like you may have come in on this video, not really. Uhh, getting what this is? This option I talk over in this video is probably what you are looking for in terms of sticking it to Nintendo. This program has no affiliation with them at all. This is more along the lines of an emulator but way better and as an added bonus, it's free? So, it checks most of your boxes. Nintendo doesn't profit from it. You get to play a classic more or less guilt free and the people working on it are doing it out of a love for the game. At any rate thanks for dropping in and sharing your thoughts. Just keep an open mind yea?
@LeonKiske my bad I did come in quite hot. I do realize that yeah this video was more about a program that could run Majora's Mask as if it was more of a native Ram program. And with that it's beautiful. I have thought about getting a switch but the thing is is that I don't think I would want to participate in any of the subscription-based services. I would love to at least experienced breath of the wild at least once in my lifetime. But at the same time I just feel like a lot of companies just get away with putting a Stranglehold on their consumers. Rather than actually worrying about preserving what people find important about their products or their content. Especially when you have media such as this that isn't just a video game but is technically a method of preserving art and storytelling it's just in a different format. A more Interactive format. I would definitely love to have more options available for people to be able to experience Zelda and other video games that are enjoyed and loved by many in a wide variety of formats that enable people to be fairly and adequately compensated. And I feel like in a perfect world that would be achievable and I feel like with the way that we have influence over companies with our wallet I feel like if we actually speak up on what we want and not let them bully us into how they want us to do it. Putting profit over people then I feel like we could get closer to a more enjoyable gaming experience for everyone.
@sunakonakahara222 Hey, no worries. You did come in hot, but credit to you, you came back and even apologized. So my hats off to you. That's no small task. As far as the morality of companies and what we should do vs not do goes. We'll it's complicated to say the least. Voting with your wallet is a viable strategy and it does work, but it's a give and take type deal. If you vote to hard in one direction you may never get another of your favorite games, see F-Zero as an example. (Hell metroid was in this camp too) and there are plenty of people that would love for a new F-Zero to happen, but it's not looking great ya know? And why? Probably because a ton of people chose not to pick up the last F-Zero. That said it is not a perfect fit for this scenario, but it works well enough. There are a good amount of jobs that could be made should something like a new F-Zero could create. It's hard to say, but let's assume this is the case. None of that can happen unless we as players choose to pick up some F-Zero games should they pop up. Now, that's a very hyper specific scenario, but yea it could happen. As far as their vice grip on old games and how you can play them... yea that can pound sand. I don't like having to shill out money just for the privilege to play games that they handout every now and again. I would much rather just have these be open for everyone to play. To that point I say whatever you have to do to play the games you want. I do. On a much more fun note. I do hope you manage to get your hands on Breath of the Wild. It's not for everyone and neither is Tears of the Kingdom, but they can be fun for sure. I mean I like them for whatever that may be worth. You don't need the online service of the switch to just play those games, just make sure you pick up the little cartridge and you should be fine. If not, there are ways to play it on a PC, it'll just take some time to work out. At any rate thanks for being cool and coming back once you chilled out. It speaks well of you as a person.
Anyone know how to get the motion controls working. I use a Nintendo switch controller 2ith 8bitdo and it doesn't seem to work? I'm pretty sure on the github it said that i could use these 2 things.
They did say you could use gyro controls for aiming and what not, but I am unsure of the compatibility. It can work on a steam deck, so I am sure (if not now then soon hopefully) that the 8bitdo controllers will work. With any luck maybe someone in here can point ya in the right direction. Good luck on the search.
An excellent question, that I unfortunately don't have an answer for. My best gues would be that there is a way, however I have none of the technical know how on how you would go about it. That said, if you are asking those types of questions you may already have an idea to try. I would check the github and see if there is any mention there for compatability issues and then run some experiments for the fun of it. Either that or maybe get an answer directly from the people working on it, they certainly would know more than me on this subject.
i don't mean to throw shade because I don't think the zelda 64 recomp guy ever intended any kind of competition, but it was sus as fuck how the Ship of Harkinian people, not even long before Recomp released, made it seem like it'd be a while until their first proper release of their MM pc port, and then Recomp comes out, and the all of a sudden not long afterward, they rush their first release out like 'hey look we have it too!' and it looked and sounded awful and even now there are still hella inaccuracies like the echo/reverb effect not sounding proper, there are still some visual inaccuracies that Recomp nailed on the first release, etc. Also it had less features than OoT ship did on thats first release.
I'm not sure there was meant to be competition between the two. While the end goal is more or less the same the go about it in completely different ways. Recomp is quick and easy. Plug and play ansld DoH is more complicated to set up, but gives tons of options to the player. If they felt the need to compete that's on them, but it might have been misguided. Either way at the end if the day what matters is that the players have the options they want. I'm sure the MM SoH will get running smoothly, if it hasn't already and that'll be great.
Well on a core level the game still looks the same. I didn't have any extra bells or whistles added. The big difference is how smoothly it runs. Going from the original frame rate up to 60 frames a second and staying at that frame rate is one of the big draws. At some point later down thr line you can add in new texture packs and swap out the character models with ones that have more visual fidelity. So, yea I can see how it would appear to be no different, but if you play it on your own screen you would immediately be able to tell the difference. TH-cam and it's compression doesn't exactly do this recomp justice.
Honestly seeing mm at 60 fps is not great to deal with. I imagine 48 would look considerably nicer (its at least properly divisible by 24 so it probably wouldnt feel as awkward). Thing is mm targeting 24 makes even 30 feel weird but since 30 isnt so far off its acceptable to view, 60 is fuckin horrible. Sm64 works at 60 because the original game targeted 30 to begin with so with just doubling the framerate it looks totally fine. Mm just doesnt look good at 60 tho. Also i cant wait for dk64 to get this treatment
Well thankfully the option exists to change the frame rate to whatever you want, so at least there's that. The 60 doesn't bother me personally and from what I understand the game is being rendered internally by your system to handle whatever frame rate you like. So it shouldn't matter what the original frame rate was on the N64. I get it though. If it's not for you then it's not for you and that's cool.
@Jbswe look I understand thinking 60 makes everything look good but things like animations and frame pacing were designed for a specific framerate so when it's off by more than double it can look awkward. Yes it's technically more smooth but if you have played as much n64 as I have you can fuckin feel that shit and it's not a good feeling. It may not be a problem for you but things aren't really designed for that framerate at all and if you compare things between it's designed and 30 it feels off but not nearly as egregious as 60 does. Edit: apparently it's using matrix interpolation to increase the visual framerate, that makes a lot more sense now . The engine and framerate are being heavily desynced at 60 which is why it was so fuckin horrible. It may not bother you but not everyone is going to be able to tell something is wrong
@@brenscott5416 lmao don’t try me I have beat so many n64 games I have played hundreds of hours at 20 frames and It just feels better to me instantly, rolling round moving camera the menus plus the loading screens are probably 5x faster which is amazing going through clocktown has never felt better doing the shooting gallery felt way smoother idk what youre on it barely looks off to me so far in my 5 hours there hasn’t been a single animation looking off you legit get used to it in 20 minutes but you can do you 🧐
No worries, man. I played a bunch of N64 as a kid and trust that I understand where you are coming from. Whatever frame rate works for you and how you play can only be defined by you. I play an uncharted of fighting games, and you can definitely feel that framerate issue on some of them, and its bad, real bad. That said, more options to play never hurt, and some people will go great lengths, and perhaps too far, to play how they want. There is no "correct" way to play, at least not anymore, I suppose. The OG N64 will always be how I think of all these games, but times have changed and so to must we change. The hardware won't be around for ever and this is, not ideal but it keeps the game alive for that much longer.
You're not wrong. Currently, that does look better overall. I imagine eventually this will get to that level of fidelity, and then some. They just need to continue the project and hit those goals. Give it some time to breathe and see where it goes for now. At the very least it's a wonder of programming knowledge and preservation.
While true, still plays much worse than the original I'd rather have a fun game with bad graphics (even though I personally believe it still has GREAT visuals despite its age) than a game with great graphics and awful gameplay No shade to people who enjoy MM3D, but honestly it is by far and between the worst way to experience the game in my opinion
@averysketchygamer3241 I agree. It's fun, and it does look good, but it lacks a bit because of the way they did the port. Still, everyone has their preferences and to that, play how you like. We all enjoy the game at the end of the day.
@@averysketchygamer3241 Have you seen the mod Project Restoration for MM3D? It keeps all the quality of life stuff but reverts a bunch of other changes the 3DS version made, such as the boss fights and Zora swimming!

This would be rad. Adding things in and seeing where the community can take the game is always interesting.
Yea. The option to bring it back down to what you remember is a nice touch. It's wild to see this game run that smoothly. Almost uncanny really.
It's not even 24, but only 20 in the original) But since they have perfect frame pacing, it doesn't even feel like 20 fps.
@johnsmith-ck4qt that's good to know. Thanks for the clarification.
@@LeonKiskeAre there plans for a plugin to unbind the game speed from the framerate?
@tinkywinky711 as far as I am aware that has already been done. The games speed shouldn't be affected by the frame rate at all.
Probably heard it already, but I use Ship of Harkinian for both OOT and MM
I did hear about that. It was, more or less, the back bone for how this recomp tool works. From what I saw SoH let's you get real deep in the woods with how you want to customize the game and it is impressive.
This tool is, as far as I know anyway, meant to be a plug and play type deal. Just load up and go. Kinda like the difference between a console game and a PC game. One you have to install and get working for your custom rig, the other you just slap a cart/disc into (back around the 360 and ps3 days and older) and go. Ya know?
How do you get Ship to use MM?
@@rainbowdarth they released a Ship 2 without announcing it. Like a month or 2 ago.
@LinkDragon512 nice. I gotta check that out at some point. I'm sure the gyro aim for MM will get there eventually.

All I can say is I try, ya know? Thanks for stopping in.
First video of yours I've seen, can't wait to see more
Well, hello, and welcome to the channel. I appreciate you taking some time and hanging out here.
I just finished Majora's Mask 2ship2harkinian with 4K graphics, modern controls and it was amazing
Nice. It's good to have options that work for ya.
As an old wrestling fan im especially excited for the potential this method has for one day modding wrestling games with the No Mercy engine.
I played so much of those old N64 wrestling games. No Mercy was a staple when hanging out with some friends on a weekend night. If this thing gains widespread attention and people band together I would like to think they can get just about every game in the library running eventually. Here's hoping.
MM is my favorite Zelda game, thanks for the info good sir
You are more than welcome. Hopefully this will give you another way to play.
When you are at the bank. Just hit R and it will throw all your money into it. You don't have to change the numbers manually.
Genuinely a solid tip. I don't think I ever knew that. Must have missed that dialog box or something.
My God, I've played this game so many times since release and this feels fresh and new. Who would've thought the framerate would make it look like a whole new game.
Yea, I was kinda blown away busy that as well. Toss in left stick camera control and you might as well be playing a new game. Worth a shot to play if you ask me.
I've been playing it and it has been amazing. Can't wait for updated textures.
The updates they are planning for it are super cool. Those updated textures are gonna look clean for sure. Glad you've been having fun with it.
I will let you a little secret, i never played a 3D zelda, now i am eager to wait a little more
I would say don't wait to jump in, but if you have a preference or just want to play it in as high a quality as you can, it might be worth the wait.
That said, when you do get around to them, I hope you enjoy your time with them.
@@LeonKiske The latter yeah, o am addicted to patience, like waiting and getting rewarded activates my neurons.
@DwAboutItManFr fair enough. Whatever floats your goats.
Nice to see this. Two months ago I got 2 Ship 2 Harkinian on my phone. I love it.
Ship of Harkinian is a full PC (non-emulated), PERFECT PC platform version of Ocarina of Time.
So I've heard.
Majora's mask is legendary ❤
That it is mysterious mask salesman. Yes, it is.
Hey man!!!!! so glad to see you following your dreams! keep it up brother you got it!
Hey man, good to hear from ya. Hope things are going well for you as too. Still working that clothing grind you were doing?
This feels like it’s for the gamer equivalent to an audiophile.
I’d rather boot up my N64 and play it in its original form.
That alone makes it worth it
main issue i have with higher framerates is that there are a few instances where your animations are just sped up, for example, rolling. you spend the same amount of frames rolling as you would at 22 fps as you would at 60 fps so you dont go as far. all forms of movement are hindered by this, the game expects the framerate to be 22 and altering that comes with consequences. you just flat out move slower and roll shorter in all forms
also, i struggle to think of a single loading screen in the game minus the dawn of the day screens that take longer than .1 seconds.
Thank you for sharing about recomp
My reach might not be the largest, but I saw a cool thing and wanted to help get the word out. Thanks for hanging.
Have you tried the OOT one other people have made? Ship of whatever
I have. Played that fairly recently actually. It's got tons of options under the hood. I do recommend it, if you are willing to tinker with it a bit.
Its funny i always liked this series from a story standpoint but could never really get into the actual gameplay😅 great review!
Did MM 2 ship Harkidian get randomizers yet? Last time I checked it didn’t have it yet?
I haven't really looked into it, but plenty of other people have mentioned it. So maybe?
It isn't so much that the game wasn't written in "modern standards" it is just that when you decomp a game using a tool you get an Assembly output. You would get asm in any program you decomp from 1999 or 2024. What takes the work is turning that asm back into C that would have looked exactly like what the C code nintendo had written.
Ahh, a subject matter expert I see. Thank you for the information. I don't really know what C looked like back around the time of this games development, but i would have to assume that programming language has gotten more sophisticated in the 25ish years since. So while the bones might be similar, I would call it "modern."
Moreover, while someone like yourself might know the inner workings, lots of people don't.
I wonded if these ports will get kazer emanuar style optimizations.
In this version? Probably not. For something like that you might want to look into the Ship of Harken. That program allows for way more customization options.
@@LeonKiske I meant in code.
@@DwAboutItManFr I wasn't aware you meant in code. Though, my original statement still holds true. The re-compiler doesn't really allow for that level of rom manipulation.
There is always the chance for it, but it doesn't seem to be on the development timeline.
@@LeonKiske Doesn't it convert to C code? Just insert them changes in there or something.
One thing I loved doing while playing the MM ship of harkinian version was adding shaders that imitated CRT looks via ReShade
The game does look good without shaders!
When is perfect dark going to ge this treatment? I'm aware its been decompiled but theres no UI or mods or anything as far as I know?
Wish I had an answer for ya. I would also like to have Perfect Dark work similarly to this. With any luck, maybe a team is out there working behind the scenes to get something like this up and running. That's what I would like to think anyway.
I wonder if this will work with the HD texture pack version. I’m gonna try it out later tonight. ( GameCube version )
With any luck, hopefully.
Watch Nintendo shut this down, steal it, and release it as their own remake. Better hide some signatures deep in there.
Honestly, I wouldn't put it past them. I hope they don't. I think most people would hope for the same. Only time will tell.
(Wouldn't it be funny if that got announced for Switch online?)
Yes, Nintendo can and likely will at some point, find a way to take this down, as is there right, but it only hurts us as players.
Interesting! I love this game and I’ll definitely try this out
It is definitely worth checking out and experimenting with. Once they implement all the things they can, it'll more than likely be my default way to play these titles moving forward.
Hopefully you have a fun time with it.
@@LeonKiske definitely going to be keeping my eye out for Ocarina. I love playing that and Majora back to back
@trismatthews7693 that's a solid double play for sure. I'm very much looking forward to the OoT update. Should be a killer time.
@@LeonKiske yoooo did you see that the DS Castlevania games dropped on switch today?? It was on today’s direct.
@trismatthews7693 I did, in fact see that this morning. I was planning on making a very short vid about it when I got home. Had me mad excited. Not only can people finally get their hands on it without emulation, but now I have a much easier way to get footage for my series on them.
I only wish it came out about a month or so ago... lol
Out of the gate nso version of zeld a ost sounds muddy. The pc port sounds clear with better cd quality.
I really gotta figure out how to rom dump now that I own 3 different versions of this game 😭
Holy cow, I didn’t realize I’ve been listening to a choppy version of the music each time I’ve played it.
Mine (which i totally got legitimately) could be anyone's copy.
emulation can be iffy in spots for sure. Some games just work better than others and I couldn't tell ya why.
I appreciate Z64Recomp, but 2Ship2Harkinian supports more customisation, so it is my poison of choice for Zelda on PC
And like Recomp, Harkinian also takes data from a ROM, meaning you have to provide your own and so Nintendo can't get them (they have plausible deniability)
I have a question?
Does it work for Dinosaur Planet 64 and Rare games from N64?
This specific program, no. That said there is a recomp tool that you could use to get those games to work, but it requires some technical know-how and unfortunately that type of talent is outside my skill set. I imagine though, eventually should more people jump in on this more and more games will get a similar treatment.
Here's to hoping yea?
I'm just waiting for SoH's multi-player anchor for rando.
That sounds neat.
How do I feel about N64 games? I feel they are totally radical. Thanks for asking. How do you feel about them?
Much the same! I wish playing them on modern screens wasn't as much of a pain as it is. The NSO stuff is great, but it losses something in it's process ya know?
@@LeonKiske there's nothing like playing Majora's mask at 20 frames per second at 480i
Ain't that the truth.
@@LeonKiske yeah the controls are really part of the issue. The GameCube controller has some great backwards compatibility with those games though
@TylerChristensen69420 ahhh, I hadn't thought about the GameCube controller for those. That would be a good alternative for pc emulation. Thanks for that tip.
The n64 should have a muffled sound to it
Your not wrong, but not fully right either.
This looks cool but I don't have a PC. Guess I'll just have to pull out the old box tv and fire up the 64
Nothing wrong with at all. If you do go and play MM, I hope you have a fun time with it.
@LeonKiske I know I will for sure, it's my favorite Zelda game out of them all
@zacharygreene1979 hell yea!
@zacharygreene1979 hell yea!
I feel like AI is going to make re/decompilation a much easier process in the future. Taking a year's worth of work, and turning it into minutes.
@@LeonKiske llm is just short for language learning model, so that's chatbots
And from what i understand, AI generated code is awful to debug.
Likes how he added it could run on a steam deck lol it will also run on any windows handheld like Asus ROG Ally lol
If it's windows based? Sure yea. No reason it wouldn't. Just make sure you set up on the windows download and not Linux and you should be good to go. I imagine it's no different from how it works on a regular desktop
MM and OoT Ran at 20fps on the N64 . . . Just to be clear
Ok. But does that really matter much? Technically correct, the best kind of correct, but at what cost?
I jest, thanks for the information.
@@LeonKiske If you’re worried about the effort it took to type that in the comments, I seem to be doing well. My finger still bend and all.
Sorry to say emulators will never stop popping up
That's fine. It's not a bad thing for emulators to keep on keeping on. In fact, we should push to keep as many of them as possible.
@@LeonKiske I agree
@@LeonKiske I couldn't agree more. We must keep games alive, these games are a treasure that must be passed on to the next gen
I put the game at 120 frames.
That's a lot of frames!
Since it's Linux based is there a way to run it on Android? Or would you need to side load a Linux launcher to try to run it you think?
An excellent question, that I unfortunately don't have an answer for. My best gues would be that there is a way, however I have none of the technical know how on how you would go about it.
That said, if you are asking those types of questions you may already have an idea to try. I would check the github and see if there is any mention there for compatability issues and then run some experiments for the fun of it. Either that or maybe get an answer directly from the people working on it, they certainly would know more than me on this subject.
Can you play this on Odin 2
I'm gonna say probably not. That thing looks like it runs on an Android OS.
i don't mean to throw shade because I don't think the zelda 64 recomp guy ever intended any kind of competition, but it was sus as fuck how the Ship of Harkinian people, not even long before Recomp released, made it seem like it'd be a while until their first proper release of their MM pc port, and then Recomp comes out, and the all of a sudden not long afterward, they rush their first release out like 'hey look we have it too!' and it looked and sounded awful and even now there are still hella inaccuracies like the echo/reverb effect not sounding proper, there are still some visual inaccuracies that Recomp nailed on the first release, etc.
Maybe because I learned to read from these games, it looks no different to me.😂
Well on a core level the game still looks the same.
How does it not look good? I go back and forth between 20 frames and 150 frames and it looks so much more awful at 20 frames lmao
Late to the party big man
And?
To be honest... Majoras Mask 3D with 4x Rendering Resolutin still looks much better
You're not wrong. Currently, that does look better overall. I imagine eventually this will get to that level of fidelity, and then some. They just need to continue the project and hit those goals.
Give it some time to breathe and see where it goes for now. At the very least it's a wonder of programming knowledge and preservation.
While true, still plays much worse than the original
I'd rather have a fun game with bad graphics (even though I personally believe it still has GREAT visuals despite its age) than a game with great graphics and awful gameplay
No shade to people who enjoy MM3D, but honestly it is by far and between the worst way to experience the game in my opinion
If it wasn't for the touchscreen swapping it would be the best way to play on PC, at least until 2Ship2Harkinian implements all of that quality of life from the 3DS version
Bro is so late to the party and he thinks he is imparting cutting edge knowledge
Damn, who pissed in your cheerios this morning? Bro came in here thinking they had some important stuff to lay out.
Look, I get I'm late to this party, but hey if you just found out some cool shit, wouldn't yo want others to know about it even if is been a few months?
Maybe take a chill pill, pull back off that edge you think you got and try again. I'll wait.
Hell yea. Whip and naenae.
Lol i have seen it old news.
Ok. Good for you then. Question, why bother with the comment? Like honestly what was the point?
So... Have you heard of combs?
Just saying...
You talking hair combs? beard combs? Both? Neither? I'm gonna just assume this was in jest. A joke, a goof, or any other synonym you might want to use.
Don't be that guy, alright?
The tuft is cute dammit
@@LeonKiske hair comb, your had some bits of hair jetting out seemingly randomly...
@l0wl1f3 yea! What they said. lol thanks.
@@LeonKiske I guess one can find it cute, if you don't obsess over your own hair being a curly mess like mine.
ship of harkadian 2 is better!!
Ok
This guy sounds like hes in a tunnel, nice vid but get a better mic brother
It's a work in progress for sure. Trust that I am trying to work that out as best as possible. I listen to myself more than I want to because of all the editing. My mic is a decent one. It's not top of the line, but it wasn't exactly cheap either. Thanks for the feedback.
