August 28, 2024 - Century III Mall Demolition
Another cleanup day. More of the tile facade from Ward’s is being removed and saved. Kinda strange that the mall looks cleaner without the deck.

Well, maybe the deck will be gone by the end of September. On the plus side, it looks like they are saving the Montgomery Ward facade tiles.

The east bridge is down, which leaves only the two on the south side connecting Wards and Entry B (over Entry E) to the deck. Also, Penney's gained a window, and a wall cap came up missing on the mall.

Trying a slightly different vantage point. A lot of the debris has been cleaned up and demo work has resumed on the deck. The crew is approaching the East bridge to Wards and abandoned upper entrance to the deck. Over half the deck is now gone.

All the bridges on the north side of the mall are down. Only three remain; one on the east side of Ward’s, and two on the south side (Ward’s and Entry B, above Entry E, to the mall). There’s not going to be a great vantage point to capture the remaining sections as they come down. I’ll get what I can, but updates may slow until demo on the mall starts.

Numerous sections of the deck, as well as the bridge connecting Sears, have been dropped. Clean-up day. Spent a lot of time at the mall this weekend but only got to see more clean-up of parking deck rubble. Looks like the bridges from the deck to the mall will stay for now.

Demolition is fast approaching the bridges connecting to Sears and Wards. The lantern light poles on the bridges have been removed ahead of demolition, so there’s a chance they were saved. Tried to get some new angles. The next segment of the deck is coming down, and one of the electrical closets scattered around the mall got toppled in the process.

The parking deck continues its evolution into dust. We also get a glimpse of the pin system used to hold the walls of the deck in place. One bridge to go and Sears will be detached from the main section of the parking deck. A small, isolated section is still attached around the front above the loading dock, along with some of the skylights and downlights still hanging on the side of the building above the lower entrance. Work appears to be continuing inside the mall, as well, though updates are sparse.

Word is that the inside of the mall has been getting demoed and cleared out now. Exterior walls should be soon. The two tier parking deck seemed to take way too long to come down, but it’s almost done. Maybe they can fill some of the endless craters in the road around the mall with the demolition materials.😢
Seriously...I haven't been to a Mall in 30 years. I absolutely loved them as a teenager. Many great memories.
And to think this mall, among many others, contributed to the San Francisco 49ers winning everything in the 80’s!

Unless he goes past the marked off restricted areas on the other side where Dicks sporting goods is located, there’s no other spot like this from the top of the slag hill behind Pool City to get a great view.
It looks so neat & tidy. Amazing! That last pan of the whole mall nicely shows how massive the structure is. Wow.

Jeez. This mall was 60% parking garage it seems!
It’s a big place. It took almost as long to walk a loop over/under the deck as it did the mall itself, and the mall is 3 floors on one end.

Hold up, did they really place a bulldozer on a shipping container 😂😂 .. the parking deck is almost wrapped up. That sad moment when that crane arm smashes the first piece of century 3 mall wall is coming. What a beautiful mall. If people never destroyed the interior then just maybe, the mall could've stood as a memory of what giant malls looked like. They always say that they're demolishing for something to serve the community but like carousel mall san Bernardino or Fiesta mall AZ, after demolishing so many months ago, the land sits with sand piles

It’s not like they can keep stores from filing bankruptcy. Malls are just obsolete now and nobody has the time or much disposable income anymore to shop at malls.

How would you react if someone somehow got inside the mall through that large hole in the wall on JCPenney?
Well, for one, that hole is on the second floor, but as much as I want to see pictures of inside, that’s trespassing and is illegal. I advise against it.

There you can see what's going on inside the mall as they're prepping it for demolition.
But like imagine if someone climbed up with the ladder and went inside the mall through that hole on the 2nd floor of JCPenney.
The name of the demolition crew sounds so dirty. Neiswonger. Sounds like double entendre.
I remember going there as a kid when it first opened with my mom and grandma. It was the place to be. Vibrant and full of life on a Friday night. Now it’s all a memory.
I was there a lot through the 2000’s up until around 2011 or so when we quit shopping there. I don’t know why we stopped since JC Penney and Sears were the main stores we went to, but it wasn’t until 2017 that I returned. There’s another video on TH-cam that shows the mall at night around 2009. If you search “Blaze West Mifflin Fountain”, it should come up. That aesthetic is how I remember Century III back then.

Are they demo’ing the entire building or just the parking structures?
Currently, they are only working on the parking deck and gutting the interior of the mall. Eventually, the whole building will be gone.

At first I didn't know what you meant by JCPenney gained a window, but now that I look at it, I can clearly see that they destroyed part of the wall in JCPenney! It also looks like they've destroyed the lamp posts in the parking lot!

I lived just a few miles away, and I watched the progression of Century III Mall being built back around 1979/1980. It's s amazing that it's being demolished. I spent a lot of time shopping there. Monroeville Mall was another place where I spent a lot of time shopping, but strangely, that mall is somehow surviving. I suppose that location is key in these two examples.
@@SigmaSheepdog Monroeville has much better management despite being in an area demographically similar to Century III. They recently held an event for the Dawn of the Dead movie and let them run tours of all the backrooms and hallways where the movie was filmed. Moonbeam wouldn't allow photographs anywhere in Century III, let alone the backrooms.
@@MrTsolar also monreville has that nice district outdoor area, century iii mall had ZERO inviting exterior features or entrances except for the ruby tuesday
I remember that in the first few years after it was built, you could barely find a parking spot.
@@radar_the_foxtrue! the Kaufmann’s / Macys glass sunroom atrium was the only “fancy” part of the exterior of the mall. It looked great when lit at night. But…. Also, the district at Monroeville is a newer feature added onto Monroeville about 15 years ago. The Macys / JCP and even the rear two story entrance at Monroeville is waaaay nicer than anything at c3.

@@MrTsolarI wonder if moonbeam has a payment they are behind on or there’s some part of the deck that West Mifflin needs to inspect before it can come down? Other than that, the overpass can be sliced away no problem. They’re doing that right now at Richland mall separating the standing deck from the mall structure.

Went there first time in 1980. I don’t think it had been open too long and there was some unfinished work, the first time I saw the use of drywall screws. . All things are passing.
That was probably before Phase II was completed (the ramps section). I’ve always wondered where exactly the wall was when only Phase I was open. I’ve yet to come across any pictures showing it.
Another victim of AMAZON …….Jeff is making a ton of money off the corpses of workers and buildings ….that were once malls……
This mall was in major decline well before Amazon. Please watch some dead mall videos from channels like “Sal Dead Mall ExLog” and “Aces Adventures”. Yes, Amazon has impacted our shopping habits extremely, but Pittsburgh and many other cities were overmalled by developers in the 70s and 80s. Pittsburgh had waaaaay too many malls dotted all over the area on top of each other. Also, big box came before Amazon and started the downfall of the malls. This is the same pattern as when malls opened and started the downfall of downtown Main Street stores in many cities. Sad, but it’s our reality at the moment. 😢😢😢
Sad to see it go, this was IMO the most beautiful mall on the inside with its unique three story design.

Why were all the escalators in the mall stopped?
To save on electricity and repair costs. There were a couple that were broke, so I think they decided to simply shut them all off, especially as the second floor became further and further restricted.
Those JCPenney letters you see against the building look like the signs that were on the outside.
